I've seen better days,
but I've also seen worse.
I don't have everything that I want,
but I do have all I need.
I woke up with some aches and pains,
but I woke up.
My Life may not be perfect
but I am blessed.
Karen Yingst, Dietary
Here’s a recipe for a nice light salad that is perfect for Spring or Saint Patrick’s Day. We usually serve
it here for Easter Dinner because it complements the ham so well.
Lime Pineapple Jello Salad
1 - 3 oz. package lime gelatin (or sugar free)
2/3 cup boiling water
2/3 cup marshmallows
2/3 cup cold water and pineapple juice
2/3 cup crushed pineapple, drained, juice reserved
3 oz. cream cheese, softened
2 cups whipped topping, thawed
Dissolve gelatin in boiling water. Add marshmallows and stir to melt. Add cold water with
pineapple juice and crushed pineapples. Let set until slightly thickened. Beat in softened cream
cheese and gently fold in whipped topping. Pour into an 8 X 8 inch dish and chill until firm.
Cut into squares to serve. It can be garnished with a little whipped topping, grape halves or
mandarin oranges. Makes 9 servings

THE LOVE OF FRIENDS
As I shared last month, I hope to do a series on the subject of love for this year. It will be a mix of ideas. We seem
to not understand love because our world is giving us crazy ideas about love. So, if you have something to share,
please contact me about what love is for you. Thank you for your patience as I unwind ideas on love over the next
months of 2014.
In John 15:9-17 Jesus says: “As the Father loved Me, I also have loved you; abide in My love. If you keep My
commandments, you will abide in My love, just as I have kept My Father’s commandments and abide in His love.
These things I have spoken to you, that My joy may remain in you, and that your joy may be full. This is My
commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you. Greater love has no one than this, than to lay down
one’s life for his friends. You are My friends if you do whatever I command you. No longer do I call you servants,
for a servant does not know what his master is doing; but I have called you friends, for all things that I heard from
My Father I have made known to you. You did not choose Me, but I chose you and appointed you that you should
go and bear fruit, and that your fruit should remain, that whatever you ask the Father in My name He may give
you. These things I command you, that you love one another.”
In these verses Jesus connects love with being a friend. There are at least seven unique things in these verses in
which Jesus connects to the idea of love and friends. They are: complete joy, obedience, sacrifice, service, choice,
resources, and a fruitful life. This is a great list of things for us to think about in our relationships with other
persons. This won’t be the last list expanding our minds on the subject of love. I want to expand our thinking about
friendship and love in this article.
Let’s look at five categories of friendship. First, we have people who we call acquaintances. They are people we
know because of meeting them at some event or that someone has introduced us to them. We have an on and off
contact but nothing bonds us in any particular way. Second we have casual friends. With these persons we may
have common interests, activities, concerns and times of sharing life together. Third are our close friends with
whom we share many common likes, activities of life, some of our personal things, nice to be with, can share many
times together at work, play, community and family. Fourth is our intimate friend with whom we are committed,
trust deeply, share our joys, hurts and life. We only have a small group of this kind of friend. Last, of which in
today’s world I think there are too many, is what I call a consumer friend. This one fits in any of the other areas of
friendship. This relationship with people is for what we can get from it. It is a selfish and ego centered relationship.
These categories are not set in concrete and may overlap and change over time. We set our own boundaries for our
relationships. The deeper the friendship is the stronger the trust and love will be for that person. There will be a
greater bond of love with them because our commitment to them is greater. If I may, let’s add to these levels of
friendship different characteristics of love. Sometimes we love because it touches our senses. We are having a
sensual experience. So we say, “I love chocolate cake.” A parent will respond to their child in times of need, even
though they don’t feel like it, because they are obligated to do it as a parent. We may respond to people in love
because we are brothers and sisters in community with them. Lastly we may make a responsible choice of goodness
toward others because we want do it from our heart. We do it not because of the person or our feelings toward them
but because we choose to do it.
Jesus is sharing with his disciples the power of love to bind them together as friends. He wants them to see that the
love of the Father to him is now also for them. So from now on it is not about you but it is about the love of God
that makes the friendship viable and eternal. Jesus is making a new kind of relationship for the disciples to
experience. It will not be just a cultural and at will relationship. It will be Devine and eternal like Jesus and his
Father have for each other. I don’t think the disciples understood what Jesus was saying and doing.
The question may also be for us. Do we understand what our relationships and friendships can truly be?
Jennifer’s Germ of the Month
Jennifer Grube, RNAC, Infection Control
Cleaning and Disinfecting
One of the primary means of preventing the spread of infection in your home is to routinely clean and
disinfect surfaces. You may not realize that there is a difference between cleaning and disinfecting.
Cleaning is a means of removing debris with soap or detergent and water. The friction of cleaning
does remove many surface germs, which is adequate for most household surfaces. But, some germs
can live for hours or even days on surfaces that have been cleaned. To remove these more resistant
germs, disinfection is necessary. Disinfection means using solutions with ingredients that destroy or
inactivate bacteria and other germs.
As mentioned, for most surfaces, cleaning is sufficient protection for the home. Disinfection should
take place where there are high concentrations of more dangerous germs. These places are considered
the “hot zones” or contaminated areas of your home. The major “hot zone” in the house is your
kitchen. There are often infectious bacteria found in raw food such as chicken and other meats. The
risk of spreading these germs is high because this is where food is being prepared. It is also easy to
touch a contaminated item and then spread that contamination to another surface.
Disinfection should also take place on surfaces that are frequently touched by more than one person.
Such surfaces would include toilet flushers, cabinet door handles, and door knobs. Also, many home
electronic devices like remote controls, phones, computer keyboards, and game controls are shared and
should be routinely disinfected. When cleaning electronics, be sure to look for products that are
labeled as safe for that type of equipment. In general, disinfection should take place on a daily basis in
high traffic and high touch areas. But, when someone in your home is sick, it is important to clean and
disinfect surfaces that have been touched by that person more frequently. This is a good way to
prevent the illness from spreading to others in the home.
To clean and disinfect a surface, begin by cleaning with soap and water. After cleaning, apply a
disinfectant and let stand for a few minutes, depending on the manufacturer’s instructions. Wipe the
surface with a paper towel that can be thrown away or a towel that can be washed afterwards. If you
are cleaning up body fluids such as blood, vomit or feces, wear rubber gloves. A simple rule to
remember - If it is wet and it’s not yours, wear gloves. Whenever you use gloves, also remember to
wash your hands after removing them.
Bleach is an effective and inexpensive disinfectant for the home. To make a bleach solution, combine
one tablespoon of bleach for every four cups of water. Apply the solution to surface with cloth, let
stand for three to five minutes, then rinse with clean water. There are also commercial products
available that are designed to clean and disinfect in one step. Before using these products, be sure to
read the instructions. There may be one method for cleaning and a different method for disinfecting.
Cleaning and disinfecting wipes are convenient and effective, but only if used according to the
manufacturer’s directions. More than one wipe may be needed in order to keep the surface wet long
enough for the solution to effectively destroy germs.

RESIDENT PHONE SERVICE
Countryside is creating its own internal telephone system. Beginning April 1,
residents living in the main building will no longer need to contact the local phone
company to arrange for private telephone service or have it discontinued. Countryside
is installing equipment that will enable residents, for a modest monthly fee, to
immediately have a private direct-call telephone line, including long-distance calling
at no additional cost. And if residents move to a different room, their personal phone
service will go with them and their number will not change. These will be private
lines with direct access to the resident’s telephone; calls will not go through the
Receptionist. For more information contact Christina Burdick, Director of Social
Services & Admission at 717-867-4636.
AVAILABLE: FIVE CHURCH PEWS
Countryside is planning to replace five of our chapel pews with chairs.
This will enable residents who use wheelchairs to be near the front of
the chapel where they will be better able to see and hear those who
participate in services and programs. It will also provide additional
space at group activities, especially when tables are used. Five pews are
available. Each pew is twelve feet long and has a cranberry upholstered
seat. The pews and fabric are in excellent condition. The pews are free
to a church or religious organization, for others a donation will be
appreciated. If interested, please contact Executive Director Frank
Schock at 717-867-4636.
WE’RE LOOKING FOR ARTISTS
As part of the improvements we’re making to the interior of our main building, we’ll
be creating “The Gallery.” It’s a portion of corridor where local artists and
photographers will be invited to display some of their original creations. A brief
biography about the artist along with his/her art will be displayed for a month or two.
These rotating exhibits will add interest and inspiration for residents, staff and visitors
who walk along the hall. If you, or someone you know, would be interested in sharing
some of their pictures or photography, please contact our Receptionist Gale Keller at
867-4636 for more information.
TWO BEDROOM COTTAGE AVAILABLE
Countryside has a charming two-bedroom cottage available which
is located on the east side of our campus. The unique feature of
this cottage is the L-shaped floor plan that surrounds a private
patio. There are two conveniently priced contract options for the
Entrance Fee, including one that has a guaranteed 20% refund.
The interior will be refurbished for the new occupant/s with the
opportunity to choose décor and appliance options. To schedule a
tour, call 867-4636.
