It does however offer guidelines on how to choose the most appropriate programs and easily create products to communicate with our targeted audience. 2 Overview of Operation: Military Kids (OMK) 1 When National Guard, Army Reserve and other military parents living in civilian communities are mobilized, their children suddenly become different. Now they are "military kids" but they still "look the same" to teachers, friends and the rest of the community. Their lives are turned upside down! Many of their usual support systems may no longer be adequate. Extensive media coverage of on-going military operations creates daily anxiety. These "new" military kids need to connect with other youth in similar situations. They seek friends and adults who can empathize and can help them cope with their new world. State and County Cooperative Extension staff, community agencies, schools, and 4-H Club youth are reaching out to military youth ... Before, During and After their parents are deployed. This outreach effort is called Operation: Military Kids (OMK). Operation: Military Kids… 1 Creates a community support network for military youth "in our own backyard" when Soldier parents are deployed. Delivers recreation, social and educational programs for military youth living in civilian communities. Supports military kids coping with the stress of knowing their deployed parents may be in harm's way. Collaborates with schools to ensure that staff are attuned to the unique needs of military students. Educates the public on the impact of the deployment cycle on Soldiers, families, kids and the community as a whole. Becomes a part of the ongoing 4-H Program in the locations where there are military families. Contact Information for Questions regarding the MTL and OMK: 3 Overview of Mobile Technology Lab (MTL) The Mobile Technology Lab is, in essence, a mobile, wireless computer lab. It contains 15 laptop computers, a digital camera, a digital video camera, a printer, and a number of software packages that can be used to create a variety of media items that can be sent to loved ones who are serving in Active Duty. The lab provides access to technology to communicate with deployed loved ones, learn about technology, and make videos/pictures, etc to deployed loved ones. The MTL can be taken to activities and events around the state. The MTL will be featured at Indiana Pacers and Fever basketball games, at the Indiana State Fair, at county fairs throughout the state, and at Family Readiness Group meetings, among other locations. Individuals requesting the MTL at their event must first go through a certification program to be trained to use the lab. You can learn about training opportunities and request the MTL by contacting one of the OMK State Team Members (see page 3). General Access to the MTL Scheduling The MTL is packaged in three boxes, housed in a locked room when not in use, within the Department of Youth Development and Agricultural Education in the Agricultural Administration Building at Purdue University. Maintaining this central contact ensures that the location and scheduling plan of the MTL is known at all times. All OMK partners will have equal access to the use of the MTL. OMK program partners and Extension Educators who are interested in utilizing the MTL for State or county activities should check the scheduling plan maintained by the OMK State Team Members. They will then contact the State Team Leaders or the graduate assistant to schedule a date. Partners will be expected to plan ahead and schedule the use of the MTL as far in advance as possible to avoid scheduling conflicts. MTL scheduling will be on a first come first served basis and subject to the availability of partners to volunteer in supervising the use of the equipment. Training, led in a train-the-trainer format, will be provided to the volunteers on the operation and supervision of the MTL. 4 Transportation The following options will be explored in shipping the MTL within the state. On each scheduled date, the least cost option of transporting the MTL will be utilized. A team member will come to the Purdue campus to pick up the MTL. A team member will pick up the MTL from another member who used the MTL previously. The graduate assistant will deliver MTL to the location where it will be used. Due to the size of the boxes that constitute the MTL, it is recommended that a Van, SUV or similar vehicle be used to transport the lab. The three boxes in total weigh 300 pounds; at least two people are needed to load and unload them. Inventory After a successful schedule, the recipient is expected to take an inventory of all the hardware on the day the MTL is received. Check off equipment on inventory sheet as laid out in Form 1 prior to unpacking. Confirm receipt of equipment with phone call or e-mail to OMK State Contact prior to use. Check off equipment again during repacking. Put a copy of the completed inventory in an envelope and place it in Box 1 before returning the MTL. 5 Form 1: Inventory of Equipment in the MTL 2 BOX 1 Qty Equipment Check Qty in out 5 Laptops_#1-5 10 1 Printer 10 1 IEEE 1394 PC Card 1 Silver Fire Wire Cord 1 Wireless Access Point 1 D-Link 1 Digital Still Camera 1 Visioneer One-Touch 9220 Scanner 1 Laminator 15 USBs for floppy drives Scanner power cord and Camera USB Equipment 15 3 USB Headsets Surge protectors 1 1 5 Laptop power supply 1 1 Digital Video Camera (Camcorder) Remote control for camcorder DVD Burner External floppy disk drives 2 packs of DVD’s 1 1 1 15 3 Check in out BOX 3 Qty Qty 1 BOX 2 Equipment Check in out Laptops (#6-15) Laptop power cords Equipment Check in out 100’ Extension cord Camcorder adapter and power cord DVD adapter and power cord D-link power adapter 1 1 USB for digital still camera (white) USB for printer USB for scanner 1 1 1 1 3 USB for DVD Scanner power cord Printer power cord AV Cable Product manuals 2 Indian MTL has been reviewed and thus stored in 2 boxes. Click OK. Pinnacle Studio 9 opens in the edit mode. On the top left of the screen are the three video production steps: 1 Capture, 2 Edit and 3 Make Movie. Capturing Video Capture is the first step in using your video footage. Capture is the process of importing video from a video source such as a camcorder to a file on your PC's hard drive. The very first step in capturing is to switch into Studio's Capture mode by clicking the 1 Capture button at the top left corner of the screen. This opens the Capture mode interface, as shown on the next page, enabling you to set up and carry out video capture. The Album, at the top left of the screen, displays icons representing the video scenes as they are captured. The Player, at top right, lets you view the incoming video while cueing for capture, and monitor the capture itself. Readouts on the Player tell you the exact length of the captured video, and the number of frames dropped during the capture (normally zero). The Camcorder Controller, at bottom left, provides a tape counter display and a set of transport controls for operating the playback device. Finally, the Diskometer, at bottom right, displays the capture space remaining on the camcorder. It also provides the Start Capture button and buttons for setting capture options. 31 Step-by-Step Basics of the Capture Process: 1. Click the Capture button at the top of the screen if you are not already in capture mode. The Capture mode interface is displayed. 2. Click the Start Capture button on the Diskometer (bottom right hand corner of the screen). 3. Capture video dialogue box opens. Type a name for your capture video and click on Start Capture. 4. Sit back and watch the footage being captured to the album. 5. Click the stop capture button on the Diskometer at the point where you want your footage to end. Your video footage will show as video scene(s)/ slide(s) in the album. Editing Video Pinnacle Studio 9 opens in Edit mode each time it is launched, because that is the mode most often used. You can open capture files into the Album in Studio's Edit mode. Clips from "captured file" can be used in Studio as ingredients of your edited movies. The Edit mode display includes three main areas as shown on the next page. The Album contains the captured slides/video scenes you can select from to move to the movie window. The Movie Window is where you create your edited movie by 32 arranging video and sound clips, and by applying transitions and effects. You point to the slide in the album you want to add to the movie and drag it to the movie window. You can add titles, transitions, sound tracks, music and your voice to the movie. The Player provides playback and previewing for whichever item is currently selected. That may be an Album resource - such as a video scene, title or sound effect - or your edited/movie, complete with transitions, titles, effects and several audio tracks. It consists of two main areas: a preview window and playback controls. The preview window displays video images. The playback controls allow you to play the video, or go to an exact position within it. Movie window Unlock Help Undo, Redo Preview window Playback controls 33 Step-by-Step Basics of the Edit Process 1. Click on the 2 Edit button. 2. End 37 Addendum General Access to the Indiana MTL Scheduling The MTL which was originally in 3 boxes has been repackaged in two boxes. It is housed in a locked room when not in use, within the Department of Youth Development and Agricultural Education in the Agricultural Administration Building at Purdue University. Transportation The following options will be explored in shipping the MTL within the state. On each scheduled date, the least cost option of transporting the MTL will be utilized. A team member will come to the Purdue campus to pick up the MTL. A team member will pick up the MTL from another member who used the MTL previously. The graduate assistant will deliver MTL to the location where it will be used. The MTL will be shipped overnight via UPS or another similar carrier to the scheduled location. Due to the size of the boxes that constitute the MTL, it is recommended that a Van, SUV or similar vehicle be used to transport the lab. Each box weighs at least 70 pounds; at least two people are needed to load and unload them.
