A WORD FROM THE HEADMASTER
Of all the numerous events that happen at Trinity in the course of
a year, the Proms has unquestionably for me become one of the
absolute highlights, largely because it is a real family occasion.
It is one of the few times that the whole school community of
pupils, parents, staff, alumni and Governors, as well as friends and
neighbours of the school, all get together to enjoy an evening of
music. However, an evening like this is only a success because of
the hard work of a small number of people and, on behalf of the
school, I would like to thank all those on the TPA and school staff
who have worked incredibly hard to put on this terrific event.
I very much hope that as you are reading this the sun is shining,
(and if it’s not I hope you have an umbrella) and that you are
ready to enjoy an evening of excellent entertainment.

A WARM WELCOME FROM THE TPA
“Together enjoying the Trinity community ”
Welcome to our final event of the year, the Trinity Proms, an occasion for all
members of the Trinity community to celebrate the end of another school year,
whilst enjoying some wonderful music and refreshments on a warm (hopefully!)
summer’s evening.
The Trinity Parents’ Association, aims to co-ordinate and build a thriving social
community of parents, students, staff and old boys and girls. Our termly events are
priced to be as inclusive as possible and proceeds raised enable us to make donations to our elected charities and the school. This year we are thrilled to have supported three deserving charities, St Christopher’s Hospice, Book Aid
International and The Alzheimer’s Society as well as making contributions to the
school’s fantastic new learning facility in Wales, ‘The Boetius Centre’. Look out for
upcoming events on the website and in our termly newsletters, and save the date
for next term’s Ball—details on the back page.

OUR SPECIAL GUEST STARS
MARC ELLIOTT has a long track
record of television appearances,
including Lewis, M.I. High, The
Invisibles, Midsomer Murders and
The Bill, but he will be instantly
recognisable to EastEnders and
Holby City fans. However, many will
be surprised to learn of his theatre
pedigree. This includes five years
with the Royal Shakespeare
Company and appearing as part of
the original cast of The History Boys
for the Royal National Theatre and
its subsequent West End transfer,
as well as performing lead roles in
the West End musicals, City of
Angels and Urinetown.
ROSANNA HYLAND trained in
classical singing, jazz, tap and ballet
at Lasalle College of the Arts in
Singapore and the Actors’ Centre in
London. She has performed in Sister
Act at the London Palladium and Into
the Woods. Her West End musical
career includes appearances as
Princess Fiona in Shrek, Julie Jordan
in Carousel, Hope Cladwell in
Urinetown, the Musical and most
recently Betty Hapschatt in Shock
Treatment, the sequel to the Rocky
Horror Show.
OUR SPECIAL GUEST STARS
DERYN EDWARDS sang for several
years with the international "a
cappella" vocal group, The Swingle
Singers, appearing in venues as
diverse as Carnegie Hall, Ronnie
Scott's and La Scala, Milan. She also
has extensive operatic credits for the
Royal Opera House, Covent Garden,
Glyndebourne and D'Oyly Carte
companies. In recent years, Deryn has
been in the West End production of
Mamma Mia, the UK tour of Mary
Poppins, and has sung on numerous
film soundtracks. She is also wellknown for her authorship of several
children’s audio books.
MARK MEADOWS’ West End credits
include Urinetown, Mary Poppins,
Betty Blue Eyes and Richard III (with
Martin Freeman). He has sung as a
soloist for BBC Radio in Pal Joey, On
Your Toes, Candide, The Good
Companions, Wonderful Town and
Company, as well as Friday Night is
Music Night. Mark has also sung on
numerous film soundtracks,
including Star Wars, Lord of the
Rings and the Harry Potter series.
Acting roles have taken him from
Salisbury to Bath to Chichester. He
has just played the role of Hubert in
King John at Shakespeare’s Globe.

ALSO STARRING...
RACHEL INGLETON started as a
Junior Exhibitioner at the Royal College of
Music, where she was later awarded a
scholarship to study oboe and piano fulltime. Rachel has travelled worldwide
directed by soloists such as, Joshua Bell
and Murray Perahia, including the Far
East and South America. She regularly
guests with the Philharmonia, the LPO
and the LSO and plays in the West End as
a deputy in Les Misérables.
Opera highlights include performing on
stage in costume in Don Giovanni at Covent Garden and a tour to Japan this
September. She teaches at St Paul’s, Alleyns and here at Trinity and has
recently recorded the demonstration tracks for the Grade by Grade oboe
series for Boosey and Hawkes.
WITH...
TORRIN WILLIAMS started classical
guitar at the age of 7 and joined
Junior Guildhall 3 years later, where
he’s studied with Mark Ashford,
Amanda Cook and now Mark Eden.
He achieved distinction in grade 8
classical guitar in 2012 and the same
in piano in 2013. He currently
performs with National Youth Guitar
Ensemble
and as
leader of
London
Guitar
Circus.
LOIS ASHENDEN started playing flute
at the age of 5. She studies with
Karen Jones from the LPO and the
RAM. This year she joined the
National Youth Orchestra. She is
principal flute of Bromley Youth
Concert Band and Symphony
Orchestra and Trinity’s Chamber and
Symphonic Wind Orchestras. She
recently won
first prize at
the British
Harp Chamber
Music
competition.
OUR HOST FOR THE EVENING
JOHN SNELLING has returned to his native Surrey after
studying in Swansea, Nottingham and London, and
working in Wolverhampton, Bogota (yes, the Colombian
one) and Norwich. Happily ensconced with his wife and
daughter in the semi-rural idyll that is Coulsdon, they are
expecting a second child in October. Having spent 12
years as Head of Geography, he is now focusing on his
role of Head of Staff Development at Trinity.
With roles on stage, hosting talent competitions and appearances on Endemol’s (as
yet uncommissioned) ‘Lucky Pluckers’ and ‘So you think you’re smarter than a 10
year old’, it can be hard to tell that he is, in fact, a shy and retiring family man.
TRINITY MUSICIAN OF THE YEAR
SEBASTIAN HILL started the trombone at the age of ten and
now studies with David Whiston. He joined Trinity in 2010
and has played with many bands and orchestras at the
school. He has also successfully auditioned for the National
Children’s Orchestras and more recently the National Youth
Wind Orchestra. He attained distinction in Grade 8
trombone in summer 2014 and is currently working
towards his diploma. Seb is also an avid singer and as a
member of Trinity Boys’ Choir, he has performed in national
operas and prestigious venues in Germany, Poland and the UK.
MUSICAL DIRECTOR
LEWIS BRITO-BABAPULLE was educated at Trinity School,
where he played Bass in Trinity School Big Band. He
subsequently read Music at Oxford University as Organ
Scholar at St. Peter’s College. He graduated BA, 1st Class,
2004 and M.St., Distinction 2006 and is a Fellow of the
Royal College of Organists. He returned to his Alma
Mater in January 2015 as Head of Academic Music having
previously taught at Stowe School and St. Benedict’s,
Ealing. Lewis has broadcast and recorded as an Organist,
Accompanist, Continuo Player and Conductor and has
accompanied Choirs at Cathedrals in the UK and abroad.
THE TRINITY BIG BAND
Trinity Big Band is the senior ensemble of
Trinity's thriving Jazz Department which
also comprises the Junior Jazz Band,
directed by Roy Chilton, and the Almost
Big Band, directed by Gillian Plummer.
The Band is fortunate to receive
individual coaching from trumpeter, Brian
Rance, and the Len Phillips Big Band.
They returned to Ronnie Scott’s in May and gave a spectacular concert, ably assisted by the
Close Harmony Group and the 6th Form Jazz Quartet. Tours have included Spain, Cyprus,
Germany, Dubai and South Africa, which helped raise funds for the Sparrow Schools.
Headline performances this year have included a performance at the prestigious Solace
Annual Dinner in February at the Globe Under Globe on the Southbank.
Tonight marks the final performance of our U6th leavers. They are a group of fabulous
musicians and we would like to thank them for giving their talent and time over the years:
Elliott Bernard-Cooper, James Dugan, Thomas Hilditch, Freddie Meyers, Ola Onabolu and
Zoe Wells.

OLD PALACE PANS
With its three orchestras, six choirs, four steel pan
groups and various chamber ensembles, Old Palace
Music Department aims to encourage the musical
talents of all students. Polyphonic sings Evensong
monthly in Croydon Minster and in English
cathedrals. Its musicians regularly perform abroad;
venues include Montserrat Abbey in Barcelona, St
Mark’s Basilica in Venice, Cologne Cathedral in the
Rhineland and La Madelaine and Eurodisney in Paris. Recent performances include works by
Messiaen with the London Mozart Players and Eric Whitacre with the Maggini Quartet;
Dvorak’s opera The Jacobin with the BBC Symphony Orchestra, as well as operas at
Garsington and Glyndebourne.
Director - Paul Dowie has been teaching in Croydon for 25 years
and has been working with the Old Palace steel band for 9 years as
well as the Croydon Steel Orchestra. Highlights of the band’s
performance schedule are the National Panorama Champions of
Steel competition and Notting Hill Carnival. In 2010 he was awarded
the Ezekiel "Biggs" Yearwood outstanding achievement award from
the UK Pan Tuners Guild and the British Association of Steelbands.

TRINITY MUSIC DEPARTMENT
It’s been another busy year of music-making with an ever-increasing number of pupils
playing instruments and singing in choirs. Large ensembles featured in orchestral concerts,
the bands entertained at the Christmas Jazz Evening and our guitarists, pianists and
drummers all hosted their own events. Highlights have included:
Trinity Musician of the Year
The quality of this year’s performances was quite
exceptional. Congratulations to the winner Sebastian Hill
(trombone) with runners up Lois Ashenden (flute) and
Torrin Williams (guitar).
Stage and Screen
The Boys’ Choir has been busy celebrating its 50th anniversary. TV appearances have
included the boys singing with Aled Jones in Bradley Walsh’s Christmas Cracker, Gabriel Kuti
opened the John Bishop Christmas Show and there were re-runs of The Michael Bublé
Christmas Show and Messiah from the Foundling Hospital. They have featured on many film
soundtracks such as The Hunger Games: Mockingjay 1, Unbroken and San Andreas. Opera
appearances have included Carmen and L’enfant et les sortileges at Glyndebourne, The
Queen of Spades and Otello at English National Opera, The Turn of the Screw in Florence,
Shellshock in Brussels and a return to Aix-en-Provence with A Midsummer Night’s Dream.
Chamber Champions – again!
A trio comprising Ross Ah-Weng (violin), Amiri Harewood
(cello) and Eliott Richards (piano) maintained our proud
tradition of reaching the Pro Corda National Chamber
Music Competition for Schools Final and this year they
were crowned Chamber Champions. They performed in the
Holywell Music Room in Oxford and then at Fairfield in a
concert promoted by the London Mozart Players.
Orchestra Tour to Canada
The orchestra has been preparing for an ambitious and exciting summer tour to Canada,
organised by Director of Strings, Cristian Persinaru. Their repertoire includes Beethoven’s 1 st
Symphony, Elgar’s Serenade for Strings and Vivaldi’s Concerto in A minor for two violins, the
soloists being, Sebastian Blount and James Dugan. The orchestra is thrilled to be playing as
part of the Music Niagara Festival and at the Casa Loma and St James’ Cathedral in Toronto.
