Sébastien Rogues – Skipper Class40 GDF SUEZ – 2013 Season
4
Born in 1986, Sébastien Rogues spent his
entire childhood in the village of Urrugne
in the Basque Region, France. He took
up sailing at the age of six.
behind the rest of the fleet. His strong
showings in eight races earned him the
top rank in the circuit category at the
national level that year.
In 2007, at the age of 21, Sébastien
began taking part in high-level sailing
events, with the goal of becoming a
professional skipper. After acquiring his
first boat, a Mini 6.50 class boat (Pogo
2), he competed in solo races on the Mini
6.50 circuit, with promising results.
In 2010, Sébastien acquired a 6.50
prototype, with the goal of becoming the
lead competitor in that category.
Garnering four wins in eight races, he
finished number 2 in the circuit’s general
category, confirming his standing as a
“rising young talent.”
In 2008, he competed in five races,
landing a spot on the podium three
times, including a First Place win in the
Mini Port Médoc. To maximize his
chances, Sébastien set up shop that year
at the AOS training base in Lorient and
gathered together a top crew that
included trainer Tanguy Le Glatin.
In 2011, Sébastien made the Transat
6.50 La Charente-Maritime-Bahia the focal
point of his season. In an exhausting
sprint, and with great determination, he
won the race’s first leg. The second leg is
still a sore point: Rogues had to withdraw
from the race, to his great regret,
although he was in the lead on the
approach to Cape Verde. A fall on the
head of his canting keel inside the boat
displaced one of his vertebrae, causing
intense back pain and forcing him to cease
all physical activity. With great reluctance,
he dropped out of the race.
In 2009, Rogues competed in his first
transatlantic solo race, sponsored by Eole
Generation-GDF SUEZ, finishing in 8th
place in the general category, a
respectable showing for the race’s
youngest skipper. This was despite a
collision at the start of the race that put
him nearly twenty hours
1 • THE SKIPPER'S BACKGROUND
Bio
In 2012, Sébastien took the next
logical step, to compete at higher
speeds by moving up to the Class 40
category (monohulls measuring 12.28
meters in length). After just one
season and seven races, he came in
2nd in the annual
Class
40
championship, with a very nice podium
finish in 3rd Place in the Transat
Québec-Saint-Malo.
For the 2013 season, with the
renewed
support
of
partner
GDF SUEZ, Sébastien commissioned
his own Class 40 boat. Designed by
Samuel Manuard, the Mach 40
GDF SUEZ was launched on Monday,
March 11. Sébastien gathered a crew
of
renowned
experts
for
the
construction of this new addition to
the Class 40 fleet.
Sébastien Rogues – Skipper Class40 GDF SUEZ – 2013 Season

What benefits do you derive from
your partnership with GDF SUEZ?
First of all, I am able to progress much
more rapidly. We also share a strong
mutual esteem helping me achieve my
athletic and professional goals.
On a more personal level, through the
partnership I have welcomed many GDF
SUEZ employees on board. These
exchanges give me an opportunity to
share my passion for sailing in a fun and
informative way. This is very important
for me, and very rewarding.
You say that GDF SUEZ supports
your goals. What are those goals
this season?
After my performance last season, I
made the decision to commission a
new boat. The GDF SUEZ is now the
latest addition to the Class 40 fleet. My
ambition, then, is to perform as well
as I can in every race I enter.
Still, all my efforts this season are
building toward the Transat Jacques
Vabre in November and the Route du
Rhum in 2014.
Tell us more about your new boat.
Commissioning the boat took my
knowledge of sailing to a new level,
because I played an active part in its
construction at every stage, working
closely
with
Samuel
Manuard
(Architect-Designer-Skipper)
and
Nicolas Groleau (Site foreman, for
JPS Production). We analyzed every
detail to optimize the design for sailing,
with a constant focus on performance.
Personally, it was an emotional
experience to see my first boat leave
the shipyard after months of intensive
labor. From the very first test run, I
knew we had reason to be proud of
what we had accomplished.
1 • THE SKIPPER'S
Sébastien,
when
did
your
relationship with GDF SUEZ begin?
Our partnership began in 2009 as part of
the GDF SUEZ “Young Talents” initiative.
I presented my project and they made
the decision to support me. We have
come a long way since then, always
united around a common vision.
BACKGROUND
Sébastien in his own
words…
What do you believe you bring to
GDF SUEZ?
It means a lot to me to be able to give
GDF SUEZ employees a glimpse behind
the scenes of my races. I am constantly
aware
of
the
importance
of
communication, which is why I want to
involve, as much as possible, everyone
who supports me in this project. I’ve
said it before: my collaboration with
GDF SUEZ is more than just a
partnership; we share a strong mutual
confidence.

The co-skipper
1 • CO- SKIPPER’S BACKGROUND
TRANSAT JACQUES VABRE
Fabien Delahaye (age 28)
Position: Tactician - Sailor
Fabien Delahaye was born in 1984 in Rouen, France. He began sailing at the age of nine, soon
after his family moved to the Normandy coast. At age 23, licensed by the SRCO (Société des
Régates de Caen Ouistreham), he became the top dinghy sailor in his region and a Young
Sailing Hopeful at the national level. He then entered the Figaro circuit with his sights set high.
French Single-Handed Offshore Racing Champion in 2011, Fabien was designated Macif Skipper
in 2012 and as such is receiving two years of support that allow him to compete on the Figaro
Bénéteau circuit.
Talented and discreet, the young skipper, sponsored by the Basse-Normandie Region, has
competed with Sébastien a number of times this season. Together, they clinched four major
victories, winning the Grand Prix Guyader, ArMen, Les Sables-Horta-Les Sables, and Rolex
Fastnet races.
In the 2013 Solitaire du Figaro, Fabien finished an impressive 12th out of 41 in the general
category, and is now more motivated than ever to prepare for the Transat Jacques Vabre race,
which he will co-skipper with Sébastien.
What Sébastien says about Fabien:
“Although Fabien and I met only recently, we really got to know each other on the return leg of the Sables-Horta-Les Sables race.
In addition to being on the same wavelength as sailors, we get along extremely well on a personal level. We spend time together off
the course when we can, which is very important when preparing for a long-haul race such as Transat Jacques Vabre.”

Amélie Mauresmo, the world’s nº 1 women’s
tennis player in 2004 and 2006, will be
alongside Sébastien Rogues on the docks at
Le Havre Saturday, November 2, on the eve
of the Transat Jacques Vabre race.

As the French women’s tennis player with
the most titles since the start of the modern
Open tennis era in 1968, Amélie brings her
winner’s fire to the christening of the new
Class 40 GDF SUEZ just before this
legendary race.
Amélie Mauresmo shares with us:
“I enthusiastically accepted Sébastien’s invitation to christen his new
boat, the GDF SUEZ, before the start of the Transat Jacques Vabre race.
With the results he’s already obtained, I hope it will bring him continued
good luck!”
Current captain of the French Fed Cup team
and co-director of the Paris Open GDF SUEZ,
Amélie Mauresmo agreed to assume the role
as Sébastien’s sponsor for this important
race. A symbolic role, but so important for
him. In fact, through their shared
sponsorship by the GDF SUEZ Group, the
two athletes have known each other for
several years.
A true friendship has grown up between
them. Amélie didn’t hesitate for a second to
accept when the young skipper proposed
she be the one to christen his new boat.
Sébastien Rogues – Skipper Class40 GDF SUEZ – 2013 Season
8
Sébastien gathered a crew of
renowned experts to build his new
boat, one of the latest additions to the
Class
40
fleet.
At
mid-season,
outstanding performances in earlier races
have given Sébastien a well of
confidence from which to draw in
preparing for the Transat Jacques Vabre
and next year’s Route du Rhum.
The boat, built according to the plans of
naval architect Samuel Manuard, is the
next in a line of boats that regularly
graced the podiums and won major
victories of the 2012 sailing season (its
predecessors include the Mare, owned by
Jorg Riechers of Germany, and Jack in
the box, owned by Aloys le Claquin).
Sébastien’s Mach 40 is therefore the
third generation to reap the benefits of
the
designer’s
experience,
which,
combined with that of the skipper, made
it possible to truly optimize certain
elements.
Manuard simplified the boat’s handling
by
limiting
parasitic
swinging
movements and concentrating the
weight of the boat as close as possible
to its center of gravity. The high speed
potential of this approach has been
borne out by this new Mach 40, the
GDF SUEZ.
TESTIMONIALS:
Sébastien,
the
skipper:
«I commissioned construction of a
new Class 40 in order to remain
competitive and benefit from the latest
sailing technology. I took on the risks
of ownership to give myself every
chance of succeeding at this sport.
Under Class 40 rules, putting together
a new boat is fairly simple, but the
upcoming races will allow me to step it
up a notch, so that I can be
completely ready for the Transat
Jacques Vabre. I’m glad I got this
experience.
Overseeing
the
construction of a boat is an enormous
responsibility. You have to surround
yourself with the right people. »
2 • THE GDF SUEZ: A NEW GENERATION OF PERFORMANCE
Genesis of the Class 40 GDF SUEZ
Samuel Manuard architectdesigner-skipper:
«I am proud to have been chosen by
Sébastien for the construction of his
boat. It’s the realization of a longstanding dream, since we had already
planned to build a Mini 6.50 together.
All that’s left now is for Sébastien to win
at the helm of this Mach 40, which I
fully expect to see.. »
Nicolas Groleau, job foreman
JPS Production:
« I am very pleased I got the chance to
work with Sébastien. We had some very
fruitful exchanges, thanks to his
experience in Class 40 and the other
categories. He is very open to new
ideas, so we quickly found common
ground and were able to create
something simple and efficient, but also
ambitious. Between the two of us, I’m
certain we made the right decisions ! »
Architect Samuel Manuard paid particular
attention to details that impact racing
performance,
without,
however,
sacrificing anything in terms of safety or
ergonomics, thereby ensuring maximum
protection of the skipper.

The Class 40 category
was created in 2004. Its association has
120 members from 22 different countries
and a fleet of approximately forty boats
that compete regularly. The goal of Class
40 is to organize a program of high-level
ocean races for amateur and experienced
competitors alike (including professional
skippers) in an atmosphere of unity,
camaraderie, and shared experience.
Class 40 gives high-level sailors an
exceptional springboard to the great
trans-oceanic races on machines capable
of crossing the high seas, and brings
them into contact with the giants of the
Vendée Globe, the 60-foot Open monohulls (18.28 m).

season in his brand new boat.
Ludovic Aglaor was co-skipper. In
the lead position after 30 hours at
sea, the two were forced to retire
from the race due to forecasts of
a major depression. Still in the
breaking-in period, Sébastien
decided against risking damage to
his new Mach 40 and jeopardizing
the rest of his season.
In the lead throughout the race,
Sébastien Rogues and the crew of
the GDF SUEZ were in position to
win the Record SNSM from the
outset. The results confirmed the
boat potential and boosted the
crew’s confidence.
During this first crewed race of
the season, Sébastien fine-tuned
the calibrations on his mono-hull
and got to know his boat
thoroughly, using the coastal runs
to experiment with different sail
configurations
to
optimize
performance.
Sébastien’s domination of both
the first and second stages of the
Les

race,
accompanied by Fabien Delahaye
on the return leg, caught the
attention of the entire sailing
world. Giving up nothing to his
rivals, he seized a decisive victory
in this important Class 40 race.

Transat Jacques Vabre
Le Havre
The Transat Jacques Vabre is a
transatlantic two-handed race (with 2sailor crews) that has been held every 2
years since 1995; the first event in 1993
was a solo race. The course starts at the
port of Le Havre, France.
In 2013, the prestigious contest will
celebrate its 20th anniversary with an
arrival in Itajai, Brazil, after traveling more
than 5,450 miles (approximately 10,000
km).It is open to three categories of boats
(multihulls and 60- and 40-foot monohulls), and 3 titles are at stake.
Sébastien’s take:
“After winning five times this season, I
am feeling confident, and I trust I am
finally ready for this mythic trans-Atlantic
race. I'm hoping to be good and ready
for this legendary Transat. The greatest
seamen have competed in this race, and
it's a proud moment for me, since it will
be the first time I sail in it. It's the
longest Transat. At nearly 5,500 miles,
racing strategy plays a key role – which I
don't mind a bit. »
www.transat-jacques-vabre.com
The Transat Jacques Vabre is the marquee
race of the year for Sébastien, the one he
has been building toward throughout the
2013 season. Keenly aware of what’s at
stake in this mythic competition, he took
on Fabien Delahaye as co-skipper. Present
during his triumphs at the Guyader Grand
Prix and ArMen races, Fabien teamed up
with Sébastien again for the return leg of
the Sables-Horta-Les Sables race and
made it the latest in a series of brilliant
victories.

Allmer has accumulated over 100 years
of experience in its field and is
recognized as the top specialist in
marine safety apparel. Its ironclad image
is built on a foundation of quality hightech products designed to stand up
under the toughest conditions facing
ocean lovers in both coastal and
offshore settings. Allmer has also earned
legitimacy in the sailing world through
its support of renowned sailors and
rising young skippers alike (such as Paul
Vatine,
Yvan
Bourgnon,
Nicolas
Troussel, Frédéric Duthil, Stanislas
Maslard, and Sébastien Rogues). Such
sponsorships position it to receive the
best possible feedback in developing its
product lines.
A strong presence on the Figaro circuit
with its own boat until 2011, Allmer is
now expressing its taste for athleticism
and zeal for its Norman roots by
investing in competitions such as the
Normandy Channel Race, Normandy
Sailing Week and the more recent Le
Havre Allmer Cup, an important event
for
French
sailboat
racing
championship hopefuls.
Allmer was created in Le Havre,
France, in 1910, and has been
operating in Normandy ever since.
From its beginnings as a maker of
waxed cotton jackets for fishermen, it
has developed into related areas of
expertise, and now focuses on creating
protective gear for sailors in extreme
conditions. Allmer’s vast marine
experience makes its partnership with
Sébastien Rogues a natural fit. It is a
clear reflection of the values they
share: reliability, motivation, safety,
longevity
and
respect
for
the
environment.
Allmer established its brand in the
1970s with the first “Flotation Jacket,”
which soon became a “must” in
professional seamen’s safety gear. It
then diversified into marine sportswear
but hit rough waters in the late 1980s
with the exportation of textile
manufacturing to Asia. For many years
it refocused exclusively on its
professional product lines, but in 2006
Allmer launched a new “recreational”
line with prime positioning and well
established brand notoriety. This
Norman fixture continues to pursue its
development while remaining ever true
to its credo: innovation and technical
quality over all.

Leader in marine electronics, NKE
Marine Electronics supplies Sébastien
with indispensable instruments for
offshore and single-handed racing.
In the 1980s, the available pleasure
sailing instruments were analog; every
sensor had a pointer display. Noël
Kerebel, a sailing professional at the
time, used his knowledge of electronics
to
conceive
of
and
design
a
microprocessor-based
system
that
monitored and displayed wind, speed,
depth, and course. The first pleasure
boating system with a micro processor
came out in 1984. Kerebel founded NKE
in 1986. In 1992, Topline products hit
the market, followed by Gyropilot in
1995. NKE has been developing and
designing
to
improve
system
performance ever since, with one goal in
mind: “reliability in innovation!”
Quantum Sail Design Group was
formed in 1996 by a group of
independent
and
experienced
sailmakers. The firm has grown to
more than 60 sales and service outlets
throughout
the
world
with
headquarters
in
Traverse
City,
Michigan. Sails are built at three, stateof-the-art
manufacturing
centers
strategically located around the globe.
Quantum sails are known for their
superior performance, durability and
exceptional shape-holding due to a sail
design, engineering and manufacturing
process known as iQ Technology™.
Quite simply, it is the most intelligent
sail design system in the industry.

Sébastien Rogues – Skipper Class40 GDF SUEZ – 2013 Season

This year, Sébastien chose to support
the La Voix De l’Enfant organization,
which the GDF SUEZ Foundation
has supported since its creation.
As a passionate sailor, Sébastien wanted
to share his love of the sea and offshore
racing with disadvantaged children.
La Voix De l’Enfant, an umbrella
organization, represents 77 charitable
associations in nearly 100 countries. Its
aim is to “respond to and defend all
children suffering adversity in any part
of the world.” La Voix De l’Enfant and its
member associations support many
programs aimed at protecting children
from violence and helping them develop
and reach their full potential.
The approach taken by La Voix De
l’Enfant and its member associations is
based on three specific guiding
principles:
Standing with the child
A federative approach
Because of its deep commitment to children, La Voix
De l’Enfant cannot remain indifferent to their suffering,
considering that such suffering is not inevitable. It
believes that staying silent or feigning ignorance to
avoid offending some authority, or refusing to defend
the dignity and integrity of a child in distress, is
tantamount to failure to assist a person in danger, a
punishable offense under French law. For La Voix De
l’Enfant, violations or dysfunctional situations that
negatively impact children’s lives, whether in France or
elsewhere, must be brought to light so that they can
be addressed, because solutions do exist.
The many member associations of
La Voix De l’Enfant working on the
ground constitute a permanent
network making it possible to
intervene
forcefully
once
information has been gathered.
This network brings several points
of view to the same reality – the
reality of the child in adversity –
and develops actions adapted to
the situation in the field (tsunamis,
lack of civil status, difficulties in
gathering
statements
from
children:
Medico-Legal Walk-in
Units at hospitals for children who
are victims of sexual and other
types of violence). Best practices
are shared within the network and
local actions are supported by La
Voix De l’Enfant to amplify their
impact and spread the word so
that further problems may be
avoided.
A pragmatic, realistic approach
For La Voix De l’Enfant, laws, regulations, and
international treaties must be enforced before new
ones are developed that will not necessarily solve the
problem. Too many children are deprived of their
rights throughout the world. Attitudes must change,
and La Voix De l’Enfant is helping to effect this
transformation. We must say no to indifference and
enable children to stand up for themselves, without
institutionalizing them or otherwise handicapping their
future as adults.
In 1987 and 1992, La Voix De l’Enfant received the
Human Rights Award from the Republic of France.
