MEMORIAL FLOWERS
th
The Altar flowers this morning are given in celebration of Hannah Lafler’s 96 Birthday.
Language In Worship: Because language has the power to shape our thinking about one another, All Saints Church makes every
effort to bring the language of worship into conformity with the principles of biblical theology that affirm that the personhood of God
embraces all that is truly male and female, and that men and women are equals. Therefore, in our worship, we take our Bible
readings from an inclusive language lectionary which is often truer to original sources in references to men, to women, or to people,
and expands our concept of God beyond exclusively masculine terms. In Prayer Book liturgies we make minimal but symbolically
important changes which denote our commitment to inclusive expression. Some historical texts that are widely known and loved are
left unaltered. From time to time, we shall invite our congregation to participate in special liturgies which give full, creative expression
to inclusivity in worship. The words of the liturgy are from the 1979 Book of Common Prayer. The readings are from the New Revised
Standard Version of the Bible, lectionary year C, as well as from The Message and from Inclusive Hebrew Scriptures and New Testament
published by Priests for Equality.
Assisted listening devices are available at the Tape Ministry table
on the lawn, for use at the 9:00 and 11:15 services and Rector’s Forum.
We ask that you extend a respectful courtesy to others by silencing all
cell phones and pagers prior to entering the church.
PREPARATION FOR WORSHIP IN GOD’S NAME
PRAYER OF MEDITATION
As the people gather before the service begins, we encourage you to use the following prayer for meditation.
Loving God, the source of strength and peace: Take from us all that inhibits the flow of your spirit, break
down the walls that separate us, with hands of compassion wash away our fear, our resentment and our
hardness of heart, enable us to become centered and still, aware of your Presence, here, now, to heal and to
transform. We pray in the Spirit of Christ, our Healer. Amen.

LESSON Seated.

A Reading from Sirach (10:12–18).
The beginning of human pride is to forsake the Lord; the heart has withdrawn from its Maker. For the beginning of pride is
sin, and the one who clings to it pours out abominations. Therefore the Lord brings upon them unheard-of calamities, and
destroys them completely. The Lord overthrows the thrones of rulers, and enthrones the lowly in their place. The Lord
plucks up the roots of the nations, and plants the humble in their place. The Lord lays waste the lands of the nations, and
destroys them to the foundations of the earth. The Lord removes some of them and destroys them, and erases the memory
of them from the earth. Pride was not created for human beings, or violent anger for those born of women.
Minister: Hear what the Spirit is saying to God’s people.
People:
Thanks be to God.
A period of silence is observed following the reading.
HYMN “Blest Are the Pure In Heart” Standing — all who are able; everyone sings.
GOSPEL Remain standing.
9:00 David Mason
11:15 Sally Howard
Minister: The Good News of Jesus as written in Luke (14:1, 7–14).
People:
Glory is yours, O Christ.
On one occasion when Jesus was going to the house of a leader of the Pharisees to eat a meal on the Sabbath, they were
watching him closely. When he noticed how the guests chose the places of honor, he told them a parable. “When you are
invited by someone to a wedding banquet, do not sit down at the place of honor, in case someone more distinguished than
you has been invited by your host; and the host who invited both of you may come and say to you, ‘Give this person your
place,’ and then in disgrace you would start to take the lowest place. But when you are invited, go and sit down at the lowest
place, so that when your host comes, he may say to you, ‘Friend, move up higher’; then you will be honored in the presence
of all who sit at the table with you. For all who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be
exalted.” Jesus said also to the one who had invited him, “When you give a luncheon or a dinner, do not invite your friends
or colleagues or your relatives or rich neighbors, in case they may invite you in return, and you would be repaid. But when
you give a banquet, invite those who are poor or have physical infirmities or are blind. And you will be blessed, because they
cannot repay you, for you will be repaid at the resurrection of the righteous.”
Minister: The Gospel of the Savior.
People:
Praise to you, O Christ.
Children in Kindergarten – Fifth grade are invited to follow the banner to the Learning Center for Children’s Chapel.

SANCTUS/BENEDICTUS Remain standing; everyone sings.

CONSECRATION Kneeling or standing — all who are able.
Priest: Holy God, known and beyond all knowing, in your image you created us, male and female, giving the
earth into our care. In our arrogance, we lost touch with the breath of God within us, with the divinity
of the creation, growing blind to its beauty and deaf to its harmonies. But through Christ, born of a
woman, your deep abiding love reclaimed us and realigned us with the grain of the universe.
On that evening in an upper room, with his friends around him, our brother Jesus blessed the bread,
broke it, and shared it with all who were gathered: This bread is my body, an offering of God’s love
for all. When you eat it, remember me. Taking the cup of wine, he blessed it and shared it with all
who were gathered: This wine is my blood, God’s promise of new life for all. When you drink it,
remember me.
God, in the memory of Jesus who healed people and washed his disciples’ feet, who loved children and
honored outcasts, who fed people and turned water into wine, who died and rose to new and unending life,
we ask that you breathe on this bread and this wine, filling them with the transforming power of the cosmic
Christ.
Priest and People:
Breathe through us, God, that our bodies, minds, souls, and spirits may be filled with your lifegiving presence. Make us again a holy people, strongly bound to you, firmly rooted in the earth,
with eyes to see all life as sacred. Empower us to spread the light of Christ in our wondrous and
confusing world. Amen.
Priest: And now, as our Savior Christ has taught us, in the language of our choice, we are bold to say,
Priest and People:
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name,
thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses,
as we forgive those who trespass against us.
And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.
For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.
BREAKING OF THE BREAD
A period of silence is kept, during which the priest breaks the consecrated bread.
Priest: We are one bread, one body.
People:
We will love one another as Christ loves us.
INVITATION
Priest: The Gifts of God for the People of God.
All persons are welcome to come to the altar to stand or kneel. Let an usher know if you would prefer taking communion at
your seat. Children of all ages are included in this invitation. Ushers will assist you.
Please take hold of the chalice and guide it to your lips. If you do not wish to receive the wine, please acknowledge the
chalice by touching it when it is offered. After receiving the bread and wine, it is customary to say, “Amen.”
We no longer practice dipping the wafer in the chalice of wine; health professionals advise that this method carries more risk
than drinking from the common cup. You are invited to either drink from or touch the cup.
Gluten-Free wafers and smaller communion cup for those with difficulty swallowing are available in the Baptistry (the backside of the rail on the left as you face the altar).
12
Members of our Healing Ministry are available in the Chapel for all who wish to receive prayers and the laying on of
hands. Simply make your way to the Chapel during the serving of communion. Please note that all prayers are kept
confidential and if you want follow-up you must initiate the discussion.
At the 9:00 service, children in the chancel re-join their families.

Making Art in this Time of War
with Seema Sueko
Sunday, August 28, 10:15 a.m. in the Forum
“When I watch the news, check social media,
read the newspaper, it all feels so angry and full of
hate. I feel we are a nation at war with itself. The
Fantasticks is a musical that ultimately teaches us
how to love. We learn this by watching Matt and
Luisa’s journey: the false happy ending love, the
pulling apart and hurting each other, and finally, the
return and learning how to love deeply, maturely,
selflessly. It’s a lesson that is sorely needed today.”
—Seema Sueko

one, consider bringing the bread and wine up the
aisle for communion at the 9:00 or 11:15 a.m. Sunday
service. After offering these “oblations” to the priest at
the altar, you stand in the circle with the other ministers
for the Eucharistic prayer, receive communion, and then
return to your seat. You may do this with a partner or be
paired with someone else. To sign up or for more information, please contact Beverly Franco at 626.280.9048.
