A Message from the President
IamproudtosaythatAthensStateisonthecuspofgreatthings.In
Augustof2008,Iinheritedagroupoffacultyandstaffwhohavebeenvocaland
participatory as to the direction needed to champion our institution’s mission.
Atthesametime,Iinheritedacampusthatwasburgeoningwiththepossibilities
ofwhatitcouldbe.Withallofthiscameacurriculumthathadthepowerand
foresighttogrowandchangewiththeneedsoftoday’smodernstudent.
We have accomplished much in 2009 and have laid the groundwork for
muchtodoin2010andbeyond.Todefineandclarifyourpurpose,wehave
developeda groupofadministrators andcommunityleaderstoplot thecourse
forAthensStateoverthenexttenyears.Thisgroup,Vision2020,willbecharged
withcompilingacomprehensivemasterplantobecompletedbytheendofthis
year.IexpectthisplantobeaguidefortheUniversityforthenextdecade.
OurcommitmenttoprovidingstateͲofͲtheͲartfacilitiesforourstudentsis
obviousbytherecentcompletionoftwomajorrenovations–Sandersand
WatersHallsͲandourshovelsaresharpenedtobegintherenovationofMcCain
Hallthisspring.WiththerenovationofWatersHallalone,wedoubledthe
teachingandlaboratoryspaceandcompletedneededaccessibilityandesthetic
improvementsinoneofthemostutilizedbuildingsoncampus.
We have looked at our curriculum offered and reacted by developing
courseworkthatnotonlyservestheneedsofthestudent,butalsotheneedsof
thejobmarketsbothlocallyandnationally.Threenewmajorshavebeen
developedinourCollegeofBusinessalonethatfocusdirectlyonservicesthatare
neededtofillexpectedpositionswithinalocalmilitaryexpansionplan.
InMayoflastyearIwashumbledandhonoredtohavebeenformally
inauguratedaspresidentofAthensStateUniversity.Inmyspeechtothe
colleagues,students,alumniandfriendsgathered,Imadethestatement,
“…Ibelieveourbestdaysareaheadofus.Iamexcitedbythevisionofthefuture
Iseefrommyvantagepoint.”Istandbythesewordstoday.
IhopeyouwillenjoythisissueofTheColumnandreadingaboutourplans
and accomplishments. Please keep us in mind while we craft a historic new

Current Renovation Projects
AthensStateUniversityhastheuniqueprivilegeofbeingthestewardofsomeofthefinestexamplesofarchiͲ
tectureinthestateofAlabama.Butwiththisprivilegecomesgreatresponsibility.
KeepingourfacilitiesinpeakoperatingorderrequiresforeͲ
sight,dedicationandasubstantialamountoffunding.Thesethree

componentshavealwaysactedasstrongfootingsforourpastprojects

and,goingforward,areessentialinourupcomingefforts.
Whetheritbestructuralorfunctional,theseproposedrenovaͲ
tionprojectsarenecessaryforAthensStatetocontinuetoofferour
studentsandthecommunitycuttingͲedge,facilitiesinwhichweallcan
sharepride.
Thesebuildingsbelongtoallofus,andIhopeyouwillconsider
partneringwithusonourmissiontoseetheprojectstofruition.They
willassureabetterAthensStateUniversity.
WatersHall.NamedforformertrusteeNewmanWaters,laboͲ
ratoryandinstructionalspacewasbuiltin1955andhasservedtheUniͲ
versitywellasasciencetraininggroundwithoutamajorrenovation
untilthistime.Thethreestory,25,000squarefootstructurehasbeen
totallyupdatedtobetterservethecampusfamilywithstateoftheart
labsandtechnology.Theprojectwascompletedinearly2010.
SandersHall.NamedforBoardPresidentW.T.Sanders,thisformerresiͲ
McCainHall
dencehallbuiltin1912hasbeenconvertedtohousetheCollegeofBusiness.
Plans
Thethreestory,10,000squarefootstructurewasrecentlyrenovatedinthe
fallof2009.
McCainHallwasconstructedin1962andoriginallyservedasdormitory
housingforfemaleundergraduates.ThebuildingisnamedforDr.Virgil
McCainwhoservedastheUniversity'spresidentfrom1959to1966.Today,
McCainHallhousestheUniversity'sCollegeofEducation.Renovationswill
beginin2010.

College of Business Responds to Military Needs
ThreenewbusinessprogramsdesignedtosupporttheTennesseeValley’sBaseReͲ
alignmentandClosing(BRAC)initiativewerelaunchedbyAthensStateUniversitybeginning
withthespringsemesterof2010.
ThenewmajorsareAcquisitionandContractManagement,Enterprise
SystemsManagement,alsoknownasEnterpriseResourcePlanning(ERP),and
LogisticsandSupplyChainManagement.Allthreeofthenewprogramswillbetaught
throughAthensState’sCollegeofBusiness.TheUniversityinitiatedthenew
programstoassisttheeffortsoftheTennesseeValleyBRAC(BaseRealignmentandClosing)
CommitteeandtoultimatelyaidthelongͲtermneedsoftheworkforcethatwillbe
employedonRedstoneArsenalandthroughoutNorthAlabamaandSouthTennessee.

TheannouncementwasmadeonOctober20,2009attheHuntsvilleMadisonCountyChamberofCommerce.
BRACwillbringthousandsofjobstotheNorthAlabamaarea.ManyofthejobsthatwillbecomingtotheArsenalwill
requireskillsetsthatofferedthroughthethreenewmajors.BecauseofthelargenumberofjobsdirectlyrelatedtotheArseͲ
nal,themajorswillbetaughtfromagovernmentcontractingandmanagementperspective.AllthreeprogramswillbeofͲ
feredinatraditionalformatatRedstoneArsenalaswellasonline.
“AthensStateisrespondingtoadirectworkforcedevelopmentneedaspartoftheBRACeffort,”saidAthensState
PresidentBobGlenn.“LargenumbersofthejobsthatwillbecomingtoRedstoneArsenalandtheTennesseeValleywillbe
directlytiedtoworkinthesethreeareas.Webelievethesethreemajorswillopensignificantcareeropportunitiesforour
students.”
InAcquisitionandContractManagement,studentswillgainknowledgeoftheacquisitionandcontractingprocesses
toincludethepurchasingofgoodsandservices,pricing,negotiatingofcontracts,administrationofcontracts,contractlaw,
andresponsibilitiesfromcontractawardtoterminationofthecontract.AnemphasiswillbeplaceduponfederalcontractͲ
ing.ThisprogramwillincludeastudyoftheFederalAcquisitionRegulations.
EnterpriseSystemsManagement(ESM)isadegreedesigned
topreparestudentstomanageasingleenterpriseͲwidecomputer
softwaresystemusedtocoordinateallresources,information,and
functionsofanorganization.StudentswhoenrollinthisdegreeproͲ
gramwillexpandtheirunderstandingofERPsystemsandhowthey
areusedtointegratedepartmentsandfunctionsacrossgovernment
agenciesandcorporationsthroughtheuseofthesoftwareapplicaͲ
tionsystemSAP.TheywillalsogaintheknowledgeandskillsnecesͲ
sarytoselect,implement,administer,andoperateERPsystems.A
focusofthedegreeprogramistouseERPsystemstointegratethe
acquisitionprocesswiththelogisticsprocess.Inaddition,thestudent
willunderstandhowERPsystemsareusedtomanageactivitiesreͲ

CheekreceivedhisdoctorateinPoliticalStudiesfromTheCatholicUniversityofAmerͲ
icain1998,andheholdsmastersdegreesfromWesternCarolinaandDukeUniversities.His
responsibilitiesatBrewtonͲParkerincludedfunctioningastheChiefDevelopmentOfficerand
supervisingthestaffsofAlumniRelations,Development,andAthletics.

theirranksaneasyone,”saidCheek.“Ilookforwardtobecomingamemberoftheirfaculty,
andapartoftheAthenscommunity.”
PriortohispositionatBrewtonͲParker,CheekwasanAssociateProfessorofPolitical

A Gathering of Athens College friends from the late 1960s
OnSeptember25,2009,fortyͲfouryearsafterstudentsfromNewJersey,NewYork,andenvironsfirstappearedon
thecampusofAthensCollege(nowAthensStateUniversity),anumberofstudentsreturnedtoAthens,Alabama,forareunͲ
ion.FormerstudentsandevensomeprofessorswhohadmetatAthensCollegeduringthesixtiesgatheredinAthensfor
whattheorganizersaffectionatelydubbed"TheGeezerfest."
ThisreunionofstudentsfromAthensCollegefromthe1960'swasalsoreferredtoasthethirdYankeeInvasion.The
first"invasion"tookplaceinthe1860sduringtheCivilWar,thesecondinthelate1960s(duringtheVietnamWar),andthe
thirdontheweekendofSeptember25,2009.Thistimeweallsaid,"Yankee,comehome."
AthensCollegeandthecityofAthenswerefardifferentplacesoverfortyyearsago.Inthe1960sthecollegewasstill
aprivateMethodistinstitutionwithasmallstudentbody.ThecityofAthenswasdry,andmostAthenianshadneverheardof
ahippiemuchlessseenone.Notthatthesestudentswerehippies,mostofthemwerenot.Buttheywerecertainlydifferent.
ThesestudentswereonlyacoupleofyearsyoungerthanIwas,despitethefactthatIwastheirinstructor,andIwasfasciͲ
natedbythem.
IrememberoneofmystudentsnamedAnthonywhowasanartmajor.Anthonywouldmendhisraggedbluejeans
duringmyliteratureclass,andhewroteinsuchalargeandfloridscriptthathehadtowritehisanswerstothetestaround
theedgesofthetestpaperinordertofitthemin.Healsomadethedecorationsformydaughter'ssecondbirthdayparty
whichhadthethemeofAliceinWonderland.Ikeptthosemarvelouspostersforalmostthirtyyears.
Findingspaceforanswersonaliteraturetestwasnothingcomparedtofindingspaceonthecampusfornearlythree
thousandstudents.OverthenextthreeyearsthestudentpopulationtripledandwentfrombeingmadeupprimarilyofcomͲ
muterstudentstobeingalmostentirelyresidential.Everydaywasanadventure.
DuringthattimeadoorknockerdisappearedfromthedoorofBrownHallonthecollegecampus.Nooneknew
whereithadgoneorwhohadtakenit.ThenonApril16,2008,apackagearrivedintheofficeofPresidentJerryBartlett.InͲ
sidethepackage,whichborethepostmarkHillsboro,NewJersey,wasananonymousletter.Beneaththeletter,cradledina
brightredfoam,wasanornatebrassdoorknockerengravedwiththewords:"BrownHall1909."Themysteriousknockerhad
beenreturnedafterfortyͲthreeyears.Theaccompanyingletterreadasfollows:
"FortyͲthreeyearsagoIwasremovedfromBrownHallonthiscampusbyasmallgroupofwellmeaningbutimmaͲ
tureandmisdirectedstudents.Insomeconvolutedway,mytakingwassupposetobolsterschoolspirit.Itdidnot,ofcourse,
evoketheintendedresponse.
"OvertheyearsIhavetraveledthecountry,mycaretakersdisͲ
chargeddiligenceandrespectnotwithstandingtheirgrowingconcern
andpangofconscience.
"Inowreturnhometomyproperrestingplace.Thecircleis
complete.
"Mycaretakersextendedtheirmostsincereregret,admiration
andrespectforAthensStateUniversity."
Thecircleismostdefinitelycomplete.Notonlydidthestudents
returntoAthensStateafterafortyyearhiatus,theyalsomadeadonaͲ
tionof$1,000tothecollegeasawayofsayingthankyou.
The2009"Geezerfest"evokedsuchanenthusiasticresponse
thatorganizersarealreadyplanningthenextGeezerfest.Iplantobe

Dr.SandraSimsͲdeGraffenried,anAthensStateUniversitygraduateandthe
formerexecutivedirectoroftheAlabamaAssociationofSchoolBoards,hasbeenseͲ
lectedforinductionintotheAlabamaEducationalLeadershipHallofFame.Shewas

inspirationtoourcurrentandfuturestudentsintheCollegeofEducation.”
SimsͲdeGraffenriedearnedabachelor’sdegreein1967andherMastersin
1970fromAthensStateUniversity.In1994shewasawardedtheAthensStateAlumni
AchievementAwardfromtheCollegeofEducation.SheearnedherAACertification
fromtheUniversityofAlabamaatBirminghamandherDoctoratefromVanderbiltUniͲ
versity.
SimsͲdeGraffenriedjoinedtheAlabamaAssociationofSchoolBoards(AASB)in
1985asassistantexecutivedirector.Shebecameexecutivedirectorin1988,breaking
groundasthefirstfemaleexecutivedirectorofamajorAlabamaeducationorganizaͲ
tionandthefirstfemaleschoolboardsassociationexecutivedirectorintheSoutheast.
WhileleadingAASB,SimsͲdeGraffenriedstrengthenedtheassociation’sfiͲ
nances,solidifiedmembership,increasedtheassociation’svisibilityintheadvocacy
andlegislativearena,anddevelopedanextensiveprofessionaldevelopmentprogram
forschoolboardmembers.
SheretiredasAASB’sexecutivedirectorin2007afterservingmorethan40
yearsinpubliceducation,including19yearsatAASB’shelmand19yearsasateacher
inMorganandLawrencecounties,asaguidancecounselorandascentralofficesuperͲ
visorinDecatur.
SimsͲdeGraffenriedservesasacommissioneroftheEducationCommissionof
theStates,ontheSouthernRegionalEducationalBoard,ontheSouthernGrowthPoliͲ
ciesBoardandisapastboardmemberoftheSoutheasternRegionalVisionforEducaͲ
tion.ThreeAlabamagovernors–GovernorsGuyHunt,FobJamesandBobRiley–have
appointedhertotaskforceschargedwithexaminingpublicschoolfunding,andsheled
thechargetoendnonͲessentialfundingwitheducationbudgetfunds.Shewasrecently
appointedtoserveontheAlabamaTrustFundBoard,whichoverseesbillionsofdollars
ofAlabama’soilandgasroyalties.
TheAlabamaEducationalLeadershipHallofFamewasestablishedin1982at
TroyUniversity.ItspurposeistorecognizeoutstandingleadersaffiliatedwiththeAlaͲ
bamaAssociationofSchoolBoards,theAlabamaDepartmentofEducation,andthe
CouncilforLeadersinAlabamaSchools.

2010 Livingston Concert Lecture Series well under way
AthensState’sLivingstonConcertLectureSeriesiswellunderwayforthisacademicyear.Audiencesoncampus
havealreadybeendelightedbyclassicalandfolkmusic,inspirationallectures,andknowledgeablehistorianstotheSeries.
Thespringsemesterwillalsohosteventsthataresuretodrawcrowds.
