Revitalization Open House
Visitors to the library have been enjoying
our new look for several weeks now, but it’s
time for our official open house celebration of
the Revitalization Project! The Perry Public Library
Board of Trustees and staff invite you to an Open
House on Monday, October 27, from 6:00 to 8:00
p.m., to recognize and thank all those who have
contributed their time, support, talents, or materials
to make this renovation possible. We will have a brief
presentation at 6:30 p.m., followed by tours to view
the changes we’ve made in our shelving and
organization, seating areas, and lighting. A special
thank-you goes to our patrons - for enduring the
inconveniences that go with a long-term project such
as this. Please come to the open house and take a
closer look at our revitalized library!

Dallas County Reads One Book Events
Reminder: The Dallas County
Reads One Book main events
with author William Kent
Krueger are Tuesday, October
7! The featured book is
Ordinary Grace, and even if you haven’t read the
book or participated in a book discussion, it’s not too
late to take advantage of this literary opportunity!
Meet popular, award-winning author William Kent
Krueger at a special reception at 5:30, at Hotel Pattee.
Tickets are available at all twelve Dallas County
libraries ($10 in advance, $15 at the door.) Come to
the free book talk with Mr. Krueger, at 7:00 p.m., at
the Perry High School Performing Arts Center. The
book talk is open to anyone interested and will make
for an exciting evening for all fans of Mr. Krueger’s
popular books. For more information about the Dallas
County Reads One Book program, you may contact
any of the participating libraries.
Please note: a second Perry area book discussion of
Ordinary Grace has been scheduled for Thursday,
October 2, at 7:00 p.m., in the Perry Library Large
Meeting Room. Everyone is welcome to participate in
this discussion. For more information, contact Library

Quarterly Classics Book Club
The October meeting of the Quarterly
Classics Book Club will be at 7:00 p.m.,
Tuesday, October 14, at the Carnegie
Library Museum. The selected title is Moll Flanders
by Daniel Defoe. This is our final discussion for the
year. Books are available at the library, including
audiobook format. All interested readers are invited
to participate. Discussion leader is Jill Cook. For more

Monthly Book Club
The October meeting of the Monthly Book
Club will be at 1:00 p.m., Tuesday, October
21, in the Clarion Room of the Security Bank
Building, 1102 Willis Avenue (across the street from
the library). The selected discussion title is I Am a
Man: Chief Standing Bear’s Journey for Justice by Joe
Starita. This story is a chronicle of the events that
occurred when Chief Standing Bear and his Ponca
2
Indian tribe were forcibly removed from their lands
and marched to Indian Territory in 1877. One third of
the tribe died along the way, including the Chief’s only
son. This is an account of the Chief’s six hundred mile
walk to return his son’s body to the Ponca burying
ground and his subsequent efforts to reclaim his lands
and rights.
The November book discussion for the
Monthly Book Club will be Tuesday,
November 18, at 1:00 p.m., in the Clarion
Room. The group will talk about non-fiction
title I Am Malala: The Girl Who Stood Up for
Education and was Shot by the Taliban by Malala
Yousafzai.
Anyone interested may join the Monthly Book Club at
any time. Books are available at the library. Discussion
leader is Library Director Mary Murphy.
Create Today Event: Christmas with Kathy Winter
The holidays are just
around the corner, and we
will have a card-making
event at the library just in
time to help you get
organized for your annual gift-giving. Kathy Winter,
Manager of Stampin’ Up Scrapbook and Design in Des
Moines, will be here on Saturday, October 4, from
1:00-3:30, to present her Christmas with Kathy
Winter workshop. With her guidance, we will each
make two holiday cards and a gift. There is an $8 fee
for the workshop, to cover your materials. You do not
need to bring any supplies with you. Pre-registration
is required. Call the library for more information.
Friends of the Library Book Sale
The Friends of the Library fall book sale will be held
Thursday through Friday, October 16-18, in the
library Large Meeting Room. The Friends always
have a great variety of reading materials for sale at
fantastic prices. Your support of our book sales
directly impacts library programming and services.

Iowa Ghosts and the Afterlife with Terry Fisk
Perry Library will host Terry Fisk, author, philosopher,
investigator, and lecturer for Unexplained Research
LLC, for a free program called Iowa Ghosts and the
Afterlife, on Thursday, October 16, at 7 p.m., at the
Carnegie Library Museum. Mr. Fisk will share photos
and case histories, as well as eye-witness accounts of
his ghost investigations, including those with Allison
Dubois, the real-life inspiration for the CBS hit series
Medium, and Chip Coffey of TV shows Paranormal
State and Psychic Kids. He will talk about haunted
locations in Iowa he has investigated, discuss his
confrontations with skeptic James Randi, and share
ghost lore. For more information about Terry Fisk and

Program: America's Charitable Role in Afghanistan
Everyone is invited to attend a free program at the
library, at 1:00 p.m., Saturday, November 1, in the
Perry Library Large Meeting Room. The program is
America’s Charitable Role in Afghanistan, and the
speaker is August Hohl. August Hohl is a Perry
resident who has served two deployments in
Afghanistan on the Army Command Staff in 2003,
2004, and 2006. He then worked several years as an
aviation contractor, and finally, was an independent
civilian employee of an Afghan owned cargo airline.
During his time overseas, he took photos in
Afghanistan and Iraq and wrote articles for more than
a dozen newspapers in the Midwest. He's worked
with several children’s relief programs, and during his
first military tour, received over five tons of donations
from family and friends in the United States, in efforts
to help educate and care for Afghani children.

Family Leaf Party: Monday, October 6
Come and celebrate the changing seasons at the Perry
Library Family Leaf Party, at 6:30 p.m., Monday,
October 6, in the Perry Library Large Meeting Room.
This event is for families and children in Kindergarten
through Second Grades, but all families are welcome.
We will enjoy games, crafts, and activities with an
autumn leaf theme at this free program. A snack will
be served. No registration is needed. For more

Join us for another free family event at Perry
Library, on Monday, October 20, at 6:30
p.m., in the Perry Library Large Meeting
Room. We will gather for a fun evening of stories,
games, activities, and snacks with a pumpkin theme.

Winter Reading Programs to Begin November 1
For the first time ever, Perry Library will offer
winter reading programs for children, teens, and
adults this year. The programs are similar in
structure to the summer reading programs that
ended in late July and will include small prizes as
reading incentives, as well as grand prize drawings,
all to encourage readers to keep reading during the
long winter months. The programs begin on
November 1 and run through February 2015. You
may register online or at the library beginning
November 1 for all age groups. For more

National Read 1000 Books Program
Perry Library encourages parents of young children
to consider following the 1000 Books Before
Kindergarten model, a national early literacy
program recommended for all children, to give
them a great start in school and life. To visit the

Safety Day
The library staff will join the other City of
Perry departments to participate in Safety
Day activities on Wednesday, October 29. At
this gathering, city personnel will review safe
practices of importance to public employees, learn
updated information on a number of current safety
issues, and watch and participate in training
demonstrations. Several presenters will be featured,
and lunch will be served. This event is also an
opportunity for individuals in the different
departments to become better acquainted.
Art on the Prairie: November 8-9
The library will again be an exhibit site for Art on the
Prairie this fall, with local artists’ work and Perry
School children’s art on display, Saturday and Sunday,
November 8 and 9. The library will also be a station
for Create Your Own Masterpiece family art activities,
from 12:00 to 1:00, both days. Create Your Own
Masterpiece projects include Crayon Melting Art on
Saturday, and Duct Tape Wallets on Sunday. An allday make-and-take activity, Toilet Paper Roll Art, will
be featured throughout the festival.
Visiting authors will also be stationed at the library,
mornings and afternoons of each day. Pick up a more
detailed schedule on the day of the events. Visitors
may view the art on display from 10:00 to 5:00 on
Saturday and from 10:00 to 4:00 on Sunday. Everyone
is welcome to attend any of the Art on the Prairie
events at the library. All are free!
