Chicago Nomads Ski Club Newsletter September/October , 2015 Volume 47, Issue 15 the Prez Sez...Bob - Grouch - Klawitter Well the 2015 Ski-A-Rama is over. There were a lot of faces I haven’t seen for a while. Always a pleasure to see familiar people at our meetings. Now you know where our trips are going so get the lead out and sign up. Don’t wait too long as the trips may fill up and you’ll be left at home wishing you had made reservations early. Our cheerful trip leaders are always happy to have you sign-up for some really good skiing and friendly associates. Remember – A club is only a good club if you participate and enjoy meeting others who like to do what you like to do. Come out and meet us. See you at the September picnic??? Social meeting??? General meeting??? Bob (Grouch) About 22 people rode the Cal Sag trail for an 18 mile ride. It was a beautiful day! Next ride: September 20, Old Plank Road Trail – Departs at 10:00 a.m. from downtown Frankfort, Breidert Green Community Park, White and Kansas Streets. Western ski trips and Europe trip from Cindy Vondrasek We had the “Ski-A-Rama” event to kick off the 2016 season for our trips. And I think it was a success! The season is starting off with a trip to Telluride and the cost will be $1680.00 per person. We have 3 openings for this trip and once it is filled there will be a waiting list. This trip is from Sunday, February 7th through Sunday, February 14th, 2016. It will include lodging at Bear Creek Lodge (3 bedroom/3 bath units) which is located in the Mountain Village with private lift access. Plus a five day lift pass, Round trip air on United Airlines, ground transfers and a pretrip party. Some of the amenities are: Maid service every other day and a washer/dryer in each unit Outdoor Heated Pool and Indoor/outdoor hot tubs Health Fitness Room with Steam Room, Sauna & Jacuzzi The next trip will be with CMSC for Chicago Week and it will be at Whistler Blackcomb in Canada. This trip will be from February 27th through March 5th, 2016. This trip will be $1999.00 per person. Seven nights lodging at the Ava Whistler hotel and Round trip airfare 5-day lift ticket and racing and 1 day of first-track breakfast Mountain lunch and a Pub Crawl and a dinner banquet with music and dancing Welcome reception and Apres-ski events plus other activities **For those of you that have lots of air miles…we are offering a reduced price so you can use them. If you are interested in staying longer (5th to 8th), for an extra $335.00 you can stay 3 nights at the Delta Vancouver Suites, with full Canadian breakfast daily plus your transfers from the hotel to the airport. Our last ski trip of the season is to Park City in Utah; from Saturday, March 5th through Saturday the 12th, 2016. The cost will be around $1485.00 per person. It will include 7 nights lodging at the Park Station (2 bedroom/2 bath units) condominiums, 3 day interchangeable lift pass for Park City and the Canyons, 2 day lift pass for Deer Valley, round trip air on Delta Airlines, ground transportation and pre-trip party. There are 18 spots still available. Go to deervalley.com parkcitymountain.com thecanyons.com We are headed to…Italy! This trip will be from Saturday, April 23rd through Friday, May 6 th, 2016. The trip will include Round trip airfare, all ground transportation and lodging, plus breakfast daily. There will be a full day tour in each city for the group. I don’t have the price finalized yet but it will cost about $2850.00 per person. We are flying into Venice and will be staying at the hotel Venezia Mestre (2 per room) for four nights (http://www.hotel-venezia.com/eng/index.asp). The hotel is situated in the heart of Venice Mestre, in an ideal location and is 15 minutes from their downtown area. The bus service shuttles back and forth from the hotel every 10 minutes on a 24/7 basis (every 30 minutes at night). Our next stop will be Florence. We will be staying four nights at the hotel Orto Dei Medici (2 per room). The hotel has been newly refurbished and is nestled right in the vibrant center of Florence but off the bustling beaten path. Hotel Orto De’ Medici is just a stone thrown away from the Cathedral, The Academy of Fine Arts with Michelangelo’s David, the Uffizi with its incomparable art collection, and the finest Italian restaurants. The Hotel Nizza is located in the historical centre of Rome next to Termini Station and all the connections. It is only a few steps from the major monuments like Colosseum, Imperial Forum, Spanish Steps, Piazza Navona, Trevi Fountain, Opera's Theatre and much more. It will go on sale at the Nomad General Meeting on Thursday, September 17 th and the final cost will be available at that time. A deposit of $750.00 is required at the time of signing up. Nomad Family Trip – Jan 14-19, 2016 Winter Park, Colorado - On Sale – Only 14 spots left!! If you are thinking about the Winter Park Family Trip, I encourage you to sign up soon. We’ve had 22 people sign up in August, leaving us ~14 openings. This trip is open to ALL Nomads (individuals, couples, and families) and includes: Flights to/from Denver, Colorado & bus to/from Winter Park. 2 Bedroom/2 Bath ski in/ski out Condos at the Zephyr Mountain Lodge (base of Winter Park). Free lodging for Children if they sleep on a sleeper sofa (and depending on the arrangements we may do the same for Teens). A few Condos set aside for Adults only (no Children or Teens). Four day Lift Ticket for all Adults, Teens, & Children included in the trip price. Parties/Events: Pre-Trip Pizza Party, Club Lunch or Dinner, Club Race, and more. All adults must be Nomad Members along with Children & Teens. Children & Teens must be related to Parents, Uncles, etc. on the Trip, (no children friends). Winter Park’s pricing for Children & Teens varies depending on bedding/sleeping arrangements, and is: $1,110 for Adults, $590 and up for Teens (ages 13-17), and $535 and up for Children (ages 5-12). On December 31 the Nomads depart forLutsen, MN in the morning, via Lamers coach buses. We will be staying at the Americinn. Lutsen is planning a New Year’s Eve Bash so upon arrival, (7-9 p.m.) we will be able to unpack and change into our dancing shoes and party hats for an exciting evening of music, dancing and fireworks. We plan on skiing on Friday and Saturday, and leaving Sunday morning. All breakfasts and one dinner are included. Lutsen is the Midwest’s largest and tallest, and has the largest snow-making in the Midwest. It also boasts the only 8 passenger Gondola in the Midwest. Lutsen continues to stand as the best, the biggest, and by far the most exciting and diverse skiing anywhere in Mid-America, giving you the experience of a Western ski resort, for a mere fraction of the price. The weekend of February 19-21, the Nomads are heading to the Boyne properties. Staying right at the base of Boyne Highlands, this trip includes, 2 breakfasts, 1 dinner, 2 days of skiing, 2 nights lodging, and access to the Tubing Park. We will shuttle bus over to Boyne Mountain. Nastar racing will be available. So, what’s included? Everyone had a great time and we are hoping we can do a few of them next year. Ski-a-Rama was a rousing success! The trips are selling and we are well on our way to a great ski season. Many thanks to those who helped set up and clean up. Special thanks to Nancy Clarke who helped set up, pass out the raffle gifts and cleaned up. And also to Alex Clausius, our raffle number caller. It is always nice when people are willing to go out of their way to help. With Ski-a-Rama behind us, we are looking forward to a Halloween and Christmas. Mark & Mary Anzilotti and I are planning a special activity for Halloween. Attendance at our Halloween parties has dropped over the years so we thought we would try something different. More details to follow! Right behind Halloween, we will be looking forward to Christmas and our annual Christmas party. We are planning something different for the Christmas party too. We had over 20 people attend the Mama Vesuvio’s, it was a great evening of bocci and beer. Before ski season kicks off, we will have a few more fun things to do this fall. An illustration of the first Labor Day parade, held on Sept. 5, 1882, in New York City. The holiday was organized by the Central Labor Union to exhibit "the strength and esprit de corps of the trade and labor organizations" of the community, and to host a festival for the workers and their families. Carnival weekend has always been a fun Club event. Clubs compete for bragging rights, who will bring home the Gold. This year it is not a Club only event - sign up is per individual directly through Shanty Creek. The games will be on Saturday as well as a group dinner. Costume Contest will be at dinner or on the slopes Sunday. We will keep you posted as the event draws near. Bus Information 45 people are required on the bus - or it may be a BUST. On January 1st, 2015 a fianal tally will be taken of how many people signed up for the bus. If we have 45 people signed up for the bus, final payment is due. If not, refunds will be given for the $65.00 bus fee as well as the $100 down payment to Shanty Creek. Trip Leaders, talk with your members and have them sign up early. This is a fun trip. $100 down payment and $65 for the bus. Due today through January 31, 2015. Some take it to another level with crazy costumes. Other games scheduled are; frozen fish toss, snow shovel racing and a seal slide - all part of the traditional wild and crazy weekend. If trips are canceled due to circumstances beyond the control of the Nomad Ski Club, payments less expenses caused by the cancellation will be refunded. Nomad Newsletter: If you have not received your newsletter, contact the Membership Director, Mary Anzzilotti or Andi Edington. Non-Refundable Deposits: Members reserve a seat on a trip by making a non-refundable trip deposit. Membership Dues: Payable after June 1, 2015. Current membership is required to be eligible for any ski trip. Sign up with the Membership Director at any meeting. Single: (new) $30) (renewal) $25, Married Couples: (new) $40 (renewal) $35. Non-refundable trip deposits are 10% of the trip price for Western & European trips and $35 for Midwest trips. Member Cancellations: Members who cancel their seat on a trip will forfeit the non-refundable trip deposit plus any fees or losses incurred on their behalf. If cancellation occurs after the predetermined closing date (the date the last payment is due on the trip), the full price of the trip may be charged. A cancellation form must be submitted to the Trip Leader within 30 days after the trip departs for refund consideration. Trip Waiting List: A completely full trip means all seats are filled on the bus scheduled for a Midwest trip or the minimum number of seats are filled on a Western or European trip. A member that cancels off a trip may be replaced on that trip from a waiting list, but the trip must be completely full. Canceling members that are replaced on a trip from a waiting list forfeit the non-refundable deposit plus any additional expenses incurred due to the cancellation. The excess will be refunded.
