Judy Sneyd is doing a wonderful job teaching the Monday, Wednesday, and Friday Body Conditioning classes. I have received many compliments about both her and the way she runs her classes. With the addition of Judy, Theresa has added several classes and we have moved some people off wait lists for classes like Chair Yoga and Arthritis. We want to offer a variety of classes that meet your varying needs. We have limits of how many and what kinds of classes any one person can sign up for so that, when new people come to the Center, they can register to join a class they need instead of being put on a wait list. A few people have said that even Body Conditioning is not strenuous enough to meet their needs. Because this is a Senior Center, the exercises are adapted specifically for people over age 55. If you feel you need more exercise than you can get at the Senior Center, you have several options: benefits your entire community while getting exercise. Their website is lcfpd.org. Once on the website, click on the Get Involved tab. Under volunteering, learn more about the options available to you. There are several. Both Bonner Farm and Independence Grove need Gardeners. Bonner Farm grows vegetables and Independence Grove grows a native plant garden. The duties include: planting, seed collection and processing, watering, weeding, general care and cleanups according to seasonal demands. If you are specifically interested in gardening, you may call Alicia Fullerton at 847-968-3390 to volunteer. The first step for all volunteer opportunities at the Forest Preserve is to fill out the Volunteer Interest Form which you can find on the website. If you need help accessing the website, filling out the form, or contacting the Forest Preserve, the staff at the senior center will gladly assist you. The Forest Preserve is also hosting a Volunteer Open House at Bonner Farm on April 12th from 1:00 to 2:30 PM which you can attend. Many people add walking to their daily routine. You I look forward to seeing many of you at the Grandparent’s can walk at Gurnee Mills mall in the mornings before Day celebration at Warren Township on Friday, June the stores open (or anytime during the day). You can take classes other places. You can join the YMCA or The Center Club, take extra classes at the PS. Congratulations to Theresa Gurnee Park District, or any health club in the area. Scottberg on the birth of her The Lake County Forest Preserve is in need of volun- grandson, Ezekiel John Holsworth teers. You can get outside, accomplish something that on March 31st. My name is Neilan Sankpal. I have lived in Gurnee my whole life. In 2012 I graduated from Warren Township High School. Since high school, I have been pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science at College of Lake County and University of Wisconsin. I have been working at the Warren Township Teen Center since fall of 2011. There, I have had the satisfaction of helping tutor and mentor many of Warren Townships’ youth. I love being active and trying new things. I have played most sports at one time or another. Currently I am on an adult softball team in Libertyville. Starting the spring of 2015 I will be working at the Senior Center. I look forward to my new roll and have heard nothing but good things about our senior citizens. 1 As you can see from the previous page, we are welcoming Neilan Sankpal to our senior department team. We are very happy to have him join us in serving all of you. Eric Dolence has an opportunity in Arizona and will be moving there in the next few months. The exact date of his departure has not been determined but will probably be sometime in July. Eric is hardworking, patient, and knowledgeable. He is generous with his time when assisting our clients. He has been an incredible asset here at the Senior Center and I am sure he will do well in all he does. We will miss him. Neilan will be splitting his time between the Senior Center and the Teen Center as he trains with Eric. Thank you to those of you who made suggestions for ways to partner with the Woodland schools. Also, a special thank you to Jill Ballock, Sherry Bowker, Susan Clare, Joan Jackson, Ann Kohler, Katy Owens, Katie Rinehart, and Mary Ann Urbaitis who par ticipated in Leader s ar e Reader s day at the Elementar y School. A very special thank you to Sara Hancock, Linda Hoeth, Millie Jordan, and Mary Ann Urbaitis who baked Cookies for the Teen Center Overnight Lock-In. Thank you also to our own Sherie Palmer who pitched in and generously added her own donations. There were plenty of delicious looking cookies and no nuts. The kids loved them and were very appreciative. Thank you very much! Jean and Theresa are making the final preparations for the Alaskan Cruise. We are very excited that 32 of our Warren Township seniors and their families are able to take advantage of this incredible opportunity. I hope it is great fun. We have the next extended trip planned to Finger Lakes, New York but we would love to hear your suggestions for future overnight trips. Let us know where you would like to go and how you would like to get there. We have cancelled the Spelling Bee for this year because there was only one brave soul, Barbara McNeill, who signed up to spell. This year she wins by default. Don’t worry. We will schedule the Fondue Fest in conjunction with a different event later in the year. Study up for next year. It’s more fun if we can get several spellers! It can be difficult to understand what people are saying, even without the addition of a hearing impairment. Captioned telephones provide word by word text to match the speech of the individual you are speaking to in order to help understanding and comprehension. Several companies produce a captioned telephone service for anyone who is hard of hearing. They provide a wide range of telephones to ensure the best fit for the individual. For individuals who are also vision impaired, they provide a phone with a larger screen to display larger text. Many of the machines require internet to be operated, but there are also phones that do not require internet, if you do not have it. Veterans and individuals who have a hearing impairment diagnosis can receive the captioned telephones for free. Veterans will be asked to provide their name, address, phone number and branch served. Non veterans who are hearing impaired must provide a “Third Party Certification of Eligibility”. This form must be filled out by a practicing physician to verify your hearing capability status. After ordering and scheduling an appointment, a representative from the captioned phone company will come to your home to install your new captioned telephone and give you a detailed tutorial on using it. Application forms and information are located in the main office of the Senior Center. NOTICE To all of you who have purchased the half-price taxi tickets from our office, we want to inform you of one change. Gurnee Flash Cab and Red and Black Cab companies are merging to form Gurnee Red & Black Flash Cab. The number to call to set up a ride which is found on the back of each ticket, is still correct. Also, if you call taxi drivers directly, they will still honor the tickets. In fact, you should see NO difference in your service. If you do or you have other problems with Gurnee Flash or any of the cab companies, please call Joanne Adams at 847-244-1101 ext. *503. 15 Our Elvis (John Van Thiel) had a wonderful voice and was a hit with the ladies.
