It is through our discipleship that we recognize our connection to God, our neighbor, and our deepest spiritual selves. WE, seek to live out the Gospel of Jesus Christ by: + Welcoming all with kindness, compassion and hospitality. + Nourishing the faith life of the community through prayer, fellowship and education. + Reverencing the dignity of each person by celebrating the beauty of life from conception to natural death. + Nurturing the gifts of all so that each person may live out his or her unique and personal call from God. + Caring for the needs of the less fortunate by empowering our parish community to answer that call. WE, do this in the name of Jesus Christ and the mandate: “See those Christians how they love one another!” SEVENTH SUNDAY OF EASTER MAY 17, 2015 Saturday 8:30 am 4:00 pm 5:15 pm Sunday 7:30 am 9:00 am 10:30 am 11:45 am 1:15 5:15 pm pm May 16 Mother’s Day Novena Johanna Atkins/Frank Galioto Rose-Marie Bailey Margaret Thompson Andrew Giuntini Stanley Zelko Phil DiRienzo May 17 Joseph/Carmela Petrucci Mother’s Day Novena Ed Carney Sr./Jim O’Neill Scott Dowd Catherine Hoey Ned Murphy Virgil Guanieri Andrew Giuntini Parishioners of OLV Charles Corkhill Monday St. John I 8:30 am 12 noon May 18 Mother’s Day Novena Rose Lindner Tuesday 8:30 am 12 noon May 19 William Tracy Spletzer/Sciattera Family Wednesday May 20 St. Bernardine of Siena 8:30 am Rita/Daniel J. Tom Dear Parishioners, Come and pray for Peace by praying the Rosary today, May 17th beginning at 2:00 pm. 2:00 pm—2:20 pm Joyful Mysteries For Peace in the Middle East 2:20 pm—2:40 pm Luminous Mysteries For Peace in Afghanistan, Iraq, Pakistan 2:40 pm—3:00 pm Sorrowful Mysteries For Persecuted Christians throughout the World 3:00 pm—3:30 pm Glorious Mysteries For Peace in Africa Bishop Murphy continues to encourage us to pray daily for Peace: “For us disciples of Jesus Christ, the Prince of Peace, there is no choice but to follow His example and become instruments of His peace. That demands first and foremost that we recognize that ultimately peace is a gift from God Who alone can guarantee true and lasting peace. The sure consequence of that truth is that we must enroll ourselves into the ranks of men and women who pray daily for peace. Prayer is God’s weapon of choice that is always at the ready so long as we exercise it. For this reason, I am issuing a call to peace as Bishop of this Diocese, an urgent invitation to one and all, without exception, to accept the responsibility and to commit ourselves to daily prayer for peace.” Memorial Day Mass For Peace The 8:30 am Mass next Monday, May 25th, on Memorial Day will be a Mass for Peace. As we remember the men & women who paid the ultimate price of giving their lives for the sake of freedom, we should also pray that their numbers never increase! Please join us on Memorial Day for Mass and then attend the Floral Park Memorial Day Parade. Pentecost Sunday Next Sunday, May 24th is Pentecost Sunday—the birth of the Church that began with the Descent of the Holy Spirit upon the Apostles. Five adult members of our parish community will receive the Sacrament of Confirmation at the 11:45 Mass next Sunday. Bishop Murphy grants all priests permission to confer the Sacrament of Confirmation on Pentecost Sunday. It is an honor and a privilege to be able to perform that Sacrament. Welcome to Seminarian Chris Loester! Chris Loester has just completed his first year of study at St. Joseph Seminary in Yonkers, NY. He is from Cure of Ars Parish in Merrick and is studying for the priesthood for the Diocese of Rockville Centre. Bishop Murphy and the Seminary faculty have assigned Chris to Our Lady of Victory Parish for his summer assignment. Chris will live in the rectory for the next two months, and will be involved in all parish activities. I’m sure you will welcome him and support him in his vocation! Blue Mass - Sunday, June 21st 9am Our Lady of Victory Parish and the Floral Park Knights of Columbus Council will sponsor a Blue Mass - a Mass in honor of law enforcement personnel, fire fighters, EMTs, rescue workers and all first responders. The Mass will be held on Father’s Day, June 21st at 9 am. We are hoping that parishioners who do this heroic work will join us in uniform for the Mass. More information will be available as the plans continue. Thank You I would like to express my appreciation to parishioners who celebrated my Ordination Anniversary with me last week. Your prayers, cards, and support are greatly appreciated by me. With God’s grace, I look forward to being able to serve Him and His Church for many more years! Praised be the name of Jesus Christ now and forever! Fr. Tom Our Lady of Victory School A Parish Elementary School Accredited by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools Phone: 516.352.4466; www.olvfp.org Dear OLV Parishioners, This past Monday, the entire OLV School Family assembled to mark a very special anniversary—30 years ago, on May 11th, 1985, Father Tom was ordained a priest! Our school marked this wonderful event by celebrating the best way we know how— by celebrating mass together. Father Tom spoke so eloquently of that day 30 years ago—the love and support of his family, and the important symbolism woven throughout the sacrament of Holy Orders. Father Tom spoke of reflecting on the last 30 years and his hopes that God gives him another 30 years to preach the Gospel. As the final blessing approached, Father Tom was presented with congratulatory cards from all the OLV students and a mother of pearl frame—pearl is the traditional gift for marking a 30th anniversary. The entire student body sang, “Lord I Lift Your Name on High,” during the recessional. It was a wonderful celebration and we thank God for calling Father Tom to serve and for sending him to OLV! “O Mary! We crown thee with blossoms today, Queen of the Angels, Queen of the May.” For many of us, these words will bring back memories of May Crownings we may have attended as school children ourselves! Here at OLV, we are fortunate to continue the tradition of honoring our Blessed Mother in the month of May. Our recent May Crowning was another powerful reminder of the important work we do! The second graders, our First Communion children, wore their communion clothes and brought flowers to Mary. Their song, A Mother Lined a Basket, was beautifully sung. Our 8th graders did a wonderful job leading the prayers. Starting on the altar of the church , a crown of flowers was placed on Mary’s head as the school children sang Gentle Woman. A prayerful procession of students ventured out into the beautiful day to crown Mary on the rectory lawn and then processed to the school yard to crown Our Lady there. Thank you teachers, parents, and students. A special thank you to Father Tom for his guidance at this beautiful prayer service. Sincerely, Peg Augello OLV School Principal Important Reminders: Tuesday 5/19, 7 pm— Dance Recital Wednesday 5/20, 7 pm — Band/Recorder Concert THE ROSARY ALTAR SOCIETY AND THE KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS … OUR LADY OF VICTORY FAITH FORMATION INVITE YOU TO PRAY THE ROSARY IN REPONSE TO THE BISHOP’S REQUEST FOR A “COMMITMENT TO PEACE” DIRECTORS: CHRISTINE FUCHS & MARY GAROFALO SUNDAY, MAY 17th 2 PM Come and stay for all twenty mysteries or just stop by and say a few decades. Father Tom will lead us in praying the Rosary together not only to honor the Blessed Mother during her month of May but also as part of our response to the Bishop’s request that we pray for peace. As we pray these mysteries of the Rosary together as a faith community, we are asking Mary to intercede for us with her Son to grant us peace not only in our world but also in our hearts. A SPECIAL MASS FOR ALL OF GOD’S CHILDREN WE WELCOME PEOPLE OF ALL AGES WITH SPECIAL NEEDS, DEVELOPMENTAL DELAYS OR OTHER PHYSICAL DISABILITIES TO WORSHIP TOGETHER. All family members and friends are invited! Signing provided if needed Mass will take place at OLV on Saturday, May 23, 2015 at 6:30 pm. This mass will be celebrated on the 4th Saturday of each month at 6:30 pm Please mark your calendars. PHONE: 516-352-0510 EMAIL: [email protected] Congratulations to the 150 second graders of our parish who received their First Holy Communion this April and May. Just as Baptism began your child’s initiation in the faith, First Eucharist continues this process as your child matures and grows in their understanding and relationship with God, your family and the world. We encourage you to continue as a family to receive this special “GIFT” every Sunday. A special thank you to the teachers and catechists who gave their time, talent and faith to the children of our parish this year. Their hard work and dedication is most appreciated; we could not do it without them. Job well done!
