Second Sunday of Lent
March 7, 2004
Second Sunday of Lent
As part of a fun exercise in vocabulary class, the freshmen used
common expressions in unique ways. With all due respect to
Batman and Emeril, one student used the expression "BAM!!"
to describe the sudden rush of understanding when information
finally sunk in. The parts clicked together like railroad cars
linking up, and the end result was like a loud noise that
grabbed his attention. Great definition - and a possible new
nickname!
The Apostles were with Jesus for some time, listening to His
words, seeing His miracles, watching Him with people. They
knew a lot about Him, but had yet to put it all together. They
kept their questions to themselves, but yet they were drawn to
Him. For Peter, John and James, the walk up the mountain
seemed routine, until the moment - the BAM! Moment when Jesus was transfigured before them. They experienced a
revelation seeing Jesus for who He was, confirmed by what
they heard and saw. Their vision changed their view of Him for
good.
Faith has those moments of insight when we gain a new understanding or view of God, Jesus, the Church, sacraments, or ourselves. They come unexpectedly in times of prayer, during a
hymn or the kind words of a friend. Faith has a way of surprising us, of drawing us closer to God as we seek Him. Look for
those moments, savor them and allow yourself to feel the
power of God transfiguring you into His image and likeness.
Faith will never look the same again!

The Diocese of Gary seeks to provide the best opportunities for our young people to receive a quality
Catholic education from pre-school through 12th
grade. A major study has been commissioned by the
Diocese to assist the Catholic schools and diocesan
leaders in planning for the future. If you receive a
card in the mail that directs you to take an online survey, please respond promptly. If you do not have a
computer with internet access, please call the Superintendent’s office at 219-769-9292 to receive either a
paper-pencil survey or arrange for a time to use a
computer at a Catholic school.
Your input is very important for us to plan for the
future of Catholic schools. Please help us provide the
best Catholic education possible by responding to the
survey.

ON THE LIGHTER SIDE
Bill and Bob, longtime golfing buddies, were involved in a
match-play contest with the score "all-square" at the 18th
tee.
Bill sliced his tee shot way left, and the ball finally
stopped on the cart path. Meanwhile, Bob smashed his
first shot straight down the middle.
"Oh well," said Bill, "I should get a free drop from there."
"Heck no," replied Bob, "We play the ball as it lies."
And so Bill did.
After dropping his opponent on the middle of the fairway,
Bill took the golf cart to his lie on the concrete path.
Sparks flew from the cart path, as Bill made a few
aggressive practice swings.
Finally, Bill hit the ball off the cart path, leaving a
miraculous shot only 3 feet from the pin.
As the two meet in the fairway, Bob commented, "That
was a great shot. What club did you use?"
"Your 6 iron," Bill replied with a smile on his face.

Priests and deacons have served the Diocese of Gary for a
number of years now. Others have served in the territory that
is now the Diocese of Gary. Please pray for those men who
have been called to God and whose anniversaries of death

TAKING UP THE CROSS FOR LENT -- DOUBT AND FEAR
In the early days of the Church in North America, there was
an attitude of "Father knows best." This stood to reason
because the parish priest was one of the more highly
educated people in the area. Today most Catholics are better
educated and more inclined to ask questions, challenge
arguments, and study opposing views. There are regular
debates about such complex issues as medical ethics,
nuclear deterrence, and the changing role of women.
Personal faith now goes beyond asking Father. Today the
mind and heart and conscience of a Christian is challenged
each and every day.
Doubt and questioning have become constant companions
on our journey through life. Doubt is a real blessing if it
nudges us out of our complacency and forces us to examine
our behavior and value system. Doubt can also be an easy
excuse when times are tough. For example, we hear
Catholics say "I used to be a Catholic, but I had this bad
experience with a priest and my faith was shattered" or "I left
the Church when all these new ideas made it no longer
Catholic."
Reactions like these are not crises of faith but crises of
confidence. To imagine that every member of the Church is
perfect or that the Church can forever remain unchanged is to
guarantee disillusionment. Human activity in the Church will
always challenge our faith. To have doubts, to question, is
not to betray faith but rather to bring about its growth and
development. True faith exists only in God. God's love and
belief in us is permanent and unchanging.
If we're honest, we must admit that fear underlies many of
our doubts. We fear life and death, sickness, suffering,
destitution, rejection, failure, and much more. The problem
with fear is that it quickly leads to self-concern, which causes
us to become self-willed and controlling. We try to manipulate
life on behalf of our own fearful interests. Because of fear we
tend to express our individuality in terms of an independence
that has no roots in God's love. This separateness gives birth
to doubt.
When fear seems strong, make a list of those things that
cause concern. Surrender them one by one, praying for the
grace to love God above all. Surrender yourself completely to
the Lord at the beginning of each day. Pray for the grace to
prefer God's will above anything else, as Jesus prayed during
the Agony in the Garden (see Mark 14:36).

Mardi Gras was a HUGE
success, with profits
anticipated at over $41,000!!!
On behalf of the Home and School Association, we are
grateful to those who attended Mardi Gras and
contributed to our school. Without your support, and
the support of those who participated in Fall Family
Fun Night and the 5K Run for Tomorrow, the cost of
educating our children at St. Thomas More School
would be much greater than it is today.
As you can see on this and the following page, it takes many people to make this event successful. We would like to
thank those individuals who help by making donations or by working to make this a great event!
A special thank you goes to those who:
♦Purchased ads and generously donated to our event
♦Fluffed baskets, helped with set-up and stayed late to clean-up.
♦The teachers and students for their wonderful classroom baskets and for supporting the student raffle.
♦Fr. Mike, Mrs. Boyle, Sister Marilyn, school and parish administrative staff, and maintenance for all of their hard work.
♦STMS Class of 2004 for their creative Mardi Gras artwork.
♦Jacky Surma and the STMS Art Club for the awesome furniture creations!!
Mardi Gras would not have been possible without the dedication and hard work of our planning committee. Special thanks
to Niall McShane, Dave Bukowski, Betsy Mellon, Tom Fagan, Cathy Hauer and Jim Foster for going the extra mile!!
