Special Waste
Because roadside litter is such a problem, a $10 fee
is charged to any vehicle that has an “unrestrained
load.” Fees double for each repeated occurrence. An
unrestrained load is defined as any load that can drop,
sift, leak, blow or otherwise escape from the transporting
vehicle. Trash in closed plastic bags that are below the
sidewalls is acceptable. If bags are above the sidewalls,
they must be restrained with a rope, net or tarp. Tailgates
must be kept closed.

Recycling Information
How to Recycle
Can I recycle at work?
Yes! Recycling is available to all businesses in Marion
County. In fact, Marion County even has a program
just to help businesses and non-profits reduce
waste, reuse more, and recycle everything they can.
The business assistance program, called EarthWISE,
is absolutely free.
Visit our online Recycle Guide to make it easy to find
where to donate, recycle or dispose of materials. Some
features include:
•
A database of over 300 materials
•
Over 200 local businesses- Prioritized results
with earth-friendly options appearing first.
EarthWISE staff has tips and resources to help you
start, or improve, your waste reduction efforts at
your job. They can also help you find ways to save
resources and money by reducing waste, saving
water, and conserving energy. There is even an
EarthWISE certification your organization can achieve
for being good stewards of our incredibly beautiful
Willamette Valley.

Block Styrofoam (the kind that snaps when bent) is
accepted at the Fresh Start Market (3020 NE Center
St., Salem). Styrofoam cups, take-out containers,
packing peanuts, and other types of foam are not
accepted in this program. Most mailing stores will
accept clean, dry packing peanuts for free.

Household Hazardous Waste
Many household products contain hazardous
chemicals which can end up in surface and
groundwater when they are improperly disposed.
The Household Hazardous Waste Collection Facility
accepts hazardous waste from residents for free. The
facility is located at the Salem-Keizer Recycling &
Transfer Station and is open every Thursday and the
first and third Saturday of the month from 8:00 a.m.
- 3:30 p.m. Small businesses must pay a fee and
call (800) 444-4244 to schedule an appointment. For
more information, visit mcrecycles.net
Tires and Appliances
These materials are recyclable but they require
special handling. Tires must be ground up and have
the steel and fiberglass removed. Appliances need
to have harmful substances removed such as Freon
gas. The fee covers processing and transporting
these items to market.
These glass items melt at a different temperature
than bottles and jars and cannot be recycled with
them. If these glass items get included with the
bottles and jars, they will form flaws in the new
bottles and jars that are made. Until a market is
found for other kinds of glass, they can’t be recycled.
Reuse is Even
Better than Recycling!
Before you get rid of something,
ask yourself if anything that you are
trying to recycle or dispose of could
be used by someone else! If so,
there are several second hand stores
throughout Marion County that may
be able to accept your old stuff. If you
have access to the internet, you can
add it to Freecycle’s website (www.
freecycle.org), which lists free things
being offered by people right here
in Marion County. There is a similar
website (www.nwmaterialsmart.
org) to help businesses get rid
of unwanted equipment and find
resources they need. You can also
bring many items to the St. Vincent
de Paul trailer at the Salem-Keizer
Recycling & Transfer Station. For a list
of what items they accept, visit our
website or give us a call!
