There were race-proven GT Ferraris and Challenge Ferraris aplenty to be seen.
The new road course at Palm Beach International Raceway (formerly
Moroso) proved again that it will be a successful venue, as over 100 track
Ferraris from the Cavallino Classic spent four days there, with everyone enjoying a circuit designed to get the most out of both the old and new Ferraris.
Two private test days on Tuesday and Wednesday were fully subscribed, giving the drivers many uninterrupted hours under the watchful eye of
legendary long distance racer Bill Adam. It also allowed the crews time to set
up camp for the four days ahead, and it’s a sight to watch all the glorious
machinery being unloaded off the numerous (and concours condition) rigs.
Thursday and Friday were the customary open track portions, with
owners attacking the track in two classes – GT with a modest speed limit and
Sport with unlimited speed – alternating each half hour during the days.
Both on track and in the paddock, the Ferraris were an eclectic mix of
old and new, but we must note that the more modern models, mainly the
Challenge cars, are now the track cars of choice – race cars in all but name.
The drivers had an agreeable time, and we thank everyone at the new
Palm Beach International Raceway for their hospitality to us, and for making
the track ready for the Cavallino Classic and its participants and guests.

Peter Giddings in his Maserati 250 F won the coveted Drum Brake Race.
Thursday and Friday at PBIR saw action from the Shell Ferrari Maserati
Historic Challenge, sponsored by Ferrari and sanctioned by Grand-Am. The
Drum and Disc Brake classes were well subscribed with owner/drivers and
their legendary mounts. The Drum Brake Race was won by perennial favorite
Peter Giddings in his Maserati 250 F, followed by Carlos Monteverde in the
famous 750 Monza “Ice Racer.” In the Disc Brake Race, previous winner Todd
Morici in his 512 BBLM came home in first, ahead of Mike Shein in his F40 LM.
Congratulations to all and we thank the new President and CEO of
Ferrari NA, Marco Mattiacci, for bringing the Historic Challenge to the Classic.

Kim and Dana Watkins flank Jet Aviation CEO Gary Dempsey with the Award.
“La Bella Macchina” means “the beautiful machine” and this has
become a fitting description for both the Ferraris on display and the many fine
aircraft from top line manufacturers at the Cavallino Classic/Jet Aviation Jet
Reception, this year celebrating its 10th Anniversary as a Classic event. Over
100 Ferraris were on the tarmac at the main hangar, surrounded by a dozen
important aircraft. The theme was “getting back to business” to show that private and corporate aircraft have a valid contribution to make to society.
500 Classic participants were present, along with 1,000 guests of Jet
Aviation and the aircraft sponsors. As part of the evening’s activities, Jet
Aviation made a generous donation to Best Buddies of Palm Beach County.
One of the highlights of the evening was the traditional voting for the
Jet Aviation Cup, which is a Peoples’ Choice Award for the finest Ferrari at “La
Bella Macchina.“ The undisputed winner was the 250 GT SWB of Kim and
Dana Watkins (which also won several years ago before its restoration!).
We thank everyone at Jet Aviation, and especially its President and
CEO Gary Dempsey, who made it a great 10th Anniversary for all the Classic
participants and guests. Also deserving recognition are the select aircraft sponsors who brought such excellent examples of their product for all to experience.

Friday night’s Cavallino Classic/Showboats International Yacht Hop was
held in a newly expanded area of the handsome Rybovich Superyacht Marina,
with over 20 large boats backed in for viewing and boarding. Right alongside
on the docks were over 100 Ferraris, with a further backdrop of over 30 large
and beautiful boats at Rybovich for dockage, storage and refit.
Classic participants, along with the boat sponsors’ guests, found plentiful food and drink on the docks and on the boats, where many parties ensued.
A moment of honor was the awarding of the Historic Challenge Awards
to all the drivers from the day’s races. On the back deck of the Sanlorenzo
yacht Retro Blue, the drivers came forward to receive class and overall prizes
from Historic Challenge administrators David Seibert and Maria McNeil.
One of the highlights of this evening too was the customary voting for
the ShowBoats Cup, the Peoples’ Choice Award for the finest Ferrari at the
Yacht Hop. The unquestioned winner was the 250 GT California of Todd Morici.
The Florida sunset was spectacular as usual and the night was breezy,
making for a fine event. We thank Showboats International magazine,
Rybovich Superyacht Marina and the boat owners and manufacturers for
expanding on one of the Cavallino Classic’s most popular and festive occasions.

For those owners not interested in taking their Ferraris on track, the
Cavallino Classic and its partners host the Tour of Palm Beach on the Thursday
afternoon. It’s a relaxing drive through the lush streets and avenues of Palm
Beach and along the windswept coastal roads of the Atlantic Ocean. Up to 60
vintage, classic and modern street Ferraris took part and enjoyed a fine afternoon of Florida sun in wintertime. The Tour is now in its thirteenth year.
The Ferraris left from The Breakers after the now famous lunch on the
front lawn, and using a guide book they made stops at Ocean Ridge Park,
Mar-a-Lago and the Chesterfield Hotel, with their destination being Jet Aviation
for the “La Bella Macchina” Jet Reception that evening. Each stop was hosted
by Classic staff to hand out goodies and stamp the guidebook.
The Tour is meant for those who enjoy driving their Ferraris on fine
roads in spectacular surroundings. Ferraris are meant for grand touring, and
this Tour has come to define Grand Touring in the ultimate style.
We thank the staffs of The Breakers Hotel, Ocean Ridge, Mar-a-Lago,
and the Chesterfield Hotel for their generous hospitality to the Classic owners
and guests who partook of this Tour of Palm Beach. There are few more
romantic things to do with your Ferrari and your significant other.

The Cavallino Classic over the years has been honored with many
unveilings of new Ferraris, right after they have been shown at a major USA
Auto Show. Some have been at the Concorso d’Eleganza at The Breakers while
others have been at the “La Bella Macchina” at Jet Aviation.
This year we were honored with something truly unique, the unveiling
of the second “Special Projects” car from Ferrari, the P540 SF Aperta. It was
commissioned by collector Edward Walson who wanted a Ferrari all his own,
and based on a Ferrari he saw in a film from the 1960s. Working with Ferrari
and Pininfarina, Mr. Walson took a 599 GTB Fiorano and made his dream of a

distinctive open Ferrari become a reality. A dark red covering greeted the
morning attendees of the Concorso d’Eleganza, but at 11:00 am, the moment
was at hand and Ferrari SpA CEO Amedeo Felisa was there to help with the
unveiling, along with the new President and CEO of Ferrari North America
Marco Mattiacci. Ing. Felisa spoke about the new “Special Projects” department
at Ferrari and then Mr. Walson spoke at length about his experience with
Ferrari and Pininfarina and the realization of his personal vision.
We wish to thank Ferrari SpA and Ferrari NA for this special opportunity for the Classic to host this new venture in front of Ferrari’s best customers.

The Gran Turismo Ferrari Cup for Best of Show GT Ferrari went to the 1951 212 Export Vignale Berlinetta of Brian and Kimberly Ross.
The 12-Cylinder Award went to the 1969 365 GTB/4 Daytona from Jimmy Page.
Daniel Stanton presented the latest Zagato creation, the innovative 575 GTZ.
Best Comp. Ferrari was the 250 GT LWB Zagato Coupe from Lee Herrington.
On the long front lawn of The Breakers on Saturday was held the
showpiece of the Palm Beach Cavallino Classic, the Concorso d’Eleganza. 140
impeccable Ferraris were displayed amidst beautiful surroundings to an enthusiastic and appreciative crowd. Many of the Ferraris were there for serious
judging, using the accepted guidelines of the IAC/PFA. The Judges were leading experts from around the world and they spent the morning assessing a
very diverse field. The choices for Major Awards were not arrived at easily.
The displays of rare older Ferraris were excellent, with collections ranging from thirty two 250 GTs, of which seven were the featured 2+2s, nine 275
GTBs and GTB/4s and ten Daytonas, among others. In the very early group
were a rare 1951 212 Export Vignale, a 1952 225 Sport, a 1953 342 America
Coupe, a 1953 342 America Cabriolet, the 1955 750 Monza “Ice Racer,” a
1955 250 Europa GT and a 1956 250 GT Berlinetta.
There were many elegant speciales this year, including the P540 SF
Aperta and 575 GTZ Zagato, paired up with an old classic, the 1954 375 MM
Scaglietti. There were other special bodied Ferraris as well, including a 250 GT
TDF Zagato, a 250 GT Speciale, the prototype 250 GT SWB, a 250 LM and a
275 GTB/C Speciale, the prototype Daytona and a pre-production 250 GT 2+2.

430 ALMS and Challenge racers of recent vintage, plus a genuine 575 GTC.
Ferrari also had its Classiche display, along with a display of its newer models.
The range and depth of the Ferraris present represented the entire history of
the marque and we must thank all the owners (and restorers) who preserve
these cars and bring them out for everyone to appreciate and enjoy.
The evening banquet at The Breakers hosted the presentation of the
Class and Major Awards, along with The Cavallino Cups for the two Bests in
