Message from Whiz-Quiz 2016 - Chief coordinator
Message from Chairman
In the success of the youth, lies the success of our Nation. I strongly
believe that the hope of our Nation rests in the education of our
youth. Sahyadri Whiz-Quiz was an initiative to sculpt their
character and intelligence to bring out the champions in them. We
aspire to give more attention to the needs and constraints of the
youth and empower them to realize their aspirations.
Dr. Manjunath Bhandary
It’s an initiative to teach them how to think rather then what to
think. I am proud of the success of the last edition and eagerly
looking forward for this year’s edition, where the youth will not just
tell the world about their dreams but show them. The future of the
youth is as bright as their faith, which I believe is stronger than their
fear. I wish the Whiz-Quiz team all the best.
Message from MBA Director
Great jobs are not always about innovations. Some times it is
only about dedication. Sahyadri Whiz-Quiz 2016 was a great
example of that. It spoke volumes about the kind of and
Institution that we are efficient, organized and resultoriented. This was a glorious opportunity given to our beloved
students who grabbed it and proved that they deserved it.
My team was a prologue of success, taking on new challenges
and surpassing the benchmark set on the previous edition.
I congratulate each and every member of my team of faculty
and students for getting the job done in a wonderful manner.
Well done.

- Chief coordinator
Knowledge comes from learning and wisdom comes from living.
With this idea, we launched Sahyadri Whiz Quiz. It’s is an initiative
where the youth sometimes win and sometimes learn. Our aim is
to separate knowledge from the illusion of knowledge. As a chief
coordinator of this event, I am keen to enthuse the youth to do
what others won’t, so that tomorrow they can do which others
can’t. It’s a colosseum for the youth to stop fearing what could go
wrong and start having faith in what could go right. Encouraged by
the success we are launching Sahyadri Whiz-Quiz 2017 which will I
am sure exceed the standards set in the previous edition. I take
pride in my team for how far they have come and have faith in how
far they can go. I wish you all the best in your future endeavours.
Good luck.

Panel Discussion on
“Union Budget 2016-17”
Panel Discussion on “Union Budget 2016-17” was organized by Sahyadri College of Engineering & Management in collaboration with
Kanara Chamber of Commerce & Industry, Mangalore. Prof. G.V Joshi, Professor of Economics, Justice K.S Hegde Institute of
Management, Mr. Rammohan Pai Maroor, President, Kanara Chamber of Commerce & Industry, Mangalore, Mr. Mahesh Chandra
Alva, Regional Training Manager-South, HDFC Bank Ltd Bangalore, Mr. Agnish A, Team Leader, Oracle Financial Services, Bangalore &
Mr. Kiran Vasanth, Chartered Accountant, Mangalore were the resource persons.
Mr. Mahesh Chandra Alva In his Overview of Union Budget 2016-17 acclaimed that this is one of the best budgets so far as
the Government has looked at the macro angle and we can foresee Indian economy growing at a faster pace. This
budget will give impetus for a better growth. He emphasized that the current budget has been rolled out
keeping in mind the scenario of Global turmoil and political compulsions. From the point of corporate
sector, it was expected to have increment in the Capital Gain Tax, however it remained the same.
Government is looking at improving Option Markets regarding how we should enter into stock market
and generate revenue. With regards to Agriculture sector the Government is looking at bringing
unproductive lands to productive section. Investment has been diverted towards Irrigation, Modern
fertilizer outlets. With this focus on Agriculture, employment will rise with increase in revenue for the
nation.
Mr. Agnish A: In his speech regarding stock market mentioned that this budget is a 'Robin Hood Budget'
- Pulling money from the luxury class and investing in Rural class which intern would help the
helpless to come up in the society. This budget shall attract FDI's for agriculture sector. He
emphasized on the encouragement received by the Government on start ups, however start ups
should invest in the right sector as Government will not encourage each and every start up. There
has not been any change to the tax slab; however the tax rebate has been hiked from Rs. 2000 to Rs.
5000. He highlighted that Mr. Jaitley has beautifully scaled the budget by forcing the people think if
they should invest on a luxurious car. He also mentioned of HRA being increased from Rs. 24 thousand to
Rs. 60 thousand. Individuals earning dividends of Rs. 10 lakhs should now pay 10% of that.
Mr. Kiran Vasanth Talking on Public Revenue, he emphasized that the scenario is not good globally
and most of the countries are losing on this front, however India is comparatively still better. He
highlighted certain cosmetic changes made in the Tax Structure and acclaimed that the reforms
brought about in the budget that shall inculcate the saving habits amongst the youngsters. He was
off the opinion that Tax disputes will be settled more quickly and corrupt practices will be reduced.
India will shine only when the corruption and unethical behaviors are stopped completely. He
concluded saying - 'This budget has injected us with the right spirit'. He highlighted that less than 4% of
Indian population pays tax. Donations made to ‘Swachch Bharath’ have 100% redemption. Advances
made to real estate should be in cheque only. Rich are taxed more in this budget. Tobacco has now become injurious to health
and wealth.
Prof. G.V Joshi moderated the panel discussion and during the course of the question and answer session
