round 33.13 per cent voter turnout has been recorded till 12 pm in 49 Assembly constituencies of
Bihar in a peaceful atmosphere. The highest turnout
has been recorded for Jamui district at 40.77 per cent
and the least has been for Khagaria at 30.55 per cent.
The polling for the first phase started slow, with a turnout of 7.2 per cent till 8 am, 12.82 per cnet till 9am and
20.15 per cent till 10am, but picked up in the following
hours, with 27.34 per cent till 11 am.
Voter turnout would be a crucial part as Bihar has
seen a low turnout in the past. In the general election
last year, Bihar saw a turnout of only 56.26 per cent as
opposed to the national average of 66.44 per cent. In the
2010 Assembly elections, the State recorded a turnout
of 52.67 per cent and in the Assembly election previous
to that in 2005, the turnout was merely 45.85 per cent.
In Mumbai, Shiv Sena activists today smeared black
paint on ORF chairman Sudheendra Kulkarni’s face
for refusing to cancel former Pakistan foreign minister
Khurshid Mahmud Kasuri’s book launch.
‘When I got out of my home this morning, a group
of Shiv Sainiks stopped my car. When I came out,
they smeared me with black paint. They abused me,’
Kulkarni alleged and said that his Observer Research
Foundation (ORF), a foreign policy think-tank, will go
ahead with the planned book launch by Kasuri later
today despite the attack.

LAASYA SHEKHAR
Chennai, Oct 12:
Students straining at the rules of
educational institutions have been
making news for the past few weeks.
Last evening, hostel inmates of
Sairam Engineering College even
went on the rampage at the institution where there had been trouble
with the rules.
At the school level, the tussle
between a parent and the management of a prominent Anglo-Indian
School in the city has intensified
with the latter accusing the former
of allegedly defaming the institution.
It can be noted that the school imposed a fine of Rs 500 on a student
‘I once updated a picture from
my profile which also had my daughter.
She was apparently grilled by teachers
for having her picture on Facebook’
of class 2 as he had applied mehendi
during the holidays and there were
traces on his hand when school
reopened.
The news reached the media of
how the parent insisted on a receipt
and letter for the reason for levying the fine. He maintained that the
mehendi had almost faded when his
son returned to school after holidays.
In a tug of war between the parent D
Jayakumar and the school management, it was learnt that an apology
letter was also submitted by the parent for his ‘rude behaviour’.
Sources from Doveton Girls’ and
Boys’ Higher Secondary School
said, ‘as per the rules stated in the
institution’s hand book, any religious
symbol, including applying mehendi
or decorating themselves, is strictly
prohibited. We will be taking legal
steps if he continues to defame the
institution further.’
It is not an exaggeration to say that
many educational institutions follow
bizarre rules, putting the students in
a state of fright. Seeking anonymity,
a parent reveals the host of rules
followed by a school at Selaiyur. He
said their 14-year-old daughter is
so scared to be a part of Facebook
pictures. ‘I once updated a picture
from my profile which also had my
daughter. She was apparently grilled
by many teachers for having her pic-
ture on Facebook,’ he said.
Retired Professor in Sociology R
Sudharsan said these rules cannot
forbid students from seeking what
they wish. ‘Students find other ways
to socialise with the opposite sex if
institutions bar them from interaction. Most of them create a fake
Facebook account and carry on their
deeds,’ he added.
However, he is happy over the
change in the mindset of the parents.
‘Earlier, parents were in favour of
the rules as they felt that their ward
would not go astray in such schools.
But the fact is that there is a change
in trend and they are slowing questioning the silly rules,’ he pointed out.

The innovative sprinkler.
S VISHNU SHARMAA
Chennai, Oct 12:
The Tamilnadu Veterinary and Animal
Sciences University (TANUVAS) is
leading in cutting-edge technology while
handling many issues through its research farm, and bringing out innovative
products including on the fodder front.
This reporter headed to the university’s research unit at Madhavaram
recently to know more. TANUVAS’
research farm’s professor and head,
P Tensingh Gnanaraj, said, ‘I saw a
multisprinkler when I visited Israel
in 2012.’ He said, systems there
are designed to irrigate a minimum
of 10,000 acres. ‘On coming here,
I had to re-design the sprinkler to
suit Indian farms which are smaller
in size. That’s what led to this innovation.’
The sprinkler can be connected to
a water source through a pipe and
water is sprayed. It has 16 sprinklers
which can sprinkle 208 litres of water in a minute. Each sprinkler can
cover an area of four feet. It takes
approximately 30 minutes to irrigate
one acre.
In another handy innovation, he
said ‘when it comes to protecting
piglets from succumbing to pressure
exerted by mother on them, we have
come out with yet another innovation
called ‘farrowing crate’.
The crate comes with a dimension
of 6x7 ft. There is a tendency for
the mother pig to exert pressure by
rolling which can prove fatal for the
piglets. ‘Ten days before delivery,
we place the pigs in the crate: rods
here never allow the mother pig to
completely relax on the floor to exert
pressure,’ he explained.
It creates creep area for 10 to 12
inches from the floor and about 10
to 12 inches from the wall, taking
advantage of which the piglets can
escape, said Gnanaraj. This native
version is available at Rs 3,500 while
an imported crate can cost about Rs
26,000, he said.
Speaking about the hydrophonic
fodder unit, Gnanaraj said they set
up this machine under the National
Agriculture Development Programme

(NADP) project which can produce one tonne fodder per day.
The machine is 16-feet wide and

eight tonnes.

insulinoma
NT Bureau
Chennai, Oct 12:
A 23-year-old youth from West
Bengal suffering from rare case of
insulinoma got a new lease of life,
thanks to medical help from a citybased hospital.
The medical help was provided
free of cost under the corporate social responsibility programme of the
hospital.
At a press meet here, Medway
Medical Centre CEO Dr T Palaniappan said Manas Manna, a welder
from Haldia district in West Bengal
came to them with complaints of repeated giddiness and fainting attacks
for nearly one year.
He said the patient was lethargic
and was not able to do his routine
work. He used to faint without any
warning signs. Though he visited
many hospitals in West Bengal and
Chennai, his problem continued.
When he came to us we did extensive
tests and found out it was rare case
of insulinoma.
Insulinoma is an insulin secreting
tumour present in the pancreas, the
incidence is one per million people.
In case of insulinoma, insulin is constantly secreted contrary to normal
situations wherein it is secreted after
a meal. Patient develops symptoms
of low sugar owing to constant secretion, said Palaniappan.
So the patient gets a habit of
constant eating every two hours to
prevent hypoglycaemia. Insulinoma
patients will have symptoms like
sweating, hunger, tremors, fainting.
A team of five doctors performed extensive surgery for seven hours and
removed the tumor. ‘While a surgery
of this sort costs about Rs 7 lakh, we
did this for free,’ Palaniappan said.

WHAT NEWS TODAY PRINTS IS NEWS THAT COUNTS
Women on top
W
omen are about to break the glass ceiling in the Indian Air
Force’s most glamorous and demanding stream of fighter pilots. It should be a matter of time before India catches up with Pakistan
which has already inducted four women as fighter pilots. This was not
an off-the-cuff decision but followed several Defence Ministry studies
recommending their induction. One study concluded that as women are
not medically inferior to men, they could fly fighter aircraft, drive tanks
or sail in warships. About 50 women pilots in the IAF fly transport
planes, some of them giant enough to give the Jumbos a complex, as
well as helicopters on supply and rescue mission. But they are excluded
from missions that involve helicopters taking up combat roles.
The decision also implies that these women will be permanent commission officers. This means in future they could be aspirants for top
posts in the IAF. But the more difficult decision of inducting women in
combat roles in the Army is pending probably due to myths regarding
rape and torture of female prisoners as well as issues of pregnancy. The
green signal for women fighter pilots has been easier because the fighting is from the confines of a cockpit where issues regarding the hyper
masculine military subculture are absent.
The counter-argument is that women fighter pilots might baulk at
bombing targets out of their so-called abhorrence for blood. This misses
the point that the selection of fighter pilots is among the most demanding. Aspirants are minutely screened for physical fitness and mental
strength before being accepted for initial training. As is the case with
men fighter pilots, women not displaying the required aptitude could be
transferred to the transport and helicopter streams. As far as their induction in front-line combat roles is concerned, it will be more prudent to
wait for studies being conducted in this regard by other countries and
then take a call. For now, women can exult that the 1992 opening up of
armed service for women is now reaching its logical conclusion.

Vishal overcome!
hile the rest of India is discussing the Bihar elections, we in
Tamil Nadu, who always have our
priorities right, are debating the allimportant polls to the Nadigar Sangam (Nadigar Sangam in English),
which is widely accepted as the apex
body of actors due to two facts 1) its
words are taken as final in industryrelated issues. 2) There is no other
actors’ union.
The run up to the Nadigar Sangam
polls has been quite eventful with the
two camps, one led by the incumbent president Sarath Kumar and the
other by the challenger Vishal, going at each other with a vehemence
that would make Indo-Pak cricket
clashes in Sharjah seem as some
kind of artificially staged fights. No,

right. Never mind, the thing is the

Here are the various questions on
the Nadigar Sangam elections that
are being asked everywhere and the
answers to them that you will see
nowhere.
Can you give a brief backgrounder
on how and why the Nadigar Sangam
was started?
Nadigar Sangam had its humble
beginnings in black and white photographs, when the leading actors

Vishal wants elections. Whereas
Sarath is all for elections where there
won’t be any election as such. Or at
least that is what it seems, as Sarath
camp keeps telling the Vishal group,
‘why can’t we just sit and talk and
sort out the issues? Why have these
polls and spoil the democracy in the
industry?’ Seems most reasonable.
Vishal and team, on the other hand,
is contesting the elections on the
powerful plank of change, which we
all know is an euphemism for, well, we
don’t know because we have never
seen change anywhere anytime. But
Sarath and co can still win on sympathy factor.

Whom are Kamal and Rajni supporting?
Kamal is seen to be backing the
Vishal group as he has proposed

which includes Kamal as well, will
say anything for certain. Rajni’s
position is like the story of Lingaa:
We have to basically keep guessing.
What is the first task facing the new

Whoever wins, he has the responsibility to get down to work immediately and find out who won the Bihar

BAGHDAD:
Eight senior figures from Islamic
State were killed in an airstrike while
meeting in a town in western Iraq, but
the group’s reclusive leader Abu Bakr
was carrying Baghdadi to attend it. It
said Baghdadi had been driven away
from the convoy in an unknown condition. The Iraqi military’s announcement was the latest unconfirmed report of the possible death or injury of

Turkey mourns
deadliest attack
ANKARA:
Thousands of mourners filled the
streets of Ankara and vented their
anger at President Recep Tayyip
Erdogan after 97 people were killed
in the country’s worst-ever terror attack, as the government raced to
identify the two male suicide bombers it blamed for the bloodshed.
Flags flew at half-mast across Turkey on the first of three days of national mourning declared by Prime
Minister Ahmet Davutoglu, as questions grew over who could have
ordered Saturday’s bombings on a
peace rally in Ankara. Turkey’s proKurdish Peoples’ Democratic Party
(HDP), one of the groups that had
organised the rally, said it believes
the death toll now stands at 128.
The attacks have raised tensions
in Turkey just three weeks before
snap elections are due on 1 November and as the military wages
an offensive against Islamic State
(IS) jihadists and Kurdish militants.
With the country on edge, Erdogan
issued a statement condemning the
‘heinous’ bombings and cancelled
a planned visit to Turkmenistan but
he has yet to speak in public since
the attack that shocked the nation.
Belarus President wins fifth
term with landslide win
MINSK:
Alexander Lukashenko has won
a fifth term as president of Belarus
with a landslide victory that could
see an easing of relations with the
west and raise questions about his
ties to Vladimir Putin’s Russia.
Lukashenko’s re-election five years
ago led to mass protests and the
imprisonment of leading opposition
figures, but support for his 20-yearold regime has risen since he cast
himself as a guarantor of stability
in the face of economic crisis and
a pro-Russia separatist conflict in
neighbouring Ukraine.

record and clampdown on political
dissent. It has imposed economic
sanctions on some Belarusian officials and companies. Nevertheless,
Lukashenko’s criticism of Russia’s
annexation of the Crimea peninsula in Ukraine last year, his host-
ing of Ukraine peace talks and his
pardoning of six opposition leaders
in August suggest he is seeking to
improve his image in the west, observers say.
‘We have carried out everything the
west wanted on the eve of the elections. If there is a desire in the west
to improve our relations, nobody and
nothing can prevent that,’ Lukashenko said as he cast his vote. ‘The
ball is now firmly in the west’s court.’
Relations with Moscow, meanwhile,
have shown signs of strain. In September, Vladimir Putin approved a
plan to build an airbase in Belarus,
but early this month Lukashenko said
his country had no need for such a
base, appearing to bow to public protests on the eve of the election.

‘CSR spend
to rise’
New Delhi, Oct 12 (PTI):
Corporates can allocate Rs 20,000
-25,000 crore for their social responsibility initiatives, but there is a need
for greater sensitisation for the companies to give back to the society,
says non-profit organisation Smile
Foundation.
‘As the CSR spending is still not
completely mandatory for the corporate yet, we expect a surge in the
coming years when companies start
witnessing the changes that start
taking place at the grassroot levels’,
Smile Foundation co-founder Santanu Mishra said.
On the number of corporates who
have mandated Smile Foundation for
their CSR activities this year, Mishra
said ‘.. in total, be it a big or small
support, around 100 corporates supported us last year alone, including
Ericsson India, Canara HSBC OBC
Life Insurance and Indigo’.
Mishra believes it makes business
and economic sense for the organisations to form partnership and achieve
the joint agenda of social development in an area of their choice.
‘Such partnerships can play a
complementary and supplementary
role with the government mission of
contributing towards social development in a much bigger way.

that the new framework is realistic,
simple to implement and affordable
in terms of cost and time.
Jaitley said, ‘I must, however, add
that the countries in my constituency are bucking the trend and are
expected to post reasonably strong
growth with India likely to grow at
around 7.5 per cent, Bangladesh
at 6.3 per cent, Sri Lanka at 6.5
per cent and Bhutan at seven per

Terming SDGs as ambitious, he
said they would require ambitious
financing and implementation plans.
The bank needs to work on human
development, economic growth,
jobs and social protection.
E-retailers sales
flouting
FDI norms: CAIT
New Delhi, Oct 12 (PTI):
Traders body CAIT has alleged
that e-commerce firms such as
Amazon, Flipkart and Snapdeal
are violating FDI norms by holding
forthcoming festive season sales
and it has complained to the Commerce Ministry.
‘These companies solicit general
public into their respective sales
by big advertisement campaign
on print, electronic and social
media... the advertisements addressed to the public in general
tantamount to retail trading’, Confederation of All India Traders said
in a statement on Sunday.
It added: ‘These companies claim to be a marketplace and therefore can
provide only a technology
platform for the sellers
who are registered with
them. Since ownership of
inventory does not hold
by the said companies
they can not offer ‘sale’
or ‘discounts’ in totality
on their online portals but
they are doing so which
also establishes that they
are not marketplace and
as such openly flouting

Albania makes history Ireland heads for play-offs
Paris, Oct 12 (AFP):
World champions Germany secured
their place at Euro 2016 despite
labouring to a 2-1 win at home to
Georgia, while Poland also qualified
for next summer’s finals after beating
the Republic of Ireland 2-1.
Germany needed just a point
against Georgia in Leipzig to guarantee themselves a top-two finish in
Group D but Max Kruse’s 79th-minute
winner ensured Joachim Loew’s
men progressed as group winners
on Sunday.
Thomas Mueller had given Germany the lead shortly after half-time,
converting a penalty for his ninth
goal in the qualifiers, before it was
cancelled out almost immediately by
Jaba Kankava.
‘We’re happy on the whole to have
secured qualification but displeased
with our last two matches,’ said Loew,
who had seen his team lose 1-0 to
Ireland on Thursday.
‘This is not our standard, there’s still
a lot of work ahead of us,’ he added.

side, consigning the Irish, who saw
John O’Shea sent off late on, to November’s play-offs.
‘We are all disappointed after doing
brilliantly against Germany (last time
out). We let ourselves down. We
had the confidence and expected to
win,’ said Ireland defender Seamus
Coleman.
‘We have a big month now in November and we have to get going
again.’
In the group’s other game, Steven
Fletcher scored a hat-trick as Scotland finished their unsuccessful campaign with a 6-0 mauling of Gibraltar
in Portugal.
Defeat at home to Serbia on Thursday had left Albania needing three
points in Yerevan to edge ahead of
Denmark to claim second place in
Group I and they made the most of
their second chance.
Kamo Hovhannisyan turned into
his own net to give Albania a ninthminute lead before Berat Xhimshiti
made it 2-0 midway through the
first half.
Substitute Armando Sadiku then
added a third 14 minutes from time as
Gianni De Biasi’s side secured their
spot at next summer’s tournament
in France.
‘This has been a big success, that’s
obvious,’ De Biasi said.
‘Every victory makes us happy, but
this one is the most valuable.’
Portugal, already through as group
winners, registered their seventh
successive qualifying victory as they
overcame Serbia 2-1 in Belgrade.
The visitors were without the rested
Cristiano Ronaldo but took a fifthminute lead through stand-in skipper
Nani as the ex-Manchester United
winger converted the rebound after
Danny’s shot was saved by Vladimir
Stojkovic.
Serbia replied through Zoran Tosic
on 65 minutes but Joao Moutinho’s
terrific curling strike handed Portugal
all three points as the hosts saw both
Aleksandar Mitrovic and Nemanja
Matic sent off late on.
Romania punches ticket
Romania nailed down the second
qualifying spot in Group F after easing
past the Faroe Islands in Torshavn.
Constantin Budescu scored twice
with Alexandru Maxim also on
target to ensure Romania went
through as group runners-up
behind European Championship
debutants Northern Ireland, who
rounded out their qualifying campaign with a 1-1 draw in Finland.

‘brilliant’ Crist
Indore, Oct 12:
Experienced campaigner Jalaj
Saxena completed his 11th first class

middle and lower order struggled
to resist as Tamilnadu seized three
points from the drawn Ranji Trophy
match, here yesterday.
Replying to visitors’ massive 596 for

all out for 407 despite openers putting
on 213 for the first wicket.
Tamilnadu captain Abhinav Mukund was obviously happy with the
effort and said ‘Aswin Crist was
brilliant. We were one bowler short

and I would say the bowlers did a
commendable job,’ said Mukund.
Crist was quick and importantly

‘Rohit made batting look

Dhoni praises Rahane; laments poor
death bowling
Kanpur, Oct 12:
It was a hard fought day for India
on the field as they were made to
chase 304 under the sweltering heat
of Kanpur. India fell short by five runs
of the target and Rohit Sharma’s magnificent 150 in the run-chase went
in vain. Giving him good company
at the other end and sharing a 149run stand for the second wicket was
Ajinkya Rahane. For Dhoni, the duo’s
partnership was one of the biggest
positives to take away from the loss.
‘The way Rohit and Rahane batted, it looked as if the pitch became
quite easy to bat on. But it could be
because of the quality they have in
their batting that it seemed it was
easy to bat on,’ Dhoni said. ‘I felt Rohit took the risks of going for the big
shots very well. When you’re chasing
300, you have to keep taking risks at
regular intervals, and I felt that’s what
he did brilliantly.’
Elaborating further on Rohit’s century, Dhoni said, ‘The way Rohit carried on after getting a hundred was
impressive. It was very hot and humid, but it was remarkable to see him
carry on. We have a lot of positives
that we can take out of this game.
But, there are a few areas where
we have to work, and as individuals,
take responsibility of those particular
occasions. Other than that, it’s quite
good. I felt the first 35 overs were very
good for us, when we were bowling
and batting.’
Dhoni also cited R Ashwin’s absence in the middle of the innings as
a crucial turning point in the game.
Ashwin suffered a side strain while
fielding a ball off his own bowling, and
Rohit Sharma
ner Aditya Shrivastava (90) batted
for some time together before
left-arM spinner denied the latter a
century by trapping him.
After that Saxena completed his
hundred but could not last long
and host’ batting line up crumbled.
Only wicket-keeper batsman Naman
Ojha (87) fought well but others
fared poorly.
Anderson out

Wellington, Oct 12:
All-rounder Corey Anderson has
been ruled out of New Zealand’s tour
of Australia with a back injury and
been replaced by Mitchell Santner,
the team said on Monday.
The 24-year-old Anderson suffered the
injury on New Zealand’s tour of England
and had not recovered sufficiently to
shoulder a bowling workload, selector
Gavin Larsen said in a statement.
‘Corey hasn’t been able to recover as
quickly as we hoped and we’ve chosen
not to try to rush him back,’ said Larsen.
‘We’ve always said there were a
number of checkpoints for him to meet
before our departure date, and we’re now
in a position to confirm he’s not ready.

‘legend’ Miandad
Abu Dhabi, Oct 12:
Younis Khan is poised to surpass
Javed Miandad as Pakistan’s greatest
Test match run scorer, but refuses to
be considered the equal of a man he
describes as a ‘legend and an idol.’
The 37-year-old needs just 19
more runs in the three-Test series
against England starting on Tuesday to pass Miandad’s tally of 8,832
runs scored in 124 matches during
an illustrious career which stretched
from 1976 to 1993.
Younis has so far scored 8,814 runs
in 101 Tests, with a Pakistan record
of 30 centuries.
‘It would be great to achieve the
record. I never thought I would do it
at the start of my career,’ said Younis.
‘Passing Miandad would be
great but I am in no way close to
the great man who is a legend of
Pakistan cricket.’
He added: ‘Even after passing
his tally of runs I would not be
able to attain the heights that Miandad achieved. He was idolised
by millions.’

Srinagar, Oct 12 (PTI):
Noted Kashmiri writer and poet
Ghulam Nabi Khayal has joined the
bandwagon of authors returning their
Sahitya Akademi awards, saying the
minorities in the country today feel
‘unsafe and threatened’.
‘I have decided to return the award.
The minorities in the country are feeling unsafe and threatened. They feel
their future is bleak,’ Khayal told.
Khayal, who won the prestigious
honour for his book ‘Gashik Minaar’
(Luminaries) in 1975, said he would
soon return the cash prize and copper
plaque to the Akademi.
‘The government has failed in fulfilling its duty of protecting the minorities
as enshrined in the Constitution of the
country,’ he said.
‘I cannot witness such worst situa-
for the project. The report also cited
the study undertaken by the United
Nations Development Programme
(UNDP) which pointed out possible
hydro-geological disturbances in the
area due to the extraction of ground
water.
Based on these recommendation,
the State government has decided
not to give permission for the Coal
Bed Methane (CBM) extraction
project and corresponding orders
have been issued. Further, the GO
has recommended to the Union
Government to drop the proposals to extract CBM in the Cauvery
delta districts and also urged it to
consult the State government before
launching any initiatives about this
project.

As the AIADMK will normally be the
first party to kickstart election works,
these district secretaries have a big
task ahead before them.
Last week, while releasing the new
office-bearers list, Jayalalithaa asked
AIADMK members to extend their full
cooperation to them.
Stating that the new officebearers are entitled to carry out
their duties with immediate effect,
Jayalalithaa urged them to give
their best to the party.

in protest against the growing hatred
against minorities in India,’ he said.
This is the first time that a Kashmiri writer has decided to return the
literary honour to protest the ‘communal atmosphere’ in some parts of
the country ‘which is spreading its
tentacles from Maharashtra to Uttar
Pradesh and elsewhere’.
‘After the BJP-led government assumed power in India, an alarming
communal situation has started arising. Adverse regional and religious
polarization is happening in entire
India and Jammu and Kashmir is no
exception,’ he added.
The writer said the religious harmony and secularism of the country
is under threat today.

‘We won’t be cowed down by such
events and the book launch will happen
as planned,’ he said and soon after was
present at a media interaction along
with Kasuri while still drenched in paint.
Mumbai police spokesperson
Dhananjay Kulkarni said the incident
occurred in front of Kulkarni’s house
near Kings circle in suburban Matunga at around 9.30 a.m.
‘About 5-7 persons shouted some
slogans and threw colour or ink on
him,’ he said, adding city police will
provide security for the event to prevent any untoward incident.
The attack drew sharp condemnation from parties, with Congress saying that “the idea of India as the most
liberal democratic country, despite all
our neighbours having gone the other
way, is being destroyed in the root’.

Mishra keen to cement spot in ODIs
Kanpur, Oct 12 (PTI):
Making traditional leg-spin look attractive and effective in the opening
ODI against South Africa, India’s Amit
Mishra is keen to hold on to his ODI
spot after an impressive return to the
limited-overs field here.
Mishra made his presence felt
in the five-run loss against the
visitors on Sunday with the allimportant wickets of Hashim Amla
and David Miller. The Delhi-born
player, who has made a place for
himself in the Test squad, now
wants to become an ODI regular
as well. Before the match at Green
Park, Mishra last played an ODI
against West Indies last year.
‘It is a great feeling to come back
into the ODI side and straightaway
put up a good bowling performance,’ Mishra told BCCI.TV.
‘From here on I would only look
to better my performances if I get
a chance in the forthcoming ODIs.
I feel whenever you play for India
you need to have self confidence.
Irrespective of the fact that you
are taking wickets or not; the most
important thing is to bowl well and
pitch the ball in the right areas.
‘I believe I am bowling well at
the moment and I am enjoying
every bit of it. I am looking
to take as many wickets as possible at the
moment and bowl according to the match
situation,’ he added.
Mishra did his bit for the
Mahendra Singh Dhoni-led side
as he picked up two wickets in
his 10-over spell, giving away just
47 runs. The 32-year-old player
said that he worked to a plan that
worked well for him.
‘I made a conscious effort to flight
the ball and mix the deliveries. I
didn’t want the batsmen to settle
and get used to a particular type
of delivery. The aim was to keep
mixing it up and I believe I was
successful in it to some extent,’
he said.
Mishra cleaned up a dangerouslooking Amla (37) in the 24th over
with a straight on faster one
and the South African runmachine saw the ball brush
his pads to crash on to the
stumps. Mishra said that
aiming at Amla’s weakness
was his target.
‘We know that Hashim Amla
plays a lot on the back foot. My
aim was to bowl a straight line to
him and get the ball to brush his
pads or get him out bowled.
‘That is exactly what happened
during the match. I tossed up a
few to him and got the ball to spin.
But then, after a lot of spinning
deliveries I surprised him with my
straighter one. He got beaten and
I got him bowled,’ Mishra said.

I see
shortcomings in:
myself Amitabh
Actor Amitabh Bachchan, who has
achieved immense success in his
four-decade-old career, says he is not
incomparable. I don’t believe that I am
incomparable and I am the owner of
any big titles. Every day is a learning
experience. Everyday I see there are
shortcomings in me. You learn from
working with the younger generation
who are very proficient,’ Bachchan,
who turned 73 recently, said.
The Don star feels there should be
no comparison between Indian cinema and Hollywood. To compare ourselves with other (west) industry is a
very natural and normal phenomena.
We appreciate what the west does. We
appreciate the way they make movies.
However, we need to be proud about
our own industry and our own talent.
The degree of talent that exists in our
artistes both in technology and creative
field is huge,’ he said. The Naseeb star
feels earlier the dancing and singing part
from Indian films was criticised but now
the film industry abroad looks upto Indian
cinema.
There was a time for many many
years when the western world didn’t
look upon us too kindly. They didn’t
like the way our films were made. They
didn’t like the dance and singing routine.
‘They are economically more superior to us. Now they have understood
what our circumstances are and they
are appreciating our kind of cinema
as well..they see the values that we
bring in our stories. Besides they see
the great amount of technology that
we have today,’ the Sholay actor said.
