Upcoming Trip CMC Vice President, George Naxera, is heading to Russia next month to climb the highest peak in Europe, Mt Elbrus (18,513’). The expedition will last about a week. George will update a daily expedition log during the trip, which you can follow here: http://www.summitpost.org/expedition-log-mtelbrus-2012/787327 CMC Highpointers Over the years, club members have ventured out to climb many peaks nationwide and worldwide. Several of them have set the goal of climbing all 50 State high points. A few have reached that goal: Don Wallace finished on July 16th, 1980 on Mt. Hood in Oregon while climbing with George Griffin, Roger Truesdale finished on June 15th, 2005 on Denali in Alaska, and George Naxera finished on March 5th, 2012 on Mauna Kea in Hawaii. There are other members who are working on climbing the state high points. Hopeful they will see the same success as the others. 2012 Outdoor Climbing Season It's here! Devils Tower Outing We are again planning a Memorial weekend outing to Devils Tower. The plan will be to leave mid-week for Wyoming, climb the Tower, then head back towards Chicago hopefully hitting other climbing areas on the way. This trip is trad climbing. If you are interested in going or would like more information on the outing please contact Chris Gregory, Safety Chair, at [email protected]. Don't forget to get your 2012 admission sticker before visiting Devils Lake for the first time this year. The admission sticker is required for all vehicles that enter a Wisconsin state park, recreational area, state forest, and some trail parking areas. Stickers can be purchases at state park and forest entrances, self-service stations, DNR service centers, and on-line through Friends of Wisconsin State Parks. For more information about the admission stickers visit http://www.dnr.state.wi.us/org/land/parks/fees/ Southern IL Trip The first outing of the year was Jackson Falls in Southern IL from April 20-22nd. We left our home on Thursday, April 19, 2012 at 4:00pm to travel to Jackson Falls in Southern Illinois. Mike Edens and Eva Szakacs traveled with us. We camped in a beautiful campsite surrounded by towering pine trees and an abundant amount of poison ivy. Friday morning we were joined by Wayne Martin and his guest, Mike Stanton, as we climbed the Royal Arch Area utilizing trad, top rope and sport climbing techniques. We climbed Tina’s Sole Kitchen (5.7), Easy Gulley Trad (5.6), Smidgen (5.6), Pete’s Lead (5.7), and Deedle Dumps (5.8). Unfortunately we were graced with some liquid sunshine and the rock surface quickly became wet. We decided to drive to Carbondale for a hamburger and to read some books at Barnes and Noble. Saturday was an overcast and chilly day. The group, now close to 20 participants, walked to Mr. Jimmy’s wall and climbed Chicken Shack (5.6), Spiders from Mars (5.10B), Venom (5.10A), Luscious Babes (5.8), Chimichunga (5.8+), Chit Chat (5.8 Trad crack), and an unknown sport climb on Beaver Wall, that the group believed to be a 5.8+ and which was named Jamie’s Climb. This climb is not named in the book and Jamie Norris pointed out the climb 2 years ago. Saturday night was filled with the camaraderie of members and guests sitting around the campfire enjoying Keith Bielat’s homemade sloppy joes, prepared over the fire in a Dutch Oven. Other members included Linda Hills, Marcus Daubaras (with his daughter as a guest), Jacek Witkos, Justin and Michelle Rich, as well as Victoria, David, Grace, Crystle, Constantine, Julia and Dan. The cloudy sky of Sunday morning quickly turned to an hour long heavy rain which dampened the rock as well as the spirits of the members and guests. Some participants decided to “bug” out and head for home. Others decided to enjoy a hardy hike about the area enjoying the flora and fauna of oak, tulip, fir, and maple trees; Jack in the Pulpit, May Apples, and raspberry blossoms; and even some cactus plants. The silence and greenery of the forest can be very soothing to the soul of the urban inhabitant. On the way out of Jackson Falls, we stopped at the Ozark General Store to fill-up the gas tank and enjoy a quick lunch . . . a support of the local economy. Until next time, Chris and Sue Gregory Top of Chicken Shack and Spiders from Mars at Mr. Jimmy's Wall. Photo taken in 2010.
