To obtain the best possible returns out of
investment on automation, it is necessary to
specify the equipment very carefully for
packaging lines and move towards integration.
Since the plant keeps growing, it is necessary
to make specifications in a manner that options
for future expansions are kept open. This can
be achieved by specifying Technology instead
of Brands. Technology should help to integrate
machines and packaging lines in order to
ensure optimum performance.
The session will focus on packaging
sustainability using environmentally-sensitive
life cycle analysis (LCA) methods. The panel
will discuss bio plastics, biodegradation,
recycling, down-gauging, reusability, energy
optimization and reduction of carbon
footprint. The discussion will focus on actual
realization of sustainable outcomes within a
defined time frame and the policy framework,
which will enable a faster shift to sustainable
and affordable packaging.

Leader Speak…
Satish Ansingkar, Vice President- Sales,
B&R Industrial Automation Pvt. Ltd. has
more than 25 years of experience in the
automation industry. This Bachelor of
Engineering in Instrumentation has played
the role of Manufacturing Manager at GE
Group Company- CNC Controls, Application
Manager at Control Techniques and Sales
Manager at formerly Alstom (formerly known
as Cegelec). He has thoroughly studied the
machine tool industry, plastic industry,
packaging industry, textile industry and
pharmaceutical industry and as a panelist at
the International Packaging Conclave, he
would be highlighting the upcoming trends in
Automation segment.
How would you define Automation as the
system integrator in packaging industry?
Automation in packaging machines is like
what brain is to the body. It has the role of
coordination, faster reaction, safety and
correction. It has changed the outlook of the
packaging and continues to do so.
What has been the focus of B&R
Automation in the Indian market?
Although B & R is not limited to or limited by
any particular industry segment, packaging
always remained one of our key focuses since
developing country like India has enormous
space and scope to grow in this vertical. B & R
has not only contributed to the advancements
in the packaging, it has strived hard to
introduce the advanced technology even if it
meant a lot more effort.
Do you think the Indian customer, today, is
ready to adapt to the international
standard technologies?
India is ready to adapt the most modern and
international technologies. It has capacity to
not only adapt but also renovate it. The hurdle
is always the appreciation of technology in
terms of cost. All the technologies do not
become less priced if they are made in
volumes. The machinery segment cannot be
compared with gadgets or the PC segment.
The volumes in machinery are incomparable
to gadgets or PC industry.
What are the challenges faced by the Indian
Packaging Industry, specially the
automation segment?
Unwillingness to raise even the reasonable
cost towards the newer and better automation,
unwillingness to the appreciation to the finer
aspects of end product by consumer,
resistance due to semi-skilled manpower and
resistance due to maintainability of machine
or process are the main challenges faced by
automation.
Tell us about the recent developments at
B&R Automation for the packaging
industry.
B & R has formed a global network of
packaging vertical within their subsidiaries
and channel partners across the globe. This
team is working closely worldwide. B & R is
an active member of PackML & OMAC
group. These are international organisations
working on standardization of communication
between the machines, start up procedures,
function blocks and standard practices which
would be beneficial to end user in terms of
common platform while choosing any
machine. B & R has come out with a new
communication concept called OPEN safety
technology which is based on ethernet. This
will help the user in future. Also, B & R has
developed special hardware & software for
print mark control, registration control, multi
axis synchronization and sensor interface such
as camera.
What are the products you will be
displaying at PackPlus 2012?
B & R will display all of its product range,
which includes a small HMI with integrated
PLC & I/os. Powerful CPU & large touch
screens with multi touch function, powerful
India is ready to adapt the most modern

it.

servo drives & servo motors, industrial PCs &
stepper drive/motor, planetary gear box and
inverter will also be on display.
How do you think an event like
International Packaging Conclave can
benefit the users and the suppliers from the
industry?
Such events can bring users, OEMs, suppliers
of automation/ instrumentation / mechanical /
electrical, consultants and integrators on one
platform. This generates and percolates the
information vertically as well as laterally.
What would be the subject of your session
and what issues you plan to raise at the
panel discussion?
We would focus on automation as the
necessity and not the fancy in the packaging
industry. Issues like the need of new concept
like OPEN Safety, flexible & modular
automation in packaging, new concepts of B
& R hardware and role of single tool of
development software will be discussed.

Leader Speak…
Bimal Kumar Lakhotia, National Head –
Packaging Development &
Commercialization, Hindustan Coca Cola
Beverages, holds more than 14 years of
experience in diversified packaging
applications. He has been focusing on
functional aspects of Packaging in his stint in
Ranbaxy Laboratories Ltd. (Pharmaceutical
MNC), Consumers aspects of packaging in
Frito Lays India (PepsiCo India Holdings)
and Britannia Industries (largest bake good
manufacturer in India). In his present role, he
is spearheading the packaging development
and commercialization function for
Hindustan Coca Cola Beverages since April
2011 and is responsible for beverage package
performance across supply chain for brands
like Coca Cola, Sprite, Thumps Up, Fanta
and Kinley in India.
In a freewheeling conversation, he shares his
insight into the present scenario of the India
Packaging Industry…
How would you comment on the
importance of integrity in packaging
lines?
Integrity is the key to any package
performance across varied category of
products. The same becomes of utmost
importance in food and pharmaceutical
segment. The two important attributes which
ensure good package integrity are packaging
material and package converting equipment.
The interface of the material-machine
determines the package integrity with respect
to design, shape & sealing and the same can
be envisaged across the life cycle of a product
– package – proposition.
What is the significance of flexibility? How
do companies tend to meet seasonal rise in
demands?
With the growing supply chain challenges
and competitive environment in FMCG
sector, 'flexibility' and 'fast turn-around' are
two success criteria. Flexibility helps in
quick adaptation to the changes, reducing
dependency, optimization of resources and
opens up avenues for innovation.
Talking about the seasonal rise in demands,
when the targets / aspirations are known, one
allocates / channelizes the resource to meet
the requirements.
What are the new demands in the
packaging line? What kind of challenges
are faced by the Indian customer?
Two words defining the demands are –
'Faster' & 'Better', which manifest themselves
in the form of flexibility, fast changeover,
common tooling/change parts, line
balancing, consistent and quality output.
Due to slow advancement in packaging over
a period of time, the Indian customer still
perceives packaging as 'expensive'. With
urbanization gaining ground, packaging is
perceived as something which only
contains/holds and is a waste after use, and
not as a 'value add'. Nevertheless, today's
customer in India is getting into higher
disposable income, investing on self and
have started realizing the benefits / changes
to lifestyle that packaging can bring.
Do you think India, today, matches the
international standard of products and
technology in terms of packaging?
India has just started seeing the technology
involvement of packaging and its benefits. It
has graduated long way in the field of
pharmaceutical and flexible packaging but
with the per capita packaging consumption
being very small, it has a long way to go
before we match the international standard
and technology in terms of packaging.
How do you foresee the future of the
The two important attributes which
ensure good package integrity are
packaging material and package converting
equipment.
Bimal Kumar Lakhotia,
National Head – PDC
Hindustan Coca Cola Beverages,
industry?
With the increase in consumer awareness,
socio-economic growth and westernization
happening, packaging industry is bound to
grow. This is one sector, which has seen
phenomenal growth and there is no reason for
looking back.
Time is not far when
'packaging will lead to product development'
and not 'product leading the package
development'
In your opinion what issues should be
raised at the International Packaging
Conclave panel discussion and what kind
of answers should be looked for?
The conclave should focus on:
l
Understanding of package expectation
from a shopper / consumer perspective
l
Packaging linkage across supply chain in
any organization
l
Packaging material / machine interface,
and
l
Responsible packaging

At Full Speed
Robatech presents efficient and intelligent
hotmelt system solutions which effectively support
the packaging industry and producers of
packaging articles.
At PackPlus 2012, Greater Noida, Robatech will
be displaying its efficient adhesive application
solutions. The highlights SpeedStarTM Diamond,
SXTM Diamond, RobaVisTM and Concept
DiamondTM are set to impress the visitors with
their innovative pluses.
Robatech offers customized packaging solutions
for the packaging industry and producers of
packaging articles. Small folding boxes are
normally used for sweets and chewing gum, and
cardboard sheaths and wrappers for bars of
chocolate. They feature particularly small glued
flaps, which must be glued neatly and precisely
not least in the interest of an effective presentation
at the POS. The hotmelt applicator heads
SpeedStarTM Diamond used for this purpose set
entirely new standards when it comes to speed,
durability and precision. Based on their
outstanding design these heads won the coveted
red dot design award 2012 which is a globally
acknowledged mark of quality. As a world
novelty, the SpeedStarTM applicator heads can
place up to 800 dots of adhesive per second.
Robatech succeeds with them in combining
extremely short switching cycles with a high wear
resistance. In spite of temperatures of up to 185 °C
and viscosities of up to 2500mPas, the
electromechanical devices reach a much longer
useful life than conventional heads. Moreover,
they are especially precise because the stroke of
the shut-off needle is monitored and
automatically adjusted. The repetition accuracy is
good since the dot size and position are
guaranteed without manual adjustment
throughout the head's life. A further advantage is
the reduced adhesive consumption thanks to
smaller dot sizes or the stitching function. The
heat-resistant cool-touch insulation clearly
improves the energy
efficiency and protects the
operating personnel from
burns. At the same time it
ensures that sweets of e.g.
chocolate which heat up
quickly don't start to melt.
User-friendly Operating
Surface & Networkable
Electronics: One of the
other products from
Robatech, which scores
with its sustainability, is the
new hotmelt applicator
ConceptTM Diamond of the
Greenline series. Its insulation and the adhesive
distributor clearly result in an energy saving while
protecting the operator from injury. The device is
based on latest technologies such as the
networkable ICS-Net electronics and the user-
friendly RobaVisTM touch screen
for straightforward and intuitive
operation. The information and
operating terminal can also be
installed in an external housing. To
guarantee a constant quantity of
adhesive in the applicator head, the
Concept devices can be connected to
the automatic RobaFeedTM system.
This fills the melting tank directly
from a separate granulate container, i.e. manual
refilling is no longer needed. It improves the
safety of the personnel and prevents tank
contamination.

Carry Forward!
Vibgyor International
(P) Ltd. presents a special
feature on Nitrogen
dosing systems and
Airbags for cargo
protection.
UltraDoser Liquid
Nitrogen Dosing
The UltraDoser is the
multi-purpose liquid
nitrogen (LN2) dosing
system utilizing advanced
cryogenic technology and
PLC programming.
Chart engineers designed an ultra-efficient
system for low to medium production line speeds
to dispense a precise dose of LN2 into every
container every time. The LN2 gasifies and is
either trapped in the container to add rigidity or
escapes with oxygen to inert the headspace.
Features
l
Compact Size – enables installation in limited
spaces
l
Precise Dosing – delivers consistent, accurate
dosing
l
Discrete Dosing – up to 1800 containers per
minute* (controller dependant)
l
Discrete or Continuous Dosing – change
over defined by user
l
Vacuum Insulated Technology – the most
efficient use of LN2
l
SoftDose Compatible – Chart's proven
technology for hot fill, powder, and granular
applications.
How it Works
LN2 is supplied to the UltraDoser by a standard 10
ft (3 mt) vacuum insulated CryotechFlex hose
(various lengths available) and flows into the
dosing head. A 24vdc PNP sensor detects the
speed of the line (encoder compatible for higher
speeds); a second 24vdc PNP sensor detects the
presence of a container. When a container is
detected, the dosing head opens and dispenses an
exact amount of pure LN2.
Key Benefits
l
Lightweight PET – reduce the weight of PET
for cost and environmental savings
l
Glass to PET Transition – eliminate glass
safety hazards and weight of containers
l
Bottle Rigidity – maintain bottle shape even

Certified Safety In The Drive Increases Employee Safety & Productivity
The safe servo drives from B&R's ACOPOS
multi series can be seamlessly integrated in
POWERLINK-based networks via open
SAFETY and used to monitor the motor in
real-time. Improved machine dynamics with
in crea s ed s a fety is n o lo n g er a
contradiction. B&R Industrial Automation
(P) Ltd. presents a feature on certified
safety in the drive that increases employee
safety & productivity
The safe servo drives from B&R's
ACOPOSmulti series can be seamlessly
integrated in POWERLINK-based
networks via openSAFETY and used to
monitor the motor in real-time. Improved
machine dynamics with increased safety is
no longer a contradiction.
When it comes to protecting the lives and
well-being of their employees, companies
must make no compromise. That
compromises are made nonetheless can be
attributed to three factors: The workers
themselves are confronted with a choice
between operating machines more safely
and operating them more efficiently. There
is an even broader conflict of interest for a
company's management. A company must
not only protect its qualified workforce and
capital investments, but ensure that both are
able to provide maximum productivity.
Furthermore, there's no such thing as a
perfect technical solution or a moving
machine part that can be stopped
instantaneously. Even traditional safety
circuits with cut-off relays are subject to
response times inherent in the system,
comparable to the moment of shock a driver
experiences before slamming on the brakes.
The error detection and
response time, for
example when the safe
maximum speed is
exceeded in setup mode, is
generally around 80 ms. If
the error was caused by an
incorrect set value from
the control system, this
delay would be sufficient
for the drive to accelerate
to its maximum speed
before the usual torque
cut-off and any
additionally activated
short-circuit breaking procedure is
initialized. This effects the
amount of force with which an obstacle
would be hit, and of course expands the total
stopping distance. The permissible
maximum speed must therefore be set
accordingly in order to maintain the
necessary level of safety.
100 Times More Safety
By integrating safety technology right in its
servo drives and servo motors, B&R has
redefined how stopping distances and
impact energy are calculated. The relayfreeSafeMC safety circuit, which is
installed in all ACOPOSmulti drive units,
automatically monitors every reaction of
the motor to the instructions from the servo
drive. This is done using safe, fully digital,
high-precision, high resolution encoders
that are mounted to the motor shaft on all
B&R synchronous servo motors and are
certified according to EN ISO 13849. The
electronics are integrated directly in the
drive to avoid additional response times.
This has enabled B&R to shorten the error
response time to 7 ms. In the eventof error,
the motor now has less than a tenth of the
time to accelerate and to gain hazardous
momentum.
As the kinetic energy and corresponding
response distance increase with the square
of the speed, these two critical
characteristics are reduced to less than
1/100 compared conventional solutions.
“This does not only improve the workplace
safety, but also increases productivity on the
machine,” states Dipl.Ing.AloisHolzleitner, Business Manager for
Motion products, B&R.
“Depending on the priority, the reduction of
these characteristics and the resulting
shorter braking distances makes it possible
to reduce the safety distances, thereby
allowing for smaller machine dimensions
and/or increased permissible speed limits
during operation with Safe Limited Speed,”
he says.
Seamless Integration In Existing Systems
The safety logic included in the
ACOPOSmulti servo drives is identical to
the proven safe I/O components from the
X20 series. “This gives users the peace of
mind that comes with using electronic
components that have proven themselves
thousands of times in the field,” says
AloisHolzleitner. “Plus, the resulting
synergy has a direct effect on the costs and
uniformity during system development,” he
states.
ACOPOSmulti with SafeMC can be
seamlessly integrated in the existing system
with the SafeLO GIC safety controller and
the X20 Safe I/O. For developers, the these
units are addressed no differently than the
X20 I/O channels. They are also managed
within the same development environment:
SafeDESIGNER in B&R's Automation
Studio. Autonomous configuration of the
SafeMC components and the embedded
parameter chip allow quicker and easier
configuration during maintenance. Logging
and password protection make it possible to
track maintenance actions.
A major advantage of B&R's 'Integrated
Safety Technology' is the elimination of
redundant cabling and external monitoring
modules for the safety technology. Data is
transferred with virtual wiring via the
machine bus system in an intrinsically safe
protocol called openSAFET Y, which
enables easy data communication with the
control system while reliably excluding
feedback. B&R automation solutions do
this using POWERLIN K. As the name
suggests, openSAFET Y is not tied to a
specific manufacturer and can be used on
any fieldbus system, preferably in Industrial
Ethernet networks. This makes it easy to
integrate the safe drives regardless of the
controller being used.
Contd. on Page 17
16
A further advantage of virtual wiring over
the network is the possibility of designing
modular machine concepts. Without the
complicated wiring of Estop chains, it is
simple to connect ready-made machine
parts, including safe drives. This allows a
single safeLO GIC safety controller to
access up to 80 safe drives from our
ACOPOSmulti series, which ranges up to
120 kW.
Certified Intelligence
In February 2010, B&R received
certification from TÜV Rheinland for
thecsafety-oriented drive system and its
intelligent safety functions, which B&R
calls Smart Safe Reaction and which helps
ensure optimum usage of safety equipment.
This was followed by the certification of the
functions STO (Safe Torque Off), SBC
(Safe Brake Control) and SS1 (Safe Stop 1)
up to Cat. 4/ PL.e in accordance with EN
ISO 13849-1 and up to SIL 3 in accordance
with EN 62061/IE C 61508.Certification up
to Cat. 3 PL.d and SIL 3 is sufficient for the
remaining functions SOS (Safe Operating
Stop), SS2 (Safe Stop 2), SLS (Safety
Limited Speed), SMS (Safe Maximum
Speed), SDI (Safe Direction) and SLI
(Safety Limited Increments). A clear benefit
of the system intelligence in
ACOPOSmultiSafeMC is the universal
availability of diagnostics provided by the
integrated trace and oscilloscope functions.
Together with the control and status
functions, these can be used to display the
monitored safety limits and speeds. Thanks
to simple data transmission to the process
control system provided by the bus
connection, the diagnostics can also be
integrated in the machine's visualization
and control systems. This provides machine
operators and supervisors with in-depth,
easy-to-understand information about the
cause and type of safety violations as well as
the system's response, and enables them to
respond immediately.
“SafeMC with ACOPOSmulti and B&R
synchronous servo motors are based on the
open network-based safety standard
openSAFETY. This combination is the
logical complement to the portfolio of
integrated safety components for machine
and systems manufacturing, which has
proven itself in the field and has been
certified for quite some time,” asserts
AloisHolzleitner. “This makes B&R one of
“Open SAFETY is a modern safety concept that
allows Sidel to help our customers reduce the
number of device and the overall complexity of
machine automation.”

Commercial Part Technical Manager, SIDEL
the first manufacturers to provide a fully
network-integrated safety system including
intelligent drive safety functions. Such a
system increases machine efficiency and
productivity, while at the same time
improving workplace safety,” he concludes.

Press On!
Soma Engineering, a leading global provider of
converting machines, has joined hands with
Insight Communication & Print Solution (P)
Ltd. as sales and service partner for India and
surrounding countries. Insight have strong sales
and service network in India with offices in India
Delhi, Mumbai, Pune, Chennai, Hyderabad,
Ahemdabad, Kolkata and Bangalore.
Recently the company launched its profit making
technology for printers at DRUPA 2012 – the all
new PREMIA flexographic printing press.
Available with an array of new technologies, the
press offers the combined benefits of reduced
changeover times with less waste of both material
and consumables. With the emphasis on efficient
operation and time and cost savings, the PREMIA
is optimised for reduced energy consumption and
also addresses current environmental
considerations.
“In developing the press, our main focus was on
improving machine up-time,” said Pavla Kusa,
Brand Manager, Soma Engineering. “Special
attention was directed to minimising both the
environmental impact and the energy
consumption levels associated with the print
production process and in the manufacture of the
press itself,” he added. SOMA Engineering is
meeting the customer demands for high
performance, quality built presses that permit
short to long run print jobs to be produced both
efficiently and cost effectively.
“The concept of 'profit making technology' is a
reality for us,” asserted Kusa. “Our aim is to
develop technology, which cost effectively
maximises profits for our customers and gives
them a competitive edge. Our designers
constantly strive to optimise and enhance the
technology of our machines based on research,
customer feed-back and market trends. The new
PREMIA is our response,” he added.
The new PREMIA is available for mid and wide
web applications starting from 850 mm, through
to 1100, 1320 and 1450 mm and is equipped with
eight printing units. The specification includes a
print repeat length of 300 to 915mm from a
maximum reel diameter of 1000 mm with option
for 1300 mm. Optional shaft-less unwind and
rewind systems are also available. Time saving
features includes SOMA's INK READY system, a
unit that permits preparation of any unused
printing decks for new jobs while an existing one
is being run. This means ink wash-up, anilox roll
changes, ink and viscosity control can all be
carried out on the unused decks to save time.
Key user benefits include easy removal of the
anilox rollers while the machine is running, access
to doctor blade chambers not currently in use and
printing sleeve push-off to assist job changes. All
this represent significant reductions in
changeover times. To further reduce the same,
PREMIA is equipped with new generation
INKFLOW ELITE inking and INKSTORM
wash-up system including newly designed FAST
BLADE system for comfortable doctor blade
changeovers. These innovative systems further
represent how SOMA designers have worked to
improve machine up-time. Unique and more
sophisticated construction, high efficiency and
ease of operator comfort are also the key benefits.
The PREMIA also benefits from QUICK PASS,
an improved web threading system from SOMA.
The motor driven web threading unit now features
imperia-10-8-cl
Premia
a chain system.
This simple
device reduces
job set-up times
and ensures that
web path travel
throughout the
press is accurately guided from unwind to rewind.
In addition rewind splicing has been replaced with
an ionisation bar to further speed up job
preparation. The FALCON II system permits
semi-automatic print setting at the start of every
new job. Longitudinal and cross register position
is automatically set up from printing or through
automatic impression set-up system. Automatic
impression set-up is carried out without printing
with 'printing plate protection' (PPP) function,
which protects printing sleeves against damage.
Featuring new software and technology upgrades
Soma's latest print setting system, FALCON III
was also launched at DRUPA 2012. This new
version is available for the PREMIA and enables
even faster job setting without print marks and
greater accuracy and consistency regardless of
operator skills with even less material waste. Both
systems save time and material for new job set-up
on short and medium runs. Also making its debut
at DRUPA 2012 was INK FIX colour matching
technology. “Colour matching is another activity
that can cost time and generate waste”, explained
Kusa. “When starting each new job, it is necessary
to find a correspondence between the reference
colour and the printed colour, within given
tolerances. Our INK FIX system reduces waste
and significantly increases the efficiency of onpress colour correction,” he said.
The PREMIA carries on the SOMA tradition of
sturdy robust engineering for stable, vibration
free operation and fine print quality at high
operating speeds. The press is constructed of castiron mono blocs to eliminate vibration and the
width of this casing is 80mm on the operator´s
side and 100mm on the motor side. At the central
part of the press, the total width of the lining is 200
mm for the operator's side and 220 mm on the
motor side. Attention has also been given to the
ink units, which are also of sturdier construction.
Quick and smooth acceleration or slowing down
of the material is ensured through SOMA's servo
driven technology. Lay-on and spreader roller are
now sleeved which means that they can be
changed more easily. “Different types of materials
or wear and tear mean that rollers may need to be
frequently changed,” stated Kusa. “Sleeved
rollers eliminate the need for these changes.
Central drum cleaning and an array of ergonomic
enhancements are just some of the technologies
that demonstrate our commitment to satisfying
customer demands,” he added.
SOMA has its own system for drum temperature
control that features Q-SHIELD, central drum
thermal stabilisation (CDTS) to monitor the CI
drum temperature which is electronically
controlled in combination with that of the
machine frame. This compensates for even the
smallest change in ambient temperature and
provides maximum printing impression stability
on short, medium and long runs. The system also
includes printing cylinder thermal stabilisation,
SOMA's patented PCTS technology.
The PREMIA is also equipped with a new
generation, two stage drying system that is a
departure from the rest of SOMA's flexo press
portfolio. Drying between the printing decks and
drying tunnel evaporate the solvent or water
content of the ink by blowing hot air at high speed.
A special ventilator common to both drying stages
exhausts the concentrated air from the machine.
The whole system with carefully positioned
drying heads is designed with the focus on noise
reduction. In addition, a special maintenance
concept has been developed to allow fast and
comfortable web threading of the machine. Part of
the drying system is based on new electrical and
electronic technology that automatically
regulates the system according to requirements.
“Since one of the most energy demanding parts of
a press is compressed air for pneumatic pumps,
the PREMIA is equipped with a new control
system that significantly reduces consumption.
Special ink containers, each consisting of a
double-layer shell to cool the ink dispense with
and replace traditional complex cooling systems.
In terms of safety, the PREMIA is provided with a
new type of isolation system that covers all parts
of the machine, including the drying unit, tunnel,
front and print unit covers,” concluded Kusa.
