CORSTORPHINE PUBLIC HALL
LOCATION
CORSTORPHINE PUBLIC HALL
HISTORY
The Public Hall Company was formed in 1891 with the aim
of building a hall, a library and a recreation space. Shares
were sold for £1 each and the site on the corner of Kirk Loan
was purchased. The majority of shares were held by The
Lodge, Corstorphine Literary and Geographical Society
and Corstorphine Bowling Club who are still involved.
By the late 1970’s the building was no longer able to meet
its expenses and was in financial difficulties. Corstorphine
Youth Centre Association, through fund raising and with
help from Lothian Regional Council, were able to secure
a 21 year lease for the building and hence Corstorphine
Youth and Community Centre was born. CYCC manage
the building and all the community group users. A wardens
flat in the original building ensures out of hours security and
full time supervision.
For nearly 125 years this building has been a focal meeting
place for the community. In October 2015 the Company
became a Charity with the aim of rebuilding the hall and
creating a new, dynamic meeting place for the community
which will be used by many different groups.

FIRE AT CORSTORPHINE PUBLIC HALL 2013
Unfortunately a fire broke out in
the neighbouring building no. 13,
Kirk Loan on the 15th of October
2013. This resulted in extensive fire
damage to the existing Hall as
can be seen in the photographs
opposite. It was a great loss to the
community and the many groups
which used the building on a
daily basis had to be relocated
throughout Corstorphine.
Since the fire, the insurance claim
has been settled and designs
developed for a larger, new more
flexible building on the same site.
All of the groups who have had to
find alternative accommodation
together with some new groups
are committed to helping the
community work towards the
rebuilding and are keen to return
to a much improved dynamic
new home.

CORSTORPHINE PUBLIC HALL
DESIGN PLANS
The new design provides a facility
fit for the 21st century. It includes an
additional first floor hall within the
space of the original main hall. This
will increase the number of activities
which can be catered for at any
one time and gives more flexibility
of use. A study showed the need for
additional space to accommodate
the 74 groups who would like to use
the Hall.
The most economic and best design
was to located the additional hall
at first floor retaining the building
footprint.
A new main entrance and west
extension is proposed from Saughton
Road North which will provide office,
break out space and a reception
hall. This new access ensures different
users can occupy the various halls at
the same time.
Internal improvements include new
kitchens, wash areas, Masonic Lodge
together with stairs and increased
storage.
A wardens flat is included at first floor
and second floor to complete the
refurbishment.

West Elevation to Saughton Road North
A new contemporary main entrance
extension to the west is proposed in glass
and grey cladding panels.

North Elevation to Kirk Loan
The original stone facade to Kirk Loan and
the return front gable to Saughton Road
North are retained. Due to the structurally
unsafe stonework it is proposed to rebuild
some of the rear and side walls in a steel
frame with blockwork and a traditional
render finish. This elevation to Saughton
Road North shows the worst case scenario
with the least amount of stone work
retained however onsite investigation may
allow further stone retention.
The render is designed to enhance
and highlight the existing slate roof and
stonework and provide a contemporary
horizontal link to the new structure from the
old stone wall.

The design aims to reinforce the original
character of the Hall, retaining stone walls
where structurally possible and financially
viable.

CONTEXT ELEVATIONS
The design aim is to retain as much
stone as feasible and the traditional
slate roof. The building is at the same
height as the original Hall retaining the
existing mass and blending into the
existing Corstorphine steetscape.
The new entrance extension is
lightweight glass and cladding panels
and designed to be a contemporary
lower separate element floating in front
of the solid austere Hall building.
West Context Elevation to Saughton Road North
North Context Elevation to Kirk Loan
This entrance will encourage local
access and provide a bright open
reception, meeting and breakout
space. The aim is to encourage use
and for the building to be an inclusive
meeting space within the community.
