Field Meet a Hit!
-Randall Fehr
The Lotus turnout at Bellevue
Community College was a
record-breaking 22 this year, with
four more in the for-sale lot.
Perhaps never before has there
been a more impressive display
of Lotus road cars in these parts,
and many spectators were
stunned to see so many in one
place. Nearly 400 British
vehicles were on display.
Many members who could
not bring a Lotus stopped by to
hob-nob. Mechanical details
were discussed, purchases
negotiated or lamented, and
ownership tales were told under
sunny skies. Especially
memorable were the Series 1
Elan owned by Naniamo resident
W.C. Rathlef since new, Guy
McDannald's S3 Elan in the
special 1967 display, and the
three mighty red Peter Stevensdesign Esprit Turbos side-byside.
Our special guest at the meet
was Mike Ostrov, ELCC member
and Club Elite president, who
flew in from the Bay Area for the
weekend. Mike graciously
presented a special award to the
winner of the Sevens & Early
Elites class.
Popular choice awards were
presented as follows:

Welcome new members Dave Billings with a Series 2 Elan in
restoration, and Alan Perry, just moved up from the Bay Area
with a Europa Special and a Series 2 Esprit. Alan established
the e-mail Lotus Cars mailing list several years ago, and has
been involved in the Golden Gate Lotus Club.
Phil Jones, Don Anderson and I ran our Lotuses hard at SIR
with the Corvette Marque Club on the 17th. We all made it
back home without help or lost pieces. Half of the track was
recently repaved with the result of faster lap times due to a
smoother and wider surface. Note that Club Lotus NW in
Portland will host a track day at PIR on Friday August 29,
preceeding the Portland All British Field Meet/Labor Day
weekend. Contact me for an entry form, or for more info call
Mark Viskov, 503-641-7693. Cost will be $60 per car.
The SOVREN vintage racing weekend was popular as ever.
Several members were involved in the racing, and a half dozen
Lotus road cars were on display each day in the Car Club
Corral.
The Labor Day Portland ABFM usually attracts many ELCC
members and as this time of the summer is crowded with
events of all kinds, we will not have a stand-alone ELCC
meeting. Next meet will be the Picnic & Photo Shoot at the
end of September - see separate article.
Mike and Brandy Galos have again offered to host our photo
contest meeting and party on Saturday, November 15th. All
photos submitted for the 1998 Calendar will be displayed and
members present will vote for those to be printed. More info
next issue.
Club officer elections will be held in December for the 199899 term. Jim Taylor has nominated himself for the Membership
office, and Craig Shuck has agreed to stand for re-election to
Treasurer. This leaves Newsletter Editor and Chairperson
positions open for nomination. Operators are standing by to
take your call at 206-463-2816 (Alice Larson).
Lined up for the parade lap at the SIR vintage races.

New Book Review
-Randall Fehr
The Lotus Europa, derivatives & contemporaries 1966-1975
An Enthusiast's Guide & Pictorial Review
by Paul Robinshaw & Dave Francis
R.B. Publications, England, 1997, 132 pp, about $35
Europa enthusiasts must continue to suffer the lack of an
informative book on the first mid-engine Lotus road car. One of
the co-authors of this new book was also co-author of the
excellent Original Lotus Elan and +2 , which makes this new
volume more disappointing as it lacks the thorough original
research, design analysis and restoration information the Elan
book has.
The Europa book contains reproductions of period press
releases, publicity photos and brochures, factory specifications,
and a few magazine road tests. There are very brief chapters
on models, Europas and other mid-engine Lotuses in racing,
aftermarket tuners, and chassis changing. While there are
many black-and-white photos and data tables, there is
relatively little explanatory text. For a modest book that can
claim little more than to provide basic information about the
Europa, it is a shame that so many factual errors appear such
as identifying the photo of a Series 2 as a Series 1, stating that
Europa Specials had 1.25in rear drum brakes (1.5in is correct),
giving incorrect location of the id plate, listing a ten year old
address for the ELCC, etc. And as with most British car books,
there is little or no reliable information on cars exported to the
US.
With that in mind, this book will still be of interest to Europa
owners, if only for the racing data and photos and the basic
(unreliable) factory-supplied specs and production milestones.
Those who saw Ron Hickman speak at the Monterey Lotus
Festival in 1995 know that there is a lot of interest to be told
about the design, development and history of the Europa. I still
look forward to a book that tells that story.

Classic Motorcar Rally
Port Townsend Sept 12-14
-Publicity
A narrow, twisting road weaves through the valley, a thin
stream of black-top separating fields, trees and rivers. The
colors of Indian Summer are reflected in the polished paint and
chrome, providing a kaleidoscope effect against the golds and
greens of the valley. The road swings up to run right along the
ridge-crest and other motorcars in British green, Italian red and
German silver are visible as they negotiate the near-by roads.
The snarl of a vintage DOHC six cylinder merges with the
cat-like howl of a four-cam V12. The sunny Dungeness Valley
and Washington's Olympic Peninsula have become the
playground of the Classic Motorcar Rally.
Using both Monte Carlo and time-speed-distance (TSD)
rallies, the weekend of driving will be a true sporting event.
Vintage Rally Association rules will be observed and
participants will be able to run a test route in order to familiarize
themselves with this rally method. Over 400 miles will be
covered, however each day of rallying will include regular
breaks for participant comfort and area sight-seeing.
The Victorian splendor of Port Townsend provides a home
base for the Classic Motorcar Rally. Manresa Castle, built as a
European chateau and home to a business magnate and later,
Jesuit priests, offers unique accommodations for rally
participants. All meals from evening banquets to picnic-site
boxed lunches are provided by the Manresa Castle's
Swiss-trained executive chef, Walter Santschi, C.E.C.
The Classic Motorcar Rally offers the camaraderie and
competition of fine sporting motorcars with the natural wonders
of Washington's Olympic Peninsula. All Rally proceeds benefit
the nonprofit College Planning Network, assisting people
seeking educational opportunities. For an unforgettable
weekend, please join us in Port Townsend this September.
The BMW Seattle Classic Motorcar Rally invites you to
apply for entry. Collector cars of the pre-emission era (1972 or
earlier) are desired however exceptions may be made for later
models in the spirit of the event. For on-line registration, visit
the rally Web site: www.collegeplan.org/rally.htm
Contact Douglas Breithaupt at 206-323-0624 or email:
[email protected] or check out their website at http://
www.collegeplan.org/rally.htm on the Internet. Cost is $450 for
the rally plus $75 per night for accomodations.
[Ed note: to date one ELCC member has signed up for the
rally in his Seven. Also, special guest on the rally and
Saturday banquet speaker will be respected collector car
market expert Keith Martin.
