The Department of Human Services and Consumer Sciences held their 12th
annual Childhood Obesity Conference November 18 in the Cecilia Scott
Lane Building on campus. This year’s theme was the “The Role of Added
Sugars in Obesity and Diabetes Among Children.”
Dr. Morgan –Bloom Higginbottom, a Department of Agriculture and
Human Sciences professor at Prairie View A&M, served as the guest speaker
for the conference. During her talk Dr. Higginbottom spoke to the audience
on the relationship among physical activity and obese or healthy children;
to educate children and parents about portion sizes; to encourage parents to
become good role models in their food selection as well as to provide their
children with ample opportunities for healthy food choices; and to raise
parents and students awareness about the quality of school lunches, etc.
Following Dr. Higginbottom’s address, a panel discussion followed featuring
Dr. Higginbottom, Dr. Dandy Levy-Collins, TSU Family and Consumer
Sciences professor, Dr. Judith Anglin, DDP Program Director, and Ms.
Tara Davis, Manager Community Initiatives and Volunteer Development

community –at-large with healthy
lifestyles; healthy food habits, and
ways to avoid childhood obesity,”
said Dr. Selina Ahmed, interim chair
Department of Human Services and
Consumer Sciences. “Our goal is to
reach out to the population who fell in
between the crack of statistics and are
the victims of health inequality and
health disparity.”

Student Military Veterans Honored During Veterans Week
“TSU gave me an opportunity to play football and get my education,” Fulghum
said. “In athletics, you face adversity, learn team work and develop a strong
and focused work ethic. You also get a drive from playing sports that you can’t
get anywhere else. I carry those traits with me to work every day, and that has
a lot to do with my success so far.”
The 2010 TSU graduate experienced a lot of success during his time as a Tiger.
He majored in accounting as an undergrad where he maintained a 3.2 grade
point average while starting all four years as a linebacker on the TSU football
team. During his senior year, he captained the #1 ranked FCS defense in the
nation and earned several
accolades including SWAC
Defensive Player of the Year,
SBN Player of the Year, The
Pigskin Club SWAC Defensive
player of the Year, and SBN
First Team All-American.
His performance on the
football field earned him a shot
in the NFL with the Detroit
Lions. He was released at the
end of training camp, but that
was not the end for Fulghum.
Dejuan Fulghum #44
SWAC 2010 Defensive Player of theYear
“My goal was to play
professional football but I always had my education to fall back on,” Fulghum
said. “I’m thankful that TSU allowed me to return as a graduate assistant so I
could earn my masters.”
He earned his master’s degree in business and used hard work, determination
and drive to enter the corporate world. “You have to have a plan and prepare
yourself because you never know when an opportunity will come your way,”
stated Fulghum. “I would encourage students today to have a plan before you
graduate and start networking early, that’s very important. If you plan for
success and work hard, odds are you will reach your goal.”
