Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences signs
affiliation agreement with TSU’s Administration of
Justice Department
Department
The
of Administration of Justice within the Barbara Jordan-Mickey Leland
School of Public Affairs at Texas Southern University recently signed an Affiliation Agreement
allowing the students within the department to intern with the Harris County Institute of
Forensic Sciences (HCIFS).
Dr. Sharlette Kellum-Gilbert, Department of Administration of Justice asssociate professor
and internship coordinator, followed through with the TSU legal counsel and the legal counsel
of the HCIFS to obtain the Affiliation Agreement. Harris County Judge Ed Emmett, Harris
County Attorney Vince Ryan, and Executive Director & Chief Medical Examiner, Luis A.
Sanchez, M.D. signed the official documents March 8, 2016
Students in the Department of Administration of Justice will be able to serve in various
departments under the direction of the Chief Medical Examiner. Some of the departments
include: Crime Laboratory, Forensic Investigations, Victim's Assistance, and Legal Counsel.
United States Air Force Airmen of Note to perform at
Texas Southern University
The Airmen of Note, the premier jazz ensemble of the United
States Air Force, will perform a free, family-friendly concert
Sunday, April 24, at 4:00 p.m. in Texas Southern University’s
Sawyer Auditorium.
The Airmen of Note is one of six musical ensembles that
comprise The U.S. Air Force Band. The current band consists of
18 active duty Airmen musicians including one vocalist.
Their commitment to musical excellence has earned the respect of
the foremost jazz artists from around the globe, leading to many
collaborative performances and recordings with such luminaries as
TSU alumnus and Grammy award winning saxophonist Kirk
Whalum, Dizzy Gillespie, Joe Williams, Sarah Vaughan and Doc

Come out April 9 to meet new KTSU GM Ernest Walker
KTSU 90.9 FM will host an open house and meet and greet reception for its new General
Manager Ernest Walker, Saturday, April 9, from 10:00 a.m. to noon. It will be held in the
KTSU multi-purpose room and everyone is invited.
Walker, a music industry veteran with more than 20 years of experience in business,
production, entertainment, and fundraising was named general manager March 10. Breakfast
will be provided by The Breakfast Klub.

As part of The U.S. Air Force Band, The Airmen of Note
honors those who have served, inspires American citizens to
heightened patriotism and service, and positively impacts the
global community on behalf of the U.S. Air Force and the
United States. The excellence demonstrated by these Airmen
musicians is a reflection of the excellence displayed by
Airmen stationed around the globe. Each member is proud to
represent all Airmen, whose selfless service and sacrifices
ensure the freedoms we enjoy as citizens of the United States
of America.

Medical Education Conference

Texas Southern University’s chapter of Student National Medical Association
(SNMA) Minority Association of Pre-Medical Students (M.A.P.S.) attended the 52nd
annual Medical Education Conference for the second time March 23-27, in Austin.
TSU’s M.A.P.S. chapter was able fully fund 15 students’ travel, registration and hotel
costs thanks to the support of Texas Southern University’s faculty. Attendees were
exposed to diverse career opportunities, network with medical representatives, and build
professional and academic skills.
SNMA was founded in 1964 as a sub-division of the National Medical Association
after recognizing the need to give active support to medical students and encourage
them in their pursuit of careers as physicians.
M.A.P.S. represent the undergraduate and graduate student-run chapters that extend
the mission of SNMA and NMA: increasing the number of African-American, Latino,
and other students of color entering and completing health professional schools.
This event included many schools such as Northwestern Medical School, UT
Houston, Meharry Medical School, Howard Medical School, Harvard Medical School
just to name a few.

dynamic panel, will partner with the Texas Southern University Collegiate
100 chapter to host an informative and candid discussion on generational
curses, colorism & standards of beauty, and the destruction of the Black family
unit in the Reverse The Curse: Moving The Culture Forward seminar.
Panelist include: Pastor Terrance Johnson, Higher Dimension Church; Anthony
“AV” Valary, Minister/radio personality and producer; Marvin Pierre, speaker/KIPP
Polaris Academy for Boys assistant principal; Holly Charles, author/speaker; Judge
Hazel Jones, 174th Criminal Court; Kim Floyd, vice president of D-Mars Business
Journal; and Jillian Simmons, radio personality/author/philanthropist.
