Rain may have slowed tailgating during Homecoming 2015, but it didn’t stop the party. Homecoming 2015 – 88 The Roar is Great A First and Goal Celebration – was filled with many exciting activities. The week began October 20 on a do good note with the Arbor Day Celebration and announcement of TSU as the Home Depot Re-Tool Your School winner. Volunteers helped plant plants at several locations around campus to further beautify the campus. The next day, October 21, faculty and staff put on their serving aprons and served students lunch on the plaza for a Student Appreciation luncheon. Later that night alumni challenged students to a game night in the Student Center Game Room. The Tiger Paw Golf Classic and Fashion Show/Day Party October 22was the prelude before alumni gathered in the Sheraton Galleria for the Alumni Welcome Reception and students gathered in the Student Center for the Grand Casino Tiger Royale. The ribbon cutting ceremony and Open House. Campus was filled with activity as visitors, alumni and students all enjoyed the Yard Festival. Later that night, memories of past athletic fetes were relived in the H&PE Arena as TSU paid tribute to its former Tigers who had careers in the National Football League. Tigers in the NFL – A First and Goal Celebration brought back 29 former standout football athletes. Each man, honored one-by-one for their contribution both to the NFL and to Texas Southern University, was given a customized Tigers in the NFL blazer and medallion. The parade went on as scheduled despite the threat of rain. Once the game kickedoff against Southern University the rain began and did not let up. However, allday rain did not stop Coca-Cola from presenting a mock check for $100,000 to Texas Southern University to support First Generation Scholarships. Despite a valiant first half effort the Tigers lost to the Jaguars 40-21 in a rain-soaked game at BBVA Stadium. Tailgating resumed for some following the football game. Heads were held high, memories of past athletic fetes were relived, and a youthful spirit was reinvigorated on Friday, October 23, 2015 in the H&PE Arena on Texas Southern University’s campus as TSU paid tribute to its former Tigers who had careers in the National Football League. The funds represent $50,000 from Coca-Cola with a $50,000 match from the university. These funds will support the great initiatives that enhance the lives of TSU students. An ecstatic Ware states, “TSU has been very instrumental in my career, and I'm thankful for all the assistance and guidance from all my wonderful professors and administrators at one of the greatest institutions in the world.” Ware, from TSU’s School of Communication, interned for the New York Times, Houston Chronicle, and BET Networks while a student at TSU. Ware recently worked as a Digital Media Content Producer for KHOU-TV and continues to host his own Web series, Late Nights, Early Mornings. Similar sentiments were shared by Hill’s fellow honorees as they were recognized by their alma mater in front of their families, friends, fans, alumni, former teammates and current TSU faculty, staff and students for their contribution to the legacy of TSU athletics. “Being honored and receiving this jacket and medal means a lot to me because it tells me that all the hard work that I’ve done throughout high school, college and in the pros is respected, said Mike Holmes, a former San Francisco 49ers safety. “To be honored by TSU touches my heart.” United States Congresswoman Shelia Jackson Lee (D-18th District) presented the honorees with a certificate and a replica of House Resolution 489 commemorating the 88th anniversary of Texas Southern University. Tony Wyllie, TSU alum and current senior vice president of communications for the Washington Redskins, served as the master of ceremony. Michael Strahan, Brett Maxie, and Cortez Hankton – all former TSU football standouts who also were stars in the NFL - were not able to attend due to scheduling conflicts, but sent congratulatory video messages. Ernie Holmes and James Ford were honored posthumously and family members accepted their awards. Earnest Walker, Montina Cooper, Kyle Turner, and Werner Richmond provided musical entertainment for the event. Honorees served as Grand Marshals for the Grand Tiger Parade on Saturday, October 24 and were recognized during a preHomecoming game ceremony where the TSU Tigers battled the Southern University Jaguars, but lost the contest, 40-21 in a rainsoaked game at BBVA Stadium. Maroon and Grey Club Makes $10,000 Donation The Texas Southern University Department of Athletic has announced that the Maroon and Grey club has donated $10,000 to the newly initiated “All In” season tickets campaign. The campaign which is chaired by TSU Assistant Director of Athletics Kevin Granger was established to increase the number of season ticket holders for the athletics program to 5,000. “We’re very excited about the generous donation made by the Maroon and Grey club in the amount of $10, 000,” said Granger. “This is the largest donation we’ve received thus far and it will go a long way towards helping us institute plans and initiatives that will help increase our season tickets base to over 5,000 members.” For more information about the campaign or to make a donation please call (713) 313-4355 or visit www.tsusports.com. 23rd Annual Southwestern Business Administration Teaching Conference October 29 – 30, 2015 The annual Southwestern Business Administration Teaching Conference will be held in the Jesse H. Jones School of Business October 29 – 30, 2015. On Thursday, October 29, the conference will be from 9:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. There are four parallel sessions throughout the first day covering topics ranging from pedagogy, online education, teaching accounting topics and student learning aspects. Cengage Learning will be making a presentation. On Friday, October 30, the conference will be from 9:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. There will be three parallel sessions covering topics related to student learning, use of technology and online education. JHJ is hosting a reception for all attendees on campus in the President’s Lounge of the Student Center from 5:30 to 8:00 p.m. on October 29, 2015.
