KTSU’s line-up, beginning at left, includes: Kim Burrell, Zoe Bonet, Noel Velasquez Val Wilson,

Texas Southern University Vice President for University Advancement Eva K. Pickens and
KTSU Radio 90.9 FM General Manager Ernest Walker are announcing a new schedule line up,
new shows and hosts at the university’s radio station. TSU students will have significant roles
as hosts and interns at several levels at the campus radio station. The enhanced schedule and
programming will begin on Monday, May 2.
KTSU 90.9 FM will remain Houston’s station for Jazz and continue to feature R&B Oldies,
Blues, Gospel, Zydeco, Neo-Soul and Hip-Hop as well as a source for balanced coverage of
current news, features and events.
TSU students Kris Walker, with his show After Hours Praise Party (Monday’s, 2AM –
5AM); and Noel Velasquez, with his show Fiesta Nights (Thursday’s 6PM – 10PM) will lead

student involvement as hosts of their own show. Numerous other students will be involved in
the research and production of various news and music segments as well as community
outreach.

“Excellence in Achievement” celebrated during
annual Honors Day Convocation
3,134 Texas Southern University honors students, their parents, friends and families convened
in the H&PE Arena April 27, to be recognized by the university for their 2015 Spring and Fall
semester academic achievements. Students named to the Presidents List (3.75-4.0 GPA), Deans
List (3.5-4.0 GPA ), University Honor Roll (3.0-4.0 GPA), and 4.0 Grade Point Average (4.0
GPA) received a medallion
A special subset of 19 students - those who earned perfect 4.0 GPAs for both the Spring and
Fall semesters, were called on stage to receive a plaque and acknowledgement from their
respective deans, the provost and university president. Those students, pictured from left, were,
Reynoil White, Natacha Ngantcha, Priscilla Franks, Ashanti Phelps, Cierra Griffin, Allison
Flores, and Ludim Alvarado.

KTSU-FM surpassed goal during
Spring campaign
Listeners helped TSU’s
popular radio station,
KTSU-FM 90.9, reach its
membership campaign
goal this year of $150,000
by surpassing that goal by
nearly $10,000 – and
counting. The campaign,
designed to assure
outreach to the
community as well as to
increase membership and
diversity, began April 22,
and officially ended on
Sunday evening May 1.
The station wishes to
thank all new and
renewing members,
volunteers, including
those who visited the station to personally donate and
pitch on-air. A more detailed report is forth coming.
KTSU staff and volunteers will utilize this week to tieup loose ends, but wish to invite others to continue to
sign up throughout the year and to please stay tuned to

Dr. Clyde E. Duncan, Jr. named
Professor of the Year by University
Program Council
The University Program Council
(UPC) named School of
Communication professor, Dr.
Clyde E. Duncan, Jr. as Professor
of the Year at its Tiger Choice
Awards held April 14, in Sawyer
Auditorium.
Duncan, along with another
School of Communication
professor, Dr. Dominic Thomas, and a Department of
Health Sciences professor, Dr. Monica Rasmus, were
nominated for the honor.
“I truly appreciate winning this award,” said
Duncan. “This is what it’s all about. I learn just as
much from my students as they learn from me, so to
be recognized as the UPC Professor of the Year is an
honor I won’t soon forget.”
“Dr. Duncan has done and continues to do an
outstanding job with the students,” Thomas said of his
colleague. “I'm just excited about the fact that two
professors from the School of Communication were
nominated. The fact that the students chose the
nominees and voted means even more," said Thomas.
The UPC chose the nominees from over 300 faculty
members on campus

Dr. Clyde E. Duncan Jr. served as the Master of Ceremonies. Dr. Dominic

TSUPD’s effort’s assists Harris
County Homicide Detectives with
active unsolved double homicide case
Recently, Officer Benjamin Huseman with the Texas
Southern University Police Department noticed a vehicle
traveling on Cleburne driving in a reckless manner. After
initiating a traffic stop on the vehicle, two males fled the
vehicle and ran inside of the Cuney Homes Housing Complex.
After a call for assistance, Officer DeMon Callier,
Investigator Willie Williams and soon to be Sgt. Elizabeth
Castillo arrived to the scene to assist Officer Huseman. While
assisting, it was found that the vehicle stopped belonged to a
male that was recently found murdered in his home.
The fleeing suspects got away on foot. However, Castillo
and the team made contact with one of the suspect’s mother,
who would give them valuable information about the unsolved
murders of the man and his daughter who were both murdered
in their home on Larchwood in east Harris County. Castillo
recorded the mother reading text messages of her son
confessing to her about committing the murder.
The lead Harris County Sheriff’s Office Homicide Detective
was contacted and repeatedly expressed his gratitude to the
TSUPD for the excellent job and professionalism they
displayed. He stated that they had no leads on the case and
thanks to TSUPD, Harris County has their suspects, who
should be captured soon and brought to justice.
Texas Southern University was the site where hundreds of KHCB 1400 AM Radio
supporters gathered for the Festival de la Amistad, which means festival of
friendship. The crowd enjoyed music, dancing, food and many other festivities as the
Hispanic Christian Radio celebrated 25 years of broadcasting in the Houston area.

Also added to the line-up are names most listeners are
familiar with, including multiple Grammy award nominee and
Dove & Stellar award winner Kim Burrell, who will host her
own show Bridging the Gap with Kim Burrell on Sunday’s
from 1:00 p.m. – 3:00 p.m. starting Sunday, June 5.
New shows added to the Monday through Thursday line-up
are: Mornings with Mike and Val, Jazz by Design and Jazz
Gems.
Mike Caviel and TSU communications professor Val
Wilson, radio veterans, will host Mornings with Mike and Val
Show from 6:00 a.m. – 10:00 a.m. The show will feature
contemporary, smooth and fusion jazz along with R&B music
as well as Caviel and Wilson’s candid delivery of the
morning’s local news, features and information.
Donna Franklin will follow with, Jazz by Design from
10:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. that will offer listeners smooth and
contemporary jazz and featured “CD” debuts.
Zoe Bonet, formerly of Sunny 99.1, will make her debut at
KTSU with Jazz Gems from 2:00 p.m. – 6:00 p.m. Listeners
will enjoy a blend of smooth and contemporary jazz.
Other new shows include: The Blend – Monday’s, 10PM 2AM with Freddie Brown featuring a mixture of Jazz and
Blues; The Blend – Tuesday’s, 10PM – 2AM with Deon
Haywood featuring a mix of Jazz and R&B; The Blend –
Wednesday’s, 10PM – 2PM with Ms. Melodic (Melanie
Murphy) featuring a mixture of Jazz and Neo Soul;
Throwback Jams - Friday’s, 10PM – 2AM with Maxie T
(Maxie Tarver) and Chop Star Jimmy (Jimmy Jones)
featuring Classic Hip Hop from the 70’s-90’s; and Classic
R&B Countdown – Saturday’s, 9AM – 10AM with Tyrone
Dubose featuring a syndicated show highlighting R&B Oldies.
To diversify its sound, KTSU 90.9 has added a Latin and
Caribbean flair to its lineup. Thursday night shows will now
include Fiesta Nights with host Noel Velasquez from 6:00
p.m. – 10:00 p.m., followed by Caribbean Vibes with hosts
DJ’s Supa Neil (Everad Gill) and Uncle L (Leigh Johnson)
from 10:00 p.m. – 2:00 a.m. Fiesta Nights will feature a
mixture of Latin Jazz and other Latin sounds while Caribbean
Vibes will offer listeners Caribbean music as well as news and
information from the Caribbean world.
Sheldon T. Nunn, KTSU’s veteran Jazz aficionado, gets a
promotion as Music Director/Director of Community
Engagement. Additional changes Walker has made since
taking over as General Manger March 22, include radio
personality Donna Franklin as Program Director.
The Gentle Giant (James Eaglin) host of the popular
Golden Oldies; and ChattaBox (Lary Hale) of Classic Café
will remain on Fridays at their regular time slots, 6AM –
10AM and 10AM – 2PM, respectively.
Dr. Chris Ulassi, chair, TSU Radio, Television and Film
department in the School of Communication, will work in
concert with KTSU to assist with student involvement in all
aspects of radio, including teaching/learning and community
interest. He loves the idea of a program that is a combination
of music and current events.
“I feel that such a program will be of interest to a large
audience because many people are not given the opportunity to
talk about issues that are important to them,” Ulassi says.
Dr. Ulassi invited the students and KTSU to have a huge
presence at this year’s Houston Igbo Festival, slated for July.
