Organizational Orientation
The TSU student chapter of Intelligent Transportation Society was founded in June 10, 2010. As
the student chapter of ITS Texas, the primary objectives of this chapter are to: 1) boost students’
knowledge and research in Intelligent Transportation Systems; 2) enlarge students’ vision in the
application of advanced technologies in ITS; 3) build up a plat-form for students at TSU to join
in Intelligent Transportation Society of America; 4) give students interested in ITS access to
interacting with the professionals in the ITS- related transportation field; 5) provide maximum
resources for students to attend the ITS-related conferences; and 6) create opportunities for ITS
TSU members to be involved in campus events proactively.

Academic Activities
Attending 2011 ITS Texas Annual Meeting
On November 2011, ITS TSU Student chapter members Polina Korzhova and Liu attended the
2011 ITS Texas Annual in San Marcus, TX. One student member (Peina Yuan) received one of
the Intelligent Transportation Society (ITS) Texas Scholarships during this meeting. Miss Yuan
was not able to attend this ceremony in person since she just gave birth to her new baby two days
before the event. This is the second time that TSU students received such awards. The first one
received this award was Miss Huimin Xing, the 2010-2011 president of ITS TSU Student
Chapter.

During January 22-26, 2012, most of the chapter members traveled to Washington D.C. to attend
the 91st Transportation Research Board (TRB) annual meeting. During the four-day long period,
the ITS TSU members actively participated in a variety of workshops and sessions to learn the
latest development in Intelligent Transportation Systems. They also visited the exhibition hall to
watch various demonstrations of ITS-related products and showcases and get in direct touch with
industry entities. Proudly, several members were invited to make presentations in TRB annual
meeting.

Attending the 15th IEEE Intelligent Transportation Society Conference
During September 15-20, 2012, the 15th IEEE Intelligent Transportation Society conference was
held in Anchorage, Alaska. Dr. Fengxiang Qiao, the advisor of ITS TSU student chapter, was
invited to make two oral presentations in this conference and two papers were published in the
conference proceedings. Three student members Jinghui Wang, Xiaobing Wang and Jin Jia
co-authored one of the papers. During the five-day long period, the chapter members actively
participated in a variety of workshops and sessions to learn about the state-of-the-art/practice of
ITS technologies. This was really a treasured opportunity for our student members to extend
their knowledge and network with professionals throughout the world.

Social Activities
During the report period, the Chapter students not only dedicated themselves to the academic
studies, but also positively participated in various campus events and dispersed our passion to the
local community.
Lantern Festival Party on Campus
Lantern festival is a festival celebrated on the fifteenth day of the first month of the Lunisolar
new year. Children and young people normally go out at night to temples carrying paper lanterns
and solve the riddles on lanterns during the traditional Lantern Festival. In Feb. 2012, the TSU
Chinese Students & Scholars Association (CSSA) along with ITS TSU hosted a Lantern Festival
party on campus to celebrate this traditional annual Asian festival. Most of the ITS TSU
members participated in this event. Solo, Chorus, electric organ performance, and sketches were
performed in the party.

Conclusion
The Intelligent Transportation Society (ITS) Student Chapter at TSU has been founded for two
years. As part of the Texas chapter of Intelligent Transportation Society of America (ITS
America), this chapter has hosted and actively participated in many kinds of academic and social
activities during the past year, illustrating an efficient effort in the study of ITS - related
transportation knowledge, and the dedication to inside and outside campus communities.
Within ITS TSU as a healthy and vigorous platform, students have been provided a lot of
opportunities to stretch their career interests to ITS-related fields and extend their networks to the
government officials and transportation professionals. In the future, even more endeavors will be
conducted to better achieve the organization’s goals: to promote the advancement and integration
of intelligent transportation systems by fostering the close association of students with the
greater transportation profession and ITS Texas; to acquaint students with topics of interests
within the intelligent transportation arena; to promote common interests among students; and to
encourage the development and enhancement of intelligent transportation systems studies.
Acknowledgement
The TSU student chapter sincerely appreciates the strong guidance, continuous support and kind
encouragement from ITS Texas.
