Christmas Madrigal Dinner Show
Presented by the Pius X Vocal Department
During the weekend of December 13-14, the Pius X Vocal Department hosted a Madrigal dinner with three performances at
St. Patrick parish. The Christmas show and celebration showcased the choirs in a festive display of music and entertainment
honoring the birth of Christ. The interactive dinner theater event
featured a three-course meal with a Wassail Toast, trumpet fanfares, skits, and students’ musical talent.
A Madrigal Dinner is a twenty-first-century re-creation of the
Renaissance feasts held in the great baronial halls throughout
England during the Twelve Days of Christmas. If you were living in England during the sixteenth century and were lucky
enough to be a favored guest of the feast, you would be dazzled
with stunning pageantry, bawdy humor, endless amounts of succulent foods, and extraordinary music and singing. The line between sacred and secular would be thinly drawn. One moment
you might be regaled with fun humor and the next you might
listen to, or sing, the most exquisite and ethereal sacred music.
The philosophy of the Pius X choral program is to give students
a deeper appreciation of choral music and to develop intellectual, physical, creative, aesthetic, and social skills. It currently has
255 students in five choirs:

Pius Singers is the all-freshman choir.

Resonance is a general mixed choir with students
in grades 10 to 12.

Cantabella is an all-female choir that specializes in
four-part treble harmony.

Sotto Voce ensemble focuses on small chamber a
cappella music.

Spectrum is the Pius X show choir that competes in
the spring at various competitions in Nebraska.

A total of 43 Pius X seniors joined 10 David City-Aquinas seniors and almost 10,000 other young Catholics in Nashville, Tennessee for the national SEEK2015 conference. SEEK is a catholic conference sponsored by FOCUS – the Fellowship of Catholic University Students. This 5-day event featured nationally
known speakers, such as Chris Stefanick, Matt Fradd, Leah Darrow, Pat Lencioni, Jason Evert, and many more. Evening entertainment included a “SEEK Stampede” with live country music,
and performances by Matt Maher and comedian Jim Gaffigan.
Each day of the conference included Mass, separate men’s and
women’s talks, impact sessions, and a keynote speaker in the
evening.
The highlight of the whole conference was Saturday night adoration and confessions. For over two and a half hours, young
adults from all over the country and world adored our Lord in
the Blessed Sacrament. During that time, Jesus was processed
throughout the whole conference room, students knelt, sat, and
laid on a hard concrete floor or spent over an hour waiting in the
confession line to receive the sacrament from 1 of the 300
priests available. The music, the experience and the grace of our
Lord brought many to tears and even more to a deeper conversion. It was beautiful!
Our students came back to Pius X with a renewed zeal and excitement for the faith. This was an event unlike any other they
had ever experienced. A special thank you to all who made this
possible. Specifically, thank you to those who donated money
for scholarships and fees, to all who prayed for us while on this
journey, to all the chaperones and leaders, and especially to the
parents who have supported and encouraged our students on
their faith journey. None of this would have been possible without your generosity and support.

Keeping with an important
and special Pius X tradition, the sophomore class
participated in their annual
retreat day on Tuesday,
January 6. The girls and
boys had separate retreats
but both included prayer,
Mass, adoration, the sacrament of Reconciliation, and
various talks on respecting
God, self, and others.
At the sophomore girls
retreat, “You Were Made
for Better Things,” students
heard talks from Fr. Steve
Mills, a sophomore theology teacher at Pius X, Annette Kunzman, who teaches and works in the technology department, and
Sophia Werning, mother of
two students at Pius X. The
ladies also asked questions
to a panel of college students about living the faith.
The boys’ retreat, “Made
for More,” included talks
from John Sullivan, Todd
Krier, our choir director at
Pius X, and Chris Raun,
parishioner at St. Joseph’s
and active parent volunteer
at Pius X.

Thank you to all our speakers, faculty volunteers,
small group leaders, those
who were able to donate
money or snacks, and to all
who prayed for the success
of the retreat. Thank you
also to St. Joseph’s Church
and the John XXIII Center
for hosting our retreats. It
was another successful day.

Matching Gifts Provide Significant Funding for Pius X
Matching gifts allow you to double or even triple the impact of your gift through the help of your
employer. Matching gifts made last year to the Fund for Pius X, Pius X High School, Booster
Club, BOLT, and/or the Pius X Foundation provided more than $45,000 in additional funding.
If you or your spouse are employed by a matching gift company, your gift could be worth more
than you think. Please check with your personnel office to find out if your employer or your
spouse’s employer offers a matching gift program. If a matching gift is an option, please enclose a
completed matching gift form with your personal gift remittance and we’ll do the rest!
Every gift, no matter the amount, is vital to the long term, financial stability of Pius X High School
and our ability to keep tuition affordable for every family. Contact your Human Resources Department for a matching gift form today.
If you need additional information or assistance, please contact the Pius X Foundation at (402)
488-1046 or email Michelle Birkel at [email protected].

Ways to Boost Fiber
Fiber is an essential nutrient. However, most Americans are falling far short of the recommended daily amount in their diets.
Women should aim for 25 grams of fiber per day while men
should target 38 grams (or 21 and 30 grams daily, respectively,
for those over 51).
Dietary fiber contributes to our health and wellness:

It
aids in providing fullness after meals which helps promote
healthy weight.

It can help to lower cholesterol.

It helps prevent constipation and diverticulosis.

It helps keep blood sugar within a healthy range.
Eating the skin or peel of fruits and vegetables provides a greater
dose of fiber which is found naturally in these sources. Fiber is
also found in beans and lentils, whole grains, nuts and seeds.
Typically, the more refined or processed a food becomes, the
lower its fiber content. For example, one medium apple with the
peel contains 4.4 grams of fiber, while ½ cup of applesauce contains 1.4 grams, and 4 ounces of apple juice contains none at all.
With a few simple and tasty substitutions, you can increase your
fiber from foods in no time. For breakfast, choose steel cut oats
with nuts and berries instead of a plain, refined cereal. At lunch,
have a sandwich or wrap on a whole grain tortilla or whole
grain bread and add veggies, such as lettuce or tomato, or serve
with veggie soup. For a snack, have fresh veggies or whole-grain
crackers with hummus. With dinner, try brown rice or whole
grain noodles instead of white rice or pasta made with white
flour.
Here are a few whole foods that are naturally high in fiber:
1 large pear with skin – 7 grams
1 cup fresh raspberries – 8 grams
½ medium avocado – 5 grams
1 ounce almonds – 3.5 grams
1/3 cup cooked black beans – 7.5 grams
3 cups air-popped popcorn – 3.6 grams
1 cup cooked barley – 6 grams
When increasing fiber, be sure to do it gradually and with plenty
of fluids. Fiber in your diet is similar to a sponge as it needs water to plump it up. If you consume more than your usual intake
of fiber but not enough fluid, you may experience nausea or constipation.
Before your reach for the fiber supplements, consider this: fiber
is found naturally in nutritious, whole foods. Studies have found
the same benefits such as the feeling of fullness may not result
from fiber supplements or from fiber-enriched foods. If you’re
missing out on your daily amount of fiber, you may be trailing in
other essential nutrients as well. Your fiber intake is a good
gauge for overall diet quality. Try to reach your fiber goal with
whole foods so you get all the other benefits they provide.

A “TINI” Fact
Our taste buds can perceive only four basic tastes: sweet, salty,
sour and bitter. The essence of great cooking is to bring these
four tastes into balanced harmony to create deliciousness. It’s
that simple and that difficult.
