SMALL WONDERS DOLL from from the the director director Each time I pass the Changing Gallery, which now fairly drips with the lusciousness of lace, I ponder how many people who would love to experience this display will, unfortunately, miss seeing it. Even though there have been four months to visit and still there will be a few more weeks by the time this reaches you, it is not enough time for some to take the time to come. This is one of the reasons this coming year we will be extending our Changing Gallery exhibits and offering two annually instead of three. The importance of the upcoming exhibit, “Jules Steiner-The Great Innovator”, is another reason. Many years ago when Susan Hedrick was our Curator, she made the simple statement to me “You REALLY love Steiners!” Caught somewhat by surprise, I said “What makes you say that? I don’t have that many Steiners.” To which challenge she presented a computer listing the length of my arm- all Steiners in my collection. I must admit I had not realized how enthralled I was with these dolls and upon reviewing the list I soon saw what hadn’t been evident to me; the great diversity of dolls Jules Nicolas Steiner had produced during the Golden Age of French doll making. He was The Great Innovator. Though his dolls were among the most beautiful, it is Continued on Page 2... PAGE ONE from the director ...Continued From Page 1 true, they were also dolls that had secret-eyes that opened and closed long before the weighted sleep eyes from a later time, dolls that danced, dolls that walked, dolls with teeth, and all this from the mid eighteen hundreds. Tiny Lever Eyed Steiner Series C with trunk and wardrobe, c1885 Bisque, composition. These were dolls that were meant to be played with by children. Can you imagine a child experiencing a doll with such amazing capabilities for the first time? And the clothes! They must be seen in person to be appreciated. BLONDINE alone could fill our gallery and it would be complete. Her wardrobe, the materials, the embellishments, the accoutrements, defy today’s definitions in their rarity. See Page Three for even more exciting news to go with our upcoming exhibit! “COMING OF AGE”, our theme of celebration for the MUSEUM’S 18th BIRTHDAY, offered the opportunity for a lot of frivolity this last September 18th. We thank the many new friends, members, “old” friends, staff and families, docents, and even a dog who all came and helped us celebrate, also taking advantage of some wonderful sale prices at the Museum Store and Rosie’s Too (well, maybe not the dog). See below and Page Six for photos from this year’s birthday celebration. More times than I can count over the last 18 years, I have been asked by visitors and friends “What is your favorite doll?” Many of you have heard me answer “The one I’m holding”. So, I thought I would turn the tables on you all since 18 is the traditional age of voting for the first time and we have been asking our visitors since September 1st “What is YOUR favorite doll (or toy) in the Museum?” Many voted and you can find our somewhat surprising results on Page Four, “Spotlight In the Gallery”. Just remember, I know more than all of you just how difficult it is to answer this one! We sent home some happy winners with our door prizes and some lucky shoppers with the “Dolly Dollars” we handed out. UNCLE SAM on our cake impressed everyone as did the 30” Simon and Halbig UNCLE SAM on display in Hmmm...which doorprize do I want? They celebrated our birthday with “friends”. A special 9 year old boy told his mother he knew he would win the Grand Door Prize- a Sonja Henie doll & her wardrobe- & he did! SMALL WONDERS ...Continued From Page 1 “gallery walk” to highlight the many Steiner dolls on exhibit in the Museum. See details on Page Three of this newsletter. If ever you’ve wanted to learn more about Jules Nicolas Steiner and his charming and inventive dolls, this is your opportunity! Jill Gorman Curator the admissions area. We also celebrated RAGGEDY ANN AND ANDY’S 95th BIRTHDAY with a display of a wide variety of them and MARCELLA and friends. Some things just remain eternally endearing. The PLAYROOM was strangely quiet though it was filled to the brim with kids and their families busily creating clothespin and rag dolls, cutting out paperdolls, coloring Uncle Sam and the Raggedys, fashioning lavish doll hairstyles, and dressing dolls. Please enjoy the photos snapped during the festivities. We hope you see yourself on Page Six and, if not, we hope to see you here soon. Rosalie Whyel, Director Museum Day September 25th was Smithsonian Museum Day and we were honored to have had 104 visitors here at our Museum! That is more than last year and marks the 6th annual Museum Day. Most were first time visitors, but there were a few return visitors, too. Be sure to make every day Museum Day and go out into your community and see what we have to offer! PAGE TWO From the Museum Store... A Treasure c1870 24” Early Meiji Era Mitsuore-type Japanese baby. We are excited to announce the winner of our “What is your favorite doll or toy?” survey. It was exciting to count the votes and we thank all of you who took the time and gave this tough question some serious thought. While your tastes ran the gamut of the collection, some clearly stood out above the rest. The number one favorite is actually a grouping, “The Gambling Dogs” Dogs”! Hurray! Who among us doesn’t relate (especially in this These dogs are set! Including “root” beer, golf clubs, cigars, & an ace up the sleeve for a few of them! dog-loving community) to dogs acting up. Of course, this modern artist scene created by Pat Thompson in the late 1980s, is based on the very popular print or prints, as there were around 20 different ones, created back in the 1920s. Many of us have seen these hanging in homes when we were kids or now still available in antique shops. Certainly they cross the barrier of CROSSROADS DOLL & TEDDY BEAR SHOW & SALE* Puyallup Fairgrounds Puyallup WA Saturday October 16, 2010 10am - 4:30pm Sunday October 17, 2010 10am - 4pm ANTIQUE & COLLECTIBLE DOLL MARKET Lake City Community Center Seattle WA Saturday October 30, 2010 10am - 3pm SMALL WONDERS gender and age appealing to many of us. The “Dogs” barely edged past our historic, but not official, favorite, “The African Madonna” by artist Helen Kish. She called this piece the “Universal Madonna” when I told her how popular it was with our visitors. I believe the thought of a mother alone with a child and a baby touches a special place in our hearts, especially in these days when we see so much about the plight of mothers and children in many war torn or underprivileged countries. However, The Madonna ended up tying with our ever-popular mischief maker whom we affectionately call “Katie Bird”, the “Jumeau with the Trousseau” rousseau”. Now a name appears in her little memory book –“Hattie Bird”so one might wonder why we call her Katie Bird, and that would be a part of a very long story involving this doll with a strange aura and stranger “habits”. Let’s just say we keep an eye on her red velvet box with her wedding ring set and see which way it is turned from day to day....
