FPO short cut die line • About diabetes Redefining pet diabetes management What is diabetes? Lack of insulin Glucose cannot be used by cells for energy Glucose builds up in the blood FPO short cut die line Leads to signs associated with diabetes • About diabetes Redefining pet diabetes management Page title: What happens in a non-diabetic pet. • The pet’s food is converted into glucose. • Glucose travels through the bloodstream to cells throughout the body. • Insulin allows glucose to enter cells where it is used as fuel. • This is the same process that occurs in the human body. FPO short cut die line • About diabetes Redefining pet diabetes management What happens in a non-diabetic pet. FPO short cut die line • About diabetes Redefining pet diabetes management Page title: What happens in a diabetic pet. • Glucose is unable to enter the cells. • Some common reasons for this are: • The pancreas does not produce enough insulin. (This occurs in type 1 diabetes—most common in dogs.) • The body’s cells build up a resistance to insulin, making it more difficult for cells to get the glucose they need for energy. (This occurs in type 2 diabetes—most common in cats.) • Glucose builds up in the bloodstream and leads to signs associated with diabetes. FPO short cut die line • About diabetes Redefining pet diabetes management What happens in a diabetic pet. As in humans, there is more than one type of diabetes in pets: • Type 1 diabetes— what most dogs get • T ype 2 diabetes— what most cats get FPO short cut die line • About diabetes Redefining pet diabetes management Page title: How injected insulin helps manage your pet’s diabetes. • o matter what type of diabetes your pet might have, insulin injections N can help manage your pet’s diabetes. • By providing insulin, glucose can enter cells and blood glucose levels are reduced. • As a result, cells get the fuel they need. FPO short cut die line • About diabetes Redefining pet diabetes management How injected insulin helps manage your pet’s diabetes. Well-regulated pets show few or no signs of diabetes. FPO short cut die line • About diabetes Redefining pet diabetes management Page title: How we know the insulin is working. • If insulin is sufficiently lowering your pet’s blood glucose level, the first signs you will notice is a decrease in your pet’s thirst and need to urinate. • e may also perform what is called a blood glucose curve, which is a measurement of your pet’s glucose W levels over a 9- to 24 - hour period. • This may be required a few times until an effective dose is determined. • Our goal is to ensure that the insulin dose given is effectively regulating your pet’s glucose levels. • nce this is accomplished, your pet’s diabetes signs should be minimal or disappear and ongoing dosing O and maintenance will be minimal. Offering the convenience that insulin pens have brought to human diabetics, VetPen: • Is more convenient to use than insulin syringes • The ergonomic design of VetPen makes it easier to give your pet insulin injections discreetly anywhere, without the hassle of dealing with vials and syringes. • Delivers an accurate dose consistently • You will be able to provide an accurate dose every time with just the turn of the dial. And VetPen has been shown to enable more accurate dosing than syringes for low and medium insulin doses.1 • Helps enhance insulin delivery safety • The all-in-one construction of VetPen, double needle caps, and sharps remover reduce the risk of accidental needle stick injuries. • Takes fewer steps to prepare doses than using syringes • VetPen contains a multi-dose insulin cartridge that allows you to prepare doses easily, once a new cartridge has been fully primed for use. When using a cartridge for the first time, priming is necessary to remove any air bubbles. This is a critical process because it ensures your pet receives an accurate dose, which is essential for proper regulation. To prime a new cartridge: • Dial a 1-unit test dose. • olding the pen vertically with the needle pointing upward, tap the cartridge gently with your finger a few times H to push any air bubbles to the top. • P ush and hold the release button down towards the needle until the arrow on the pen body points to the start line on the dose selector. Repeat these steps until insulin drips actively or squirts out of the needle tip and you do not see any air bubbles in the cartridge window as you turn VetPen® upside down. A small amount of insulin may appear at the needle tip before the VetPen is fully primed, but continue the steps until insulin drips actively or squirts out of the needle tip. If you encounter any problem using VetPen®, the first step to resolving the problem is always to confirm that air was properly removed from a new cartridge through priming. If you do not prime a new cartridge properly, remaining air bubbles can create multiple issues that result in your pet receiving too much or too little insulin. To properly prime a cartridge: • Dial a 1-unit test dose. • olding the VetPen with the needle pointing vertically upward, tap the cartridge with your H finger a few times to push any air bubbles to the top. • Push and hold the release button until the arrow points to the start line on the dose selector. • epeat these steps until insulin drips actively or squirts out of the needle tip and you no longer R see any air bubbles in the cartridge window as you turn VetPen upside down. • Troubleshooting Troubleshooting always starts with making sure the cartridge was primed properly. To prime a cartridge: • Dial a 1-unit test dose. • Tap the cartridge with your finger a few times. • Push the release button until the arrow points to the start line on the dose selector. • Repeat if necessary. FPO short cut die line Redefining pet diabetes management • Troubleshooting Redefining pet diabetes management Page title: 1: Insulin drips actively from the needle after injection. • If air bubbles have been removed from the cartridge and VetPen has been prepared for use, insulin dripping actively from the needle could be a sign that the needle has been removed too quickly. • If this occurs, do not give the pet another dose. • Be sure to: • During injection, push the release button down fully and hold it until the arrow points to the start line on the dose selector. • Slowly count to at least 5 after the dial has returned to the start line before removing the needle. • This ensures a complete dose is delivered.
