We provide the networking, education and fun. You must provide your attendance. We continue to listen to the requests of exhibitors and attendees and have crafted many improvements to make your stay as profitable and enjoyable as possible. We have returned to a three-day event finishing on Saturday to reduce your time away from your business… unless of course you make it a habit to enjoy your vacation with us. Read on for what is expected of you. OFFICIAL MEDIA SPONSOR Concrete Foundations Association • PO Box 204, Mount Vernon, IA 52314 • FAX 320-213-5556 • www.cfawalls.org GETTING THE MOST FROM VERMONT! With all that is taking place at this year’s jampacked three day schedule, we hope you give strong consideration to the chance to be in this spectacular location by extending vacation on either the front or backside of our meeting. Here are pieces of information we think you should definitely consider taking advantage of to get the most out of Stowe and northwestern Vermont. What to Eat: Stowe, Vermont is a hot bed for tourism summer, fall and winter. You will find one of the broadest culinary opportunities of any location for the CFA Summer Convention. Consider these locations… For casual and affordable opportunities that might be at the heart of your budget or family preference, you will not be disappointed in selecting: Depot Street Malt Shop—a great little 50’s style burger and ice cream joint with flavors galore Pie-Casso Pizzeria—featuring live music with a great budget favorite Pie in the Sky—upgrading the traditional budget favorite, pizza with a wood-fired preparation Gracie’s Restaurant—a great diner atmosphere to treat you family with great variety McCarthy’s Restaurant—perhaps the best breakfast in town But, if you are looking for award-winning and truly unique cuisines we have found four restaurants to be as good as any we have chanced to experience. One word of caution, however, August is busy and you will need to consider booking reservations to these immediately on arrival if not a week or so in advance. Consider adding to your itinerary: Michael’s on the Hill—located before you get to Stowe, this chef-owned restaurant exists on the side of a hill overlooking the valley below. The meals are sensational and the atmosphere is a combination of casual elegance with conversational privacy. We rate this a four-star on the Sauter-Baty scale with an above-average meal price. Steve & Erika’s—located on your way to experiencing what many consider the Mecca of Stowe (Trapp Family Lodge), this incredible menu expresses the creativity of another exceptional chef in a self-owned establishment. Steve not only creates these ...continued on next page EVENT DETAILS THURSDAY AUGUST 9 We can’t have a Summer Convention without the great fun of business golf. Whether you are experienced or swing a club once a decade, this is the event for you. We take the pressure off with a scramble (best shot) and give you a chance to network while enjoying the greatest of sports in the beautiful Green Mountains. Stowe Country Club is adjacent to our hotel property and will delight you no matter how well you play. Shotgun start is at 6:30 am since you rise early and we have lots to do. During the afternoon, the many amazing products promoted through the CFA will be on display on the ‘green space’ behind the resort and many with interactive opportunities for you. This year features our first “RODEO”. Tempting you to try each of the five pump models that will be on display. A different task or course will challenge your skill and the fastest will compete later in the evening for champion “pump operator”. Come young and old, one and all and find out why the technology in our products make such a difference in our performance and quality. The formal opening to our 2007 Annual Summer Convention begins at 6:00pm. Continue to discover the world of foundation product technology while you enjoy a good ole’ American barbeque. The pool will be open for kids and all while the suds flow. On the mic will be your host for the evening, calling the races as we watch the “best of the best” compete for the title of ‘Most Efficient Pumper’. FRIDAY AUGUST 10 With such a high-energy opening behind us, it is hard to imagine that we could keep up the pace. However, Day 2 – the first day of education offers just that. As an attendee to this year’s meeting, we would like to stress two things. The first is, take full advantage of the companies that exhibit for the sole purpose of educating you and presenting opportunities to you – visit each and every product representative. No other opportunity exists to dedicate time to discussing your business and your product needs with the professionals that truly care about your business. The second is, take advantage of the specific education that has been developed for you as attendees. Whether you are a product supplier, contractor or design professional, make sure you soak up this information to best apply it to your business. Your networking opportunities often start from the education you most recently absorbed. Meeting registrants will be treated to a continental breakfast followed by the Annual CFA Business Meeting. Immediately following the conclusion of business, we begin the next set of great presentations offered to you including: • Succession Planning by Doug Staebler – A topic rarely discussed yet often in the back of our minds. What will come of our hard work? Who will pick up the reigns for the successful business we maintain? It is never too late to begin considering where you are and the words from this highly-acclaimed speaker are sure to inspire you to consider this part of your future. • Crisis Communication by Wendy Ward – Constructive Communication offers this presentation describing the importance of understanding media communications and the traps that exist for your company when trouble • Foundation Education Modules by Chris Tull – The responsibility for educating the industry and the workforce on the performance and qualities of concrete foundations rests squarely on all our shoulders. What do you do to educate your workforce? The CFA offers some, but is it enough? Find out how one team approach has been developed that may provide you with an opportunity to step it up in your own company. Following the morning education sessions we will head to the exhibit hall where your first opportunity to ask direct questions of the many product professionals will be presented. While you snack on a mid-day meal, be sure to canvass many of the booths and find out what they can offer to you whether you are a current buyer, past buyer or should contemplate future consideration. We return to education in the afternoon, heading into one of the current hottest topics in our industry – above-grade housing. How many of you are currently active in concrete homes? How many wish you could get into the business but need a strong first step? Three of today’s leading companies will commit time to helping you widen your knowledge and test your confidence in opening this market. Concrete homes are desired in every part of North America…the industry needs contractors. Take a look at these sessions: • Pan Forming Adds Concrete and Value by Van Smith – Going above grade can mean “building a better mouse trap”. Learn how one contractor has supplemented his process with new forming techniques. • Taming “The Range” With the Concrete House by Mike Hancock – At “home on the range” with concrete basements or above-grade concrete homes. This contractor unveils some of the creative solutions he has developed to the needs of a market that is certainly asking for durability. • Standing Firm Amidst the Torrents of Hurricanes by Scott Riegert – Continuing as the leader in concrete home volume, Florida has many success stories to show for it. One of the newest contractors to the Concrete Homes Council shares some of the projects that capture the imagination of creative concrete solutions. The afternoon over and the evening ahead, we have our traditional Technology Reception awaiting the early part of your evening (6 – 9 pm). This year we feature a twist. This is THE best time for you to get detailed discussions going with the product representatives that make this event such a success. We will host a Kid’s Camp from six until eight, giving you a chance to enter into discussions without interruption. Enjoy fine carvings of ham, turkey and prime rib along with many other great food stations while you circulate through the exhibit hall. Our business time is valuable and this is a key opportunity for you to maximize business while building on established or future relationships. NEW -- CONTEST -- this year, pick up your exhibitor passport when you arrive. Use this passport to visit each booth or station Thursday and Friday night. Once you have completed your passport, turn it into the CFA Staff to enter for one of two free Convention Registration Packages for next year’s meeting in Santa Ana Pueblo, New Mexico. ...continued on next page Getting The Most From Vermont, continued... immaculate dishes, he serves many of them and will certainly strike up a conversation with you on what turned him from professional musician to masterful chef. We rate this a four-star on the Sauter-Baty scale also with an above-average meal price…but worth it. Winfield’s Bistro—is highly-regarded and resides on property at Stoweflake. You cannot go wrong in selecting this menu to enjoy although you may have difficulty finding a seat. The place is quaint and should be selected early or late in your week. High praise is given the chef and staff in this restaurant and although we fully enjoyed the meal, we would have to give a very slight nod to the first two for overall enjoyment, largely because of the atmosphere. Foxfire Inn & Restaurant—offers you an Italian meal that rivals the exceptional flavors on this list. You will not find Americanized versions of your pasta favorites here…only truly authentic Italian cuisine from the moment you taste their Italian Wedding Soup to the last bite of their amazing desserts. This also receives a four-star nod on the Sauter-Baty scale but carries a surprising belowaverage meal price. What to Do: Stowe, Vermont was selected as the location for this year’s Convention because it lends itself to the perfect location for our association and the events that occur during summer meeting. Stowe is not only the perfect place to relax and rejuvenate, it is a great destination for those travelers who like to keep busy, explore and treat the family to some fun and exciting adventures. Whether you have a half hour or four hours, check out these opportunities for personal and family fun. EXERCISE -- The Stoweflake Resort contains an wide assortment of physical exercise opportunities including swimming (indoors and outdoors), squash court, weight and aerobic equipment. There are also classes for “spinning” and aerobics that can be arranged for a course fee. In addition, it is conveniently located within walking distance to a miniature golf course, and a recreational walking/biking path. This path is five miles in length running from downtown Stowe behind the beautiful Stowe Community Church, past Stoweflake Resort and all the way north to TopNotch Resort which is near the start of the Mount Mansfield climb. There are numerous bike rental stores in Stowe if you want to rent bikes for a few hours, a half day, or longer, if you want to take advantage of the recreational path. OUTDOOR ACTIVITIES -- There are many opportunities for canoe/kayak rentals, hiking and horseback riding as well as fly fishing -- don’t forget to consider the CFA outing on Saturday. Heading north from Stoweflake to Smuggler’s Notch you will find horseback riding, a gondola ride and an alpine slide. Concrete Foundations Association • PO Box 204, Mount Vernon, IA 52314 • FAX 320-213-5556 • www.cfawalls.org Getting The Most From Vermont, continued... INDOOR ACTIVITIES -- Some indoor activities that may interest families include a beading and pottery shop in Stowe, a game room at the resort which includes a pool table and ping-pong table and only two video games, a movie theatre located down the street from Stoweflake, and a Vermont Bear store a few miles away at which the children can “build their own bear” or other stuffed friend. As you explore the area you will find the Ben and Jerry’s Factory, a cider mill, Blowing Glass Studio and the Von Trapp Family Lodge. All meeting attendees will receive coupons to attend the Ben and Jerry’s factory tour and most will of course want to indulge in some ice cream at the end of the tour. Samples are provided of the flavor of the day and then purchases can be made of pints or cones at the end of the tour. The Cold Hollow Cider Mill presses its cider only one or two days each week during this time of the year. Regardless, when you visit the mill, it is interesting just to see all the apple and maple products at this store. If they are working with apples, there is a demonstration area for the adults and children to enjoy. And as crazy as it may sound, the legendary cider donut is well worth the try (hint, they are warm!). The blowing glass studio demonstrates most of the day (with a lunch break 1:00 to 2:00) how they make their products. It is an amazing trade and worth a quick stop. SHOPPING -- In Stowe you will find a quaint and charming shopping district that is enjoyable even for the browsing shopper. Stores range from jewelry, clothing, pottery, bookstores and many more. The main street in Stowe offers convenient shopping on a walking tour through the streets, and more shopping can be found by car -- don’t forget to look behind Main Street for an entire next layer of shopping. For those who may desire more familiar retail stores, a 30 minute trip to Burlington will get you just that. Within walking distance from Stoweflake is a fantastic Kitchen and Bath store, the Christmas Store, and a few more shops conveniently located. Also, a friendly warning to all mothers (and grandmothers) traveling with young children..there is a great toy store directly across the street from our resort. INDULGENCE -- Of course there is chocolate and eating galore in Stowe as well as wineries throughout the area. However, for those wanting to indulge in some “special” treatment, we definitely suggest the Spa at Stoweflake with your visit. Whether you desire a pedicure, hot oil massage or .... it is available at the Spa. The Spa price list reflects the special treatment that you receive, so plan accordingly if this is of interest to you. Reserve early to guarantee your time. A nice way to enjoy the atmosphere of the Spa with less spent is taking advantage of a $20 daily access fee allowing you to use the public spa areas like the solarium, hot tubs, saunas, etc. -- without the investment of the “special” treatments. EVENT DETAILS CONTINUED SATURDAY AUGUST 11 Our final day of scheduled activity kicks off for registrants and exhibitors with a continental breakfast. Continue those conversations from the night before and get ready for a packed morning of education aimed at benefitting your business. The sessions for the day will focus on technology and industry pressures/opportunities. You will hear from the following: • Robotic Layouts Growing More Efficient by Ken Shawler – Although not new to many long-time CFA members, the topic of robotics still captivates the industry. Technology improvements further shape this opportunity to combine cost efficiency with improved quality. • GPS–Management Tools That Work by Bruce Neale – It often takes a pioneering step to change an industry. One such step has been taken by this CFA member resulting in realized improvements to the work force and insurance rates. Can this technology change your company? • Green Building for Residential Success by Don Thompson – The concept of “green” is all around us. We’re tempted with cars, products and yet misunderstood as an industry. What is the latest on residential concrete’s opportunities for roles in sustainability? A Summer Convention would not be complete without our ‘Annual Awards Luncheon’. We take this opportunity to recognize outstanding accomplishments and dedication as we celebrate the many years many companies have achieved as CFA members. Take this opportunity to celebrate with us the crowning moments of 2006-07. The day isn’t over yet. Many will choose to take in Stowe during the afternoon. The CFA has structured one activity for you to consider. The first 48 people that reserve a spot will have the opportunity to canoe or kayak the local waters for two hours with Umiak. This is a wonderful time to get out and enjoy the peacefulness of Vermont. We’ll take care of holding your reservation and charges are conveniently billed to your room account. You will be encouraged to depart between 1:15 and 1:30 pm for a 2 – 4pm trip which will put you back at Stoweflake in plenty of time for our closing social. Education does continue if you are looking to maximize your business gain. From 1:30 to 3:30 pm, Ed Sauter will lead with a presentation on the state of the CFA Certification Program. Learn more about where the CFA is at with the creation of a company certification program as well as the industry pressures that are mounting. What lies ahead for this program and our Association and what will you need to do about it? At last we have reached Saturday evening and we have the finest of last hurrahs for you. You should definitely consider joining us for one last chance to strike up conversations and take in the surroundings as we enjoy a truly Vermont-style barbeque hosted at Stoweflake. As you arrive at 6pm you will notice the beautiful hot air balloon that will be available to all for a tethered climb up to 120-ft above the property and a spectacular view of the valley. At 6:30pm we will feature a nationally-renowned and local comedian known as ‘The Logger’. His take on this part of the country will surely split your sides and prepare you for the excellent food and socializing from 7-9pm, yes—the suds will still be flowing. ...continued on next page Concrete Foundations Association • PO Box 204, Mount Vernon, IA 52314 • FAX 320-213-5556 • www.cfawalls.org REGISTERING FOR THE 2007 CFA SUMMER CONVENTION MEETING NOTES REGISTRATION POLICIES HOW TO REGISTER MEMBERSHIP POLICY Registrations for the 2007 CFA Summer Convention will be accepted through www.cfawalls.org, by fax at 320.213.5556 or by mail to CONCRETE FOUNDATIONS ASSOCIATION, P.O. This includes all of the same meals. Q: Do my other family members not attending the seminars have to register? A: Aside from the stand-alone events (Sat.
