My sister, Stephanie, and I spent the morning after the Hong Bao Gala drinking coffee, lots and lots of coffee, and reflected on all that happened to make the evening such a success. This was Stephanie’s first Hong Bao Gala, and like many other first timers, she had no idea what to expect. She arrived a few days early, so she was able, or as she may tell you was recruited by her older sister, to help with some of the finishing details. There is a lot that goes into putting on such an event, much of it happening months prior to the date! Bill Cockrell, Binny Arcot, and Mrs. Stacy The home of Brad and Kate Jackson became the site of a Hong Bao Work Party one Saturday in January. continued on page 3 Stacy Payne, Principal NWCA NWCA Mission & Goals The Northwest Chinese Academy provides an outstanding educational foundation in the true immersion of Mandarin language, fostering the total development and highest potential in the individual child. • To immerse children in Chinese language and culture as well as providing bilingual and bi-literate education so they are comfortable as responsible global citizens. • To provide a school environment that supports co-operation, creativity, resourcefulness and the love of learning. • To develop children who are creative, critical thinkers and self-confident in who they are. “Like” us on Facebook • To encourage mutual respect, honesty and multi-cultural understanding. VOLUME 5, ISSUE 5 Page 2 VOLUME 5, ISSUE 5 Continued from page 1... Over pizza and laughter, auction items that had been stored at the Jacksons, were sorted and grouped into auction packages. Another group made wine charms to adorn the Riedel glassware that would be available at the “Wall of Wine Glasses.” As the date of the gala approached, the excitement at school increased. The beautiful student artwork was put on display. Proud students showed their parents which pieces they helped create. I talked up the “Principal for a Day” opportunity that would be part of the live auction. Many students had wonderful ideas about what they’d do if they had the chance to run the school for a day. Sawyer really wanted this opportunity—so much so that he presented his mother Liz with $12 one morning and told her to use it at the auction. The day before the event was a staff in-service day. Our teachers, administrators and parent volunteers worked with Karen and Lisa to fill bidder packets, place beautifully decorated labels on candy bars, and help get decorations ready for display. Page 3 The day had finally arrived! Parent and staff volunteers showed up at The Tiffany Center early that morning to help decorate. Paper lanterns were hung, Hong Bao envelopes were strung on trees, tables were set and auction items displayed. The venue looked beautiful! Once the work was completed, everyone ran home to get ready for the night. Arriving at The Tiffany Center, I couldn’t help but feel the excitement! A photographer greeted us as we ascended the stairs, snapping portraits to be available at the end of the night. Inside the event space, beautifully dressed people were picking up their bidder packets, checking out the Silent Auction items, purchasing glassware from the Wall of Wine Glasses, nibbling on appetizers and enjoying a beverage or two. The party had started! NWCA teachers and members of the Board of Directors greeted visitors and informed them about all the festivities. One new feature this year was the chance to be chosen to play “Let’s Make a Deal” during dinner. Those who didn’t want to risk the chance of continued on page 4 $2000 Kelly Russell, Mrs. Stacy and Li laoshi and record breaking Kindergarten art! VOLUME 5, ISSUE 5 Page 4 Continued from page 3... being chosen could bid for a spot in the game during the Silent Auction. As the Silent Auction closed, everyone moved to their tables. It was fun to look around and see who was sitting where and with whom. Tables were filled with NWCA parents, their family and friends, along with NWCA teachers and staff members. Beaverton mayor Denny Doyle and his wife Ann were among the guests. Judging by the smiles on their faces, it seemed that everyone was having a great time. This year’s emcee was KGW TV’s Drew Carney, who, after helping me toast to the evening’s festivities, quickly removed his jacket and shirt to reveal that he was wearing a red NWCA t-shirt! The fun had started! He brought Kelly Russell to the stage to begin “Let’s Make a Deal.” The audience had a great time encouraging the contestants, most of whom made good deals. Prizes given away included a “Tree” of lottery tickets, a weekend in Lincoln City, and a stay at the Hotel Deluxe in downtown Portland. (One of my favorite moments of the night was when the very sweet Hotel Deluxe winner came back to the stage and auctioned off the package for $400!) Kelly and Drew took to the stage to begin the Live Auction. Some of the packages auctioned off included stays in Palm Springs, San Jose del Cabo and Oregon’s wine country. Lucky winners went home with backstage tours of the TV show Grimm, a farm to table tour and home and garden makeovers. Mayor Doyle purchased a beautiful Chinese rug to be hung in the new Beaverton City Hall. The most coveted items were, of course, the beautiful artwork created by our students, with the Kindergarten piece selling for a record amount! The lights dimmed and the Special Appeal video was shown on the big screen. This year’s video told the story of Sarah, a recent NWCA graduate. Sarah thrived while at NWCA, and it is a joy to see the beautiful young woman she has become. Sarah took the stage at the end of the video and asked the audience to raise their paddles and give generously. They did—raising nearly $45,000! The evening was coming to a close, but the party was not ready to die. A group of guests, who had purchased entrance into the “After Party,” met up at Voicebox in Northwest for some Karaoke fun. We sang, “Whip It”, “Uptown Girl”…the list goes on. It was a blast; something we’ll have to schedule again next year. I smiled as I remembered the fun of the evening. The NWCA community is caring and supportive. What a blessing it is to be a part of it. Thank you to our wonderful Hong Bao committee. Kate Jackson, Karen Shih, and Lisa Snyder, your tireless work produced a fabulous party!! I am grateful for all of you! Thanks to the wonderful teachers, parents, friends and community members for their continued support of NWCA. Your generous donation of time, talent and resources is priceless. We wouldn’t be who we are without you! Xin Nian Kuai Le everyone!
