Email: [email protected] Facebook: Steven Davis (Scooter News) V252 July 2016 Cover Shot goes to… Lyndon Snodgrass #3 having a great weekend on his Husky TE300, 3rd outright Yamaha AORC/VORC Rnds 7-8 Hedley, Corner Inlet MCC plus Harrow State Teams announced 24th July 2016 Scooter News is proudly supported by Lyndon Snodgrass #3, age 18 Finished up the weekend strong in the sprints today! Another 3rd outright and 2nd in E3 which I'm absolutely pumped with Thanks to my supporters the #te300 was great! Husqvarna Australia, SPMX, First Class Motorcycles, Bel_ray Company, Topline27, MXTV Show, Force Accessories First up a big thank you to Dandenong MCC for offering to host our newsletter on their website as we work to move over to a website service. You can view our newsletter at www.dmcc.com.au under the Documents tab. Many of us will have ‘fond’ memories of last year’s Yamaha AORC/VORC round at Hedley where the black sands and dust had us all gasping for clean air and washing the dust out of every pore. 12 months later the scene couldn’t have been more different. Me and photographer Jo had a sixth sense about the Saturday cross country (well, actually we had the weather predictions on the internet) and booked into the Comfort Inn at Foster about 20 minutes from the track on Saturday night. I wasn’t going to be riding (hernia operation coming up!) but had brought along my newly resto’d 1981 KTM250GS to park up in the pits – we have to educate these young riders about their rider heritage you know. KTM’s weren’t always orange, kids. Anyway the reports from the camp site Friday night and throughout the race on Saturday made us glad we were out of the elements as rain, hail and strong winds played havoc with the event: Pit tents blown away Matthew Zygarlicki #411 in the hail (Photo: Kane O’Rourke) Liam Myers bogged (Photo: Kane O’Rourke) Chucky Sanders Mud Angel: Ya might be a naughty boy but (Liam we know you liked motorbike riding, but that much?) Scooter News reckons you’re funny (Photo: KTM) 2 But come Sunday morning the sun was out and the track was slowly draining, but with still enough surface water to invite comments such as ‘should have brought my jet ski’ and the like. There was an important activity to get through before racing began and this was the official presentation of the 2015 Senior Men’s International Six Day trophy to the victorious Aussies (the team was Daniel Milner, Josh Green, Beau Ralston, Matt Phillips, Glenn Kearney, Broc Grabham) and presented by AORC’s Matthew Falvo – with the winning Australian Womens and Junior teams also being presented with their trophies in front of the Aussie crowd. The newly announced 2016 teams will be heading off to Spain in October. AORC Photo With formalities over it was time for the senior sprints – with the Pros off first on one of two tracks, reversed from the previous day, with some sections cut out due to the bogs and ruts. Me and Jo split up, heading out to the two tracks with the cameras: 3 Tasmanian Tom Jones #74, 6th in E1 sprints Mitch Harper #22, 17th outright and fourth in E2 “it rained, it hailed and it was seriously windy but man it was sick fun!!” Chris Hollis #84, 11th outright in sprints The Hedley wetlands 4 Andrew Wilksch #4, first U19 class win Tye Simmonds #42 wins E2 sprint RIDER REPORTS The conditions may have slowed the riders down but perseverance and staying upright meant the finishing flag was achievable for many. Young Kawasaki rider Chris Wynd had mixed results in the Under 19s but always sees the positives as he heads towards the MV Elite Rider Training in September: Chris Wynd # 479 It was a wet, cold and muddy weekend down at Hedley for rounds 7/8 of the AORC/VORC this weekend. In Saturday's cross country I stayed consistent throughout the 3 hour cross country and tried to stay upright which was not an easy task because of the rain/hail and wind that constantly tried to make you stuff up. I was lucky enough to come away with a 5th in Under 19 A grade for VORC and 11th in Under 19s for AORC. On Sunday I had a very up and down day and couldn't find a flow that I could Chris Wynd #479 With Billy Newton sidelined from racing after a knee operation and dad Wayne recovering from a tangle in a Briagolong bog hole, it was up to brother Jack #100 in E2 class to get the Newton Racing name on the podium: Jack Newton Racing #100 Massive weekend for RNDS 7&8 of the VORC at Welshpool! I had a great weekend going 1-1. On Saturday in the cross country I got a fairly decent start getting into 3rd and then straight into 2nd within 5 minutes. I had some good battles with 1st place then took the lead after the 3rd lap and managed to pull a 2 minute lead. 5 Sunday sprints: first sprint I went pretty good but washed the front end out but got up quick. Jack Newton #100 Marcus Suckling had a better set up that might have suited a few riders But as we seem to be reporting week in and week out now it was Daniel Chucky Sanders #1 that took the clean sweep and leads the championship outright on his KTM300: 6 HMAS Chucky Chucky got his hands on my KTM250GS. He threatened to take it out in the swamp and do his last lap on it. No way - that’s my job next week For those of you that think Pete Sanders is just Chucky’s dad helping out in the pits like so many parents do, Pete actually has racing pedigree too as we see in these photos from way back before Chucky was even a twinkle in his dad’s eye: Pete Sanders, BTX Team Green (circa 1986) Photos: Murray Tainton 7 Trevor King, Bob & Pete Sanders Murray Tainton of BTX Motorcycles and Bob Sanders. Photo: Rosco Holden archives E1 rider Dean De Fazio #29 in the swamp – stunning photo from Nez Photography Ash Day #6, 9th in E2 Glenn Kearney #8, 2nd in E1 in the Sprints 8 Josh Major #435, now in Under 19s Jessica Gardiner #737, Blu Cru. 3rd in Sprints Lachie Harrison #43, E3 Vet Patrick Dillon #929 Ruts were axle deep Gavin Dobson, Masters class #927 9 Craig Hale #942 Women’s Class, Angela Angela #148 Whilst Jo was on the Pros/ Expert photography, on my way round I took some photos of the juniors – now it wasn’t one, it wasn’t two, it wasn’t even three – the amount of times I heard the juniors yelling out because they had simply stalled their bike or got it stuck in a rut. Off road riders are noted for their toughness and at this state/national level it is expected that the juniors be tough too. Fair enough, yell out ‘help’ if you’re injured or trapped under your bike but these kids had just stalled or got stuck in the ruts. Harden up! Jake Brennan #784, 12th outright junior sprints Sam Noonan #981 thinking his way over the ruts, good work very smart riding Jake Gogol #782, 6th in J4 10 Ashden Gramlick #603, 4th in J2 What a great idea – if I had a quad I would do this! Masters The day ran smoothly thanks to all the helping hands and we headed off home as the last riders were coming back in, and the pressure washers were coming out. It was the sort of weekend weather conditions that really test the volunteers helping out so a big thanks to the Corner Inlet MCC for all their hard work preparing the course and the pits, changing the course for Sunday, keeping an eye on riders, sweep riding and a million other tasks. And to the Vic Off-road crew of Chris Gray, Denise Hore Race Secretary, Gary Phillip, Chief Scorer Richard Gates, MA’s Eliza Berry, Peta Thomas, Cade Vagg on the microphone, Clerk of Course Peter Bohn, Steward Bryan Noble, sweeps and helpers like Robin Hall, First Aid from EventAid and special mention to the landowners Mr McPhail and Mr Round. 11 Pies made in Fish Creek Hotel Bryan Cade Robin Hally Hall RESULTS Here are the results from Saturday’s Cross Country and Sunday’s Sprints. Rounds 11-12 will be back in Victoria at Penshurst on 10th & 11th September. Corner Inlet MCC will be hosting VCM vintage mx at the Yarram track on 21st August. *************************************************************** DANDENONG MCC MX UPDATE AND FUTURE EVENTS The DMCC motocross track at Wonthaggi is entering into a busy second half of the year – here’s an update from Glenn Capuano: Motocross Update Well the club has been busy lately running some very successful events with the Senior Vic tittles and the Gippsland Centre rounds being a massive success largely due to the small group of volunteers and being blessed with perfect weather conditions for both events. There are now a few practice days coming up on the 31st July and the 21st of August, we then start our Club MX race series on the Saturday the 17th September, Sunday the 16th October and Saturday the 26th November. Stay tuned for more details. MV will be running an Officials Course over 2 consecutive Thursday nights at our club rooms starting Thursday the 4th August - we really need more officials within the club so we can open up the track up for practice days more regularly and over the school holidays so if you are interested in helping your club contact me via email [email protected] As many will also be aware the club is hosting the National Quad Championships on the 8th & 9th October, this will be a spectacle not to be missed, so please let us know if you would like to be involved. Next Year DMCC are considering applying to run a round of the Victorian Junior titles next year but it would be impossible to run such an event with the small band of volunteers we currently have so once again the club are asking you to put your hand up to help out your club and the sport that your kids and/or yourself participate in. The club need helpers before and after the event both on and off the track and if the club can get a large enough group of people together and run a successful event, the club will be considered 13 as a potential candidate to run the Australian Junior titles in 2018 or 2019 but none of this can happen without member assistance. 2017 Round 1 Motul MX Nationals- Could this be possible at Wonthaggi????? Annual Dinner In 2016 the club is celebrating a milestone with its 85th year and to commemorate the event the club will be holding a special dinner on Friday night the 4th November at the Dingley International Hotel so make sure you keep that night free as it will be a night not to be missed. More details will be available soon. ************************************************************************************ State teams announced HARROW 100 VERI VINDURO 30 - 31ST JULY This year will see the main event held on Sunday, with short and long options available. 1 x 50km loop = bronze medal 2 x 50km loop = silver medal 1 x 100km+ loop = gold medal (extended loop) There'll also be a practice track open on Saturday, and for added entertainment there will also be a 'State Teams' challenge. The cream of the Dandenong MCC (or should it be the old farts) are off to represent Victoria as one of two State teams – me, Kurt Goodman, Glenn Capuano and Spencer Harrison. Not only are we worried that the old bikes might break down we are worried that the old riders might break down! So we have already had a bit a sledging from NSW – as the great footy legend Teddy Whitten used to say “We’re going to stick it right up ‘em!” The big V! So 14 between us and the other highly credentialed Victorian Team 1 of Les, Ryan, Rob and Justin we hope to be bringing home the gold and the glory for our great state. The PRO-fessor, as team manager, will be in his element. Yes, I know this is unfair advantage for our Victorian teams, but this is Harrow, and this is WAR! I hope the NSW teams don’t resort to cheating, like the French did last year. Rumour has it they are up there now marking out the hotlines. 2016 Harrow 100 State Teams list 24 July 2016 Victoria Team 1 Les Dew, Suzuki DR400 Ryan Dew, Husqvarna WR 430 Rob Jackman, Suzuki PE250 Justin McLaren, Suzuki PE175 Victoria Team 2 Steven Davis, Suzuki PE 250 Spencer Harrison Honda XR250 Glen Capuano, KTM GS250 Kurt Goodman, Yamaha IT200 NSW Team 1 Rob Shoemark, Husqvarna AE390 Adrian Gould, KTM 250MC5 Duncan Wise, KTM GS250 Steve Baker, TBA ACT Team 1 Mark Boddy, Yamaha IT175 Phil Glasson, Suzuki TS250X Sarah Roberts, Yamaha IT125 Craig McKay, Yamaha IT200 SA Team 1 Todd Nicholson, Yamaha IT200 Paul Morrish, Yamaha IT250 Peter Little, Kawasaki KDX 200 Tim Davis, Honda XR250 NSW Team 2 Peter Mitchell, KTM 400 Linton Cox, KTM GS250 Hugh Litchfield, KTM XC495 TBA ACT Team 2 Dennis Myers, KTM Bill Campbell, TBA Eric Smith, TBA Rich Allan, TBA QLD Team 1 Noel Schulz, SWM TF3 175 Chris Hampson, SWM RS250GS Ashley Sprenger, Maico GS400 Ricky Madden, Husqvarna WR400 Tolmie beards harrow set back The three blokes that make up the vinduro team ‘The Tolmie Beards’ are as much a part of the Harrow Vinduro as the Glenelg River. But we have just heard that one of them will not be bringing his beloved bike and will need a bit of help from the dirt bike community: 15 Rachelle Wilkinson writes: ‘Binladen’ (of the Tolmie Beards) needs our help!!! I sat down tonight to check my emails for Harrow entries, I see an email from Greg Woodmass of the Tolmie Beard's crew. I thought Greg must have forgot that he had already sent thought all the boys entries!! Sadly when I opened the email I was greeted with photos of every bikers worst nightmare!! On Thursday night Pete's (affectionately known as ‘Binladen’) work shed went up in flames at Tolmie, near Mansfield!! Peter and his family are all OK and thankfully the house is separate to the shed. Peter is a chippy and along with 8 motorbikes he also lost all his tools of the trade, bike gear, bike tools and some camping gear. Sadly Pete's list of magnificent old and new machines looked like this......... 2015 Ducati Scrambler 2004 Yamaha TT250 1973 Honda XL Motorsport 250 (owned since new) 1971 Honda Four K1 CB750 (owned since new), Honda XLR 250, Honda XL250 work in progress, Honda XL250 spare, Honda XL350 work in progress, Honda XL350 spare, Yamaha 4 wheeler Suzuki Carry bongo van. In true Biker spirit Bin still wants to come and ride at Harrow, Woody has an old Honda he has dragged out for him to ride... apparently it blows a little smoke but will get him around? Greg has also found some old bike gear. (helmet, pants) if anyone has some old bike boots , size 11 that they would be willing to donate, please send Greg an email on: [email protected] VERI will have a donation tin at Harrow for the weekend, given that Pete has lost everything for work and play I ask that you all kindly think about helping our mate out with a donation towards some new tools and bike gear. If anyone has any spare tools associated with his trade as a chippy that they no longer require, bike tools, socket set's ... anything... I'm sure that would be much appreciated too. If you would like any extra info please contact Greg by email. Thank you all so much Rachelle If you can help in any way please get in touch ************************************************************************************ 16 2016 victorian senior and junior motocross championships Final round, swan hill mcc 23-24th July 2016 Over 40s podium Angus Gelly wins both B Grade titles And it’s a wrap on the Honda Genuine Parts & Accessories 2016 Victorian Motocross Championships.
