Your resource for the Desert 100
Professional rider depicted on a closed course.
Honoring Gary “Ziggy” Siegfried!
Last years 37th Annual Desert 100 turned out to be record
setting in the form of spectators and riders alike. Racing /
riding this historic event offers bragging rights that only we
enthusiasts can comprehend.
It is with a heavy heart that we reach out to Gary Siegfried’s
family to thank them for allowing such a gentle man to bless
our sport with his ability and presence alone.
Sadly, most
of you know that the 2007 Desert 100 was Gary’s last race.
The unbelievable grief shared by us all is unimaginable; more
importantly however is the pride in our hearts knowing that
Gary passed doing what he did well and loved, racing.
For some off-road riders, this hobby is a family oriented sport,
to others it is a personal challenge they conquer solely. To
the Stumpjumpers Motorcycle Club, our entire existence is
family; direct and the ones we encountered along the way.
Gary was part of this extended portion, and every member of
the Stumpjumper Club will hold April 15, 2007 in our hearts
forever.
Godspeed Gary,
you will be forever
remembered!

APPROACHING A DOWNED RIDER BY DR. TARLOW
COURTESY REPRINT GRANTED BY DIRT RIDER MAGAZINE
Trackside medicine is intended to provide a general medical guideline and is not intended to replace the clinical
judgment of a doctor or take the place of a medical doctor’s diagnostic or treatment recommendations. We will always err on
the conservative side for safety purposes.
MOTOCROSS.
I’ve been involved in just about every sport, and unfortunately, motocross ranks high as an injury-ridden sport. On
any given day, you can see someone sprawled out on the track like a cheap yard sale. Stopping trackside and providing medical assistance
to a downed rider is what any responsible rider would do. When I’ve taken a dirt sample, it’s nice to know that some guy cares enough to
stop and check on me, even if it is just to tell me to get up and stop blocking the track.
It would be great to be able to teach you advanced trauma life support or CPR protocol from trackside medicine, but with my writing
skills and your limited reading time, it isn’t going to happen in this article. The real truth is we all should know CPR. Nothing can compare
with the feeling of helping to save someone’s life. CPR
online courses such as, www.firstaidweb.com can certify
you for free and in less time than it takes to put on a new
set of tires, with far less sweat and profanity.
For the purpose of this article, we will assume that
the downed rider is conscious, possibly alert, oriented and
breathing. So what should we do when stopping to help a
downed rider?
First, always remember that you should never move the
rider until his condition has been sufficiently assessed
and always send for medical backup. We can all attest
that after hitting the ground we are not always aware of
our surroundings or all our injuries. Pain from one injury
(broken wrist or ankle) can mask the severity of other more
important injuries (spinal cord compromise). We must
always assess other potentially serious injuries before
focusing on the obvious or less serious injuries. Head,
neck, back and chest injuries (breathing difficulty) are the
first to evaluate once you have determined that CPR is not
required.
If the rider isn’t alert, determine whether he is having difficulty breathing.
If he is, implement CPR training. If the rider is alert, ask him if he is having any
problems breathing. If not, obtain the rider’s full name and whom he’s with; make
sure to remember this information in case he passes out. Determine if he is
alert and oriented to the time, place and situation. If he is disoriented, assume a
worst- case scenario and that he has a head injury and may be unaware of the
full extent of his injuries. Ask where his pain is. Less critical, but painful, injuries
may distract from potentially serious injuries to the head, back or neck. Ask if he
is experiencing any numbness or tingling of the arms and legs (reflects a potential
spinal cord injury). If yes, assume neck or back injury and minimize any movement
and get an EMT. If there is no numbness or tingling of the extremities, you can
rule out a neck or back injury by lightly feeling over the entire spine from the neck
to the lowest part of the back for any tenderness. If any tenderness is present,
then assume possible fracture and get an EMT. If there is no tenderness over the
entire spine and no numbness or tingling of the arms or legs, then it is probably
safe to focus on obvious injuries.
Evaluate the rider’s body systematically from head to toe. You have
already ruled out breathing difficulty, cervical spine and back injury and level
of consciousness. Now, evaluate quickly for any major lacerations and apply
pressure if the rider is bleeding (this may include a protruding bone fracture).
Next, assess chest wall tenderness for rib fractures along with abdominal pain
from blunt trauma such as smashing in to a handlebar. Abdominal pain may be
the result of a liver or spleen laceration, which is potentially life-threatening. Don’t
write it off when a rider complains of abdominal pain. At this point, the rider is
stable, and we can focus on major joints such as shoulders, elbows, wrists, hips,
knees and ankles for any fractures.
Remember, triage involves evaluating the possibly life-threatening and
most serious injuries first. Triage of the downed rider must be done quickly and
efficiently. Don’t focus all your attention on the obvious minor injury (it’s the injuries
you can’t see that can kill you)—be systematic.
FIVE THINGS TO REMEMBER
1. CPR: (airway, breathing,
circulation): They say breathing is
important.
2. BRAIN FUNCTION: Helps
determine level of crisis and if the
patient can provide any help with
diagnosis.
3. SPINAL CORD: Potentially
devastating injury, don’t make a bad
situation worse by moving the rider.
4. BLUNT TRAUMA: Internal injuries,
mild to moderate abdominal pain can
be a life-threatening sign.
5. FRACTURES: If it looks funny, it’s
probably broken; if the bone is sticking
out, it’s a no-brainer.

“You’ll Do Well Just To Finish”
By Doug Jacobson
In the spring of 1981, as my high school graduation was approaching, I decided to try something new. My best friend Ross and I had been riding
for years, but neither of us had raced. We had both heard Ross’ dad tell stories about racing in some old race called the Mattawa 100. Being young and
full of ourselves we decided to give it a try. Ross’ dad cautioned us that the race was tough; he said we’d do well just to finish. Being young and full of
ourselves we took up the challenge. Of course the warnings of an ‘old man’ fell on deaf ears.
We showed up in Mattawa on the day of the race. It was an amazing
spectacle. There were over 1,000 bikes entered in the race that year. In some
places the starting line was three bikes deep. I pulled up on the line with my
nearly mint 1974 Suzuki TM250 with all of 4 inches of travel. I don’t know
if I’ve ever been more nervous. I think I crashed 6 times in the first 2 miles.
Neither of us finished that year.
By 1988, the race had move to Ryegrass and was called the Desert
100, although most still just called it “Mattawa”. I had several finishers’ shirts
in my drawer by this time. I was riding a pretty clean 1982 Honda CR480.
For those of you not familiar with this bike it had a 4 speed transmission and
a left hand kick starter. The race in those days was on the south side of I-90,
and the start this particular year was along the fence line next to the freeway.
The smoke bomb (still an actual stack of burning tires!) was near the top of
the ridge. After taking up my position on the starting line I made a choice. At
the risk of losing my spot to another rider I decided to make a practice run
up to the smoke bomb. When I got there I jokingly asked the track workers
where the course went from there, just in case I was the first one by. I was
still nervous on the starting line, and sometimes joking helps calm me down.
Amazingly my spot was still there when I got back to the line. We straddled
the front tire in those days, and a big banner on the north side of the freeway
signaled the start of the race. With one kick my CR480 roared to life and I
was off. Brain off and throttle pinned, I flew up the hill. I noticed that as the smoke bomb approached there were fewer and fewer riders in my peripheral
vision, and to my complete amazement I was the first person past the smoke bomb. I couldn’t believe it, out of the hundreds of riders I was in first place!
Too bad I didn’t pay closer attention to the tack workers directions. I missed one of the first turns and slipped back to second, then to third, eventually to
around 50th. At least I finished the race that year. I even managed a trophy.
In 1989 the Stumpjumpers used the exact same starting line as they had in 1988. I was on a
brand new CR500. Finally I had a bike that was less than 6 years old! I lined up in nearly the exact spot
that gave me the hole shot the year before. I’d only had the bike for a week, but it was so much better
than my CR480 I just knew I could repeat my awesome start. When the flag went up I spun around the
handlebars and threw my leg over the seat. The big bore roared to life on the first kick… but I wasn’t
used to the brand new clutch, and as I let it out it engaged earlier than expected. The bike lurched
forward a foot or two and died. It must have taken at least 10 more kicks before I could get it to start
again. I was basically dead last, but undaunted I pinned the throttle and tried my best to make up time.
I must have wheeled nearly half way up the hill, passing stragglers left and right. By the time I reached
the top of the hill I was really moving. Too late I noticed a huge rock sticking out of the ground directly
ahead of me. The front tire hit the rock and ejected me over the bars sent me somersaulting down the
track. I was just coming to rest, amazingly sitting upright, when suddenly someone turned out the lights.
I woke up lying on my back looking at the sky, wondering what happened. While waiting for feeling to
return to my arms and legs I decided someone must have been right behind me when I crashed and
couldn’t avoid hitting me – which seemed odd since there were only slow rolling back-markers around
me. Anyone who could ride as fast as I could would have been miles ahead of me. Once I decided I
must not have broken anything I got up and looked back down the course to find my bike, but it wasn’t
there. It was about 30 feet ahead of me! I had been run over by my own bike; I guess you could say I ran
over myself! I had knocked myself so silly I was lucky to get back to the pits and call it a day.
Odessa was home to the Desert 100 by 2004, the year I turned 40. After several years of
reasonable success at the Desert (as high as 4th in the 250 class in the 1990’s) and a number of injuries
I suppose I had slowed down a bit. I can’t say my expectations for the race were very high. I was on a
2001 KTM520EXC. What a bike, and that electric start is pretty nice. The start was line was the same as the year before, and I had a pretty good start then
so I was feeling pretty good. I lined up about 15 bikes in from the left end of the line, nearest the pits, just left of Darin Wolfe. The starting horn sent us
all running to our bikes, all propped up on those familiar wooden sticks. The magic button on my KTM started the engine right up. I had left the bike in
gear, so it was already moving before my butt hit the seat. I started well ahead of everyone on the left end of the line. As we approached the first turn gate I
could see a lot of bikes to the right of me. As I rode over the knoll just before the gate those riders were hidden from my view by the rock outcropping (you
know the one!). I got to the gate just ahead of several riders that were converging from the right side. I was so stoked, another hole shot at the Desert! And
at 40 years old! I pumped my fist in the air and celebrated my second ever lead in the Desert… for about 15 seconds. That’s when a guy on a Kawasaki
blazed by me. I think I was around 65th overall that year and just out of the top 10 in my class.
Now with a mantle full of Desert 100 trophies and a drawer full of finisher shirts I can tell you I truly love this race. It’s exciting to see how
popular the Desert 100 has become in recent years. I hope it will continue well into the future. In a few years when my son is old enough to race the
Desert I’ll tell him my old war stories, and yes – I’ll even tell him “it’s a tough race, and you’ll do well just to finish”.
