Install a Silver Eagle Manufactured safety wire (Item 47) on the shank nut to prevent it from backing off. 6) Tighten all fasteners as required. 7) Check oil level in spindle. Proper level is just below side filler plug. 20,000 Miles or 90 days 1) Complete items 1 - 6 above. 2) Complete item 7 above. Hereafter oil level should be checked each six months. 100,000 Miles or 12 Months 1) Fifth wheel should be entirely disassembled. NOTE: Tighten shank nut until shock absorber bushings bulge almost to outer edge of shock housing. Be sure to reconnect the shank nut safety wire after tightening shank nut. 4) Tighten all other fasteners as required. Replace any worn, stripped or missing fasteners with appropriate grade and strength. 5) Inspect all air lines and electrical cables for chafing, kinking, leakage or damage. 6) Inspect fifth wheel table assembly for bent, worn, cracked or excessively loose parts. Replace any cracked parts and worn or missing fasteners, readjust or tighten fasteners as necessary. Set brakes on trailer. 2. Remove safety wire on shank nut. 3. Remove shank nut and shank washer. 4. Use forklift for hostler to pull against drawbar eye to remove it from the shock housing. 5. Lubricate the shank of the new drawbar eye with rubber lubricant or soapy water and install the shock housing. To completely install, use one of the following methods: • Set the brakes on the trailer. Use a forklift or hostler to push against the drawbar eye until it is seated on the shock absorber bushing. • Use a sledge hammer on the end of the drawbar eye until it is seated on the shock absorber bushing. 6. After the drawbar eye is in place, clean the threads on the shank and coat the threads with Never-Seez, pipe compound or another similar product. 7. Install the shank washer and thread the shank nut onto the shank. 8. Tighten the shank nut until two threads remain exposed inside the nut. 9. Install a Silver Eagle safety wire on the shank nut to prevent it from backing off. 10. Periodically check the tightness of the shank nut and adjust as necessary. Upon uncoupling, the handle should fall freely to the bottom of the slot (shown as lower handle in figure), allowing the handle to move inward Figure 2 If the handle rests on the top of the slow when fully coupled (shown as upper handle in figure), then the nuts are too tight. When fully coupled, the handle should rest at the bottom of the slot (shown as lower handle in figure). Note: It is necessary to use two wrenches to loosen/secure the standard and jam nuts. Proper adjustment of the nuts will be achieved by following these guidelines: 1) The standard nut should be fully tightened onto the handle's capscrew. 2) Tighten the jam nut until it bottoms out on the end of the capscrew. 3) Complete tightening by locking the standard nut against the jam nut. Recheck handle movement for proper adjustment. Make sure jaw is locked open and trailer is at proper height. 2. Back dolly slowly under trailer until jaw locks kingpin and handle moves into the fifth wheel. Uncoupling 1. With vehicle at rest in a relaxed condition and landing gear down, (not being pushed together or pulled apart), pull fifth wheel handle outward and upward to lock the fifth wheel open. 2. Pull dolly slowly out from under the trailer. Note If the handle will not pull outward when the vehicle is in a relaxed condition, use landing gear to raise trailer and unload the dolly fifth wheel. With Jam Eye Shank already installed in the shock housing, slide the pushrod, threaded end first, over the top of the eye and into the tubular shank. 2. Install the shoe by placing it into the eye with the contact surface facing to one side, rotate the shoe 90 º so its contact surface faces forward and the hole for the pushrod is to the rear. Check to insure the shoe will slide fore and aft along the inside of the eye. 3. Install the pushrod into the shoe, making sure to line up the holes. Drive the roll pin into the shoe and through the pushrod. 4. Slip the threaded end of the pushrod through the cap on the shank nut and install a jam nut and coupling nut. Thread both nuts on as far as possible to draw the shoe to the rearmost position in the eye. 5. Install a service air chamber with a s 2" pushrod length with a jam nut threaded onto its pushrod. Torque air chamber mounting nuts to 100 ft/lbs. 6. With a 5/8" open-end wrench pry against the jam nut on the air chamber pushrod to pull the pushrod out 3/16" to 1/4". Thread the coupling nut part way onto the air chamber pushrod to couple ti with the pushrod and shoe. 7. Loosen the jam nut against the cap of the shank nut to allow the pushrod and shoe to travel forward when air pressure is applied. Place a 2" diameter rod into the eye and apply air to the service chamber. DO NOT PLACE FINGERS IN THE AREA OF THE EYE AND SHOE OR AREA OF COUPLING NUT WHEN APPLYING AIR TO THE SERVICE CHAMBER. 9. With the shoe contacting the 2" diameter rod, adjust the jam nut on the pushrod until it contacts the cap on the shank nut. Tighten the coupling nut and the two jam nuts, jamming them together. 10. Release the air pressure and reapply to recheck the adjustment. NOTE: After tightening shank nut to adjust shock housing, re-adjust shoe and stop using step 4 through 10. It is important to note that different axle styles have different requirements. Attached spring seats to the beam must be a controlled manufacturing process. Both the seat and the axle must be properly positioned by assembly fixtures and then welded in place. Please refer to the following instructions for properly locating spring seats on Rockwell trailer axles. Round Axles On round axles, the spring seats normally have full contact with the axle beam and very little vertical load is transmitted to the attachment weld. These welds carry the torsional loads of the suspense and resist torsional braking loads. For proper assembly, seats must be in full contact with the beam, be parallel with each other, and be correctly located in relationship to the top of the axle beam. Important On some suspensions, in particular trailing arm air rides and rubber sphere types, torsional loads are transmitted through the welds and into the axle during articulation. These applications require special care when establishing welding locations. Contact the Rockwell Trailer Axle Application Department for welding recommendations for each individual application. Rectangular, Square and Shaped Axles Axle shapes, other than round, do not always allow full contact of the spring seat to the axle beam. This condition exists even though the seats are parallel to each other and properly positioned. This condition means that parts of the vertical load, as well as the braking and/or suspension torsional loads, must be absorbed by the attachment welds. The center of the fifth wheel king pin and the center of the axles must be installed at the center of the trailer floor. Figure 1 Use the following procedures to check the alignment of trailer axles: Single Axle Trailers Tandem Axle Trailers 1) Raise or lower the fifth wheel to put the trailer in a level position. 2) Remove the outer wheels or the outer tires and rims, depending on the wheel equipment. (Figure 1) 3) Remove any parts from under the chassis that can interrupt measuring the distances between the king pin and the ends of the axle. 4) Load the trailer to its rated capacity with the load correctly arranged. 5) Attach a steel measuring tape to a hook and the hook over the king pin. Measure the distances "A" and "B" from the king pin to the ends of the axle. The differences between the A and B measurements must not exceed 1/8" (3.2 mm). 1) Move the trailer forward and backward over a level floor, two or three times with the last movement forward, to permit the suspension to become correctly aligned to center the front and rear wheel tracks. 2) Raise or lower the fifth wheel to put the trailer in level position. 3) Remove the outer wheels or outer tires and rims of the forward axle only, Figure 2. 4) Remove any parts from under the chassis that can interrupt measuring the distances between the king pin and the ends of the forward axle. 5) Load the trailer to its rated capacity with the load correctly arranged. 6) Attach a steel measuring tape to a hook and the hook over the king pin. Measure the distances "A" and "B" from the king pin to the ends of the forward axle. The differences between the A and B measurements must not exceed 1/8" (3.2 mm). 7) Measure the distance "C" and "D" between the front and rear axle centers. The differences between the C and D measurements must not exceed 1/16" (1.6 mm). This small gauge can help you make the "C" and "D" measurements between the axle centers. The gauge can be made of drill rod and must be rigid and true. The pointer arms of the gauge must be parallel and held at the same height. How To Correct The Alignment Of Axles To correct the alignment measurements that are not within the limits, inspect the suspension for worn, broken or loose parts. Adjustments to the suspension, and the replacement of worn or broken parts, must be made to put the axles into alignment. Carefully follow the service instructions made available by the trailer or suspension manufacturer when you work on this component. The limits of 1/16" (1.6 mm) and 1/8" (3.2 mm) are the maximum limits for correct alignment of the axles. These small limits make accurate measurements.
