Plethora of Great Local Shows
We are saddened to her of the loss of another
member of our WVSR family. Helen Kundelius
passed suddenly on June 20th while visiting her
sister. Her smile and wonderful personality will
be missed by us all.
Cruise-ins, Car Shows, and Chaos.
I recently attended an event in Sheridan, where I met two really nice people. No need for names. They had a great hot
rod, and I asked them if they wanted to come to one of our club meetings and “check us out”. The man looked at the woman, and he answered “No, no more clubs for us!” He didn’t seem mad or anything, but you could tell he was hurt. I asked if
he would mind sharing his experience, and he told me the story. His wife and he belonged to a car club, and they really
wanted to be involved, but due to work and home, they could not hold an office. The man said that he saw an opportunity
to get involved when the “club cruise” was going to start planning, and in need of help. He and his wife said they would
gladly help, and were given a task to do by the “person in charge”. When the day of the event arrived, the woman took her
post at the booth she was to help in, and the “person in charge” told her “We have it covered”. It was such an offense,
she looked for her husband (who was suppose to help with parking), and when she found him, he told her the “person in
charge” told him they did not need any help. They both seemed quite sad about the experience, and did not stay in their
club.
Another person whom I visited with told me the tale of how in their club, she was in charge of the 50/50, but some “hot
shot” guy came into the club and began to try to be the boss of every job in the club. When the meetings came around,
this person took the jar and the tickets and just “took over”. Needless to say, he also quit his car club. Another example
of good people getting “wounded”.
I know what old timers say, “a lot of folks get their nose out of joint when the don’t get their way”, but this is different.
We ask for help, for everyone to take part in the club activities, and then some person (most times unintentionally) will
“offend” the other club member. It is also the case that there are “usuping” types, who want to be the big cheese in everything. Either way, it is offensive and rude, and not what a family oriented club does. Differences of OPINION may occur, but we have a means of dealing with those by motions and votes. In a car club, we are each different, with different
talents and abilities. We all find our niche, and when someone gets to thinking the others are no longer needed, then of
course we get a reputation from those that have left over hurt feelings.
The first couple belonged to Willamette Valley Street Rods. The second one I will not name.
I also ask you, my fellow club members, that if I do anything to offend you, tell me. I don’t bite, but sometimes I don’t
see myself the way others do. Let’s be mindful of how we present ourselves, and how we deal with our fellow club members. I know I will certainly be more aware. I care a great deal about all of you!

Capt. Michael King Smith Memorial Car Show
The sun was hot this afternoon in McMinnville at the 5th Annual Capt. Michael King Smith Memorial car show. Ill health
did not prevent Willamette Valley Street Rod member Sylvia Morley from rolling out the red carpet treatment to her fellow club members.
This year, there was an added treat, a personal visit from Dale Smith himself. The Willamette Valley Street Rods caravanned over and enjoyed the oldies and the great food! Members were treated to free admittance to the Evergreen Air
Museum, and the Evergreen Space Museum. First place went to a cute little Metropolitan, second to a sweet 51 Chevy, and
third to a beautiful 55 Chevy. None of the Willamette Valley Street Rods won awards, but Dayle Langley was asked to
judge the cars. She said she didn’t think it “fair” to vote for her buddies.
The annual Capt. Michael King Smith car show is a must do, so check your calendars for next year. Participants were treated to an air show compliments of the fly-in at the McMinnville Airport.

LA Roadster Show
Last Wednesday, June 11, I flew out out of Portland to go to the LA Roadster Show. The first stop was Phoenix. Tom Harris picked me up at the airport there. We just kinda kicked backed and visited the rest of that day. We went to bed early
because we got up Thursday morning at about 2:30 am ( Oh, dark thirty). We met some other guys at 3 am a few miles
from Tom's house. Then were off down the road. We left early to beat the heat in the desert. There were 5 roadsters, a
40 sedan, and a T coupe in a trailer all traveling together. I think these guys were retired bakers because they were really hauling buns. We stopped several times to fill up. Tom's roadster with a 392 Hemi with dual fours was not the most
economical one of the bunch. We arrived in Pomona about 10:30 am and checked into our very nice $69 a night hotel.
There was a pretty good car show in the parking lot of the hotel. Lots of male bonding there. We went out for dinner and
hit the sack early.
Friday was the first day of the show. I sat on a rock and watched cars roll in for a couple hours. Dale and Lennie Wheeler
drove in around 11 am. We visited for a while, then wandered around looking at cars and vendors booths. Saturday we
drove in and BJ McFarland was a parking guide. He has been a LA Roadster member for years. He lives in Keizer and is a
former WVSR member. When we drove in BJ said there were 875 roadsters so far and more coming in. I think there
were nearly 1000 roadsters plus probably a couple hundred other street rods. The actual show is limited to 1936 and earlier roadsters only. We caught up with Marv and Roman a couple of times. Marv drove his 36 Ford Cabriolet down from
here. There is also a swap meet there. I walked that a couple of times. I bought a steering column, a u-joint, and a spring
perch, all for my Model sedan project. Tom is going to bring that stuff in July when he comes up with his motor home. I
could not bring it on the plane.
Sunday was kinda light. Lots of people left that morning. We stayed for the whole thing. We checked out the vendors in
the building and more swap meet stuff. After a Mexican dinner, we went to bed early to get an early start on Monday. We
left at 4:00 am. By the time we got there, it was really heating up. The temp in Phoenix has been running over 100 daily
for some time. I went in and took a nap. A friend of Tom's came over later and Jane made us a wonderful spaghetti dinner
with a delicious key lime pie for dessert. Tuesday morning, Tom took me to the airport and the was history.
It was a great week with a great friend.

Marv Shetler and Roman Baszniak & Darrel Williams from the Flywheels in Silverton, were also at the LA Roadster Show/
Swap Meet held on Father’s Day weekend in Pomona, CA. Marv Shetler drove his 36 Ford Cabriolet.

Some of the club members went to the 27th Annual Sunshine Cruz at Clackamette Park for a Friday evening
show. We caravanned the back roads to the show in Oregon City, which was hosted by Trick N Racy Cars. There were
over 200 cars there, beautiful setting along the river. Fun to see different cars. The weather was perfect...

Hot Rods, Ribs and Monster Trucks
The parking lot at the People's Church
was filled on 5/24/14 with classic cars.
The event was a benefit to raise money
for a local man fighting cancer. Besides
the show and shine, there off road vehicles crushing cars and a monster truck.

9th Annual Route 99W Car Show
We met up at Roth's this morning for a caravan to the McMinnville Auto Club hosted car show at Evergreen Museum. We
won the Club Participation award with 10 cars and John and Sharon Palmer won the 50-59 class. There were over 160 cars
there surprising the MAC as they were running out of parking. It was a fun show with a lot of cars I had never seen before from up north. We're on their mailing list for next year so we can get more notice of this show. Victoria and I ran out
of Carousel flyers after about 2/3s of the show. There was a lot of interest from some of the northern cars for the Carousel show. See you cruise'n, Ray

Hundreds of air cooled Volkswagens, including at least two of our members cars, were on display at the 29th annual
Northwest Bug Run at the Woodburn Drag Strip on 5/31/14. The show also included drag races, a swap meet and cars for
sale. This is a fun show, the "air heads" are a dedicated group.

Several times a year I go down to Shedd, Oregon for a Thursday evening cruise-in. I took
these pictures May 29. I took my 32 coupe this time. They do this every Thursday in the
nice weather months. Shedd is on Hwy 99E just about 5 miles south of Hwy 34. It is
about 35 miles from my house but I take back roads and really enjoy the drive. I have
seen over 100 cars there and as few as 35 or so. Many of the cars are from Albany, Eugene, Lebanon, Corvallis and south valley areas so we do not see them here in Salem very
often. Many are traditional hot rods, muscle cars, and just plain cool. There is a little
burger restaurant and also a market with a deli. The meatloaf sandwich at the market is
my favorite. The cruise-in starts around 5 and by 7 everyone is pretty well gone. I get
home about 8pm. It is a fun way to take the car out for a little run, see some cool cars,
and meet some new friends. What else are going to do? Watch reruns of "Samantha the
Teenage Witch". Try it.........John Stanton

Looks like your up to bat! It’s shaping up to be another Great Carousel Cruise and to make it even better we need your
help. As you know we are always looking for silent auction and raffle items in new or like new condition. We had great
success with the Silent Auction in the past and is a great way to help charities we support. Bring your items to the next
club meetings and even the day of the cruise, its never to late.
Now the business end, we have lots of opportunity to show your stuff, there are many small jobs that will need to be
filled through out the day as they pop up, be ready jump into action and enjoy the day. I can say we have the best club
around and lets show everyone else what a great time this is.
If you have any sponsors lined up please bring with you to the next meeting as Warren and Linda will need them. Time
to bring your name badge so I can call on you !

Don’t forget to bring your empty returnable bottles and

help with the cost of building the A Project. Our Member-At-Large, Dayle Langley, will collect them and turn
them in for us.
