The next Officers Meeting is Tuesday, June 25th - 7:00 p.m. at Elmer's Restaurant (early for dinner). The next WVSR General Meeting is Tuesday, July 2nd - 7:00 p.m. at Pietro's Pizza (early for dinner). Adjourned Brookstone Care Center show on June 14, John Woods awarded trophy for Best Paint. Jim Palmquist Photos I can't keep up with all the car shows going on around Salem. To me it's mind boggling! Anchorage had a car show in April..indoors, one on June 21st, the Solstice, and the BIG show on the park strip August 1st. This place is like heaven to a car guy. I'm sure glad I live here now! Last Friday, I went to the Alzheimer Care Center car show in South Salem. Free show with burgers, dogs and chips. They had a really good singer singing songs way older than me. John Woods won a trophy for Best Paint. The residents , you could tell were having a great time looking at the cars and Harleys. It was a fun 3 hours. Saturday I headed over to the Marion Estates car show in Sublimity. They filled their parking lot with street rods. Another gorgeous day of cars and friends. Greg Smith was showing his new self applied paint job on his Corvette. Man, it looks like one of the best pro jobs I've seen!! Lots of work there. Some more great hot dogs and popcorn. The bake sale was sold out in a short time. Fathers Day was off to the Spirit Mountain Casino car show. What a crowd! They expected about 100 cars and ended up with over 500. The Cartwrights and I got there right on time and had to park in the back 40 with the trailer queen trailers. I found you can pick out Palmquist's Carmen Gia in a crowd of 500 with ease...:) The morning buffet line was about a 2 hr wait and all the cafes were backed up and hour. Sure glad I took some munchies. This will be a great one next year if they expect the crowd. I'm going to forward all the information on upcoming car shows to Garry for the website and to Ken for the newsletter rather than duplicate it all. I'll keep scanning and posting some of the local shows with the weekly email. Have a great Cruising month, Ray WVSR Website www.wvsr.org is the address to the club website. There is a ton of information available at your fingertips and is great to recommend to that new street rodding friend you met who may be interested in joining the club or just learning more about us. We have pages on Joining the club, members rides, Upcoming events, History, News, and Community Outreach Programs (cleverly shortened as our COP's page) and much more. For photos follow the FaceBook link on our homepage to see all the people, vehicles, and events we attend. The Carousel Cruise page has downloadable forms for registration, trophy sponsorships, and vendor applications. Information, registration forms, and event flyers can be found for a lot of the area happenings on our Upcoming events page. Other things you'll find are items for sale or wanted on the classified page, 40+ years of club history, current and past newsletters, meeting minutes for those that couldn't attend, by-laws, and more. If you can't remember the email address ([email protected]) you can always use the form on the Contact Us page and don't forget to send in that photo of you and your ride to add to the members rides page. If you don't have one just get Dayle or someone to take a picture at the next meeting or at one of the events! A lot to see so go visit the site and then tell all your friends to check it out too! On a side note.... Who wants to be the backup webmaster for the club? It is easy to learn how to update and edit the site and I am willing to teach anyone with an interest. Send me an email stating your interest or chat me up next time you see me. Webmaster Garry Run For The Wall As many of you know, Joanne and I recently finished the Run For The Wall and Rolling Thunder. When I decided to do this, I thought it was probably just another motorcycle ride, only with a lot more riders. Was I ever wrong! If you think this country is going to hell in a handbasket, I have news for you. IT IS NOT! The outpouring of community support for our ride across the width and breath of our great nation was awesome and riding into small towns with the population often standing shoulder-to-shoulder waving flags and welcoming us into their communities brought tears to many an eye. The people of our country truly love it and show it in many different ways every day. One example was one of the chase trucks broke down on the southern route through Texas. A community, it's school, and a local Ford dealer stepped forward and offered to fix the truck free of charge. And when it was discovered that the truck would not be repaired for a few days, the dealer gave the driver a Ford Dually Diesel pickup with 100 miles on it to use and simply told him to return the truck on his way back to the west coast and pick his truck up. I am not only proud to be an American, but I have now completed what was probably one of the most powerful events of my life. A cruise is a meeting of car enthusiasts at a predetermined location, organized largely through mobile phone, word of mouth or simply by a cruise being established enough that it becomes a regular event. Such a regular event occurs twice a month every summer, and has for the past 12 years. The tragic death of Russ and Margie Stromeyer's 20 yr. old son Brett was the catalyst for what is now known as Stroh's A & W Wednesday Nite Ctuise-in. The locals have their favorite spots under the canopy next to one of the famous A&W menu boards, others just find a place in the parking lot. Don't come too late or you park along the highway or in the lot across the street. You would have to ask Russ directly as to how many cars he has on any one night. LOTS!! I know that! Just when I think I have taken pictures of all the cars, next cruise, one I have not seen comes rumbling up out front. Proceeds from the raffle and sale of tee shirts (all collectors items) go to the Brent Stromeyer Foundation, providing scholarships to local students. There are other events and shows during the year for fundraising, but the cruise-ins have taken on a life of there own. Anybody who is (or thinks they is ) is there. A wonderful family event, a fantastic place to show-off your car, and a yummy place to eat supper and do some "serious" looking! So as the oldies waft out over the cars and the crowds, people milling round and visiting, hugging each other's neck, and getting a good look at the what "so-and-so" did on their latest project....I will walk around and take my photos, and enjoy some of the happiest times of my life. Going to "Stroh's" will always be among my favorite summertime memories. Fond memories of driving my 55 Studebaker pick-up, old friends (some now gone), cars I have "drooled over", and those warm summer nights. Dayle Langley, WVSR Member-at-Large Member Profile: Loran and Peggy Sue Sell Loran Sell married Peggy Sue on October 15, 1966. How cool to actually get to marry Peggy Sue....bet I know what song they like! Introduced to WVSR by his good friend Don Erickson, Loran and Peggy Sue have been members for 25 years. They ride around in that sweet 1939 Buick Special 4 door. These are some busy folks! They are both retired teachers/educators as well as Loran from construction. I don't think they were ready to slow down much however. Here are few of the things they are involved in: Holy Cross Lutheran Church, Foster Parents Night Out (bless you!), and Bunco night! In addition they participate in Leadership Foundation AND Friends of La Casita. I am out of breath just thinking about it. They still find time for the car shows and our club meetings! Oh and, Peg is in a walking group! In their own words; " We are active senior citizens who have been together for almost 50 years. We really enjoy our car, but find our lives so busy that it is difficult to participate in club events. We are making some changes in our lives that will hopefully allow us to participate more in the future. " You know I always like a little levity in my profiles, so when I asked about their most embarrassing moment this is what they said; "Mine is too embarrassing to share, but I'll tell you one of Don's. We went to a car event in Montana a few years back. Don drove his car pulling a little trailer, and I trailered mine behind the motorhome. Don's car didn't make it home, so he had to trailer it and drive mine the rest of the way." I am waiting patiently for the meeting so I can find these sweet people and say hello. That is the purpose of our member profiles, to help create a club that is fun...no strangers, no one left out. So, if you can, make your way to where they sit and shake their hand or hug their neck.....they are family now! Upcoming profiles: Bruce Renolds, Robert and Helen Kundelius...and yours if you get one to me! Dayle Langley, WVSR Member-at-Large In memory of Capt.
