motion animation κλπ.
Georges Schwizgebel, Vladimir Leschiov, Riho Unt, David Jansen, Lei Lei, Cordell Barker,
Reka Bucsi, Steve Socki, Janice Nadeau κ.α.
Jancis.
Οι Sandy Brour

This year we celebrate the 15th edition of Countryside Animafest Cyprus! For fifteen years
the festival has maintained a dynamic presence in our country’s cultural scene.
I feel that this joyful anniversary marks a turning point for Cypriot animation production.
This year’s National competition programme is the most advanced and artistically mature
we have ever had. It includes international co-productions, and one production by the
Cyprus Cinema Advisory Board. Furthermore, two films by Cypriot artists take part in the
international competition section, while one Cypriot film is included in the international
panorama of children’s films. Young Cypriot artists, who participated in the competition
in previous years, are returning with more mature work, while some, who in the past had
attended workshops or participated as festival volunteers, are making their debut in the
national competition section. This is the greatest reward for us, since we’ve always kept
the development of Cypriot animation production high up on the festival’s priorities.
This year the participants in the National Competition Section are: Constantinos Terlikkas
(with a co-production with Hungary and Romania, also participating in the international
competition), Alexis Chaviaras (Co-production with Cyprus Cinema Advisory Board, participating also at the Children’s film Panorama) Rhea Lazarides, Christina Karekla, Sholeh
Zahraei, Constantinos Sophocleous, Maria Nicolaou, Constantinos Georgiou, Dino Syrimis, Charalambos Margaritis, Savvas Theodosiou, Georgia Nicolaou, Eleni Chandriotou,
Cosmas Nonis, Periclis Georgiou, Charis Christodoulides and Stephanos Chrysanthou.
At the same time, the students of the Cyprus Technological University Georgia Nicolaou,
Irini Pantela, Iraclis Ioannou, Kalia Pavlou, Michalis Constantinou, Myria Adamou, Nicoletta
Kyriakou, Pamela Andreou, Fanouria Panayiotou and Philippos Athinodorou, will participate in the festival with an interactive installation entitled “Hope with-in”.
The exciting selection of films in the international competition will be a feast for the senses,
and will include work by several internationally acclaimed artists, who continue to enchant
with their technique and emotional depth. In curating this year’s diverse and highly selective programme we observed that, despite our era’s technological advances, an increasing
number of independent artists are using traditional animation techniques, such as painting
on glass, drawn animation, stop motion animation etc.
Among other artists, this year we will screen films by Koji Yamamura, Phil Mulloy, Igor Kovalyov, Georges Schwizgebel, Vladimir Leschiov, Riho Unt, David Jansen, Lei Lei, Cordell
Barker, Reka Bucsi, Steve Socki and Janice Nadeau.
One of our core beliefs is that the field of animation in Cyprus is enriched and cultivated
through contact with the work of international artists of such caliber. Along with workshops, tributes and masterclasses, the international competition section is an educational
tool for Cypriot animators.
So we’d like to thank all the international artists who are participating in the festival, either
in this year’s competition program or with educational side-bar events, thus supporting its
mission.
Side-bar events this year include a workshop by artists Thomas Renoldner and Federica
Pagnucco entitled “PrintmakingAnimation”, at the Hambis Printmaking Museum, Platanistia (July 18-23), as well as an exhibition based on their film «L’ alfabeto delle cose piccole»;
a Day conference /Animation Forum in collaboration with Creative Europe Desk Cyprus,
the Cyprus Technological University and the University of Nicosia, with keynote speakers
Morten Thorning and Lana Tankosa Nikolic from the Danish animation school The Animation Workshop; from the 21st to the 23rd July during the day the audience will be able to
watch tributes to the work of Theodore Ushev and Kaspar Jancis, screened indoors in the
Manor House at Kouklia.
We are also proud to host an exhibition of posters by Theodore Ushev, in the Medieval
Manor house, for the duration of the festival. Ushev, an internationally acclaimed director,
animator and poster artist, well known to the Cypriot public from previous festival editions,
has also created this year’s festival poster.
The festival will close on Saturday July 23rd with the award ceremony, followed by a concert by one of our most beloved Cypriot bands, Sandy Brour. Sandy Brour were formed
in 2012 and in 2016 their first album came out. We wish them the best of luck with their
album debut and we thank them for being with us this year, to bring these magical three
days to a close.
I would like to express our warmest thanks to our sponsors for their unwavering support:
the Cultural Services of the Ministry of Education and Culture, who have supported us for
fifteen years, the Department of Antiquities, for allowing us the use of the Palaepaphos
archaeological site free of charge, the Cyprus Youth Board, the University of Nicosia, the
Cyprus Technological University, and the Austrian Embassy in Cyprus.
This year the awards are sponsored by the Bank of Cyprus. We thank them and we look
forward to a long-term collaboration. We would also like to thank Creative Europe Desk
Cyprus for co-organizing the lectures and presentations. I would also like to thank our
volunteers whose contribution is invaluable.
I would like to welcome and thank our international jury, Kaspar Jancis, Theodore Ushev
and Yiorgos Savvinides.
Finally, a big thanks to our audience, who have supported the festival for 15 years, embracing the art of animation.
Have a wonderful festival!

Piano, 2015
The films of Estonian animator Kaspar Jancis
are understated, absurdist, comic-melodramas
featuring misguided characters struggling to
connect with their fellow humans. Their tragedy
is that they fear genuine, intimate connection
yet desperately crave it.
In the Hitchcock- influenced, Weitzenberg
Street (2002), the man performs an assortment of inane magic tricks to get his lover’s
attention. Bored, she finds erotic solace in the
touch of a mosquito. Touch is all she craves,
not tricks.
We see it again at the end of Marathon (2006),
when a flirting, deceitful mother, having forgotten her daughter, races to a playground to find
her. As they make eye contact and wave, a
train passes between them and leads into the
end credits.
In the Cartoon d’or winning, Crocodile (2009),
a one time Opera star turned boozy, crocodilecostumed kid’s entertainer would rather suffer
and remain alone than accept an imperfect
love.
Jancis’ most recent film, Piano (2015) is arguably the only time we get some semblance of a
happy ending when the gaggle of disconnected and lonely characters briefly rise above their
self-induced miseries when a piano begins
playing. For one brief moment, the characters
are aware and truly alive. In unison they gently
smile and quietly emit unfiltered, harmonic joy.
In a world suffocating from facile distractions,
perhaps these fleeting, momentary connections are the best we can hope for.
If so, that truly is tragic.
Morten on the Ship of Fools, 2016 (working title)

Theodore Ushev
Ancient Site of Palaepaphos - Κouklia
Theodore Ushev is a freewheeling animation
artist with an almost feverish compulsion to
create as fast and as often as he wants to.
Fast and prolific are generally not the way
things are supposed to be done in animation.
Despite technological advancements that now
enable animators to create quicker and just as
effectively as they could ten years ago, a good
many animators still like to take their sweet
ol’ time sometimes as long as 10 years! when
creating their films. Working at such a slow
pace can make it difficult for animators to craft
relevant art that speaks to the moment and
has, arguably, led to one of the drawbacks of
animation: the genre often lacks urgency and
immediacy.
Why so slow? Animation is littered with formalists so fixated on technique and craft that
“concept” is virtually an afterthought, a dirty
word. The result is precious, polished works
that look nice can have very little to say about
the surrounding world.
Ushev’s handling of animation is raw, rough
and chaotic; there’s nothing polished,
pristine or precious about his methods. His
films, some made in mere weeks, seek to
unpack the chaos of his moment—and ours.
It’s this rare and raw honesty that separates
Ushev from some of his animation peers who
too often treat animation like one of Laura
Wingfield’s glass figurines from The Glass
Menagerie.
Ushev’s films are a refreshing bad breath
and a sorely needed slap of reality in a field
dominated by works of faux angst and technological gumdrops.

The Man Who Waited, 2006 / Poster by Theodore Ushev

A DIGITAL EXPERIMENTAL APPROACH
OF THE FRAME BY FRAME PROCESS
animation.
Has digital technology standardized animation
filmmaking, or does the animator have more flexible tools in his/her hands than ever before?
This presentation will focus on experiments as
part of a study of the digital frame by frame animation process. By exploring the digital space
as a vast metaphysical field, this research aims
to discover ways of producing optical illusions of
motion that will suggest new cinematic viewing
integrated in the very individual units of film.
Experiments on the compositing of the filmic
time and the film frame will be presented, as well
as examples of the application of these experiments in film and video.
MORTEN ON THE SHIP OF FOOLS
KASPAR JANCIS
the Ship of Fools) είναι μια ταινία stop motion από Εσθονούς, Ιρλανδούς και Βέλγους
Morten on the Ship of Fools is a stop motion
feature made by Estonian, Irish and Belgian
animators. It’s based on the book and theatre
play by Kaspar Jancis. The film is about Morten
who, after being magically shrunken to the size
of an insect, gets trapped on his toy boat. There
he has to prove himself to cannibalistic insects
who have control over his ship. The film is made
in classical stop motion technique. It will be a
story for children of all ages! Its metaphorical
content can speak to an adult audience. It is an
adventure film told in the old-school way, a homage to stories like Alice in Wonderland, James
and the Giant peach, Wizard Oz etc.

It is in black and white
and we should specify

Frankly, there is nothing much one can say
about it.

Synopsis
The eyes say what the mouth
does not. After researching,
thinking and experimenting,
I created this short animation
trying to understand the
fundamentals of visual perception. We have a journey
to make in order to create
our own perception of the
world around us and then to
discover the world within us.
The eye, which represents
everyone’s eyes, unconsciously or consciously
chooses what to save from
the journey and with whom
to interact. There is a whole
universe hidden behind our
eyes...
Eleni Chandriotou
Eleni is in her final year in the
Fine Arts Department of the
University of Nicosia. Her
work includes photography,
video, collages, drawing and
animation. She is passionate about animation, and is
experimenting with different
techniques both handmade
and digital.
Synopsis
In a planet of free will,
dominated by war and
hatred, the source of all
that exist is incarnated in
a person called Serafim.
His purpose is to help the
people achieve the highest
of their abilities, in order to
stop the never ending war.
He explains the reason for
his arrival while telling the
story of the creation of all
that is. He states that the
origin of light and darkness
is the same. Both created
from the divine to coexist,
and maybe the reason
for their existence is not
to fight each other, but to
work together.

Synopsis
Cluster is a short animated
film about the life of a
young adult suffering from
cluster headaches. He
struggles not only with his
pain but also with loneliness
and depression. This also
illustrates the isolated life
and detached being of an
individual with a serious
problem. The problem
is defined and judged
by a world that does not
understand, and labelled
as ‘a headache’. It shows
how the demon cluster has
taken everything he loves
away and stripped him of
his desire to live. Finally, he
confronts the demon the
only way he feels he can.
