CIVIC &
CULTURAL
We design cultural environments that balance
functionality with timeless beauty. Simultaneously
educational and uplifting, our museums and cultural
centers become symbols of the time in which they
were built and the information they contain. These are
buildings that serve their users and communities today
and well into the future.

Shanghai Science and Technology Museum
Shanghai, China
In the midst of booming development in Shanghai, Shanghai ScienceLand
Development Company held an international design competition for a
new science center. RTKL’s winning 88,258-SM museum is an educational
institute that encourages continued investment in technology as a vehicle for
the city’s economic success. With its futuristic, highly symbolic design, the
new civic place teaches, entertains and inspires.

National Hellenic Museum
Chicago, Illinois, United States
The National Hellenic Museum, located in Chicago, is the heart of Hellenic
history, culture and arts for the United States.
To meet the needs of a growing
collection and expanded staff and
services, the museum commissioned a
new 40,000 SF facility to house exhibit
spaces, a library, educational center
and administrative offices.
Inspired by the Greek Key, the ancient
Greek symbol of unity and infinity,
the museum’s glass and steel form is
expressed as a modern representation
of innovative Greek architecture
through the ages. A key feature of the
new museum is a dramatic sky-lit east/
west staircase that symbolizes the
Greek immigrant experience from the
past to the present. The building is
seeking LEED Silver certification and
will incorporate the latest in sustainable
design technology including glazing,
lighting, a green roof and HVAC
systems to create an environmentally
responsible building.

China Science and Technology Museum
Beijing, China
Located on the north end of Beijing’s Olympic Park, the new China Science
and Technology Museum improves China’s foundation for science and
technology education and inspires a new generation of enthusiasts.
RTKL’s design scheme for the 102,000SM museum creates an architectural
dialogue that combines the scientific
thinking of the ancient Chinese with the
advances of modern technology.
Drawing inspiration from childhood
puzzle games, in which each piece
of the puzzle exists as a fractional,
yet integral component of an overall
picture, the building’s architecture hints
at the concepts of interconnectivity,
integrity and ultimate oneness. These
metaphorical references manifest
themselves in the form of a giant
geometric cube, composed of a series
of interlocked building blocks that
fit together like pieces of a puzzle.
The museum features exhibitions,
conference facilities, classrooms and
training areas, as well as retail, food
venues and 3D and 4D simulation
theaters.

Washington, D.C., United States
As the seat of the nation’s legislative branch, the U.S. Capitol building is
a highly recognizable and popular tourist stop in Washington, DC. RTKL
designed a 54,000-SM visitor center to showcase the significance and history
of this symbolic building and accommodate the growing spatial needs of

2010 PRESIDENTIAL CITATION
FOR SUSTAINABLE DESIGN
American Institute of Architects,
Washington DC
1225 Connecticut Avenue NW
Washington, D.C., United States
Ideally situated on Connecticut Avenue, one block from Dupont Circle, the
newly renovated 1225 Connecticut Avenue office building repositions the
landmark site with a state-of-the-art, LEED Platinum Core & Shell facility.
The client commissioned RTKL with
full building renovations that included
replacing the exterior, reconfiguring the
core, and redesigning the lobby. The
primary goals were to create a modern
building that would be compatible
with the surrounding historic context,
achieve approval from DC’s Historic
Preservation Office and attain LEED
certification.
RTKL’s design achieves each of these
goals while simultaneously honoring
the historic church that once occupied
the site. A tower added to the northwest
corner of the building subtly references
the church’s iconic bell tower and pays
tribute to its historic context. The new
facade features a glazed curtain wall
divided into six vertical segments that
maximizes natural light. Horizontal bays
guide the eye to the adjacent historic
structures and reinforce scale and
contextual compatibility. The project
boasts a fully-planted green roof that
underpins its LEED Platinum rating.

In the heart of a former fishing village turned thriving metropolis, RTKL was
commissioned to design City Crossing, a 77,000-SM world-class mixed-use
development with an appealing mix of retail, residential, and hospitality
options.
The business-oriented northern section
of the development contains a 30-story
class-A office tower, primary metro
station, and tree-lined urban park. It is
linked to the middle section by a sixlevel retail and entertainment center
that houses international retailers,
a multiplex cinema, a supermarket,
and an Olympic-size skating rink. The
middle section contains the bulk of the
development’s additional retail and
entertainment options, and progresses
into the southern division through a
series of landscaped plazas, water
features, and pedestrian-friendly
streetscapes. Conceived as an urban
neighborhood, the southern section
of the project showcases a 300-room
hotel and terraced, lower-height
residential buildings that offer scenic
views of the surrounding landscape.

more than just additional retail space.
Landscaping, detailing and a glass
spiral culminating in skylights provides
a distinctive landmark identity and a
front door to the project. A secondphase entertainment zone at the
center’s northern end provides another
entry with direct access to cinemas,
restaurants and other entertainment
venues. The existing eight-screen
cinema is expanded to 19 screens
on two levels, and two new parking
structures increase capacity from 5,600
to 8,000 cars, accommodating the
scores of new customers attracted to
the revamped center.

Metropolis
Moscow, Russian Federation
Prominently located in Russia’s capital city, Metropolis, a 315,000-SM
retail and office development, represents a new generation of commercial
development for a burgeoning region of Moscow.
The design team for Metropolis had
two goals: to introduce a modern
mixed-use environment that supports
around-the-clock activity while also
creating a sophisticated space that
fits into the local setting. Inspired by
the energy of the urban environment,
the design of Metropolis mimics an
open-air street scene. Retail corridors
that resemble shopping boulevards
employ colors, patterns and finishes
to transform individual storefronts into
dynamic facades. Various architecture
details continue the aesthetic of an
outdoor lifestyle center including a
grand plaza and garden that form a
junction between the retail component
and three office buildings. With close
proximity to public transportation,
Metropolis is a celebrated extension of

Paradise Center
Sofia, Bulgaria
Named Bulgaria’s retail building of the year in 2013, Paradise Center is
Sofia’s landmark retail and leisure destination, designed to showcase the
surrounding landscape and provide a contemporary, lush backdrop for
internationally renowned brands.
The design concept for Paradise
Center is the synergy between man
and nature, which is embodied in the
logo of the project and in every detail
of the building itself. Conveniently
located adjacent to current and planned
transport links, Paradise Center
connects Sofia’s affluent residential
communities south of the downtown
area with the commercial heart of the
city. The building has been designed to
address this connection with dynamic
architecture that both references the
city and maximizes views toward the
city’s famed Vitosha Mountains.
Drawing inspiration from the center’s
name, a centrally located atrium garden
provides a green heart to the scheme,
complete with dramatic, landscaped
water features, green walls and
cascading planting. Outdoor terraces
house leisure offerings and a blend
of food court and premium dining are
located in box-like structures facing the

The Heart Hospital Baylor Plano
Plano, Texas, United States
The Heart Hospital is Situated on an asymmetrical site with stringent height
and setback restrictions. Thus RTKL created a compact design that conveys
the hospital’s advanced nature through the interplay of forms and materials
not usually found in healthcare design.
For this specialty hospital, RTKL
was asked to design an upscale,
hotel-like facility that would attract
discerning patients able to choose
their care provider. RTKL responded
with a design that facilitates patient
convenience while fostering operational
excellence. Functionally, the hospital
design designates each patient floor
to a different cardiac profile. Largescale patient rooms feature amenities
such as family zones with wireless
connectivity and work spaces, and 24/7
in-room dining ordered electronically
from a chef-created menu. The
project’s success was apparent
immediately. Soon after completion,
RTKL implemented its expansion plan

Community Hospital North Expansion
Indianapolis, Indiana, United States
RTKL was asked to design their one of the largest and most advanced
women’s and children’s hospitals in North America. When it opened the
hospital’s all-private NICU and pediatric suites made Community North one
of the first U.S. hospitals to invest in this care model.
In addition to space for parents to
always accompany their children, each
room is equipped with state-of-the-art
digital information technology, security
and communication systems. The more
private and restful environment has
resulted in improved infection control,
nursing care and patient outcomes.
As a woman’s facility, the design
approach focused on creating visual
transparency, ease of wayfinding and
positive distractions, including a gallery
of work by local artists and craftsmen.
These works were funded by the
hospital’s foundation and involved
the local community in the project’s
development. Additionally, RTKL

San Antonio Military Medical Center
Fort Sam Houston, Texas, United States
Embarking on a new era of world-class military hospitals, the U.S. Army
Corps of Engineers chose RTKL to design the Department of Defense’s
largest inpatient facility. The fast-track project is part of a pilot program
incorporating successful private-sector design and operational practices.
For this 1 million SF major expansion
and renovation, RTKL helped the Corps
successfully establish new benchmarks
in quality care and operational
excellence. This fast-track project
consolidates medical care for both
army and air force military personnel
and their families on one campus.
The hospital includes the DoD’s only

Seoul St. Mary’s Hospital
Seoul, Korea, Sotuh/Republic of
The new 1.9 million SF and 1,200-bed academic hospital takes the Catholic
Medical Science Complex a leap forward in being a specialized medical
center. It is the largest healthcare facility set on the Catholic Church model.
Although construction had
commenced, RTKL was retained to
introduce operational and aesthetic
improvements within the original
design’s building footprint. This
somewhat unusual timing stemmed
from the importance our client placed
on creating a leading medical center
for research, education, diagnosis,
and treatment in an exceptionally
comfortable environment. Through
a highly collaborative process, RTKL
proposed reworking the patient floors
from a purely five-bed ward layout to
a more flexible design enabling fivebed, two-bed, or one-bed wards per the
future discretion of Catholic Medical
Center. As the design advisor, RTKL
also redesigned the building skin to
introduce a more upscale contemporary
appearance in collaboration with local
architect Samoo.

The 30,000-SF plaza adjacent to Miami’s prestigious Brickell Avenue
is intended to rival Rockefeller Plaza in New York City and RTKL was
commissioned to design its landmark mixed-use development defined by
two high-rise towers.
Designed to meet LEED Gold standards,
the first phase of the development
consists of a 40-story office tower
with parking and the second phase
features a 68-story mixed-use tower.
Retail space is located at the base,
with parking, office space, a 300room hotel and luxury condominiums

work together to form the Poyang

driving economic development.

Edelman Public Relations
Washington, D.C., United States
RTKL provided interior design services for a 43,000 SF phased-in-place
renovation for Edelman Public Relations worldwide. The goal was to create
an open space with an airy feel and that would promote team interaction and
creativity.
To achieve a light and open feel,
sidelights were placed in both
perimeter and interior offices, varied
lighting was installed, and abundant
natural light was brought into the
space. RTKL eliminated long, visually
uninteresting hallways replacing
them with wide, curving corridors in
warm, bright colors and subtle textural
variations. Open teaming areas are
augmented with small, private meeting
and phone rooms.
Rich, unique materials are used
throughout, including silk wall
upholstery, multi-hued paints, specialty
glass, and black lace stone countertops.
Custom-designed décor cables
supporting a hanging glass logo and
a custom conference room table are
signature elements within the space.

RTKL was tasked with transforming a dense, urban site on the edge of
Austin’s Central Business District into a world-class residential building.
Austin, Texas, United States
Taking cues from the natural beauty
and social grace of the butterfly that
passes over the city during its annual
migration to Mexico, the Monarch
inspires a new kind of residential
environment—one that highlights
aesthetics, social connection and highquality amenities.
The strategy hinges on the client’s
target demographic: stylish individuals
with an appreciation for Austin’s
energy and attitude. The design team
utilized the same branding principals as
hospitality environments by translating
the Monarch image into a complete
design concept—architecturally,
experientially and programmatically.
From the cyber café and Wi-Fi lounge
to the gourmet kitchens and spa-like
bathrooms that populate units, the
Monarch boasts a comprehensive
lifestyle environment that is
distinctively Austin.
