It’s a place to have social interactions, make friends, learn new skills and take on new challenges. At Eggleston we empower people with disabilities through education, training and employment. Now more than ever, there is a growing need for community based disability services like Eggleston even as traditional funding from state and national resources is decreasing. This past year we have continued to make improvements to the infrastructure of our company, carefully allocating resources and personnel. Our document services division continues to expand and offer valuable services to a broad base of customers. We continue to improve our vehicle donation program, maximizing the value of each donation and providing meaningful employment for individuals who get the vehicles ready for auction. We have had improved results by initiating a “drive through” auction style, which makes it easier for bidders to preview and purchase vehicles. The proceeds from our auctions help us expand our programs. We also benefit from financial gifts from individuals who want to make sure we can continue to provide services. We expanded services to Virginia Beach with our addition of Beacon House, a program for persons with acquired traumatic brain injuries, and our community employment department continues to grow, placing persons with disabilities in private companies throughout the region. Of course none of our successes would be possible without the support of individuals in our community. There are many ways to support Eggleston, and we thank you for finding your own way to help. Sincerely, Paul Atkinson Mission Creating education training and employment opportunities Vision Eggleston envisions a community which values the abilities of all persons and endeavors to improve quality of life at home, work and at play Values Integrity, Choice, Empowerment and Quality Quality Statement Excellence in Action 2 Eggleston Fast Facts • Provides Services to over 800 individuals with disabilities each year • Operates 33 programs in 16 locations • Almost 3 million dollars of wages paid to persons with disabilities in 2012 • The largest employer of persons with disabilities in the region • Helped tens of thousands of individuals since 1955 • Placed over 150 people in community employment settings such as grocery stores, manufacturing and law firms • Have received the highest accreditation available from the Rehabilitation Accreditation Commission (CARF) The business fulfillment center on Military Highway is the home of four Eggleston business operations; Embroidery, Business Services, Document Shredding, and Document Conversion. A separate building behind the main building houses our Automotive Center. The facility, which formerly was an automotive dealership, is large, offering 24,000 square feet of work space. This has meant we have the capacity to expand work opportunities. Document shredding and conversion are growing businesses that provide steady work for persons with disabilities. This growing business line has provided job opportunities for many individuals with disabilities. DOMA Technologies of Virginia Beach joined with Eggleston, as a mentor in the establishment of our document conversion operation, and our facility now also serves as a model facility where Source America provides training for other organizations similar to Eggleston who provide employment for persons with disabilities and who want to start a document conversion business. The types of jobs we do in our assembly division are interesting and diverse. We have packed peanut brittle in boxes for retail sale at Wal-Mart and other stores, created unique gift items such as Alpha-Pic, which use photos to creatively depict a person’s name. Our teams can handle great volumes of work. Currently we are separating & folding cardboard corners for one of our customers, Mancon Inc. Pumpkins for sale at the Eggleston Garden Center at Tanners Creek Eggleston Retail Center at Tanner’s Creek The Eggleston Retail Center is a retail hub that includes the retail garden center, a pet care business, horticultural greenhouses and additional retail space leased to a restaurant, Café M. Let’s Go! Pet Care services include dog walking, bathing, doggy daycare and in-home pet care. . It also provides associates an opportunity to develop a therapeutic bond with the animals Associates at the greenhouses gain life skills training in a prevocational setting. The nursery is active in the community, and some of this year’s highlights include the Stockley Fall Festival, events at the Virginia Zoo, the Fred Heutte Center’s Spring Sale and providing hands-on education to high school students with disabilities at the Chesapeake Arboretum. We also operate a day support program at this location which focuses on building relationships with members in the community while providing supports to individuals that foster their independence. One example would be our unique partnership with the Yardhouse restaurant. Our day support associates travel to the Yardhouse to polish and roll silverware each morning. We are also continuing to work with Veteran Affairs to support an individual with traumatic brain injury. This location has also been the test location of E-track, a new software based documentation and tracking program that helps us with record keeping. 3 egglestonservices.org 2013 ANNUAL REPORT Automotive Center Civitan Acres Vehicles donated to Eggleston are serviced, cleaned and prepped by persons with disabilities and sold at an auction held twice monthly. Eggleston maximizes the value of the donation and all proceeds from donations help us expand our programs. The Eggleston Automotive Center administers Eggleston’s vehicle donation program. The operation employs approximately 31 individuals who clean, detail and perform minor repair on donated vehicles which are sold at our auctions which are held twice monthly. We also provide fleet maintenance for all of the organizations transportation vehicles. Automotive Center employees take pride in thoroughly cleaning the cars for auction. Unlike other donation programs who advertise locally, we have an in-house program and all of the proceeds stay in Hampton Roads. We strongly believe we are the ideal choice for someone who has a vehicle they are looking to donate. Other donations programs lend their name to an auction house in exchange for a portion of the proceeds from the sale. We have control of the entire process and make every effort to maximize the value of the donation. This effort offers a better product at auction to buyers, increases sale prices to fund Eggleston endeavors and translates to a higher tax deduction for our donors. Auctions are open to the public and held every other Saturday at our facility located at 3525 N. Military Highway. In the last 18 months we changed the way we run our auctions, now offering a “drive through” style auction. This is a superior way to present the vehicles offered for sale. We have also forged new relationships with local businesses. Going forward we anticipate increased business from retail customers, retail repair customers and fuel recovery clients. We are continually exploring ways to improve our auction and provide an exemplary experience for our donors. Minor mechanical repairs are sometimes needed and provide training for employees who love cars. Started by the Civitan Club in the 1950’s this 14-acre camp property was donated to Eggleston to ensure it would continue to serve the needs of persons with disabilities. The day support program helps persons with significant support needs and we provide daily activities to help develop and balance their social, physical and intellectual well-being. We strive to provide an experience that includes community inclusion activities off site. We strive to be part of the local neighborhood, and we serve some individuals who went to school together and live in the same area. This strengthens our local relationships and increases communication and interactions. In the past 12 months Civitan has been able to support a more fragile population for day support services. Currently Civitan is the only day program locally offering specific support skills such as g-tube feeding, suctioning and has a Licensed Practical Nurse on staff. During each summer an eight-week summer program gives campers a rich life experience and relieves caregivers at home by giving them some time off. Campers sleep in cabins, take trips, swim and participate in arts and crafts. Thanks to the support of the Tidewater Striders running club, the summer program has been partially supported for the last two years by the OK5K run. The race is held on the campus of Virginia Wesleyan College. The 2014 race is scheduled for June 7, 2014. Come out to run and you’ll help provide scholarships for summer campers. Civitan Acres summer camp offers lifetime memories and a needed rest for caregivers Eggleston’s OK5K event held at Virginia Wesleyan College benefits the summer camp program at Civitan Acres. Beacon House Let’s Go Let’s Go! Pet Care division, which offers dog washing. 4 Beacon House is a Clubhouse Program in Virginia Beach organized to support individuals living with the effects of brain injury. Participants at Beacon House enjoy interaction, the opportunity to form friendships and access the services and supports they need. Beacon House is a restorative environment for people who have had their lives drastically disrupted, providing the support of others to help with the process of recovery. Beacon House participants love to share duties cooking lunch each day and visitors are welcome on select days to tour the program and have a delicious lunch for only $2. 5 egglestonservices.org 2013 ANNUAL REPORT Laundry Services Mailroom and Custodial Our laundry services division processes millions of pounds of laundry annually. Ninety five percent of our customer base is federal customers, primarily the armed forces, and the remaining five percent of customers are from privately owned business. The laundry facility on Ingleside Road currently employs 60 individuals with disabilities. We also operate two different linen exchange services; one for Ft Lee Army Command near Petersburg, VA, the other at Joint Base Langley/ Ft Eustis located on the Peninsula. Additionally, a crew of eight employees provides a towel cleaning and exchange service for the S. Frank Blocker Jr., Family YMCA in Norfolk. This past year has brought some challenges: A large federal customer successfully built their own laundry facility so they could employ spouses and dependents of active duty soldiers. That customer represented about 1.5 million pounds of laundry annually. Because the majority of customers are federal customers, our ongoing challenges are funding for laundry services remaining steady as the government continues to struggle with our nation’s budget. We are learning to be creative and flexible due to dramatic fluctuations with incoming work load. On a positive note, some federal customers have increased their need for laundry services as a result of base realignment initiatives which helped to ease the loss of the 1.5 million pounds of laundry. We were excited to have a new ironer/ folder installed this past November which replaced a unit lost to a fire in 2012. It has been a solid year and we are always learning and looking to expand and improve our processes in order to provide the best laundry services possible. Eggleston operates mailroom services for the Army Corps of Engineers in Norfolk. Our manager and employees are valued and recognized by the ACOE staff. We also provide custodial services 5 days a week in 29 buildings located at Joint Expeditionary Base Little Creek-Fort Story. This year we expanded our custodial operations and the increased workload enabled us to hire a new custodian. Tidewater Drive Michael Johnson, of Eggleston’s laundry division lead a group of self-advocates to Washington, DC for the Grassroots Advocacy Conference hosted by Source America. Employees Paul Murray and Steven Blunt had the opportunity to talk about important issues with representatives in the offices of several U.S. Senators and Congressmen. Community Employment Eggleston provides employment for persons with disabilities by placing them into the community with private companies. In the last year Community employment specialists at Eggleston placed 72 individuals into local businesses such as Farm Fresh, The VirginianPilot and Blessed Sacrament church. Our community employment specialists match potential employees to understanding employers and we offer situational assessments, job coaching and support along the way. Food Services Eggleston’s food service division continues to shine. The Norfolk Naval Station Galley location once again received its 5-star accreditation. With over a 23 year history, Eggleston’s food service division provides food service support and employment for persons with disabilities at 9 different locations. Eggleston food service employees provide a clean and pleasant dining experience for military members dining in galleys on several bases in the Hampton Roads area. The total number of customer meals served last year was in excess of 2.2 million. Food Service is one of our longest running and most stable programs, having provided long term steady employment, generating millions of dollars of revenue and employing over 100 individuals. 6 what we do. Our OBRA program, which is also based at the Tidewater Drive facility, provides community-based services to people living in local nursing homes. Eggleston’s food service division continues to shine. The Norfolk Naval Station Galley location once again received its 5-star accreditation. With over a 23 year history, Eggleston provides food service support and employment for persons with disabilities at 9 different locations. Our Tidewater Drive location is the site for a day support program for a variety of individuals with significant support needs and we also run a specialized seniors program for persons over 50 years old. We host fun events on site for our participants including a talent show and a Veteran’s day picnic. Our staff at Tidewater Drive helps participants by meeting their individual needs and by giving them specific care and activities to help them enjoy the best quality of life. Participants love arts and crafts and participating in various cultural activities, and we often host tours which give the community an up-close look at Sarah Bonwell Hudgins Center The Sarah Bonwell Hudgins Center in Hampton is owned by the Sarah Bonwell Hudgins Foundation and operated by Eggleston. The 40 acre campus has 13 buildings and serves a variety of needs for person with intellectual and developmental disabilities. At the Sarah Bonwell Hudgins Center you will find Eggleston’s business fulfillment operation, and our document shredding operation. A year-round day support programs accommodates thirty-four individuals with a variety of disabilities and the program has a large concentration of associates with autism spectrum disorders. Eight of our associates here are enrolled in our seniors program. The Sarah Bonwell Hudgins Center is also the site of four residential homes, each with 6-8 residents, and a supportive Living apartment with two tenants. Also on campus is the Child Development Academy, a child day center which offers a full inclusion model allowing for both disabled and non-disabled children. Our staff is keenly focused on the families and children we serve. Each child is given individualized care, and we are continuously fostering and developing each child to their potential. Parents wanting to learn more, can visit the Academy’s website, or tour at their convenience. Henry Freeman and Brack Sessoms participate in the seniors program that created this handprint decorated American flag. In the coming months Eggleston will be expanding into commercial food production. This new venture will provide an opportunity to offer food production as well as packaging for customers. Fun Fact: Two of the earliest benefactors to the Sarah Bonwell Hudgins Center were Mr. and Mrs. Chester Carlson who became committed to helping persons with disabilities in 1963. Mr. Carlson was the inventor of the xerography process. We know the product today as Xerox. Eggleston Champions President’s award Corky Hopkins AAA Tidewater AAA Tidewater has been a catalyst for donations by encouraging service customers to donate cars when they decide they do not want to fix an older vehicle in AAA’s repair shop. They have distributed flyers and provided positive information to customers who may choose to donate a vehicle to Eggleston. Best Thrift Stores Best Thrift opened the doors on a new thrift store in the spring which donates a portion of its proceeds from sales to Eggleston. The thrift store has also been active in promoting employment for persons with disabilities and has hired several employees through Eggleston’s Community employment division as well as temporary workers through LINK staffing. Community Employment award Richard Harrell 8 Gold Merit Award The Yard House The Yard House in the Virginia Beach Town Center contacted Eggleston to see if employees would be able to come clean and roll and silverware each morning, and the program has been a success.
