leads to good
Half Marathons
W
elcome to another
Homeruns issue.
Well it has been another busy
month of running with lots of group
training and members running
events all over the country.
Several people ran the Sandy
Point half last Sunday with good
results reported on a near perfect
day.
Aprille has written two stories
on her brilliant performance in the
Gold Coast Half Marathon and
also her run around Uluru during
their family holiday to the Northern
Territory.
I ran in the Victorian Road
Runners Tan Time Trial and also
their Half Marathon both with very
pleasing results. As usual these
events were fantastic value and
well run, I highly recommend the
checkout www.vrr.org.au
Congratulations must also go to
Mick Beasley who after running
2nd twice came home in July with
the win. Mick has written a story
on how a month of Thursday track
sessions helped get him over the
line.
It is fantastic to see so many
new members joining the club
we recently have been joined by
Simon, Steve, Kat, and Toni all of
who have been regularly training
with us, please make yourself
known to them.
In November we will be having
elections for a new committee if
you would like to make yourself
available please speak to me or
any member of the committee.
The nomination form will be

Having been training with
these people regularly it gives
great satisfaction to see the
results we are all achieving.
I would really like to thank
everyone for their support and
enthusiasm coming along to
training nights in the middle
of Melbourne’s winter, it isn’t
always easy when the wind
blows icy rain at right angles.
Personally the 94 minutes
was a 10 year PB for me and I
could only be amazed at how
much strength I had at the
end, knowing it was due to all
those group runs at Newport
Lakes on a Sunday morning.
If anyone wants to truely
improve ther running and just
have fun on a Sunday morning
don’t hesitate to join us for a
run in the beautiful location.

A month of
Thursdays...
A
fter the February Handicap,
I spoke with Terry about
a number of things about the
morning’s entertainment ranging
from what to do about sore
calves (maybe try magnesium
powder) to the results. I
was losing places in the last
few hundred metres, and he
suggested I should attend the
track training sessions - working
on finishing speed. He was far
too polite to mention the more
fundamental problem - lack of
speed everywhere else as well.
At the time, Thursday nights
in Newport simply weren’t an
option. Work commitments
were intense, and working on
the other side of the city made
it difficult to get across in good
time. It was very much a case of

it) I made it
“Commute before quarter to five,
or after six thirty”, with project
deadlines effectively ruling out
the first option. Instead, I tried
some basic intenval training
on my own at the weekends going out hard for five minutes,
easy for five minutes, etc.,

but it wasn’t always clear
what the “quality” of this was
- and the heart monitor often
demonstrated that there was an
edge missing.
In the May handicap, Mark
overtook me coming in to the
penultimate bend, and I couldn’t
stay with him. And in June,
Aprille did the same at roughly
the same place, and I couldn’t
sprint past her at the end either. This was getting more than a
little tiresome, and now there
was the spectre of Peter having
a good excuse to get stuck into
my handicap for July - not that
he really needed the excuse. I
thought back to Terry’s remarks
- maybe the track sessions were
the way to go.
A few things had slotted into
place since then - in particular
the opening of the fifth lane on
the West Gate Bridge. Road
improvements don’t solve traffic
jams, they just move where
they occur. But wherever they’d
been moved to, it was no longer
on my route - at least not in the
evenings.
The first set of M1 upgrades
had taken all the Kingsway /
Bolte Bridge traffic off the West
Gate and given them their own
private jam on the new link road. While congestion still occurred
at all the various merges after
the tunnel and could still add half
an hour to the journey, the days
of queuing back on the Monash
all the way to Toorak Road had
become more the exception
than the rule.
Opening the fifth lane on the
bridge seems to have moved
these jams beyond the Todd
Road merge - partly I suspect to
where it goes from five to four
lanes at Williamstown Road, and
possibly to where the Western
Ring Road joins. The off ramp
to Williamstown road now flows
relatively smoothly and that is all
I care about.
Quietly gnashing my teeth in
the general direction of Aprille,
I decided to give the track a go
for July. As chance would have
it, this was one of the occasions
with five weeks between
handicaps, so I’d get four
sessions in - enough to work out
if they were for me or not. I turned up on the first
Thursday, not really knowing
what to expect. The only track
I’d run on before was a grass
track at school, and that was
once a summer when the sports
day mandated we had to run,
like it or not. And they were
usually done during daylight
hours.
The first surprise was the
warm-up - the slows laps I was
expecting, but the hundred
metre sprints? Maybe there’s
an idea to file away for future
handicaps. Then the intervals
started, in a sort of low key and
laid back way. “Slow runners off
first, leave when you think it’s
about right”. Slow - yep, that’s
me. Not quite the slowest, but
not far off.
That’s where it started to get
difficult. I didn’t (and still don’t)
have a clue how to pace myself
on a track, or what is a good
1200 metre pace for me. And
it doesn’t take much to go from
“this seems OK” over the first
100m to “OK, that was stupid”
by 200m. Normally I use my
heart monitor for feedback - I’ve
learnt the rates I can sustain,
and the ones I can’t. But on
Thursday evening in winter
it’s dark, and I couldn’t see it. So it was back to basics, and
listening to the body - with the
contradiction that the whole
purpose of the intervals is to
run at speeds which aren’t
comfortable and the body is
saying “No”.
So in the absence of light, it
was time for plan B. Start off
“reasonably” comfortable, and
as people overtake - and most
people did - I’d try to stay with
them as long as possible before
they disappeared off into the
gloom. And over time, try to
learn what a “good” pace felt
like and redefine “reasonably
comfortable”. Then Mark
decided to throw in an evening
of 400/ 800/ 1200/ 800/ 400 guaranteeing that each interval
had a different starting pace to
the previous one, and it was
back to square one.
So the times were, to put it
politely, erratic. Unlike some
of the club metronomes who
can rattle off consistent 1km
intervals within a second of
each other, mine had more in
common with chaos theory but with a discernable trend
that they slowed down over the
course of the session. However
the presence of faster runners
triggered my competitive side,
and took the session to a level
above anything I’d been able
to do on my own. Maybe there
was something in this track
thingy after all - even if I’d come
to the end of the second interval
without having any idea how I
was going to survive another
three.
By the fourth week, the biggest
battle was mental - whether or
not to turn up. The end of a
long week, feeling knackered,
needing a rest day, it was
cold and windy, knowing it’s
going to hurt, too much to do
at home - the reasons I was
coming up with why I should
skip the evening were endless. But spurred on by the vision of
Aprille (or at least the vision of
a wax doll of Aprille with pins
sticking out of it) I made it. The
running itself was relatively
straightforward after all that.
The test was the July
Handicap - was it going to prove
to have been worth it? I was
quietly delighted with the first
1.25km split, knowing I hadn’t
pushed too hard, but the real
bonus came on the final turn. The knowledge from Thursday
evenings that I could raise
the effort and sustain it for the
duration was a tremendous
confidence booster (as was
knowledge that Aprille was only
spectating this time). To my
satisfaction the final leg into
the wind was as fast as either
downwind leg, and the final time
achieved my target for the year
of breaking 24 minutes.
So on the evidence it looks
like Terry was right, and the
Thursday track sessions work. And with my suspiscions that
Peter is currently rubbing his
hands with malevolent glee as
he trashes my handicap, I guess
I’ve got a lot of mental battles
lined up on Thursday afternoons
for the remainder of the year...

No Subtitute for training
My Gold Coast Half Marathon
I
decided early this year that
after almost 12 months of a
range of injuries the Gold Coast
Half Marathon might be a good
one for getting myself back in
form. I wanted to beat my pb of
1:57:58 from 2009 and I knew
that my current training schedule
wasn’t going to do that for me. I
joined the Newport Lakes run
on Sunday mornings and used it
as part of my long run. I treated
it as a slow one because I am
so unstable on my feet and so
prone to tripping and rolling my
ankles that I always have to take
it easy there.
I also began to run with the
‘chicken shop’ group who are
all much faster and fitter than
me. I was very worried about
starting off at their speedy pace
right from the gun and so I
would always do a 5km warm
up, about 3km with them ,just
down to the bottom of North
rd and then a slow recovery
home. I could barely keep up,
let alone contribute to the nonstop conversation and carry on.
After about a month I extended
it just a bit more and went all
the way to the Anchorage! Still
huffing and puffing. Little by
little I reduced my warm up and
increased my run. A few weeks
before the half I was doing the
full 10k with them and even
managed to contribute my two
cents worth to the conversation.
I was and still am always just
beyond my comfort zone when I
am with them.
With this extra strength
and fitness I came with
quiet confidence to the June
handicap. My tight time
schedule that morning and my
2km warm up put me in the
right physical and mental state

to make it a quick one. By the
way, it is only these days that
I have come to appreciate the
benefit of a warm up – I never
realised how much difference
it makes. I complained to the
handicapper about my time,
this is par for the course. A bit of
healthy, jovial banter is always
good to fire Pete up and put him
in good spirits. I knew that Mike
was going to be a challenge but
I also knew that I probably had
a bit of a psychological edge
on him because he wouldn’t
have been expecting me. I knew
this would reduce his effort just
enough for me to get him while
his defences were down. His
effort was valiant, just as mine
was when Russell toyed with
me only a few months before,
almost at the same point on the
course.
The following weekend we
flew to the Gold Coast and I
lined up with 8000 other half
marathoners. It was so crowded
that I had to dodge and weave
almost until the end. I monitored
my energy level and speed all
the way. I was in such a state
of euphoria each time I looked
at the GPS – ‘How could I be
doing just over 5min pace???’,
I felt like I was flying effortlessly.
At about the 12km mark I was
still feeling pretty good and
wondered if perhaps I should
try and push it a little faster. I
thought better of it as I wanted to
finish well..
Run around
The Rock
I was pretty happy with the
decisions I made about my
nutrition preparation. I am a bad
drinker of fluid, especially water
even though I know that good
hydration plays a significant
part in aerobic capacity. As
such, I made sure I increased
my intake from about 3 days
out. I pretty much ate normally
and made sure that my meal
the night before was pasta. I
sipped endurance Gatorade
on Saturday and another bottle
in the couple of hours leading
up to the race. I don’t eat
breakfast and I wasn’t about
to change that on the day. I
did however start the morning
with a Hi 5 gel and another on
about 15min before the start.
Being the delicate petal that I
am, I didn’t want to upset my
tummy and I knew that straight
glucose was the best way to
put a nice storage of glycogen
on my muscles. I had planned
on having another 3 gels during
the race but only managed 2.
As a quick aside, those of you
who have troubles with a little
(or a lot) of bloating and ‘wind’,
particularly in the afternoon, may
have a very common problem
called fructose malabsorption
(I do). Many sports drinks and
gels, among other things, irritate
this condition as they contain
fructose. Gatorade doesn’t and
neither do the Hi 5 gels.
I was pretty happy with my
time of 1:49:02 and even though
at many times I felt held up by
the crowd, it probably helped
me to control my pace and
prevented me from blowing up. I
felt great right to the end.

E
arlier this year, over the
Easter school holidays,
Noel, myself and the kids did
a 16 day road trip through
the Northern Territory. We
flew to Darwin, picked up a
camper van and began to
make our way south. It took
me about a week to feel
comfortable running there but I
did eventually don my runners
to investigate the top end by
foot. Running in the morning is
definitely my preference which
was certainly a good thing up
there as it got a little warm by
mid morning.
Via Lichfield, Kakadu,
Katherine, Tennant Creek and
Alice Springs, we eventually
got to Uluru. Some of the
days definitely involved a lot
of driving but luckily the kids
were kept from tormenting each
other by the power of in-car
DVD screens (how on earth did
our parents manage without
them?). I had never been NT
and so wasn’t sure what to
expect of a large red rock. It
was without doubt an amazing
sight. Sunset and sunrise were
not to be missed and thanks to
the camper we just had to wake
the kids and could head off still
in pjs. Breakfast and a cuppa
on a brisk morning at the base
of The Rock was undoubtedly a
magical experience. I took the
opportunity while it was cool
to run the 9.4km track along
the base. I started out with my
head phones on and the talk
back that Noel had put onto his
iphone. I very quickly realized
that any noise other than the
birds and the silence was
preventing me from being in the
moment. I took my time and
savoured every step. My return
to the kids entailed a quick tag
and off Noel went on his lap of
Uluru. It was a beautiful run.

Hobos Training Runs
Improve your running, health and fitness
T
raining consistently is the core
ingredient to improving your
running and unfortunately it is difficult
for many of us to keep our enthusiasm
on our own.
The Hobos has had a great culture of
training in groups and this is something
we are striving to get back.
We have three groups training during
the week and I am pleased to say
numbers are growing every week,
unfortunately the track is closed until
the end of May so we will be working
on Thursday night intervals on the bike
path.
The Sunday morning runs at
Newport Lakes are proving very
popular and we are getting people
of several different levels of fitness
running between 5k and 15k.
Tuesday Nights from 6.15pm we
have a group that runs 7km on a run
from the Newport club rooms to the
Timeball and back.
This can be run at the pace of your
choice from easy to a serious tempo
run.
Thursday Nights from 6.15pm you
can either run 7km to the Time ball
as per Tuesday or join a track interval
session where you concentrate on
learning to improve your pace and
stamina. Putting you through sessions
such as 5x 800 metres or maybe
10x 400 metres certainly allow you to
discover a new side to running. These
sessions on the track are proving very
popular.
Sunday Mornings a group meets at
8am at Newport Lakes for a bush run
up to 15k or further for those who are
keen for more details contact Mark on

M

improving this year he
saw the need to improve
even more if he was to
grab glory.
After joining the group
in track training for a
month he was ready and
sure enough he showed
he had gained the
necessary speed to hold
off all challenges.
A new PB saw
Mick finish ahead of
Aiden Keranen who
also continued great
improvement which also
netted him a PB.
Yet again just behind
Aiden was his mum Sara
in another impressive
time
Sue Hennessey came
in 4th with an AGPB
to continue along with
Damien Arnold in 5th with
the fastest time of the
day 18.25 to challenge
for the Greenwich Cup.
While Mick has again
strengthened his position
in the Cup with yet
another run gaining over
30 points there is still a
long way to go.
