Rabbit moved into a small
hotel room above the bar.
The room was tiny. It only
had a sink. Rabbit used it
as a kitchen, a toilet,
and a sink.
The other animals that
lived there were crazy. The
management took pity on
the ones who were unable to
pay on time. They were always
taking pity on Rabbit. His
financial situation was as unreliable as the crazies’ because
of the Sloth. That’s why he stayed. The crazies had no
choice. No one else would have them. They bothered other
animals.

Rabbit learned to
like most of the
Crazies, except
for the ones that
smelled. Though
he became friends
with them, he was
instructed never to
let them into the bar.
Within a short while Rabbit became
a very well-respected doorman.
Even though he was much smaller
than most of the animals and his
teeth and claws were insignificant
by comparison, he was still wellrespected.
Every week the
Sloth would throw
a party. On those
evenings Rabbit
was relieved of
his door duties and paid to
perform. One evening the
Sloth hired a Coyote to work
at the door in Rabbit’s place.
Rabbit had to explain himself
to enter. The Coyote was very
rude to him.

Later in the evening Rabbit danced with Vy. It was his
most powerful performance. Before it could reach its end,
the entire room burst into a frenzy.
Rabbit stood on the bar and watched as it happened.
He focused his attention on the Coyote who was of no use
to anyone. The Coyote tried to hide, but was torn to shreds.
Even if Rabbit had wanted to help him, he couldn’t, for his
feet were tied to Vy’s. All he could do was stand on the
bar and watch, waiting for the room to turn on him, which
it never did.

When it was
over, many of
the animals
had been
eaten.
It was agreed that none of
this would have happened
if Rabbit were at
the door.
He took this to mean that the entire event was his fault,
which in a way it was. What was really meant was that he
could have handled the situation. When he heard this he
kept his
mouth shut,
more out of
shock than
anything else,
but it turned
out to be the
best thing
he could
have done.
