2 0 1 3 E D I T I O N Summer Reading O N M A R T H A’ S V I N E YA R D For Students Entering 1st Grade New Favorites Here are some of our newest favorites for 1st grade! “The more you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you’ll go.” -- Dr. Seuss Dear Parents, Emeraldalicious by Victoria Kann Summer vacation is here (wahoo!) but it is also a wonderful time to READ! Many first graders are still acquiring pre-reading skills and sight word vocabulary. It is therefore important that students read books that are not too hard and not too easy, but are right at their level. The five finger test is a great way to determine if a book is just right -- if you can count five words on a page that you don’t understand, it isn’t a good fit for you. Steam Train, Dream Train by Sherri Duskey Rinker Summer is also the perfect time for students to explore books that they choose and are interested in. Here are some summer reading tips for parents and students: The Lucky Ducklings by Eva Moore • • • • • • • This Is Not My Hat by Jon Klassen I’m Bored by Michael Ian Black Back to Front and Upside Down by Claire Alexander Baby Bear Sees Blue by Ashley Wolff Set aside regular reading / read aloud time Visit the local library -- they have wonderful summer activities! Read to your children and let them read to you Parents -- read for pleasure in front of your children Allow choice in reading Pack a book wherever you go! Encourage and help your child succeed with reading “Children who do NOT read in the summer can lose two to three months of reading development.…kids who DO read tend to gain a month of reading proficiency.” -Allington, Richard L. and McGill-Franzen, Anne. (2003). Created May 2013 by Ms. Lambacher, Media Specialist at the Edgartown Elementary School on Martha’s Vineyard in Massachusetts. It was influenced by ideas from the staff at the Edgartown Elementary School, and was largely inspired by the Waltham Public Schools’ summer reading newsletter. Happy reading! Books About 1st Grade The Night Before First Grade by Natasha Wing Penny’s excitement over the start of first grade turns to sadness when her best friend is placed in a different classroom. Hello, First Grade Emily’s Art Starring First Grade by Peter Catalanotto by Miriam Cohen Emily enters the first grade art contest, but gets upset when the judge interprets her entry as a rabbit instead of a dog. Jim learns to overcome his disappointment in not getting the part he wanted in a play, but helps out a friend who has stage fright. (Part of a series) First Grade Jitters by Robert Quackenbush by Joanne Ryder Mrs. Lee’s class decides to call themselves the first grade bunnies after their class pet rabbit. Not knowing what will be expected of him in first grade, a boy gets nervous before his first day of first grade. First Grade Stinks! by Mary Ann Rodman Haley wishes she were back in Kindergarten, until she realizes the good things about being a first grader. Independent Reading Bob Books Incoming 1st graders should be practicing reading on their own. Bob Books are a great way to increase reading ability and sight words.
