Pillar Society For several years, the Marshall Community Foundation has been aware that very generous people in our community have included the Foundation in their wills or have arranged for another form of Planned Giving to the Foundation to help ensure our town’s future. The Foundation wanted to find a way to recognize and thank these thoughtful people. To meet this need, the Pillar Society was created, named for the pillars of our renowned Brooks Memorial Fountain. This Society will provide a lasting benefit to the Marshall Area for generations to come. To be informed of the Foundation’s mission, of the way the Foundation intends to use donated resources and of its capacity to use donations effectively for their intended purposes. To be informed of the identity of those serving on the Foundation’s Board of Trustees, and to expect the board to exercise prudent judgment in its stewardship responsibilities. To have access to the Foundation’s most recent financial statements. To be assured their gifts will be used for the purposes for which they were given. To receive appropriate and timely acknowledgement and recognition. To be assured that information about their donations is handled with respect and confidentiality. To expect that all relationships with individuals representing organizations of interest to the donor will be professional in nature. To be informed whether those seeking donations are volunteers, employees of the organization or hired solicitors. To have the opportunity to delete their names from Foundation mailing lists, and to be assured that donor lists will not be sold, rented or exchanged with individuals or organizations not affiliated with the Foundation. To feel free to ask questions when making a donation and to receive prompt, truthful and forthright answers. Compliments of Abbey Utkes Charitable Instruments Every donor is special. Each individual, family or organization we work with has unique charitable interests and financial circumstances. We help donors make the most of both by doing good work in our community. Outright Gift You can make a gift of cash, stocks, bonds, real estate or personal property to your community foundation. Your gift qualifies for maximum charitable benefit under state and federal law. Bequest You can designate a gift or portion of your estate to your community foundation, and in some cases, receive a substantial reduction in federal gift and estate taxes. Compliments of Abbey Utkes Gift Annuity You can make a gift of cash or property to your community foundation now, get immediate tax benefits, and ensure that you or a loved one receives fixed quarterly or annual income payments for life. Charitable Remainder Trust You can place cash or property in a trust that pays annual income to you (or another named beneficiary) for life. After your death, the remainder of the trust transfers to your community foundation and is placed in a charitable fund you select. You receive tax benefits the year you establish your trust. Charitable Lead Trust You can place cash or property in a trust that pays a fixed amount to your community foundation for the number of years you select. Once this period ends, the assets held by the trust are transferred to the beneficiaries you name. In some cases, you receive a substantial reduction in federal gift and estate taxes. How to include the foundation in your will. It is not complicated to include a bequest to the Marshall Community Foundation in your will. You may instruct your legal counsel to include the following in your instrument: “I give, devise and bequeath the following described assets which _______ (are the subject of the bequest; for example, a stated sum or the residue of the estate or a percentage of the residue of the estate) to the Marshall Community Foundation, a Michigan nonprofit corporation. This gift shall be known as the _______ Fund. (You choose the name of your fund) If you want your bequest to be applied to an area of charitable interest or to a specific organization, add the following: “This fund shall Compliments of Todd Turner be devoted to the support of _______.” Opportunity to Make a Difference Turn $56 into $400 Overnight When you make a $400 gift to the Marshall Community Foundation for any of our endowed funds, it will cost you far less, thanks to Michigan’s generous State Tax Credit. After the state tax credit and federal tax deductions, a $400 gift may only cost a married couple in the 30% tax bracket $56.00! Of course, even more rewarding are the good works your gift makes possible. A gift to the Marshall Community Foundation will be a gift For good. For ever! INDIVIDUAL COUPLE $200 $400 Less MI State Tax Credit ($100) ($200) Less federal deduction ($72) ($144) Total tax savings $172 $344 Your actual cost $28 $56 Your gift Based on 25% income tax bracket, 50% is the maximum Michigan State Tax Credit. The federal tax savings assumes that the savings in Michigan taxes will reduce the amount of the State income tax deduction on the federal return of the following year. Community foundation tax credits are in addition to those available for donations to Michigan colleges and universities, public libraries, and public broadcasting stations, or Michigan homeless shelters and food banks. Donors should consult their advisors to assure they receive the best deduction that applies.
