The Saluting Battery,
Valletta
Sited at Valletta’s best vantage
point under the Upper Barracca
Gardens and overlooking the
Grand Harbour, the Saluting
Battery is still equipped with
original cannon. In the past, it
served both to defend the harbour and as an official ceremonial platform from where gun
salutes would be fired to honour
visiting dignitaries or vessels to
Malta. For hundreds of years, it
also doubled as the official public
time marker from where a gun
was fired at sunrise, noon and
sunset to provide the public with
the exact hour of the day. The
first and last soundings indicated
the time when all town gates
where to be opened or closed.
The noon-day round was meant
for mariners to calibrate their
timepieces on board for navigational reasons. After all these centuries, the old tradition of firing a
gun at noon (12pm) still takes
place here daily. Guided tours of
the battery are offered before
and after the display at 11am and
12.30pm. Open: Daily 10am and
1.30pm. Free transport from this
site to the Malta at War Museum
and Fort Rinella leaves daily at
12.15 and 1.15pm.
Fort Rinella, Kalkara
Fort Rinella is Malta’s only historic live-museum. It is a unique
example of late 19th century
military engineering in being
built as a steam-powered
mechanical war machine to
house and power the world’s
largest gun ever made – the
Armstrong 100-ton gun. This gun still survives in this fort. In its
time, it could fire a one-ton shell up to a distance of 8-miles at
which range it could pierce 21inches of ship armour.
This fort has been painstakingly restored by volunteers back to
its original state. A historical re-enactment takes place here daily
at 2.30pm recreating aspects of the daily life of the Victorian garrison. This includes live cannon and musket firing. A brand new
audiovisual is also available which outlines the colourful history of
the fort and its monstrous gun. Open: Daily between 10.00am
and 5.00pm. Guided tours and film shows are offered on the
hour till 1.00pm after which there will be the historical re-enactment. Directions: Bus No.4 to Kalkara from Valletta bus station or
follow signs to Three Cities and local signs to fort.

Bloodline
Once again, the Director s
of Galler y G have come
up with a wonderful idea;
that of hosting an exhibition which demands the
question: hereditar y?...or
coincidence? Most probably a mixture of both is
what produces genius

example – in fact seven

De-Coding Beauty
Ar t exhibition by George
Scicluna. This exhibition shows
sketches dating back to the
early 90’s when George’s distinctive style was beginning to
emerge. He then moved on to
large-scale monochrome paintings that depict the statues of
the Old Masters. Characteristic
of the next period is a series of
paintings ‘composition of a girl’
which carry the style further on.
Following this phase, one then
arrives at the most recent paintings where colour becomes
more prominent.

Captivating Gozo!
Small and beautiful as it is, Gozo cannot be seen in just one day.
As a place to relax, ‘hang out’ and live the good life the island
is unsurpassed. After you set foot on Gozo, you’ll know why
you need more than just a day to savour it’s leisurely charms.
The more you enjoy your visit to Gozo, the more likely you
are to return, and to recommend the island to others.
If you are intrigued by this beautiful island’s ability to
create ‘Gozo fanatics’ like ourselves, then plan a visit.
We always stay for more than just a day. It’s the secret
hideaway of all Maltese. Which is why we would prefer
to leave it undiscovered by you. But it’s in our nature to
share the best we have with visitors.

Yellow Orange
Yellow Orange is a tale about friendship in the most difficult
of situations. The Yellows and the Oranges are separated by
a wall since days immemorable. Then one of them makes a
move, resulting in ripples that could finally lead to the
removal of the wall. Targetting children between 7 and 12,
Yellow Orange is a fantastic journey into trust and discovery,
where the characters have to trust the good in each to overcome their own shortcomings and prejudices. Unifaun

The Infiorata
The Infiorata’ consists of a carpet made of fresh flowers
petals and leaves cut in small
pieces arranged together to
form various thematic designs.
The ‘Infiorata’ is an old tradition, the oldest one originating
in ‘Gerano’ the twinned village
of Gharb which is found in the
outskirts of Rome Italy. This tradition in Gerano dates back
to around the 17th Century.
Another particularity of this
infiorata is that it takes place in
the village feast dedicated to
the “Madonna del Cuore’ and
not like other localities, which
takes place in the feast of the
Corpus Domini. The Gharb
Local Council signed a twinning agreement with the

Gardens
Upper and Lower
Barrakka Gardens
Two gardens, facing the Grand
Harbour in Valletta, both offering a panoramic view. The
Upper Barrakka Gardens offer
the best view since they’re
more centered and at a much
higher level. It was the gift of an
eighteenth-century knight. The
Anglican Garrison Church partly intrudes upon it. The garden
is built on top of a demi-bastion. The Lower Barrakka
Gardens are part of St
Christopher’s Bastion and have
a view of the harbour. At their
center is a small Greek-style
folly built in memory of
Governor Sir Alexander Ball,
who led the siege against the
French in 1800 and subsequently became Britain’s first
civil commissioner of Malta.The
French during the 1798-1800
siege cultivated these gardens.
Argotti Botanical Gardens
In 1805 the British governor
appointed a Carmelite friar,
Malta’s first professor of natural
history. He assembled the
plants in Floriana’s Mall and 50
years later they were moved to
the site of the present Argotti
Gardens, then the preserve of
a deceased knight.
Buskett Gardens
No more than 2kms from
Dingli Cliffs, sitting under the
watchful eye of Cardinal Grand
Master de Verdalle’s summer
retreat, are Buskett Gardens.
Panoplies of foliage spread their
shade over the valley floor, providing a welcome respite
against the heat of summer.
There are orange and cypress
trees, irregular cacti, leguminous
carobs, aromatic firs and the
Judas tree, which foretells
Easter with its pink blossom
(this is said to be the tree from
which Judas hung himself).
Hastings Gardens
From the National Museum of
Fine Arts, it is well worth taking
a stroll through the nearby
Hastings Gardens, named after
a former Governor General,
the Marquess of Hastings
(1824-26).
Gardens
Palazzo Parisio
Gardens
These privately owned gardens
rank amongst the finest in
Malta and have seasonal appeal
all year round. The two classic,
baroque walled gardens are a
charming mixture of Italian
symmetry and Mediterranean
colour and perfumes.
