UC San Diego Student Life Fall 2009 – Highlights & Attendance Report ASSOCIATED STUDENTS ADMINISTRATION (AS) Media Guidelines Task Force The Associate Vice President of Student Organizations Andrew Ang chaired a task force comprised of A.S. members to review the A.S. funding guidelines for student media organizations. During the Fall Quarter, the task force reviewed its existing guidelines, and they also researched other campus funding policies. The committee proposed some new criteria, and they will be submitting the changes to the A.S. Council in early Spring Quarter. SRTV Management Changes The Associate Vice President of Student Services Meredith Madnick instituted several changes to the SRTV charter and the organizational structure of the SRTV managers. Meredith worked to expand the job functions of the SRTV leaders, created an additional station manager position, and developed some new work‐study positions for students to become involved in the operation of the television station. First Fall The Vice President of Student Life Ricsie Hernandez created a new program for freshmen and transfer students called “First Fall.” Similar to the format of Welcome Week, a website was created for departments to advertise programs that were geared for first‐year students. In addition, A.S. allocated funds to help departments cover the costs of the events. Although attendance was small at many of the First Fall events, the structure is in place to expand the First Fall program next year. Student Sustainability Collective The Student Run Sustainability Collective allocated $40,000 for students to develop “green initiative” projects. Many of the students worked with faculty as an additional resource for the project. Some of the “green initiative” projects included urban farms and a biofuel project. In addition, SSC developed events around theme months. For example, during the month of November, the students sponsored events around “Water Awareness Month.” A.S. External Affairs The A.S. External Affairs Office sponsored numerous action projects that focused on making Cal Grants mandatory and expressing opposition to fee increases. The students from A.S. External Affairs organized various grassroots lobbying campaigns on the day of action events. San Diego Presidents’ Council A.S. President Utsav Gupta created a presidents’ council comprised of student government presidents from all San Diego universities and community colleges. The presidents will be meeting on a regular basis to discuss issues that impact all the campuses. The first meeting was held on January 12. A.S. Visibility Campaign A.S. President Utsav Gupta charged a task force to explore additional ways for A.S. to improve its visibility efforts. During the month of October, the A.S. visibility committee coordinated a press conference to publicize A.S. Council initiatives to the student body. In addition, A.S. hosted a meet‐and‐greet event and a town hall meeting. CENTER FOR STUDENT INVOLVMENT (CSI) Student Flyers Student Flyers is the weekly email newsletter about events and involvement opportunities for students. 21,395 separate individuals made 33,737 visits to the Student Flyers website during the month of September 2009 (74% of subscribers), and 21,154 separate individuals made 46,215 visits to the Student Flyers website during the month of October 2009. A special edition of Student Flyers was sent to 6225 incoming freshman and transfer students on Sept. 11, 2009. This edition was viewed by 6,317 new students – nearly 99% of those receiving the email visited the website. The Welcome Week Student Flyers issue was sent on Sept. 18, 2009 to all registered undergrad and grad students, and subscribed staff and faculty. The issue was viewed by 16,094 individuals – out of a total mailing list of 28,723 email addresses. The typical number of individual viewers each week has leveled off at more than 9,000 which is an increase of more than 2,000 over last year, and more than double of previous years. Passport to Leadership Average ratings for Passport to Leadership fall workshops (Likert scale from 1‐5 with 5 being the highest ranking of excellence): Relevant and worthwhile leadership topic‐ 4.4 Helped me develop my leadership knowledge and skills – 4.0 Presenter was effective – 4.5 Presentation met my expectations – 4.2 Passport to Leadership Participant Reflection Notes: “This was my first passport seminar so I wasn't sure exactly what to expect, but I was surprised that after only an hour I could define my own leadership style so much more clearly.” “I came to the meeting solely to learn leadership and organization skills without many expectations since I've never managed organizations before. Coming out, I've learned even more than I expected, from personal time management to facilitating big meetings and projects.” Greek Life Over 1,000 representatives from the Panhellenic and Interfraternity Council participated in the annual Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Awareness Walk in Balboa Park with participation from various agencies, businesses and other universities. The event was held on Sunday, October 18 and over $950,000.00 was raised in San Diego. The Panhellenic and Interfraternity Councils hosted the quarterly Greek Challenge between chapters where over 50% of each chapter would attend the UC San Diego basketball team every Friday night games. Panhellenic has made plans to expand the Greek Challenge to incorporate other UCSD sports. Greek 101: New Member Programming was held where all new members from the Interfraternity, Multi‐Cultural and Panhellenic Council attended to learn opportunities for leadership on campus, community service opportunities, resources and departments on campus and an opportunity to get to know their fellow Greek brothers and sisters. The Interfraternity and Panhellenic Council hosted the first Risk Management Program open to all UCSD students. Each chapter had over 60% of their members in attendance to the program. The presentations and speakers were: Debbie and Mike Garner “Survival Institute 101”, C.L. Lindsay “Alcohol and Parties”, and Stacy Nadeau from the Dove Campaign “Embracing True Beauty.” Community Law Project Students participating in Community Law Project programs performed 2,196 hours of service during fall quarter, and 599 hours of training and educational programming hours preparing them for law and policy related experiences. Community Law Project Participant Reflection Notes: “I have learned about acknowledging my own privilege and working to insure that others have those same opportunities. Opportunities are a blessing and we are no better than anyone else, even though we may have had a different life experience. Everyone’s journey is different.” “I got into the UCLA Law Fellows program. I’m extremely excited for this amazing opportunity and I hope to make the best of it. I feel that my dream to go to law school is getting closer and becoming clearer with each opportunity I take. I realize, at the end of the day, it is self‐motivation and, most importantly, the help of amazing, inspiring people that build the leaders of tomorrow.” UCSD EXPRESS TO SUCCESS PROGRAMS (ETS) New Initiatives: The Chancellor’s Scholars Program was implemented in collaboration with the Emeriti Mentoring Program, and it is a year‐long communication and leadership development program for recipients of the Chancellor’s Scholarship. Presentation Skills for Graduate Students Seminar, a 9‐week seminar designed in consultation with graduate students to help graduate students prepare for thesis/dissertation defenses, conference presentations, job talks, and other types of presentations relevant to the graduate student experience. ETS Professional Communication Seminar, a 9‐week seminar focused on helping students enhance their knowledge and application of professional communication skills, including networking and interviewing, professional etiquette, resumes and written correspondence, and establishing and fostering professional mentoring relationships INTERGROUP RELATIONS PROGRAM (IRP) New Annual Facilitator Training Course Developed During fall 2009, IRP launched a new Facilitator Training course offered in conjunction with the Communications Department. This 4‐unit course, Theory and Practice of Intergroup Communications, was first piloted during 2007 and will train a pool of undergraduate students to facilitate curricular and co‐curricular Intergroup Dialogues in conjunction with faculty and staff. The fall 2009 course was enrolled to the capacity of 20 students. IRP Launches New Short‐Term Co‐Curricular Programs IRP implemented a series of short‐term co‐curricular dialogue programs to complement its quarter long 4‐unit curricular Intergroup Dialogues. These include: 1) Desserts and Dialogue, a drop‐in program for students to share perspectives on hot topics relevant to the campus community; 2) Dia‐Blog, an on‐line blog which is moderated by trained student dialogue facilitators; and 3) Open Dialogue Forum, which provides opportunities for students to engage with faculty and community experts in a dialogue rather than lecture and Q&A format. Sustained Co‐Curricular Intergroup Dialogues IRP will launch a new co‐curricular gender dialogue course for fraternities and sororities during winter quarter, 2009. These co‐curricular Intergroup Dialogues will be expanded on other topics and for other student organizations in future quarters. Difficult Dialogues Address Campus Climate Issues In an on‐going effort to address campus climate concerns surrounding the Israeli/Palestinian conflict, IRP continues to work with CSI to facilitate on‐going dialogues between Jewish and Muslim student leaders. IRP has also been consulting with Academic Affairs related to offering a for‐credit Intergroup Dialogue on the topic of Israel/Palestine. Lastly, IRP continues to work with staff and student organizations connected to the Center for Ethics and Spirituality related to addressing intergroup relations issues. Campus‐wide Education Programs Highly Successful IRP delivered 19 workshops during summer and fall quarter 2009 for various constituents on campus. 94% of IRP workshop attendees rated their overall experience as excellent or good. 98% would recommend the workshop to other students. Additionally, IRP provided RA training for 5 of the 6 colleges and outreach/education on World Aids Day. Intergroup Dialogue Research Received National Attention IRP has completed the data gathering phase of its four‐year longitudinal study of student learning outcomes related to Intergroup Dialogue. The Multi‐University Intergroup Dialogue Research (MIGR) findings have been featured in a number of recent higher education journal articles including: Evaluating Intergroup Dialogue: Engaging Diversity for Personal and Social Responsibility, Journal of American Colleges & Universities, Vol 12, No 1 and Intergroup Conflict Resolution, Small Group Research, Vol 39, No 1. A book about the project and its findings will be published later this year. Improved Access to IRP Programs and Services IRP completed the expansion of its web site to Triton Link. New program and services brochures were developed and distributed during the fall quarter, 2009. IRP Develops New Hate/Bias Reporting Procedures During fall quarter, 2009 IRP completed a review and rewrite of its policies and procedures related to hate/bias education, incident reporting and processing of complaints. This included a revamp of its hate/bias reporting web site tools, which should go live this winter quarter. New Partnerships Extend IRP Programming IRP is partnered with TRIO Summer Residential Program to provide support for the training and supervision of its student staff and to offer a participant experience using dialogic techniques and social‐justice themes and with the Burke Lectureship on Religion and Society to provide dialogue opportunities for students who attend Burke Lectures. UNIVERSITY CENTERS (UC) Sustainability Resource Center Opened in the November in the former EDNA/Marketing & Programs Offices and initially funded by the Vice Chancellor‐Business Affairs, the SRC will be a destination for students, staff, faculty, and visitors who wish to learn more about UCSD sustainability efforts. Porter’s Pub Porter’s Pub kitchen was renovated and re‐opened in late fall quarter. The new kitchen includes a more efficient layout, new walk‐in cooler, new bar counter, and vented grill. It will allow for a much more extensive menu selection and faster throughout. In a continual effort to soften the feel of the Price Center East, new carpet was installed on the 3rd Level public space over exposed concrete. In addition, new lounge furniture was added to the Tapioca Express seating area and the 2nd level East Ballroom lounge and the Cross Cultural Center lounge. University Centers started the academic year with a fresh focus on the Student Center. The Discover Student Center campaign was launched, including contemporary icons, an earthy color palette, and rich textures that represent the “who, what and why” of Student Center. Guardian ads, lamp post banners, way finding signage, and a monthly calendar of events provided the backbone of the campaign. The Student Center Block Party Received outstanding Guardian recognition and represented a deepening level of confidence and partnership between University Centers and the UCSD student coops, campus departments, and those who frequent the Student Center on a regular basis. New Event Series University Centers introduced two new event series at the Student Center this fall, including a cultural music and food series, The Garden, on the Porter’s Pub patio; and Unwind at the Hump, an energy‐boosting event in partnership with the Wellness Center. Pub After Dark Concerts Concerts experienced an elevation in production levels, with intelligent lighting rigs and high caliber touring artists bringing Pub concerts to some of its highest levels thus far. This increase in production was welcomed and enjoyed by the student tech and marketing teams at University Centers, for it offered greater complexity and involvement opportunities. First Friday – Price Center Open House The second annual First Friday (Price Center open house) saw increased department support, as displayed by their level of participation in game‐stop activities and decorations, and an increase in raffle prize contributions. The student‐friendly design of promotional materials further contributed to an increase in student attendance, and created a fun festival atmosphere for the event. First Friday Concert The inaugural First Friday Concert, featuring Hip Hop artist Keak Da Sneak, was attended by more than 2,000 students. Produced by University Centers in partnership with Associated Students, the concert was a welcome extension of the daytime activities. The First Friday Concert marks a new and exciting tradition for Welcome Week activities at UC San Diego. Triton Homecoming Kick‐off Rally As the campus continues to build a Homecoming tradition, University Centers partnered on the inaugural Triton Homecoming Kick‐off Rally providing more than 500 free BBQ meals, and taking individual and group photographs with the Triton Statue. Marketing and Programs Initiatives The Marketing and Programs team at University Centers designed and produced nearly 200 print and web projects, and 100 videos motion graphics projects during the fall quarter in support of the events, programs and services of University Centers. Improved Price Center Appearance In an effort to create a more consistent look and feel at Price Center, a review of all existing and needed signage was conducted. Phase 1 was completed in fall quarter, including vinyl way finding and logos on all exterior doors and in main hallways of Price Center West, additional signage in Price Center East, and a ceiling mounted One Stop sign. Phase two will include new Today at Price Center signage throughout the facility, and more permanent directional signage in Price Center West. Commuter Student Services Commuter Student Services started the quarter with a fresh new look for outreach materials in the Commuter Lounge of the Price Center. Vibrant colors and large scale graphics were used to create a more active lounge and highlight the services, activities and events provided for commuter students. Commuter Student Services continues to provide information on being a good neighbor and the Community Assisted Party Program (CAPP) program to students living off‐campus. The information is provided online, in person, during workshops, and through leaflets at commuter events. A personalized letter was sent to three student residences during fall quarter in response to complaints received by community members.
