The comfort we feel in our home is like no other. It is the place
that we feel most relaxed and happy. However, as family members
grow up and move in to their own homes, you may find your
house isn’t as busy as it once was and there aren’t as many
people around to give you that extra hand when you need it.
Our companionship service gives you the support that you need
to live independently, providing you with the assistance of a
Healthcare Assistant or Support Worker at times to suit your
convenience. Your Carers will provide company and conversation
as well as providing support with household and social activities.
Our companionship service is most suited to individuals who will
benefit from having the reassurance that someone is there with
them to offer support when it is needed. It also provides peace
of mind for family members who are unable to regularly visit,
as they know their loved one is being cared for.
Our service is tailored to your individual requirements and you
can decide which activities you receive support with and when.
Should you need to alter the level of care that you receive, we
will be happy to arrange this for you.

Mirrors are a vital tool in the armoury of anyone designing
a small room. They can be used to reflect light and create
an illusion of space.
Mirror image
Add the illusion of space
to small rooms
With a huge array of modern and vintage
mirrors available, you can add light, style
and sophistication to your decor.
Mirror tiles arçd space and depth
to a room – they add colour reflection,
emphasis and intrigue.

Particularly suited to bathrooms,
mirrored wall tiles add sparkle and glamour as well as offer a useful reflective surface.
They look great on their own or around mirrors or even mixed in a mosaic with other
type of tiles.
We’ve chosen four styles just on the market from www.my-furniture.co.uk – but use
your imagination and create your own if these don’t suit your particular style.
1. Square Bevelled mirror tiles £24.99/box 6 tiles (0.54m2)
2. Victorian Brick style bevelled mirror tiles £22.99/box 22 tiles (0.33m2)

Is your home
dressed
for success?
PROPERTY SALES EXPERTS
REVEAL THEIR STYLING SECRETS
Home staging is a skilled art. Done poorly,
it can put off prospective purchasers
the moment the front door is opened.
Done well, it can be the deciding factor
that inspires buyers to commit to a
property purchase on the spot.
Balance elegance
with warmth for
perfect appeal
Opt for clean,
neutral shades with
bright splashes
of accent colours
Remember the
simple touches
that make a room
complete
In fact, home staging in the right hands can be award-winningly
good, as demonstrated by design company Alexander James,
who are famed for dressing Britain’s priciest properties.
James Wyatt, Partner at Barton Wyatt, says: “Dressing a property
takes real flair, which is why we work with Alexander James.
The company is able to achieve the perfect balance between
sophisticated elegance and homely warmth that makes such
grand properties so attractive to those viewing them.
“It is a balance that is key when it comes to home staging at
this level – prospective buyers have to be able to imagine
themselves at home the moment they step over the threshold.”
All sizes of residences benefit from ‘staging’ and when it comes
producing a professional looking ‘show home’ there are certain
rules the experts swear by.
Clean, neutral shades, with splashes of brighter accent colours
here and there, are a great way to appeal to the majority of
buyers.
Chris White, founding director of boutique estate agency
Ideal Homes Portugal, says: “It's not just new builds that can
benefit from home staging.
“Those looking to sell their homes can use a few simple tricks,
like swapping hectic patterns for fresh, white linens, to add
instant appeal to any room.
“The key is to think like someone viewing the property for
the first time – what is the eye immediately drawn to?
Is the place clean? Is it tidy?

HOMES
....................................................................................................................................................................................
“In our case, looking at the foreign markets, many
of those buying through Ideal Homes Portugal are
looking for a second home and won't necessarily be
bringing their own furniture, the way one would
when moving into a main residence.
“The company offers furniture packs that provide all
of the essentials, from beds to paintings and mirrors
for the walls.”
Colin and Moira Hutchinson, who bought a two
bedroom apartment with shared pool, in the
eastern Algarve, offered purchasing furniture well
in advance as their top tip to those buying second
homes overseas.
For new build homes overseas, home staging is an
incredibly important marketing tool. The majority
of buyers will inspect a property online before
travelling out to their second home country of
choice to view it, so having a well staged home
to post details of online is the perfect way to reach
out to potential buyers
Marc Pritchard, Sales and Marketing Director of
Spanish homebuilder Taylor Wimpey España,
agrees: “The key to home staging for high end
holiday properties is to provide not just the main
furniture items, but also the right amount of
finishing touches.
“Those looking to sell their homes can
use a few simple tricks, like swapping
hectic patterns for fresh, white linens,
to add instant appeal to any room.
“The key is to think like someone viewing
the property for the first time – what is
the eye immediately drawn to?
Is the place clean? Is it tidy?
“A simple bowl of fruit or bunch of flowers can
make a room feel complete when placed correctly
and can help those looking at images online to
picture themselves relaxing in the property. Décor
must be tasteful and stylish, with a contemporary
edge that exudes comfort and relaxation.”
Over in Italy, home staging takes on a new dimension
for luxury fractional ownership company Appassionata.
Owner Dawn Cavanagh-Hobbs explains,
“With fractional ownership properties, home
staging has to appeal to prospective owners
at the same time as perfectly meeting the needs of
current owners. It's a delicate balance but one that
can lead to a truly fantastic home for all concerned.”
From luxury new builds in the UK to ancient restorations in the rolling hills of central Italy, the value of
home staging cannot be underestimated.

How to create
an oasis of calm
in your bedroom
B
EDROOMS are more than just a place
to sleep. They are a private oasis for you
to shut out the world and relax.
We spend at least one third of lives in our bedrooms and
they should be a secret sanctuary making you feel happy
and calm and in the right state of mind for a blissful
slumber ahead.

So how do you create a beautiful boudoir?
It’s easier than you think and doesn’t need to
break the bank.
With the help of some insider tips, we’ll have
you loving your new bedroom in no time.
It’s all about layers, light and a little bit of luxury.
FENG SHUI
(Pronounced: Fung Shway)
Robyn Bentley is a feng shui consultant and author
of Creating a Haven: Simple Steps For a Healthy and
Nurturing Home. She can be reached through her website
www.fengshuidiva.com
“The bedroom is for Rest, Relaxation and Romance,”
says Robyn. “Anything not having to do with resting, relaxing
or being romantic should not be in your bedroom. Bad feng
shui in the bedroom can put a damper on your love life.”
Dark Bedrooms Are Healthier
Melatonin is a hormone that regulates sleep and mood. It is
produced by the body at night, in the dark. Light makes the
body think it’s daytime. If a light, night light, TV or computer
monitor is on while you sleep, your body won’t produce the
natural amount of melatonin needed, which can create
sleep disorders, depression and/or anger and moodiness.
Exposure to EMFs
EMFs (electromagnetic frequencies) are harsh energies
emitted by electronic devices. Arrange furniture so that your
body is 2 feet away from computer towers, monitors, and
power strips. Keep them an adult arm span away from TVs.
Never use an electric blanket or waterbed heater.
Yin/Yang
Bedrooms should be "yin" or quiet. Things that can create
"yang" energy in a bedroom are aquariums or fountains,
live plants, and light during sleeping hours. Mirrors in the
bedroom keep the room "awake" and can make it harder
to sleep.
Furniture Placement
The bed should have its headboard against a solid wall.
Make sure there is room to walk around each side of the
bed – don't push one side up against the wall. Avoid placing
the bed under a window or directly in line with the door.
Standing in the doorway, if you can toss a ball straight
ahead and hit the bed, energy flowing into the room will
also hit the bed and this is not good.
Colour
Avoid using energizing colours like red and other bold,
bright colours in the bedroom as they can cause tempers to
flare. Bright colours are good for children’s playrooms, but
bedrooms need to be more subdued. Pastels are best.
2
DESIGN
Bed covering
On the bed itself, it’s all about texture and layering. You never
want a bed to appear flat and hard. Invest in the best pillows
or duvet you can afford that is plump and sumptuous. You
want your bedcover to envelope you not just cover you. It
should be light and airy as opposed to flat and heavy to allow
movement of air during the night to help regulate your body
temperature and allow for peaceful sleep. Stop at six pillows
and just a few smaller decorator cushions. Any more looks
vulgar and you have so much to throw on the floor when you
get into bed.
Curtains
The most important layer in a bedroom is curtains. They
make a room seem finished. Think of them as the lipstick of
decorating. If you can, take them all the way up to the ceiling
– it will increase the height of the room.
Flooring
If you can afford it, buy a
rug for your bedroom,
even if you have carpet.
Not only is it nice to put
your feet on in the morning,
but it cements your desired
look and adds a cosy feel
to the room.
Get the light right
Create soft lighting – even
if you don’t have a dimmer
switch, with low voltage bulbs in your bedroom lamps.
Luxury
One fairly inexpensive way inject some luxury into your
bedroom is to wallpaper one wall, or to add a simple
cushion to a chair. Adding several small touches of luxury
is always better than one big statement. It’s also more
calming to the eye.

ESIGN is constantly evolving, what was relevant
last year might not be this. Last year's biggest innovation
might, and probably has been superseded. With this in mind,
we spoke with In-Kreation’s design director Oliver Davies to
get his thoughts on kitchen trends and other aspects of
kitchen design for 2015.
Kitchens Reimagined
What's trending in kitchen design right now?
Design wise, most people are still looking for the big open
plan lifestyle kitchen. Whether the kitchen and living room are
amalgamated or the kitchen and dining room or even all
three, the biggest trend in the overall design is to make the
kitchen the hub of the home. That's not something I see
changing anytime soon and with good reason, why would
you want to be isolated in the kitchen whilst everybody else
gets to socialise together? Big tall unit banks housing all
the major appliances and storage solutions are key along
with island units for prep, cooking or washing often with
incorporated seating are still top of people’s wish lists.
16
SIMPLY SOUTHPORT
What are people looking for in their new kitchen?
Definitely clever storage, nobody wants to get on their hands and
knees just to get something out of a cupboard. Pan drawers are now
called pull-outs because they were never really meant just to house
saucepans, everything from tinned food, crockery and small appliances
can be stored in them. People want everything to be easily accessible,
easy to keep clean and, most importantly, easy to live with.
What's the one area we should really spend money on?
Work-surfaces. They get a lot of use; in fact, they probably get the
most use out of any part of the kitchen. It's definitely worth spending a
little extra to get the most hard wearing materials to ensure they stay
looking as good as the rest of your kitchen in ten years’ time.
SimplySouthport_issue18.qxp_Layout 1 26/06/2015 10:43 Page 17
Where can we save a bit of money?
This is going to sound contradictory but,
work-surfaces. There have been some serious
advances in laminate work-surface technology
over the last few years. I'm not for a moment
suggesting that a budget laminate work-surface
is going to be anywhere near the quality of
granite or composite stone but, high pressure,
metal or ABS edged laminates from the
continent can really give them a run for
their money. If you're wanting to save a
bit of money, have a look at them.
What colours are trending at the moment?
Probably one of the most important bit of advice I can give is to
ignore colour trends. Seriously. It's fine to go for this year’s big
colour when you're buying a new coat; chances are that you'll only
wear it for a few months anyway. When it comes to a new
kitchen however you're making a big investment, one that you'll
still want to be happy with in ten years. Think carefully before you
listen to somebody on the television suggesting you decorate your
home orange...it's going to get very old, very quickly! Go for a
colour that you both like and can see yourself living with for a
long time and if you want to be bold, think about doing so on
the walls since it's not that expensive to re-paint them in a year or
so. As far as the kitchen itself, White, cream, beige and grey still
give big impact for little risk.
What advice would you give to anybody about to
embark on a kitchen project?
Don’t rush. Honestly, give yourself plenty of time. A new kitchen
is a big project, one that you need to get right. Allow time to
get the design exactly how you want, don't wait until two weeks
before you need to have the kitchen fitted before making a
studio visit. Talk to your builders if you're extending or building a
new property, they'll need to know in good time the details of
your kitchen plan and the locations of the services required to
make it work. Remember that the average order time for a
kitchen is 4-6 weeks after which, depending on the specification
and materials involved, it will take 1-3 weeks to complete the
installation. Finally, enjoy it, the journey to your dream kitchen.

Blackberry & bay leaf jelly
“This jelly is sweet and wobbly,
as a jelly should be, but I like to eat it
as a savoury dessert with a thick piece
of crumbly English cheese.”
Makes approximately 1kg
Method:
1. Wash the blackberries and apples. Place all the fruit and bay leaves
into a preserving pan with 600ml/1 pint water.
2. Cook over a low heat gently for about 30 minutes until soft and very mushy.
3. Strain the pulp through a nylon sieve set over a bowl.
4. Measure the resulting liquid and return it to the pan, adding 500g of sugar
for each 500ml of liquor.
1 kg of blackberries
5. Stir over a low heat until the sugar has dissolved, bring the mixture to the
boil and then reduce to a simmer, stirring regularly for 40-60 minutes.
450g (16oz) cooking apples,
cored and finely chopped
6. Check the bubbling mixture is ready by drawing a wooden spoon across
the bottom of the preserving pan leaving a clean line.
4 bay leaves, washed and torn
7. As soon as it is ready, pour the hot jelly into sterilised small jars, cover with
waxed discs and seal. Skim away any scum from the top of the jelly and fill the
jam jars to the brim. Cover, seal and label.
Ingredients:
Preserving jam sugar
8. Store in a cool, dark place until required.
9. Alternatively pour the mixture into a greased mould that can be turned out
for presentation. Best served with a few sliced of Kirkham’s Lancashire cheese
or cold, sliced roast beef.

Strawberries, elderflower granita
Ingredients:
500ml elderflower cordial
500ml water
450g (16oz) or 1 large punnet of strawberries
140g (5oz) thick double cream
Method:
1. Mix the cordial with the water, pour it into a
deep-sided dish and place it in the freezer.
“Granita is at its best when eaten the moment it is
ready. However, it will keep quite happily for several
days in the freezer, if needed, although it will solidify
considerably. In this eventuality, take it out of the
freezer about an hour before you want to eat it,
leave to defrost slightly, then beat again with a fork
and pop it back in the freezer until needed.”
2. After half-an-hour or so, break up any ice that has formed in the tray with the teeth of a
fork – the crystals will form first on the outside, so scrape them into the centre of the tray.
3. Repeat every half-hour or so, until the whole tray is full of rough ice crystals.
4. Angle a small sharp knife and cut, in a circular motion, around the green leafy top of
the strawberry and into the pale flesh directly underneath, discard this part.
Halve any larger strawberries but leave the smaller ones whole.
5. Lightly whip the cream.
6. To serve, fold the strawberries into the cream, spoon into six pretty glasses and top
with a generous spoonful of granita.

Blackberry & gin cured salmon
Ingredients:
900g, 1 sustainable salmon fillet skin on,
scaled and pin boned
250g (9oz) blackberries
375g (13oz) light brown muscovado sugar
250g (9oz) sea salt flakes
Zest of 1 unwaxed lemon
“Maldon sea salt or ground rock salt works particularly well for marinating the
fish, the blackberries add sweetness and turn the trout a vibrant deep purple.
I like to eat this thinly sliced on slightly toasted rye bread with a spoonful of
crème fraîche. This generously serves six people and it’s always best to make
more, as it keeps well wrapped in the fridge for up to a week. It’s very simple
to prepare, the hardest part is waiting thirteen hours for the perfect results.”
2 tbsp gin
Method:
1. Put the blackberries in a bowl and mash them into the salt and sugar.
Zest over the lemon and stir through the mixture.
2. Stretch two large pieces of cling film over a work surface and lay the
salmon fillet onto it, skin side down. Brush your hand along the fillet to
check for any little pin bones, pinching them out with a pair of tweezers.
3. Pour the cure mixture generously over the fillet, wrap in cling film
and leave on a tray in the fridge for thirteen hours.
4. In the morning, rinse off the marinade under cold running water and
pat the fillet dry.
5. Bring the fish to room temperature and slice to serve on
warm butter toast. Wrap any uneaten salmon in cling film
and store in the fridge for
up to a week.

Raspberry and hazelnut loaf
Serves 6 people
Ingredients:
125g (4oz) blanched hazelnuts
50g (2oz) light brown sugar
100g (4oz) caster sugar,
175g (6oz) unsalted butter
2 eggs
A few drops almond extract
150g (5oz) sifted self-raising flour
200g (7oz) raspberries
2 tbsp whole milk
1 heaped tbsp Demerara sugar
“The baked raspberries give moisture to this afternoon loaf,
and the toasted hazelnuts lend greater depth of flavour.
The perfect accompaniment to a cup of fragrant Earl Grey.”
Heat the oven to 160°C and line a 1kg loaf tin.
Method:
1. Tip hazelnuts onto a baking tray and place it in the hot
oven for three minutes. Pour the hot hazelnuts into a clean
tea towel, wrap them up and rub them vigorously on the
work surface to shed their skins. Pick the nuts from their
husks and whizz them in a food processor for a minute
until they are finely ground.
2. Beat together light brown sugar, caster sugar and butter
until it is very light. Slowly beat in eggs and a few drops of
almond extract.
3. Gently fold through sifted self-raising flour, keeping in as
much air as you can.
4. Finally fold in the carefully chosen, unblemished
raspberries and the whole milk
5. Pour the mixture into your prepared tin and bake for
50 minutes until a skewer comes out of the cake’s centre
clean.
6. Scatter over the Demerara sugar within the last five
minutes of baking and cover with tin foil if the loaf looks like
it’s taking on too much colour.
7. Eat a generous slice whilst it is still slightly warm to the
touch.

Duck, blueberries & chicory
“The sweetness of the blueberries
gently tempers the crisp bitterness
of the chicory leaves and makes this
a very moreish light dish.”
Serves 4 people
Ingredients:
120g (4oz) caster sugar
240g warm water
2 tbsp lemon juice
½ tsp salt
150g or 1 punnet of blueberries
2 duck breasts
1 thyme sprig
25g (1 oz) butter
Sea salt & black pepper
4 small chicory bulbs, quartered lengthways
2 tbsp extra virgin olive oil
1 tbsp Moscatel vinegar
Sea salt and black pepper to taste

SIMPLY SOUTHPORT
Preheat the oven to 180°C/ 160°C fan/gas 4.
Method:
1. Dissolve the sugar in the water over a low heat. Once dissolved, turn the heat up
and reduce the mixture for 10 minutes until it has a syrupy consistency.
2. Add the lemon juice and salt followed by the blueberries and cook for a further
3 minutes, or just until the berries begin to burst and the liquor turns purple. This
happens very quickly so keep a close eye on them. The blueberries will keep cooking in
the hot liquor so it is best to take them off the heat early rather than risk over cooking.
3. While the blueberries cool in their liquor, carefully score the skin of the duck breasts
with a sharp knife – going only through the fat – and season well with salt and fresh
black pepper.
4. Heat a non-stick frying pan and place the duck breasts in it, skin-side down. Fry for
6-7 minutes, then turn the breasts over and add the thyme and butter. Allow this to melt,
basting the duck with all the buttery juices, then transfer everything to a small roasting
tin and finish in the oven for 5 minutes for medium rare or 10 minutes for well done.
5. When the duck is ready, baste again with the juices from the pan and allow it to
rest for 5 -10 minutes.
6. In a small bowl whisk together the oil and vinegar then lightly fold through the
chicory leaves along with all the duck resting juices.
7. Thinly slice each duck breast on a chopping board and season with
salt and pepper to taste.
8. Loosely drape the chicory on a plate and fold through the duck pieces,
finally spooning over the blueberries and juice. Enjoy immediately.

Implanting
CONFIDENCE
Photography: TVPAV.com
Ann Knight was so impressed with her husband’s new dental implants
that she turned to the same expert team – and the retired business duo
from Cheshire are delighted with the results!
Douglas Lee
34
SIMPLY SOUTHPORT
Leading the way in UK implant
technology is Lancashire-based
Douglas Lee, who was one of the
first dentists in the country to adopt
the highly successful pioneering
‘Fast and Fixed’ technique.
Highly experienced in this sameday implant procedure, Douglas Lee
Dental Associates, have a team of
professionals, including in-house
dental technicians, to replace teeth
permanently – omitting the need for
dentures.
It was Douglas Lee’s national
reputation for excellence that
originally led Barry and Ann Knight
to the practice two years ago.
Barry was referred to Douglas Lee
by another implant dentist who had
attempted to replace Barry’s top teeth,
which had been damaged by a serious
car accident, with implants.
Barry explains: “The original
implants were loose, they weren’t right
so the dentist said he could not go
any further with it and referred me
to Douglas Lee.
“I travelled over from our home
in Cheshire to see Dougie and he
immediately said he would be able
to help but he was totally honest and
said it would take some time.
‘‘
In the lead up to the
‘Fast and Fixed’ day
Dougie and the team
were fantastic.
It’s not like going
to the dentist, it’s like
visiting a friend.
’’
“They explained everything so
I wasn’t at all nervous about the
procedure. I had got to know them
and it is obvious that they are experts
in their field,” adds Barry, who is now
retired from his manufacturing business.
Implant expert Douglas Lee
explained what would be necessary
and reassured Barry that the problem
could be fixed.
On the day of the procedure
Barry arrived at Douglas Lee Dental
Associates early in the morning.
Sedated, Barry was painlessly fitted

BEFORE
with a completely new set of upper
implants in a procedure that has made
pioneering dentists, Dr Douglas Lee
and Dr Usman Riaz a flagship practice
and a teaching surgery for the German
pioneered ‘Fast and Fixed’ technique.
“To become a teaching surgery for
‘Fast and Fixed’ is a real compliment.
It is a massive boost to us and it gives
us the chance to show other dentists
what can be achieved,” says Dougie.
Testament to their high level of
skills, Douglas Lee Dental Associates
were the first team in the UK to carry
out a full set of upper and lower jaw
implants within a day.
During their years of experience,
the team has refined the procedure
and have state-of-the-art in-house
technology including a Cone beam
CT scanner, a Helbo laser that eradicates
over 99 per cent of harmful bacteria
and an on-site dental lab with a
technician who custom makes the
teeth implants so patients can benefit
from this amazing same-day procedure.
Preparation is key to the success and
the team of dental nurses, cosmetic
dentist Dr Usman Riaz, dental technicians
and Dougie himself, all play their part on
the day. Dr Usman added. 'This is true
bespoke dentistry. One size does not fit
all. A patient's smile is just as unique'.
AFTER
Sedation ensures that no pain is
felt and the patient remains relaxed.
“I didn’t feel a thing,” says Barry.
“It was a long day and I was a bit tired
but it was completely painless. I had
slight bruising afterwards but that
soon disappeared – and the implants
are fantastic!
“They feel like my own teeth, the
sensitivity is still there when you are
biting and chewing. I am thrilled with
them and I can’t thank Dougie and the
team enough.”
Barry’s wife Ann underwent major
dental work around 30 years ago,
however her teeth were beginning to
fail and she was too nervous to consult
her dentist.
“Barry told me I had to go and see
Dougie, so I plucked up the courage
and went. I was adamant that I wanted
a good set of dentures as there was
no way I was going to undergo any
pain with implants,” recalls Ann.
‘‘
I have always looked
after myself and
losing my teeth
was my idea of hell.
It was a terrible shock.
When she went to see the team at
Douglas Lee Dental Associates, Ann
was told, following an x-ray, that the
news was not good. Her gums were in
bad shape and she had several failing
teeth.
“I have always looked after myself
and losing my teeth was my idea of
hell. It was a terrible shock. Dougie
said I wouldn’t like dentures but left
the decision totally to me.
“He explained the procedure and
reassured me it would be pain free so I
eventually made the decision and said
‘yes’.”
In Ann’s case, she was so delighted
with the results in her upper jaw that
shortly before Christmas, she had her
lower set of implants done under the
same ‘Fast and Fixed’ procedure.
“When I looked in the mirror and
smiled it was unbelievable!” recalls an
emotional Ann. “I have always covered
my mouth when I smiled because of
my teeth, but now I smile all the time
as it has given me so much confidence.
“They don’t look fake, or overly
white, they just look totally natural
and I am thrilled! I am 110 per cent
happy with them – and I told Dougie
and the team that I don’t take this for
granted, I am very grateful to them all.”

TIPS FOR PRODUCING
PROFESSIONAL-LOOKING
HANGING BASKETS
by www.potterandrest.co.uk
NOW IS THE TIME TO START PLANNING AND PLANTING
YOUR SUMMER HANGING BASKETS
– THEY’RE A GREAT WAY FOR BRINGING COLOUR
AND FOLIAGE TO YOUR OUTDOOR SPACE.
Follow our handy tips for producing professional-looking
baskets at home:
1. First up, plan what colours and plants you’d like to use in your baskets.
You’ll need to choose your plants depending on where your basket will
be placed, whether it’s in shade, partial shade or full sun. Shade and
partial shade loving plants include fuchsias, begonias, pansies and lobelia.
Those which favour full sun include geraniums, petunias and gazanias.
One of the trendiest colour schemes out there at the moment are
baskets featuring all white flowering plants. Try Geranium ivy leaf
‘Great Balls of Fire’ White, Geranium ‘Cato’ or white-flowered Begonias.
3. If you have a wire basket, line it with a pre-cut liner made from coir
or a felt material, or moss. If it is a wicker basket with a plastic lining
then you need to pierce holes in the plastic to help with drainage.
4. Fill your basket two-thirds of the way up with your multi-purpose
compost. Mix in water-retaining granules and the slow release fertiliser
using your hands.
5. Select a centre-piece plant and pop it in the middle of your basket.
You can use this to arrange your other plants around.
6. Place filler plants around the centre-piece, working from the inside to
the outside. Position trailing plants such as fuchsias around the edges of
your basket as they produce a cascade effect and add some interest.
Peter’s favourite
summer sprays
this year . . .
l Echinacea ‘Harvest Moon’ lives up to its
name with marvellous, enormous scented
flowers that can be up to 10cm in diameter.
l Lavandula angustifolia ‘Hidcote’ has
fragrant spikes of very dark violet, almost
navy blue, flowers from July to September
and silvery-grey/green aromatic foliage,
which smells wonderful when you brush
passed it.
8. Let your baskets blossom in a greenhouse, polytunnel or conservatory.
If you can, hang them up, as this will help them develop.
l Nemesia ‘Aromatica Rose’ has perfumed
flowers that can fill a patio with a heady
scent while their dainty blooms are very
pleasing to the eye too.
9. Once the last frosts have passed, usually around May time, you can
help acclimatise your plants to being outdoors by placing them outside
in the daytime and bringing them inside at night every day for a week.
l Rose ‘Grace’™ (Auskeppy) is a repeatflowering rose with beautiful blooms
with a strong perfume.
10. Now your baskets are ready to be popped outside full-time so place
them on display in otherwise plain areas of your garden to help brighten
them up or even hang them in a door way for a more enticing entrance.
l Sweet pea ‘Matucana’ has smaller
flowers than modern varieties but this is
made up for by the enthralling fragrance.
7. Water well.
t
2. Collect all the tools you’ll need for creating your basket, including
the most important part, the basket as well as a liner, a peat-free multipurpose compost, water retaining granules and a slow release fertiliser.

What are you planning for
your patio
this summer?
Seasonal summer flowering or bedding plants add
colour to our gardens. They are most often used in
pots on our patios and decking.
The best bedding or patio plants flower profusely
and continuously from June through to the first
frosts of the winter.
Their foliage isn’t always as important as their
flowers but their leaf colouring and shaping still
needs to be attractive. If the plant is the main
feature on your paved area then its foliage has to
be impressive too.
The way bedding plants grow is also an important
consideration when selecting them. Some need to
be upright to create central interest in pots, tubs
and hanging baskets.
Others need to trail in great swathes over the
edges of the containers they are planted in.
Every year the growers bring out new varieties for
us to ‘ooohhh’ and ‘ahhh’ over.
Recent breeding and development has created
a diverse range of new flower and leaf colour
options and also a raft of more compact plants
that are better able to withstand tricky growing
conditions.
Old-fashioned bedding plants don’t exist any
more. These days you are more likely to find
these beauties in the trendiest pots around:
l Nemesia – go for the scented Lady Series
has a powerful scent and looks great too.
l Impatiens – since Busy Lizzies were hit by
downy mildew these mildew-tolerant
New Guinea varieties have come to the fore.
l Petunias – these have raced ahead in
development terms with new colour
combos including black-flowered and
lime-flowered ones. There are also some
neat, small, bushy varieties on the market
too. A firm favourite of ours in the colour
stakes is the ‘Blue Vein’.
l Lobelias – developments have led to larger
flowers and better heat and drought
resistant varieties. The newer strains also
don’t require their dead flowers to be
removed to encourage more either.
l Bidens – the forms that used to overwhelm
hanging baskets are gone and have been
replaced by more well-behaved and
compact ones
l Bacopa – also called Sutera. Perfect for
hanging baskets all on their own or used
as filler plants in mixed baskets and tubs.

 Have some front!
Prune back those lovely climbers to ensure an
abundance of flowers to greet viewers. Unkempt,
unruly growth will put potential purchasers off in
an instant. The Fiskars Telescopic Tree pruner is the
perfect tool for those hard to reach branches.
Cost: £118.99.

The path to selling
your property
starts in the garden
It is easy for outdoor spaces to look a little bedraggled
but you should never underestimate the importance of
the outside of your house when it comes to selling.
The front of your property makes the first impression
and the garden often the last. No matter how perfect
the interior, the outside space can make or break a sale.
Fortunately, just an afternoon of effort can be enough
to transform the outside, effort more than repaid
when you have happy viewers.
Here are some tips
from Fiskars, who
have a huge range
of high performance
tools to help you
tackle the tasks in
just four easy steps.

www.fiskars.co.uk
 The path to purchase
The path to purchase should be looking pretty sharp.
One task that makes any garden look perfectly
manicured is tidying the edge of the lawn. A crisp
sharp edge not only looks good but helps make beds
and lawns look manicured. The Fiskars Servo-System™
Grass Shears are perfect for small areas and quick
fixes. The flexible cutting head – adjustable by up
to 360° – allows the shears to easily reach awkward
angles. Cost: £24.99 – £39.99
 Weed out weak selling points
Weeds are an advert for the untended garden and
not the good impression you want to give would be
owners. The Fiskars Weed Puller is a great invention
for removing stubborn weeds such as dandelions in
an instant, so it's an easy quick fix. A simple steppull-eject and the weed is extracted from the lawn
by the root, job done. Cost: £39.99.
Make sure the grass is greener
When purchasers look at your garden, you need them
to imagine sunbathing in it. That's pretty hard to do if
the lawn looks like a farmer's field. Make yours look
loved with a sharp and quick cut with the Fiskars
StaySharp™ Reel Mower. If your lawn has been left
untended over the winter, the revolutionary interdrive
technology delivers twice the cutting power to chop
through the small twigs, weeds, or dense grass.
Cost: £199.99 / Grass Catcher at £39.99.
Rake in the rewards of a tidy garden
Paths, lawns and beds scattered with leaves, cuttings
or just ‘stuff', never present as picture perfect so they
need to be removed quickly. The Fiskars Leaf Rake XL
is the best one for the task. With an impressively wide
span, the plastic head has just the right rigidity to
retain a firm grip on any amount of grass, leaves or
debris. An extra long wooden shaft enables super
swift clearing of larger areas. Cost: £19.99.

...................................................................................................................................................................................
tantastic!
By NIKKI MUMBY Professional Beauty Therapist
............................................
Let’s face it ladies – (and gents who do) – we’re all one spray away from turning our golden glow
into an oompa loompa shade of tango.
That extra spray might seem like a good idea – especially when the summer wardrobe is beckoning
– but less is definitely more when it comes to a natural looking tan.
As a holistic and beauty therapist, who also trains industry professionals through my A-Listers Academy,
it makes me cringe to see a bad tan job.
Done well however, a professional spray makes you look and feel healthier and eases the transition
from winter wardrobe cover-up to a show-it-off summer ensemble.
If you are determined to do your own faux tan – or even if you are visiting a salon
– then please follow my essential tips for a professional looking result.
1. Before you apply your tanning spray, cream, or
mousse; make sure any unwanted hair on the skin
has been removed. Whether its shaving or waxing
this should be done 8-12 hours beforehand.
2. Exfoliate the skin removing any dead skin cells and
flaky dry patches; preparing the skin helps the tan
go on evenly.
3. Make sure you wash off all deodorant on as
antiperspirant or anything containing ingredients
which could react with dihydroxyacetone (DHA) –
the natural chemical found in sunless tanning
solutions. It can turn the skin a khaki green colour
whilst it’s developing in the armpit region (not a
great look!)
4. Cleanse your face – remove any jewellery.
5. Apply a thin layer of scent free moisturiser to any
areas that may be dry like elbows, knees, wrists,
ankles and feet. Vaseline or barrier cream can be
used on the nails, the top of the wrist and the sides
of the feet.
6. When applying, wear skin tight disposable gloves
(orange hands are a dead giveaway).
Most chemists sell them.
7. If you are applying a cream/gel/mousse or lotion
apply to the body first by rubbing it in circles and
then stroke over the area to make sure the whole
area is covered and even. If there are any slight
streaks then stroke over the area to even them out
or buff them off with a dry mitt or flannel.
8. After doing the body, face is next so moisturise the
skin first and only use a small amount, avoiding the
eyebrows and eyelids and blending it into the
hairline and neck.
10. If you are tanning your own hands do these last as
your gloves need to come off. Apply a small blob on
the back of one hand with some moisturiser and
put the back of your right hand on top of the back
of your left hand and massage it in that way,
bending your fingers and using the sides of the
top of your hands to go gently in between the
fingers to allow even distribution.
11. If you are the larger side in terms of chest and
tummy after application you can gently pat in a
very small amount of talc via a mitt under the
breasts, any sticky areas, armpits or strap areas in
case you need to wear anything tight fitting within
an hour of your tanning. This prevents the tan from
smudging and this method can be used behind the
knees or in any creases where you may sweat.
12. Make sure you read the manufacturer’s instructions
for tanning development time. This is usually
between 5 – 8 hours. Within this time wear loose
fitted clothes (no socks) for the first hour if possible
and remember to use hand gel or wipes if you need
to wash your hands.
13. When your tan has fully developed, shower or bathe
as normal and moisturise your skin every day to
keep it supple and prevent dry patches that may
develop making tan uneven.
14. Do not remove any hair via shaving/waxing or
exfoliate your skin until your tan is fading otherwise
this will cause unevenness.
15. If you’ve followed my steps you should be looking
tan-tastic now – it’s the safest form of getting your
glow on!
9. When applying to tan to the back of your hands
and top of your feet, mix some body moisturiser in
with your tan as these areas go darker.

Lift your mane
with hair-raising
extensions
Whether your hair is long or short, curly or straight, sleek or unruly,
if it is flat then it’s time to turn up the volume.
There are a ton of mousses and sprays on the market,
but nothing quite lifts your hair like, well, more hair!
One company has created the Ready-to-Wear Hair
Dress Collection – which is an off-the-peg extension
range made from artificial human hair.
Balmain say their Memory®Hair range is created to
resist any environmental influences and ‘remembers’
the last applied styling technique.
There are six different styles and they retail for
around £56.
But how easy are they to apply – and how do you
achieve the look at home? We challenged them to
apply a hair dress to a model within 1 minute –
and here are the results.

Prendé – liquid paraffin wax
treatment relieves painful
joints, hands and feet
Paraffin wax has a very high heat
capacity, meaning it is able to
absorb and retain a great amount
of heat. A paraffin wax treatment
takes advantage of paraffin's heatretaining capacity in a simple
process called heat transfer. In
technical terms, heat is transferred
to the core of the affected area as
paraffin goes through a phase
change. As it melts, the paraffin
becomes a liquid and is able to
retain more heat. When a hand,
foot or joint is covered with wax,
using warm gentle brush strokes,
the phase of the paraffin that
surrounds the covered area quickly
changes into a solid. The heat
that is given off is called the heat
of fusion.
More simply, the heat that goes
into melting the paraffin comes
out when it solidifies into a
comforting paraffin coating,
thus transferring the heat into the
affected limb. Another way to look
at it is the paraffin is the medium
that transfers heat from the wax
to the painful area.
At the same time, the heat from
the paraffin opens pores and
increases circulation in the skin.
This is why paraffin is so beneficial
to skin, leaving skin softened and
more radiant.

In pure numbers fish lead the way – there are over
23 million swimming around in tanks across the
country.
But really it is cats and dogs that we lavish our
money and time on. According to the Pets at Home
study there are nine million cats and nine million dogs
living as pets in the UK.

Holidays
Brits spend an average of £450m each year taking their pets on
holiday. A third of owners now holiday with their pet and are happy
to pay for the privilege too, spending an additional £126 on average
to keep their pet by their side when they travel.

Health and Hygiene
The amount the British spend on pet hygiene has also climbed steadily
in recent years, growing from £289m in 2006 to £334m in 2012. It is
predicted to grow to £380m by 2017, according to Pets At Home.
Grooming
The market for pet pampering is booming. We spent nearly £2.5bn
on grooming, insuring and taking our pets to the vets last year.
Pet services are expected to grow in the coming years, according to
a survey from Pets At Home, with insurance estimated to climb by
nearly 10% and grooming by 4.1%.
Fat cats
The industry for pet food and accessories made up nearly half of our
total spend on our pets, at approximately £3bn.
Doing the business
More than 90% of employers who allowed dogs in the workplace
noticed a positive change in the working environment. One in two
found that there was a decrease in absenteeism; 67% said it improved
morale and more than half thought work relations improved.

Secret Island
Wonders
waiting to be discovered

N
EXT time you travel to the big-name isles
of Corfu, Skiathos or Santorini – plan on
exploring their smaller neighbours.
These are the hidden islands that yachters
and sailors like to think of their own secret
spots; the dozens of little Greek island-gem
alternatives to discover.
If you take a moment to look at Greece on
the map; notice the many cluster of islands.
They are grouped in island regions known
as Argosaronic, Ionian, Cyclades, Sporades,
Dodecanese, and Northern Aegean. They
often feature a larger “hub” island so to
speak with tiny isles… right next door.
Likely once part of the larger ones in proximity,
these tiny island gems provide a gentler,
quieter experience; perfect for hopping on
over for a day trip or longer.
We consulted Discover Greece for their best
hideaway islands . . .

1. Agistri
If you’re in Athens for a couple of days and want an easy
Greek-island getaway think about the green island of Agistri
(literally meaning fishing hook in Greek).
The smallest of the group of islands known as the Argosaronic
include Aigina, Poros, Hydra, Spetses. Agistri is close to Athens
and even closer to the island of Aegina (2 hours by ferry). In
recent years, Agistri has become a popular weekend destination
for many Athenians seeking to chill out island-style. Its thick forest
of pine trees, pebbly beaches and blue-green crystal clear waters
are sure to impress as will the selection of cool places to eat and
drink in town. The islet of Aponisos (about 5km away) has a little
taven overlooking the dock that yachters and sailors consider their
own little secret.
2. Wild Alonissos
The most remote of the Northern Sporades (that includes
Skiathos, Skopelos, Skyros), Alonissos (1 hour -2.5 hours by
ferry/catamaran from Skiathos and just 30 minutes from
Skopelos) is home to Greece’s first national Marine Park –
a refuge for rare seabirds, dolphins and the Mediterranean
monk seal, monachus.

3. Paxi and Antipaxi
If there are two destinations that spell romance in Greece, they are Corfu and the
two little islands of Paxi and Antipaxi. Think about designing a trip that
includes trips to both and escape to another time, place and state of mind.
Corfu and Paxi inspire and arouse the senses. Lose yourself in the impressive
Venetian architecture of the Old Town on Corfu. Feel its grandeur.
4. Chios and Oinousses
Set your travel compass to the islands of the North Aegean and explore Chios and
Oinousses, the islands of shipping and trading tycoons. In Chios: Take a drive along its
winding roads in August and stop to witness the gooey dew drops dripping from
the indigenous-to-the-island mastic tree. Explore the Medieval villages and dance
’til dawn at the panegyria held during the holiday of the Assumption of the Virgin
Mary, known as Panagias. Explore beaches with deep green waters via water taxis
which will take you to neighbouring Oinousses (ie. Inousses), actually nine islands,
many of which are uninhabited.
Naxos © Municipality of Naxos and Small Cyclades
5. Naxos and the isles of the Small Cyclades
Naxos, the largest of the Cyclades island region,
is surrounded by four tiny islands known as the Small
Cyclades, which are part of the Municipality of Naxos.
These are, in the order in which the ferry line stops at
each: Iraklia, Schinoussa, Koufonissia and Donoussa.
Some closer to Naxos than others, they all offer
something a little different. Iraklia offers peace and
tranquility with a bohemian twist. Schinoussa, with
its rugged dirt roads and close to 20 beaches, offers
a culinary surprise with a delightful selection of
restaurants. Koufonissia’s white sandy beaches and
turquoise beaches are unparalleled in the Cyclades,
while Donoussa’s remoteness offers breathtaking
views of the big blue and is perfect for those seeking
a private, peaceful refuge.
6. Pristine Anafi
There’s no doubt about it, Santorini is one the world’s
top travel destinations. Two hours east of Santorini by
boat is Anafi, with its charming amphitheatrically-built
Chora at a height of 260 metres. Admire the island’s
characteristic Cycladic architecture. Step onto sandy
beaches, swim in heavenly waters and explore remote
caves and rocky inlets.
7. Nisyros
Part of the group of islands known as the Dodecanese,
Kos and Nisyros are about one hour apart by boat.
Combine your visit to Kos with a trip to Nisyros and
witness a world of contrasts. Visit the volcano and
descend into its three craters (Stephanos, Alexandros
and Polyvotis) for an experience unlike anything else,
Less adventurous, but fun nonetheless, is a visit to the
Volcanic Museum. Venture into authentic Greek island
life on Nisyros, where the beaches are splendid and
the thermal spas a plus!

Athens
the ultimate
P
CityBreak
LAY the term city break in a game of word association, and it’s
likely the answers dished up will comprise the usual suspects.
The swoony streets of Paris, perhaps, or the buzz of Barcelona.
But what about Athens?
Yes, I know many still associate the Greek capital with political
unrest and an economy in meltdown.
But if you want the perfect tick-box break that will embrace
stunning architecture, an abundance of history, the ebb and
flow of a busy city, as well as glorious, unspoilt beaches then
point your compass this way.
For Athens, as we discovered, serves up an opportunity to have
a break that can satisfy everyone's taste – including youngsters.
Not only because the city, once the ancient cradle of art, culture,
politics and sport, remains relentlessly fascinating. But because
you can enjoy the city whilst staying just a 20 minute drive away
in the beauty and tranquility of what has become known as the
Athenian Riviera.
Hugely overlooked by the British market, this glorious stretch of the
Saronic Gulf offers unspoilt sandy beaches, waterfront eateries and
at certain points along the strip, lots of shopping opportunities.

Yet, the remarkable thing is that few in this
country seem to be aware of it.
With our two youngest in tow – Aaron, 16
and Sophie, 10, we opted to stay in the
Vougliamani area of the Riviera, which is
lighter on shops but heavy on charm. What’s
more the Greeks, it seems, remain enduringly
cheery (and grateful) to tourists,
Our hotel, the gated, five star Astir Palace,
sprawls across 75 acres of sun-drenched
gardens on a private peninsular, while the
spacious rooms offer catch-your-breath
views over sparkling blue waters. It may be
super-lush, but the staff are smiley and the
children indulged.

S
To call Athens a city break is perhaps to
cheat it of its huge scope and potential.
You can do as much or as little as you
want and by staying in the Riviera you
can leave the rattle and thump of the
city and return to peace and tranquillity
of the stunning coastline.”
ITTING on a peninsular, you can see the sea from every point
of the compass. So there are endless beaches to choose from.
The Astir has its own private stretch as well as offering
discount at the nearby Astir beach, a private strip of sand
with excellent facilities as well as being home to the ruins of the Temple
of Apollo. Who knew sunbathing could be so cultural?
And though we hadn't come to shop, a ten minute drive took us to
Glyfada, a fashion conscious suburb where smart restaurants and
boutiques fan down towards the sea.
There was no hurry to throw ourselves into the bustle of the city centre.
Anyway, our daughter was having too much fun frolicking in the water
or jumping around the hotel’s play area.
The Athenian Riviera is too paradiscial to leave in a rush. Instead we
headed to Vougliameni Lake – a natural wonder filled by hot springs
which keep the water's temperature at a stable 21°C or more. Indeed
its high mineral content makes it a magnet for those who want
to heal their aches and pains. Though our youngsters simply enjoyed
the back-to-nature freedom of swimming in this unusual place.
Since the Riviera is a 20 minute drive from Athens town centre, you
can get around by public transport. But we decided to hire a car –
and anyway the traffic wasn’t anywhere near as bad as its formidable
reputation suggested.
And so to Athens itself, which fascinates whatever your perspective.
The obvious places for any visitor to the centre include the Acropolis
and many ancient sites that speckle the city such as the Agora –
the city`s ancient commercial centre – as well as the Temple of Zeus,
and Panathenaic Stadium, reconstructed from the remains of an
ancient Greek stadium.
The city plays court to its ancient past. So a trip to the metro station
at Syntagama Square – yes that Syntagma Square, once home to those
riots and now a bustlingly busy, colourful thoroughfare crowned on one
side by the Greek Parliament – is a place to catch a display of wonderful
antiquities unearthed during its construction.
Outside the Parliament building you can catch a colourful piece
of pageantry, through the changing of the guards, who perform
complex footwork in pleated kilts and pom-pom decorated shoes.
Very postmodern.
And once we’d feasted on ancient culture, we took a stroll through
the Plaka, the city's network of charming, pedestrianised streets (even if
they do bristle with souvenir shops).
Meanwhile, it seems that everywhere you turn, there's
somewhere different to eat – from traditional tavernas to
edgy gourmet restaurants which combine Greek cuisine
with a modern twist. Back on the Riviera, there are also
some lovely traditional restaurants.
To call Athens a city break is perhaps to cheat it of its huge
scope and potential. You can do as much or as little as you
want and by staying in the Riviera you can leave the rattle
and thump of the city and return to peace and tranquillity
of the stunning coastline.
No wonder the gods of the ancients bypassed
a city break anywhere else.

FIVE MINUTE
MASTER
CLASS . . .
HOLIDAY
PHOTOGRAPHY
Britain may have gone ‘selfie’ crazy over the past few
years, but there’s nothing better than a well-executed
shot to record your holiday memories forever.
So how do you up your photography game and
frame those special moments?
Simply Magazine consulted lifestyle and wedding
photographer KAREN CLARK to share her expert
skills in a five minute master class . .
1
Try a different perspective –
get down low
Don’t just stand and take your photo try crouching
down or look for something to stand on!
By getting down to your subject’s level your photos will
feel as though you are more involved them and it can
also give a sense of scale to buildings and monuments
etc. Lie on the floor or if you don’t want to get dirty
hold your camera as near to the floor as possible.
In general look for alternative angles to take your photo
instead of how you would normally view the subject.
68

2
Let them be themselves
Some people hate having their photo taken and look away
or put a hand over their face at the mere sight of a camera.
Others love it and pose and pout! Either way – neither make
a nice portrait. Try to blend into the background and use a
zoom or be quick and sneaky before they have time to
realise the camera is on them and they recoil or strike one!

3
Capture people in action
A moving subject can add drama to your
photo especially when you’re being chased
by a big wave! You can find movement at
sporting events or just with the children
playing with water. At night using a slow
shutter speed you can get very dramatic
effect using light.
4
5
Look for natural frames
Using a natural frame is great for filling space and giving
your photo depth. It also helps lead the viewer’s eye to
the subject. Natural frames can be natural or man-made.
Look for doorways, windows, trees and other shapes in
nature. If there isn’t an immediately obvious one then do
as I do and pick a leaf or use some LED lights and make
your own.
Leading lines
Leading lines as the name suggests are
lines within an image that lead the viewer
from one part of the photo to another.
Leading lines can be bridges, roads, fences
and walls or naturally occurring one like
rivers and trees. Once you start looking for
them you’ll find they are everywhere.

Look for details
With details I don’t just mean scrutinise your
subject to get a magnified section of it, but
also look for things that are around you that
will add to your photo. My son James was
sulking when the photo above was taken,
probably because he’d been told he couldn’t
do something but then I noticed the rather apt
graffiti on the wall and made him sulk even
more by placing him in front of it!
On the more obvious note of looking for
details, close-ups or macros as they are
known can produce some dramatic images.
Keep your eyes open because there are shapes
and patterns everywhere
70
SIMPLY SOUTHPORT
7
Stay off Centre
There’s no need to always have your subject slap bang
in the middle of the frame. It can make your photo seem
unbalanced and uninspiring. By placing it to one side
will usually give it more clout. Just make sure that your
subject is walking, looking, driving etc into the picture.
Google the ‘Rule of Thirds’. Understanding this will
improve your composition no end.
SimplySouthport_issue18.qxp_Layout 1 26/06/2015 10:44 Page 71

8
Make sure your horizon is straight
Something that really niggles me is when I see a good landscape but the photographer
hasn’t noticed that the horizon isn’t straight. I’m not talking about when the photo has
purposely been taken at an angle, I mean when the flow of the sea downhill is just not
steep enough to be intentional. OK so this example is slightly exaggerated but you get
my drift. You don’t need to shell out for Photoshop to do this as you’ll find that a lot
of the free editing software allows you to straighten things. Picasa is one that I use
regularly and allows you to do other funky stuff like making collages.
10
Have Fun
To me photography isn’t a job
or a hobby it’s a passion and
you find that you’ll produce
your best images when you’re
enjoying it! So grab your
camera whether it is a phone,
a compact or a big boy DSLR
(Digital Single Lens Reflex) and
get out there and enjoy it.
9
Be Creative
Use props. Either take them with you or use things
you have with you whether it is balloons, party poppers or fishing nets.

of the 1886 Southport lifeboat disaster,
which claimed the lives of almost all the

The impoverished fishermen of Southport,
Lytham and St Anne’s bravely attempted to

came into distress off the Southport sands.
The songs and script are by Southport-based

Motoring
by Roger Blaxall
........................................
There are difficult jobs and there are difficult jobs; how about
being a translator from Swedish to Chinese and vice versa?
Roger Blaxall recently drove Volvo's latest XC60 sports crossover
and examines the future of the Swedish firm
now it’s in wealthy new Chinese hands...
Volvo XC60
Sports Crossover
Quote: “What makes Volvo different? Scandinavian culture, Sweden’s high standard
of living, her cold climate, social and environmental awareness? These and other
factors have helped to shape a company that’s respected throughout the word,
not least in Britain where Volvo sales are expected to top 24,000 this year.”
That was then, this is now – and the last few years has seen Volvo reach thousands
more customers thanks to some capable new models – some more capable than
others following the demise of the C30 range – including the aforementioned XC60.
Fears that the unique DNA of one of Sweden's
most treasured motoring brands would be lost in
translation after its takeover by the Chinese were
very real – but have not been realised.
If anything Volvo is now stronger, leaner and fitter
after the deal – which at £billions was by no means
a Chinese take away – with the company taken
over lock. stock and barrel by the Sino giant Geely
in a move which astonished the motoring industry.
Now that the dust's settled, it looks like a ‘win
win’ for the Swedes and its customers with
Volvo’s unique DNA preserved and evolving for
future models all developed with an eye to the
lucrative Chinese premium market, not just for
Europe and the US.
Expect some exciting developments over the next
few years with the first fruits Volvo's impressive
new XC90 taking a bow in the UK this summer. Its
biggest SUV was something of a dinosaur having
been introduced back in 2002 and driven recently
was its smaller but no less capable brother, the
XC60; to understand its rationale we have to go
back to the seventies and a yellowing ‘Motor’ supplement which I found lurking in my automotive
literature collection called ‘The Volvo Way’.
I drove the £43,220 SE Lux with Geartronic (not a new Swedish techno band by the
way) in Crystal White with the tasty RDesign pack. It entered a talented marketplace
a few years back, taking the fight to various rivals from home and abroad. And that
unique Swedish DNA saw a well conceived, well designed and well made machine
make its debut, with its recognisable Volvo ‘look’ and unique Swedish feel telling the
faithful all was well with the newcomer.
If there’s one word which springs to mind when
mentioning Volvo it's safety and given the fact that
many of these cars are chosen as family transport
the company’s typical belt and braces approach
to the subject is very evident with a plethora of
electronic kit to ensure every angle’s covered on
and off road – although 'off road' will most likely
mean the local gymkhana rather than any Bear
Grylls style adventurous driving out yonder.
I discovered the car’s forte was accomplished
motorway cruising and it proved equally well
endowed for speedy A and B road driving,
too. And it’s no wonder the XC60 is a
familiar sight in west Lancashire with
typical drivers more mature and happy
to invest their cash in a good looking
model that’s retained its traditional
Volvo strengths of safety, security, and
design integrity which won’t be out of
fashion after one motoring season.
