Linköping’s long term ownership and
management of municipal waste

• The City's goal: CO2 neutral by year 2025!
• Currently converting 600 000 tons/year of
waste into power and heat
• Biogas: 14 million Nm3 - 140 GWh
• Heat: 1 630 GWh
• Electricity: 676 GWh

Between 1995 and 2001 Tekniska verken introduced
a weight-based system for curb-side collection

Property owners pay a fee based on weight
•
The system benefits households that are recycling
•
Has resulted in less collection of undesirable waste
and a higher degree of recycling

In 2012 Tekniska verken introduced the
”green bag” for collection of food waste

Waste is collected in one bin with bags in two fractions:

green bags with food waste
common plastic bags for residual waste
•
Standard collection vehicles powered by biogas
•
A central optical sorting system
•
Has resulted in drier waste for incineration and a ”new”
fraction for the biogas production
So far 80% of the households have adopted the “green bag” and the food
waste fraction is collected with a high level of purity - average 94 %.
