“Last year’s job fair attracted over 750 job seekers and 62 area employers, so we are
anticipating another successful event,” said Kelly Haer, Business Manager for OMJ.
Haer and Monica Rose Gwin, OMJ Public Relations Specialist, have been working closely
with Massillon Mayor Kathy Catazaro-Perry and her staff to coordinate the event.
“We are pleased to once again partner with all of these organizations, and welcome WHBC
Radio as a new sponsor this year,” said Gwin.

The employer registration fee is $75. Deadline for employers to sign up is April 30th.
A feature being offered this year for job seekers to prepare for the job fair is the job fair
preparation workshop. “Stand Out From the Crowd” is being presented at the Massillon

Public Library on Tuesday, April 28 at 5:00 p.m. The workshop will show job seekers what

Becoming College ABLE
K
ent State University Stark Campus and Canton City Schools ABLE are partnering to offer free not-forcredit developmental classes in reading, writing, and math to prepare students for success in college. The
program, called CABLE (College + ABLE), is offered at the Stark branch of Kent State, delivered by Canton City
Schools ABLE instructors, with curriculum aligned to Kent State coursework.
Students who score significantly below the college ready level on Kent placement tests are strongly
encouraged to take these classes. Others elect to take the courses maybe because they have been out of
school for years and feel anxious about college level math or writing. Because the classes are free, students
save on tuition and reserve financial aid which has lifetime limits. No grades are given so students don’t
have to worry about affecting their grade point average.
The program is open to anyone with a high school diploma or GED whether they plan to attend Kent State
or another university. Interested students can register at the Academic Success Center located on the lower
level of the Campus Center on the Kent State Stark campus. Call (330) 438–2554 for more information.

OBRN Expansion Project Awarded Extension
A
s a result of the successful implementation of the Ohio Business Resource Network (BRN) model in our
5 LWIA consortium covering 16 Ohio counties, as well as ALL project goals being exceeded in 2 ½ years,
the OBRN has been approved and awarded a no-cost extension by the United States Department of Labor to
continue programming from July 1, 2015 - June 30, 2016.
Programming will continue with dedicated staff and will coincide with the comprehensive program
evaluation in Year 4. Our program staff, area WIB directors, as well as our area network partners should be
applauded and recognized for their hard work and efforts towards this innovative business services delivery
model. Without their shared mission and vision and collaborative efforts, this
extension would not have been possible. The BRN leadership team continues
to pursue a variety of sustainability resources to continue programming after

Stark County JFS Offering Subsidized Employment Program
S
tark County Job and Family Services (SCJFS) is proud to continue its offering of the Subsidized
Employment Program (SEP) to employers and Stark County residents. Employers could be eligible for up
to a 6 month subsidy of $600 per month for hiring a part-time employee (20-29 hours per week) and $1,000
per month for hiring a full-time employee (30+ hours per week). This is an excellent opportunity for job
seekers and employers alike.
In FFY 2014, SCJFS signed 77 contracts with local employers. So far in FFY 2015, 56 contracts have been
signed.

The program is designed to assist the employer in defraying the cost
of hiring and providing training to a new employee.

The position must be permanent full-time or part-time employment.

The participant must be a TANF eligible custodial parent or a non-custodial
parent with a current child support order.

The participant shall be paid the same rate as other employees doing similar
work.

The participant shall be entitled to the same employment benefits as other employees of the organization.
EMPLOYER GUIDELINES

The employer will receive a monthly subsidy of $1000.00 for hiring full-time.
Full-time employments for purposes of this program are 30 hours or more per
week.

The employer will receive a monthly subsidy of $600.00 for hiring part-time.
Part-time employment for purposes of this program shall be a minimum of 20
hours per week and less than 30 hours per week.

The participant must work a minimum of 2 weeks per month for an employer to
receive a subsidy for that month.

The program is limited to 6 months per participant.

The program will continue as long as funds are available.
