Points to Ponder from Patty
Welcome to our new members, Debbie Owens, Brenda Carroll,
Linda Drummond and Julia McKinley.
I am so excited to see the group grow and yet stay so
cohesive. Enjoy the meetings and fellowship with one
another.
Thanks for submitting your surveys and congratulations to
Anne for winning the iron! The board is reviewing those
submitted and incorporating your wishes into our next
year's programs. If you were unable to submit your survey,
just drop one of the board members a quick note and let us
know what you want to see take place within our group.

I for one cannot believe this year is going so quickly Christmas is right around the corner. We need to start
thinking about our annual Christmas Party. If you are
interested in serving on the committee for this wonderful
event, let me know. We will begin discussing this event in
September.

THIS AND THAT - IMPORTANT STUFF TO KNOW
♥ The retreat scheduled for October at Loucon has been cancelled due to lack of participation. Refunds will
be made at the September meeting. Plans are underway to reschedule for next year.
♥ Brenda Edwards is collecting empty spools again this year for the quilt show. Please save your spools as
you empty them. You can periodically bring them to her during the meeting or save until the August
meeting.
♥ You can go online to view the Stitchers Newsletter at :
www.hardinext.org/quilting-newsletter.asp
♥ Your board members are working hard to make the most of your meetings and schedule great workshops
throughout the coming years. If you have any ideas for workshops or would be willing to teach a workshop
please contact Betty Percifield, or if you have ideas for upcoming meetings contact Diana Zimmerman.
Diana is looking for make-it/take-it and demo ideas or anything else you would like to see or are willing to
share with everyone during the meetings.
♥ We are asking for donations of aprons for the quilt show. We would like them to be newly made and we
will use them every year during the quilt show in the Food Court area. This year we will do a conga line once
each day and have attendees vote on their favorite.
♥ Put your SAVE THE DATE insert on your refrigerator or bulletin board to remind you of guild activities like
workshops and UFO days. We don’t want anyone to miss out on these.
MAKE AN APRON DAY
11 Sept , 9am—4pm
Come in and make an apron to donate to
the quilt show food court and make
another for yourself. Some quick and
easy apron patterns will be available for
your use.
Bring about 2—2-1/2 yards of fabric
and 1/2 yard interfacing which is
optional per apron.
Bring your machine and basic sewing
supplies and bring your own lunch.
Sometime during the quilt show we will
do a conga line and have attendees vote
on their favorite apron.

Becky delivered a wonderful presentation during the August meeting. Becky
works at the Kentucky Derby Museum as a tour guide and at Churchill
Downs at the betting windows. She made this quilt from the horse's identifying blankets and groomsmen's vests and told us the background on a KY
Derby winner associated with each particular number. Becky also made another quilt similar to this one that she donated for an auction to raise money
for the Backside Learning Center at Churchill Downs Racetrack.

Minutes of Stitchers Quilt Guild – August 25, 2010
Meeting began on time with 41 members present along with seven guests including Lydia Myers,
Jessie Hood, Brenda Carroll, Linda Drummond, Martha Claycomb, and Debbie Owens. A quorum
was present to conduct the Guild’s business. The minutes of the July meeting were accepted as
read. VP Betty Percifield presented two possible opportunities for classes and programs to be discussed further at the September meeting. Quilt Show Committee Chairpersons gave committee reports. Old Business: It was decided that our previously completed patriotic quilt blocks will be
used for lap quilts for patients at the VA Hospital in Louisville. New Business: Hardin Memorial
Hospital has asked that we make caps for cancer patients. A border demonstration was provided
on making Pyramids and Curling Ribbon borders. A hands-on workshop was held for all in attendance to make their own mini landscape quilts. Meeting adjourned at 9:00 pm.
Mini Landscape Show and Tell (October Meeting)
Work on your miniature landscapes (Autumn in Kentucky) and plan to bring them to the October meeting. We will have a little display set up for these and some lucky lady will win a gift!!
Don't bring them to the Sep meeting - keep working on them and have them finished for Oct.
QUILTING TIP
Pressing: Pressing seams ensures accurate piecing. SET THE SEAM FIRST by
pressing it as it was sewn, without opening up the fabric pieces. This helps to
sink the stitches into the fabric, leaving you with a less bulky seam allowance.
Make sure you are Pressing, not Ironing. Ironing means to move the iron while
it is in contact with fabric; this stretches and distorts. Pressing is
lifting the iron off the surface of the fabric and putting it back
down in another location.

CANCER CAP WORKSHOP
Saturday, Oct 30th, 9am-6pm
Project Room
Please stop by during the above hours and make a Chapeau for a beautiful lady who is
undergoing cancer treatment. Pattern will be available at the workshop. Here are the
supplies required:
1/2 yard of fleece (makes 2 caps)
Sewing machine with thread to match fleece Basic Sewing materials
Lunch is on your own! Come support a wonderful community project.
LAP QUILTS FOR VETERANS
Feb 26th
We have reserved Extension Office for Sat, Feb 26th to assemble and finish lap quilts that will be donated
to the local VA hospital. The quilts cannot exceed 45" X 45". We have some patriotic blocks that can be
used but please feel free to do your own thing. They do not have to be patriotic. Remember we do have
female veterans as well. Mark this date on your calendar so that you are prepared to participate in this
community project. Many of us have or have had family members serving in the Armed Forces and would be
proud to have our Veteran provided with a beautiful lap quilt.
Here are a couple of ideas if you want to make one/some/many at home prior to the workshop.
Using 4, 12 inch finished blocks, sash with 3 inch finished strips and border with 3 inch
finished strips and border again with 6 inch finished strips. That would total 45 inches
Using 9, 12 inch finished blocks, sew them together in 3 rows of 3 without sashing and
add a 4.5 inch finished border. That would total 45 inches.
Of course you can come up with your own ideas also.
We hope to see lots of participation on this project.
Frances Heinen is getting instruction from Patty Pruitt during the Gordian Knot workshop and
during show and tell at the August meeting we got to see the results of the quilts done by
Jessie, Carolyn, Eileen, Janice, Kitty, Whitney and Frances.
