Dancsok’s musical career continues to soar
There is no mistaking
it, Rachel T. Dancsok is a
country belle, faith filled
and mission driven. Simply put, she was born to
sing.
Dancsok has recently
submitted her name for
eligibility
for
the
Saskatchewan Country
Music
Association
(SCMA) awards. Her
names has gone into a ballot, which was voted on by
the members. From there
a second ballot is done
which comes out soon. A
winner will be chosen
from the finalists of the
second ballot during the
25th Annual Awards
weekend April 11-13,
2014, in Nipawin, Sask.
hosted by the Northeast
Country Music Association. She has also applied
for the gospel showcase
and the adult showcase.
The SCMA is a nonprofit organization, dedicated to the promotion,
development, and enhancement of all aspects
of Saskatchewan country
music at the local, national, and international
level.
Originally from Gypsumville, Man., Dancsok
began singing at an early
age and even taught herself to play guitar. As she
grew up she performed
around the countryside
with old time bands, stage
performances, working as
a ‘duo’ and ‘solo’, developing her skills and experience into a way of life.
Rachel is no stranger to
talent shows, television,
nominations for awards
from MACA (Manitoba
Association of Country
Artist) from Winnipeg,
Trappers Festivals in The
Pas, Man., headliner for
main stage concerts,
Dauphin Country Fest
secondary stage. Her love
of music and the talent to
express it, captures audiences. She would share
her aspiring musical ambitions with life’s responsibilities, but through all
of these life phases, music
has remained a constant
love, with a pulling power
that almost takes upon

This year the Sow’s
Belly Soup Group is performing “HERE COME
THE BRIDES”, a three
act comical play which is
staged in Jimmy Took’s
living room.
Jimmy Took’s only living relative is Uncle Dan.
Uncle Dan is very
wealthy, very generous
and very mistaken when
he assumes that Jimmy is
married.
Just
when
Jimmy finds himself in a
position where he needs to
borrow money, Jimmy
finds out that Uncle Dan
will be arriving soon to
meet the bride. Afraid
that Uncle Dan will think
he deliberately lied to
him, Jimmy frantically
tries to find somebody,
anybody to be his wife!
After several refusals
from other candidates,
Jimmy’s roommate, Bill,
against his better judgement, gets dressed up as a
girl! The previously unwilling participants arrive, and Jimmy ends up
with not one, but three
brides!
The group meets from
two to three times a week
in preparation for the
show. Our actresses, actors and crew behind the
scenes are a very dedicated bunch of people who
give so much of their time
to make each year’s production a success!
New to the acting group
this year is Reid Hedstrom and April Chaban.
The Cast of Characters
for this year’s performance are: Jimmy Took –
Scott Sefton, Bill Thompson – Kyle Ehman; Mr.
Oswald – Megan Duchek;
Madge Burns – Melissa
Duchek; Uncle Dan Took –
Brent Drozda; Aunt Ellen
– Elyce Wilson; Peg Westfield – Breanne Persson;
Mrs. Duvalle-Smythe –
April Chaban; Bubbles
Duvalle – Courtney Radbourne; McDaniel – Reid
Hedstrom; and
Lady
Macbeth – Jason Nichols.
Behind the scenes for
2014, are the crew who
are also instrumental in
helping to make each
year’s show come together: Michelle Banga,
Blair Banga, Angie Herperger, Brent Drozda,
Kelly
Junek,
Carrie
Junek, Kyla Cook, Jared
Cook, Carol Closson,
Sheila
Banga,
Terri
Duchek, Jamie Sondergaard, Kyle Ehman, Scott
Sefton, Megan Duchek
and Thatch Polson.
Treat yourself and your
friends to a night out and
see what unfolds as
Jimmy searches for a
bride!
The shows dates for
2014 are set for March 28
and 29 and April 4 and 5.
Presale date for tickets
is Saturday, Feb. 22, 2014,
from 1-3 p.m. at the Stockholm Communiplex. Corporate Tables are also
available!
Tickets are $30 each
and are also available
after Feb.22 by contacting
Michelle Banga at (306)

Saulteaux Elder and storyteller at P.J. Gillen School
by Brenda Matchett
Students at P.J. Gillen
School had the privilege of
meeting Margaret Rose
Cote, a Saulteaux Elder
and storyteller last week
during a special assembly
on Feb. 11. She is a published author who has
published two books on
Nanabush legends and is
currently working on a
third.
Cote was born on Aug. 2,
1950, and was the first
person in Saskatchewan
to teach a First Nations
language in a public
school. She enjoyed a diverse work experience before her employment with
the Indian Language Program
of
the
Saskatchewan
Indian
Cultural College (1979),
where she assisted in developing the Saulteaux
language
curriculum
guides.
After teaching at Bran-
Margaret Cote, Saulteux Elder and storyteller
don University and at the
Kamsack
Junior
High
School, Cote joined the
First Nations University
of Canada in Regina, she
retired from this position
in 2010, and now teaches
for Regina Treaty Status
Indian Services at the
Gathering Place.
Her publications include Nahkawewin –
Saulteaux, Ojibway Dialect of the Plains(1984),
Nahka-wewin Workbook,
a Saulteaux Syllabics
Book, sixteen children’s
books (entitled Saulteaux
Talking Books ), and a
songbook
(AnihsinapeApinoci Nakamowinan:
Children’s
Saulteaux

and
Nursery
Rhymes). She has translated stories for Pebble
Beach Interactive Fiction
Inc. (Saskatchewan Education), and aided by her
parents has recorded lessons from “Nahkawewin”
in Saulteaux and written

the magnitude of a calling.
Dancsok captures the
ability to be manager,
stage hand and driver, to
deliver a performance of
integrity, music to sooth
the soul, with lots of fun
and energy.
Dancsok has witnessed
a subtle evolution in her
singing over the years. Although raised on Gospel
music, in her early career
she was singing both as a
solo and duo performer
primarily in the country
genre. Her first CD, was a
country album entitled
“Follow Your Dreams”,
with original songs from
renowned song writers
from Winnipeg. However,
as time went on, her personal growth within her
Christian faith brought
her to the conclusion that
some songs were no
longer quite as appealing.
Rachel then surrenders
her music to God, the
giver of her gift. Her shift
was made to Gospel
music, and this brought
about her second CD
“Jesus Loves Me” released
in 2008, which features
songwriters from Branson, Mo, Texas and
Saskatchewan.
In 2013 Dancsok released two new CDs:
“Born to Sing” a collection
of country songs with a
new twist, an expression
of emotion between lovers,
others and the Lord. Certainly a legacy.
“Gospel Favorites” expressing her roots, musically engineered.
Dancsok currently is in
the process of writing
some songs of her own.
Some of the accolades
and awards that Dancsok
has received over the
years include: Country
Gospel Music Association
(CGMA) from Branson,
Mo., Canadian Silver
Heart award for 2011
Acappela Artist of the
Year, 2010 Female Vocalist and Acappela of the
Year, 2007 Female New
Artist of the Year; Rising
Star Award; Songs reaching #15, #26, #38, #50 on
the Top 100 charts in USA
and Europe with Hope
Street Music Group; Cohosted the 100th Anniversary of the CGMA Awards
Show in Branson, Mo.;
performed on stage at the
“Jammin’ for Jesus” in
Branson and various
singing appearances on
TV shows.
Rachel will continue to
sing for both the encouragement of people and the
sharing of her faith.
Dancsok will be performing at the Minitonas
Community
Hall
on
March 14 at 7 p.m. Tickets
are $10 at the door, children are free. Dancsok

EDITORIAL
Murray
Mandryk
reports
from the
Saskatchewan
Legislature
Political issues not what
they seem to be
The problem in politics
is issues are never quite
as they seem . . . or better
put, never really about
what politicians say they
are about.
Or so Saskatchewan
Premier
Brad
Wall
demonstrated on a couple
issues of late.
The first is the on-going
problem moving prairie
grains,
oilseeds
and
pulses to port by rail. Wall
dashed off an angry missive earlier this month to
the federal Transport
Minister Lisa Raitt, demanding she intervene in
a potential grain handling
dispute.
In fairness to the
Saskatchewan Premier,
one gets his frustration
with
grain-handling
unions at the ports because it’s one we all have
seen in our lives.
But the very fact that
CN Rail and Teamsters
reached a deal the very
day that Wall sent his letter suggests that some of
Wall’s outrage was a little
misplaced.
After all, the lack of cars
designated for grain
movement in this year of
a record crop on the
Prairies has been a frustration since the crop
came off.
It makes one a little
suspicious that Wall just
found it politically easier
to rail against unpopular
grain-handling
unions
that do something about
the rail companies themselves.
In fact, after his letter,
Wall announced that Agriculture Minister Lyle
Stewart, Economy Minister Bill Boyd, Highways
and Infrastructure Minister Don McMorris would
meet with the rail companies in the hopes of dealing with the backlog in
grain movement that the
Premier now acknowledges had precious little
to do with labour trouble
in the railroad industry.
“This grain movement
backlog is a very serious
situation for the entire
province and it is a high
priority for our government,” Wall said. “The delays in moving grain have
led to lower prices for our
producers at the farmgate
and are harming our reputation as a reliable supplier.”
This is all true, but
shouldn’t this problem
have been recognized
and/or addressed sooner?
Or was it simply more
convenient and a better
story to blame the unions?
There again, the stories
politicians tell aren’t always the whole story, are
they? Consider Wall’s bid
to sell Casinos Regina and
Moose
to
the
Saskatchewan
Indian
Gaming
Authority
(SIGA).
To hear Wall tell it, the
sale – estimated to be between $100 and $200 million – would mean more
jobs, better educated First
Nations people and a better return on investment
among the touted benefits. And, evidently, the
only thing standing in his
way is NDP leader Cam
Broten and the NDP’s
unanimous approval.
The thing, is though,
Wall doesn’t need the approval of the nine-member NDP caucus to change
a law in the 58-seat Legislative Assembly. Wall’s
real problem is that it’s a
law (and an election
promise) he promised he
wouldn’t change without
first consulting the voters.
And as for Wall’s rush to
get this great business
deal completed before
SIGA changes its mind, is
it really that great a deal
for taxpayers when the
casinos provide $50 million a year or so to the
provincial coffers? Gee,
what happened to the
Sask. Party’s “No special
deals” for First Nations?
The suspicious among
us might think that Wall
is trying to deal with his
own budget cash crunch
problem . . . while also attempting to trap the NDP
with its own silly legislative forbidding the sale of
such Crown corporations.
If so, Broten is then doing
what Opposition leaders
should do – holding the
government to account.
There
again,
why
should Broten stand in
the way of the aspirations
of First Nations people,
considering the NDP campaigned on resource-sharing with First Nations?
Isn’t this a resource that
could be shared? And why
were the casinos put on
the NDP government’s list
of untouchable Crown corporations in the first
place?
Or, like so much in politics, is this just another
issue that’s really being
about something else?

Report from Ottawa
a message from Garry Breitkreuz, MP

– Pauline Chewka
Mayor, Town of Esterhazy
One-for-One Rule will
continue cutting red tape for
many businesses
The government knows that nothing irritates a business owner as much as
the time it takes to comply with what seems an ever-lengthening list of federal
regulations, which include payroll, labour and trade.
That’s why we’ve just introduced legislation to enshrine the One-for-One Rule,
which has been in effect since April 1, 2012. We realized that one of the most important things we can do to help Canadian businesses thrive, particularly in this
time of global economic uncertainty, is to make the regulatory process as smooth
and pain-free as possible.
Under the One-for-One Rule, regulators must remove a regulation each time
they introduce a new regulation that imposes administrative burden on business. The regulation removed must be equal in its burden to the one implemented. This has given regulators a chance to reduce the number of regulations
currently on the books, while still guarding the health and safety of Canadians.
Introducing time-saving new measures like single windows and electronic submissions will help Canadian businesses thrive. It will also save money. In the
2012–13 fiscal year, the One-for-One Rule reduced administrative burden on
business by about $3 million. That represents 98,000 hours saved for business
annually, with a net of six regulations being eliminated from the government’s
books.
The trend continued throughout 2013. By Dec. 12, under the One-for-One Rule,
we had reduced administrative burden by almost $20 million and achieved a net
reduction of 19 regulations.
We’ve also created service standards for 24 high-volume regulatory authorizations, covering more than 60,000 transactions with businesses each year.
With these reforms, our regulatory system has become more predictable, with
32 forward regulatory plans, containing more than 400 regulatory changes, now
posted on the Web.
Enshrining the One-for-One Rule in law is part of the commitment we made
to Canadians when we launched the Red Tape Reduction Action Plan in October
2012. That plan, currently the most ambitious red tape-cutting initiative in the
world, can increase Canadian competitiveness and free business to innovate,
grow, and create jobs. It underscores Canada’s reputation as one of the best
places in the world to do business and invest.
Minister Tony Clement, President of the Treasury Board, has given the direction we’re taking in this area a thumbs up. He has noted that: “Canada is the
first country in the world to give the One-for-One Rule the added muscle of legislation. The Rule has already saved Canadian businesses thousands of hours in
time that businesses spend on dealing with regulatory red tape.”
Fewer irritants for business owners mean better business all around – and
that’s a good thing for all Canadians.
As your Mayor I try to share positive news about our growth and our
proactive move into the future, however this month I need to share my
intense disappointment.
After numerous complaints about
the speed of travel down Sumner
Street, Fourth Avenue, in the School
zones and illegal crossing of the solid
line on Main Street, coupled with the
RCMP’s impossibility to be everywhere at once; tough decisions had to
be made by Council.
Two years ago speed bumps were
placed near the children's play park
and blocks down the center of Main
Street to mixed reviews. No one dislikes doing this more than Council
but for the protection of our citizens
and repeated requests, it became necessary. Although we shouldn’t need
physical barricades to follow the law,
some apparently do, therefore Council has no alternative but to try to
force traffic to slow down. Within a
week of the barricades being placed
they were removed by vandals and/or
driven over by large trucks in an illegal manner, requiring public works
personnel to go and redo a job that
had already been done. As a matter
of interest, I dislike those speed
bumps too, that said they still served
their purpose because the traffic was
slowed or rerouted to ensure the
safety of our children.
Numerous complaints about the
speed of vehicles entering Town from
both the South and North on Sumner
Street, have been coming to the Town
office for years. In the last couple of
years, the intensity of these complaints has increased likely due to
the increased number of children living in our Town and developments
reaching the outer borders of Esterhazy. Council was successful getting
the speed decreased further out of
Town so that the vehicles would be
driving slower by the time they
reached the Town limits, but to no
avail. Some residents have resorted
to putting signs on their own lawns
begging traffic to slow down in order
for their children to be safe.
Recently, four-way stop signs were
placed on the north and south end of
Sumner Street and adjoining streets,
as an answer to complaints and lack
of understanding for the safety risks
of speeding. They were also placed in
the school zone at the request of the
RCMP.
Since these signs have been put in
place, they have been vandalized repeatedly. These signs cost the taxpayers upward of $200 a piece to
replace, not to mention the time for
our public works department to either clean or replace them. Defacing
public property is a criminal offence
and carries a penalty of a fine, probation or jail time. This blatant disregard for the safety of our citizens
and disrespect for the law is very disappointing. It is upsetting that we
have to put all these barriers in place
in the first place, now we have to
waste time and taxpayers money trying to keep them clean and safe?
Public Snow Removal: When clearing the snow from your
driveway, sidewalk, etc. please ensure it remains on your
property and not on your neighbours. Please be especially
careful to ensure that snow is not piled on or near water
hydrants, making it hard to access them in case of an
emergency.
Permission is required from the Town Office to dump snow on
any Town property, alley, lane or street.

SPORTS TALK - by Bruce Penton
Delaet’s pro golf stock on the rise
It’s easy to spot Weyburn’s Graham DeLaet on
a PGA Tour golf course.
Besides being the only
Tour player with a bushy
Duck Dynasty-like beard,
DeLaet can be found simply by looking for the sea
of
Saskatchewan
Roughriders and ‘Canada’
clothing among his gallery
supporters.
In West Coast tour
stops such as San Diego
and Phoenix, DeLaet’s
fans had plenty to cheer
about. The fifth-year Tour
player had back-to-back
runner-up finishes, earning him in the neighbourhood of $900,000 and
solidifying his status as
not only Canada’s best
professional golfer but one
of the world’s best.
His world ranking is
now in the mid-20s and by
the end of this season, few
will be surprised if the 32year-old Canuck is in the
top 10.
“Let’s see,” mused Ryan
Lavner of golfchannel.com
after the golfer’s runnerup finish at Phoenix.
“Graham DeLaet’s last
four starts read as follows
– T7-T6-T2-T2 – and he
ranks inside the top 10 in
every important statistical category. If he doesn’t
win by June, it’ll be a massive upset.”
After a sensational finish to the 2013 season,
when he had back-to-back
top-five finishes in the
first two Fed-Ex Cup playoff tourneys, and then a
‘Hello World’-type showing in the President’s Cup,
DeLaet’s career is definitely on the upswing. His
Official World Golf Ranking status means he is eligible to compete in the
four majors this season, as
well as the World Golf
Championship
events,
high-money tournaments
that open the door to even
more world-ranking point
opportunities.
“I have been playing
well for the last few
months,” DeLaet told the
Associated Press. “I really
feel like I worked super
hard in the off-season. It’s
nice to see it paying off.”
DeLaet will drive down

Stamp unveiled
commemorating
Sandra Schmirler
Canada Post unveiled a stamp honouring curling
legend and Reginan Sandra Schmirler in anticipation for the Sochi Winter Olympics.
Schmirler skipped one of the most successful curling teams in Canadian history.
The Biggar, Sask. native won three Canadian and
three world championships between 1993 and 1997.
Schmirler and her team became Canada’s first-ever
Olympic gold medalists in curling in 1998.
Schmirler is a member of the Canadian Sports
Hall of Fame and the World Curling Federation Hall
of Fame. She died of cancer in 2000 at the age of 36.
Schmirler is survived by her husband Shannon
England and daughters Sarah, 16, and Jenna, 15. All
three agreed that the stamp was great way to commemorate Schmirler’s life and lauded career.
“It’s kind of unreal really that she’s that big of a
deal,” Sarah said. “A lot of people my age and even
younger know about her.”
According to her, what really struck her about the
stamp was her mother’s intense look.
“It’s kind of how I look when I slide,” said Sarah,
who’s also an avid curler.
Schmirler was honoured with stamp along with
winter sports pioneers freestyle skier Sarah Burke
and figure skater Barbara Ann Scott.

Dates were set at the
general meeting for the
various events: Equine
Extravaganza held at
Stockholm Communiplex
will be April 26 from 10
a.m. – 4 p.m. Lots of vendors selling their wares
and
various
equine
demonstrations through
out the day. Eastside Heritage Horse Show – July 5
at Lee’s Rodeo Ground. A
full day of classes for the
many competitors that attend from all over Manitoba and Saskatchewan.
Bullorama held at Lee’s
Rodeo Grounds will be
tentatively Aug. 23 and
the Rodeo also held at
Lee’s Rodeo Ground will
be tentatively on Aug. 24.
We once again look forward to a large entry from
all over Saskatchewan
and Manitoba.
There was also discussion on hosting a clinic of
some form of equine discipline for members and
open to the public. This
was tabled for future discussion
It was mentioned that
one of our members
Dustin Agecoutay, who is
a first responder has purchased his own medical
supplies and was also
looking at purchasing a
spine board as well. The
14024MM00
club voted to donate $500
towards the purchase of
his medical supplies. In
the past Mosaic has generously donated the use of
their supplies for Dustin
to use at all of our functions.
Ride nites/events were
discussed and it was decided to try something different this year. All of our
members have so much
going on in their lives at
different times of the year,
that it is impossible for
them to attend some of
the events. So each member will be designated a
month in which to organize an event that all club
members as well as the
public can attend. It could
be gymkhana practice,
trail ride, wagon ride,
sleigh ride, public information nite, as long as the
event pertains to the
equine industry or discipline. The first event will
be in February and Ellen
Thompson Frick will be
organizing that event
The club reviewed the
revisions to the Sask Riding Club rule book that
are being voted on at the
Sask Riding Club annual
meeting in Saskatoon, Feb
16, and gave their yea or
nay vote for our director
to vote with at the meeting.
There was some discussion regarding the Equine
Extravaganza, our first
large event of the year
and the various offerings
during the day. Lori Muric
volunteered to head up
the Art Contest for our
local youth artist. She will
be sending info out to the
schools soon. There will be
many vendors at the function selling their wares as
well as many demonstrations throughout the day,
including farriers, massage therapy, heavy horse
grooming and braiding,
wagon rides, Tack swap
and Sell. Anyone interested in being part of this
function please contact
Linette Lanski or Laurie
Cooper.
Also discussed the 3rd
Annual East Side Heritage horse show that the
horse show committee of
Roxanne
McNabb,
Lynette Griffith, Ellen
Thompson Frick, Lori
Muric, Linette Lanski and
Laurie Cooper work very
hard to offer to the many
competitors that attend.
This year the horse show
will be July 5 at Lee’s
Rodeo Grounds with a full
slate of classes for the riders. The group has started
planning already and are
out and about for sponsorship.
The Ovarian Cancer
Memorial Barrel Race
group advised the club
that they will be hosting
the memorial barrel race
June 14-15 this year at
Lee’s Rodeo Grounds.
We look forward to another very busy year in
the community. If anyone
is interested in becoming
part of our group and
bringing some new ideas
to the mix, contact any
member or attend one of
the general meetings held
the first Tuesday of every
month at 7:30 in the Esterhazy Town Office.

changed when Gage Fouillard put the focus and emphasis of reaching for her
rodeo goals on the back of
a little cutting horse
named Annie.
“I never thought Annie
would be the barrel and
pole horse she is now,”
said Fouillard, who began
riding as a six-year-old on
the back of a Shetland
pony named Mikey. “To
where I am today as a
high school rodeo athlete,
I owe everything to
Annie.”
Involved in her first full
year, the Grade 12 student competes in barrels,
poles, breakaway roping
and the sport of cutting.
Cutting you may ask?
Yes, cutting, an equestrian event in the western
riding style where a horse
and rider are judged on
their ability to separate a
single animal away from a
cattle herd and keep it
away for a short period of
time. While not many
Manitoba students participate in the event, its
Fouillard s favorite and
one she has been involved
in over four years, all
thanks to Greg Frick and
Ellen Thompson from
Sabre Quarter Horse
Ranch in Stockholme, SK.
The Saskatchewan horse
ranch was the locale
where Fouillard starting
riding competitively at
the age of 12.
“I love the rush it gives
me when my horse is
working really nice on
that perfect cow,” said the
17-year-old. “I am also a
person who loves a challenge, and what is more
challenging than depending on two animals with
their own mind to read
each other without guidance of your reins.”
Putting a spin on the
event, the Birtle Collegiate Institute student
had this to say.
“In cutting competition,
you and your horse have
to work together as a
team and show your cattle-handling skills. You
only have two and onehalf minutes to complete
the task at hand. You are
judged partly by the activity of the calf, so the animal is selected by choice,
not random. After you
have chosen a specific calf
to the horse, neither the
rider or horse can change
calves without a penalty.
“The challenge really
Page 8
Aboard her horse Annie, Gage Fouillard is at home in the world of cutting, an event where rider
and horse work as a competitive team
begins once the cut has
been completed.
“Once the calf is
stopped near the center of
the arena, you have to
drop your hand on the
horse’s neck and allow the
horse freedom to show its
cutting skill and cow
sense. The horse should
match the calf’s move-formove to prevent it from
getting back to the herd. A
loose rein is one of the
keys to a highly marked
run. The time limit allows
two to three animals to be
cut, and the time spent
with each animal is left to
the competitor s judgment. Performance is
evaluated on the basis of
several key points, with a
score of 70 being average.
Involvement a key
In the short amount of
time of being involved
with the MHSRA, Fouillard has had many highlights including being
named the Girls Cutting
Year End and Finals
Champion in 2012/2013.
The daughter of Racquel and Constant Fouillard of St. Lazare is also
happy how things have
worked out with her horse
Annie in terms of success
seen over the fall rodeo
stops. Results are posted
at www.mhsra.ca.
Along with rodeo, she
also competes in the Manitoba Cutting Horse Association as well as some
shows under the auspices
of the Saskatchewan Cutting Horse Association.
She says that two very
special registered quarter
horses
six-year-old
Sabres Playin High aka
Annie, and nine-year-old
Hot Shot Lucy aka Lucy are her travelling buddies
and her dream team.
“I’m blessed to be in-
volved in the MHSRA and
serving as a student event
director alongside my
cousin Gabrielle,” shared
Fouillard.
“I’m
also
blessed to have a mentor
like my mom, friends like
Greg Frick and Ellen
Thompson who have mentored me through all my
crazy ideas of what I
wanted to do, from the
show arena to the cutting
pen and now the rodeo
arena, and supporters like
my cousin, aunt Delores,
and Linette and Nicole
Lanski.”
Road less travelled
Facing facts that this is
her graduating year, the
road to compete in high
school rodeo may have
been less travelled than
other students across
Manitoba, it is not to say
Fouillard hasn’t had a
blast at every rodeo she
has gone to and will go to
this spring.
And
this
teenager
knows with rodeo comes
responsibility. Not only
from a competitive aspect,
but also making sure
equipment and tack is fit
to go, let alone a horse or
two. The roads covered are
always a learning experience and completely
worth it no matter the distance.
It’s something she
wished she would’ve
taken part in a long time
ago, as in her words it s an
association full of great
people and in turn a great
past time uplifting the
western lifestyle.

Obituaries
Leslie Fredrick
Nelson Taylor
June 25, 1933 January 25, 2014
Cecilia Cook
November 17, 1915 February 3, 2014
With great sadness we
announce the loss of our
Dad and Grandpa Leslie
(Bill) Fredrick Nelson
Taylor who passed away
peacefully on Jan. 25 at
Yorkton General Hospital.
Les was born on June
25, 1933, on the family
farm near Welwyn Sask.
to Fred and Hazel Taylor.
Dad grew up on the
farm with his sisters
Leafa, Frieda and Patricia. He had many stories
of his life on the farm with
his sisters and friends.
Dad married Velma
Barkley from McAuley
Man. on Feb 21, 1958.
Mom and Dad lived in
Moosomin for four years
where Dad worked for the
local Co-op driving fuel
truck and then after for
Neyedly’s Trucking and
A&H Trucking. Brenda
and Debbie where born in
Moosomin. Mom and Dad
moved to Esterhazy in
1962 and Kathy was born
in 1963. He worked for
IMC for over 10 years
until he moved to PCS
mine where he retired in
1996 after 22 years with
PCS.
After Mom passed away
in 2009, Dad continued to
live in Esterhazy until he
moved to Yorkton in 2010.
Dad loved his life and
always had a smile on his
face and was never without a joke to tell. He loved
his family and was devoted to them. He loved
his music and it was a big
part of his life. Whether it
was playing in a band and
singing or his thousands
of records and tapes he always had music surrounding him. Camping, fishing,
playing cards and trips to
visit family or friends was
something he enjoyed.
He was a diehard Rider
fan and one of his last outings was going to the
Grey Cup party at Kathy
and Mike’s quonset. He
was so happy that day to
be with his family and
friends and see his Riders
win the Grey Cup.
He is survived by his
sister Frieda (Norman)
Lewis of Killarney, Man.;
brother-in-law
Charlie
Clark of Brandon Man.
and Bill Sauter of Moose
Jaw; sister-in-law Eileen
(Albert) Frazer of Innisfail Alta.; brother-in-law
Murry (Barb) Barkley of
Moosomin Sask.; and
many
nieces
and
nephews; his daughters:
Brenda (Garry) Her-
perger, Debbie (Marcel)
DeCorby
and
Kathy
(Mike) Sikora. And his
beautiful granddaughters:
Samantha and Morgan
Sikora and Danielle and
Alanna DeCorby.
A celebration of his life
was held on Feb. 8. Donations of remembrance can
be made in Les Taylors
name to the Esterhazy
Hospital Building Fund.
Cecilia Cook of St. Paul
Lutheran Home, Melville
and formerly of Broadview entered her eternal
rest, peacefully on Feb. 3,
2014, at the age of 98
years.
Cecilia was born Nov.
17, 1915, in St Gregor,
Sask., daughter to Martin
and
Christina
(nee
Meschishnick) Plemel.
After completing high
school at St. Ursula’s
Academy in Bruno, she
trained as an RN at St.
Elizabeth Hospital in
Humboldt. She worked in
Rosthern, Macklin and
Broadview where she met
her husband Harry Cook.
They were married in
1941, and had four sons.
They lived in Brandon for
a short time and then
moved to Broadview
where she remained until
1999. She was an active
member of St Mary’s RC
Parish and served as
treasurer of the Altar Society. She was also the
treasurer of the New
Horizons Club. After her
sons were born she
worked very little as a
nurse, spending her time
raising her children.
She enjoyed travelling,
once to Europe, also to
Alaska and many other locations including many
trips to Las Vegas with
her sister Dorothy and
bother-in-law Ray. She
had a large garden full of
vegetables, fruit trees and
especially flowers. Fortunately, she had four sons
to do all the weeding.
In 1999, she moved to
St. Volodymyr's Villa in
Saskatoon where she
made many new friends.
She lived there for 13
years. Her final year-and a-half was spent at St.
Paul Lutheran Home in
Melville.
She was predeceased by
her
husband
Harry
(1982); parents Martin
and Christina Plemel; two
sisters: Sr. Veronica and
Rose; six brothers: Alois,
Conrad, Andrew, John,
Leo and Carl; daughterin-law Janice and one
grandchild, Lucas, at
birth.
Cecilia is survived by
her children: Charles, Tom
(Margaret), John (Sylvia)
and Cliff; nine grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren; her siblings:
Agnes, Dorothy, Martin
(Marie).
Peace be with you on
your journey home.
A Funeral Mass was
celebrated on Feb. 8, 2014,
at St. Henry’s Roman
Catholic
Church
in
Melville with Rev. Father
Antoni Degutis as the Celebrant.
Arrangements were by
Bailey’s Funeral Home,
Melville.
Louis Stanley
Vizner
Milfred moved into Esterhazy in 1996, and later
sold the farm. Louis lived
in his house on Mill Street
up until his passing.
Louis had a passion for
auction sales and he was
a familiar face at the
many auctions he attended over the years. He
also enjoyed walking
downtown everyday to
have coffee with his family and friends and did so
until his health no longer
permitted him to.
He was a kind and gentle man who will be sadly
missed by his family and
friends.
He is predeceased by
his father, John; mother,
Edith; sister, Mildred
Muzylouski;
brothers:
Carl Vizner and Milfred
Vizner.
He is survived by his
two sisters: Anne Dorey
and Agnes Berg and numerous nephews, nieces
and cousins.
Funeral Mass was held
at Our Lady of Victories
Roman Catholic Church,
Esterhazy, on Feb.15,
2014, with Father Rene
Mangahas as Celebrant.
Pallbearers were: David
Knezacek, Greg Berg,
Mark Berg, Ron Dorey,
Ray Berg, Ted Muzylouski
and Lloyd Muzylouski.

were entrusted to Peter
Carscadden Funeral Service Ltd.
July 13, 1928 February 11, 2014
Louis was born in the
Hazelcliffe district on July
13, 1928, to John and
Edith (Styrvoky) Vizner.
Louis was the fourth eldest in the family of six. He
had two brothers and
three sisters.
Louis farmed most of
his life with his brother,
Milfred, in the Hazelcliffe
District on the Vizner
family farm. Louis and
Daisy Hill/Sumner Place News
Both locations are coping well despite the Arctic chills. We are
fortunate to still be able
to exercise and enjoy sociability indoors and
enjoy Carol’s activities.
Most of all enjoy the
good meals delivered by
Bowlarena, Mei’s, and
Meals on Wheels, but
feeling compassion for
those who must travel
regardless of the ice and
cold.
Both places were overjoyed with our Christmas entertainment and
decorating our premises.
Spy Hill United Church
Choir, The Mennonite
Choir,
St. Andrews
United Pastoral Care
Christmas Party, The
Boy Scouts and Knights
of Columbus came a-caroling.
Our Christmas dinners were the highlights
of December. Daisy Hill’s
dinner was catered by
Huber’s Catering and
they were entertained by
Herb and Linda Myers.
Sumner Place’s meal
was catered by Majestic
Catering and we were
entertained by “Strictly
Olde Tyme” with Reg
Knezacek. How we all
enjoyed hearing The Gift
by Daniel O’Donnel.
Happy Birthday was
sung to December residents Edna Hendrick,
Minnie
Fruin
and
Clarence Vanderhaeghe.
Special birthday parties were held for Edna
Hendrick, hosted by children Leslie Hendrick
and Elinor Hendrick.
Clarence Vanderhaeghe
celebrated his 91st birthday in style to which we
were all again treated to
cake and ice cream. Special guests were his son
Guy Vanderhaeghe and
Sylvia
Legris
from
Saskatoon, niece Jackie
Allan, nephew Gary Vanderhaeghe,
Debbie
Lemieux, and Helen
Solmes.
Carol Hojzan held a
Monday, February 17, 2014
great Christmas party at
Daisy Hill and Sumner
Place with contests and
games, plus showing the
past year’s activities she
had captured on film. A
dainty lunch was served
with refreshments following the program.
Get well cards were
signed at Sumner Place
for Elsie Clark, Shirley
Scheirer, Florence Yecny,
Dan and Clarence Vanderhaeghe.
We hope everyone had
an enjoyable New Years
with family and friends.
Both places undecorated
Christmas from the
lounge and hallways.
How sad to see our
Christmas trees taken
down and there were
ample volunteers to
help.
SALS (Saskatchewan
Assisted Living Services)
with Carol at the helm
served tasty pancakes
and sausage at noon.
Pastor Robert Moss
and wife Karen visited
leading us with a comforting, and meaningful
worship. Lily Bergstrom
was pianist for the service, and a lunch social
concluded the afternoon.
Maintenance manager
Garth Profit was given a
farewell party after serving faithfully at both locations
for
18
and-a-half-years. Garth
graciously chose to show
his appreciation by individually talking to everyone. Pam Knourek was
present. Our best to you
Garth and God Bless.
Due to circumstances
beyond my control, I’ve
misplaced some of my
notes but there were
January whist birthday
parties held, sorry folks!
Newest residents at
Daisy Hill are Josephine
Fruin, Ken Chapman,
and Marie Benna and at
Sumner Place newest
resident is Irene Thompson.
