More than 300 ATVs and riders gathered for the Esterhazy Super Sledders annual derby on April 26. Some participants like to play in the water and mud along the trail, as shown above. Former Esterhazy residents start farm animal rescue Submitted by Paulette Gilchuk There is a new haven for farm animals in need of rescue in Saskatchewan as of March, 2009 – The Chodove Animal Rescue and Maintenance (CHARM) Farm. Former Esterhazy residents Paulette Gilchuk, and her husband Greg Mikolas and three children run the farm. It is located in the Last Mountain Valley west of Strasbourg, Sask., CHARM takes in horses, cattle, sheep, goats, hogs and other domestic farm animals from bad situations or from people who no longer have a purpose or desire for their livestock and provides a nurturing environment for these animals to live a healthy life or get nursed to health as the case may be. The CHARM Farm will open its gates to the general public some time in May for viewing and petting. “A large part of what we are doing includes education of the public about what purpose Farm Animals serve, as well as the proper way to look after them. The kids will really benefit from finding out where all the good food they find at the grocery store comes from as well as some hands on experience collecting eggs, or milking a cow or a goat.” Originally planned to start accepting livestock in June of this year, one question on a bulletin board online opened the doors for people to request The CHARM Farm’s services. “It was really unbelievable”, Gilchuk says, “I asked if there would be a need for what we were planning and next thing you know there were horses in the barn”. There are present- ly seven horses calling the farm home, including three light horses, three draft horses and a two week old foal. The draft horses will be put to work giving wagon and sleigh rides, as well as doing horse drawn farming demonstrations and winter chores like cleaning barns and hauling bales. “Perhaps the biggest challenge has been our most recent rescue. 'Doma' came to us at two days old after her mother rejected her. Twelve feedings a day were hard on the family, but everyone chipped in and that little filly is doing just fine.” And the biggest surprise? “Definitely the Belgian mares. Their shear size is intimidating, but they are truly gentle giants and really crave attention.” The CHARM Farm operates solely on public support and donations for things like feed, veterinary supplies, building supplies for the barns and pens, fencing equipment and supplies – all the things necessary to provide proper care for Animals in need, some of which are quite distressed before being rescued. “One group started up a collection of tack supplies for us and a lady from Qu'Appelle has offered us some greatly needed storage barrels and other equipment so some of that stuff is well stocked”, said Gilchuk, “but now that spring has sprung the fences take precedence over everything. We’ve had to turn away a couple requests until we have more room, and for that we need to get fence up.” The CHARM Farm has a website available at http://charm.insask.net/ . Viewers can expect to see pictures of the rescued animals and logs of progress made at the Monday, May 4, 2009 farm. Information can also be found regarding adoption of some of the animals and the many different ways the general public can help support the farm and ensure that there will be a good home for mistreated farm animals in Saskatchewan for a long time.
