Goodbye to Larsen Jewellery

After a little more than 11 years of owning
and operating a jewellery business in Esterhazy, Mark Larsen and wife Jackie of Larsen
Jewellery are in the process of closing the
doors on their jewellery business forever.
“The responsibilities have just become too
demanding,” Larsen said. “It is time for something different. We are ready for more leisure
time together; we are ready to take a step
back and slow life down a bit. We want to be
able to visit our children and grandchild. We
want to enjoy our family.”
The Larsens have three daughters who all
live in Winnipeg. The oldest is employed by
the Canadian Curling Association and does a
lot of travelling; their second child is a nurse
at the Health Science Centre, is married, and
has a one-year-old child; and their youngest
works at a shelter called Siloam Mission in
Winnipeg, and is getting married soon.
The first part of closing down and retiring
is to sell everything in the store, according to
Larsen.
“We are selling right to the walls,” Larsen
said, “everything including equipment, pictures, all stock, shelving units. We also have
the trophy and engraving business that we
would like to sell as a package, hopefully
keeping the business available in this area.
This includes all accessories. We are continuing to take passport photos as long as time
and staffing permit, but eventually the business of taking passport I.D. photos will have

to be sold as a package as well.”
The second part of retirement for the
Larsen duo is to sell the store, and that has
already happened. Keith and Rhonda Sapara
have bought the building that is adjacent to
Sapara’s Drug Mart, which they already own.
What the Sapara’s plan to do with the property is so far undecided, according to Sapara.
Prior to owning Larsen Jewellery in Esterhazy, the Larsens owned and operated a jewellery store in Leaf Rapids. They opened that
store in 1985, and remained there until the
move to Esterhazy in 2002. Larsen has been
employed by The Mosaic Company for nine
years, and is currently working full-time at
K1 as a product/dispatch supervisor.
Holiday train coming to Bredenbury

Although it was announced recently that
Bredenbury will not be hosting their annual
Christmas Light Up, the Canadian Pacific’s
annual Holiday Train will be stopping in Bredenbury once again this year as part of its
15th annual cross Canada journey.
The 2013 CP Holiday Train is scheduled to
be in Bredenbury on Wednesday, Dec. 4 at
12:45 p.m.
Canadian Pacific’s annual Holiday Train
program is considered to be the longest running fundraising program in North America.
The Holiday Train program travels across
Canada and the United States raising money,
food, and awareness for food banks and
hunger issues. The Holiday Train reaches
more than 150 communities each year for a
combined distance of 10,000 kilometres.
The Holiday Train program launches on
Nov. 25 in Kahnawake, Que., formally kicking
off the three-week journey of two brightly decorated trains across Canada and the United
States.
The Canadian train will wrap up its journey Dec. 16 in Port Coquitlam, B.C., while the
U.S. train will journey across the U.S. Northeast and Midwest before its final show Dec.
19 in Weyburn, Sask.
Since the Holiday Train program first
launched in 1999, it has raised $7.4 million
and 3 million pounds of food for local communities. Everything raised in each community
stays in that community, and CP additionally
makes donations at each stop.
Musicians traveling aboard the trains will
play more than 150 free concerts from their
boxcar stage.
CP asks that attendees bring a non-perishable food or cash donation, and all donations
stay with the food shelf in the community
where they’re donated. Items like infant for-
mula, canned meats, and spaghetti sauce are
in particular demand for the millions of North
American’s who turn to food banks each
month.
Each Holiday Train consists of 14 brightly
decorated railcars, including a modified boxcar that has been turned into a traveling
stage for performers. For the fifteenth year,
CP’s elves have updated the thousands of
LED lights that adorn the sides of both trains
with new holiday designs.
A typical Holiday Train event goes something like this: The train arrives and pulls to
a safe stop in front of the crowd. The stage
door lowers and the band opens with its first
song. After that, a brief ceremony takes place
which involves local food bank officials and
other dignitaries. Once complete, the band resumes its show. After about a half hour that
usually includes a mix of traditional and modern holiday-themed songs, the band plays its
farewell show, the boxcar door closes, and the
train slips off into the night on its way to the
next stop.
For 2013, Holiday Train supporters will
enjoy the music of Jim Cuddy, Matt Dusk, Doc
Walker, Melanie Doane, Tracey Brown, Willy
Porter, The Claytones and other musical

to Potash Exhibit in Ottawa

A couple of years ago
the Canadian Science and
Technology Museum in
Ottawa contacted council
and asked for our plans
for the Saskatchewan
Potash Interpretive Center (SPIC) as they wanted
to do an exhibit on Potash
in their museum in Ottawa. After consultation
with them and Mosaic it
was decided to sell them
some of our plans so we
could share some of our
history and valuable
ideas.
The exhibit has been
open since June, but the
Museum committee flew,
myself, Brenda Redman,
Richard Zurburg and
John Nightingale to its
grand opening on Oct. 29,
as a way of thanking us
and to reinforce that they
used our plans in a professional manner.
I was awestruck with
the use of Mosaic logos
and the fact that Esterhazy, Sask. specifically is
named on the walls of the
exhibit, as the first sustainable potash mine in
Canada. Although they
used some of Esterhazy’s
plans, specifically the face,
showing the cutting head
as we do in the Interpretive Center, they also used
a few smaller details and
created a very good interactive and educational
display that will teach the
country the importance of
Potash in feeding the
world.
I was honored to be able
to attend this event and
was very excited that having the only Mining Interpretive Center in Canada
put us on Ottawa’s radar
and we are now a household name in their museum. A big thank you to
the committee who had
the vision to push forward
with SPIC, those volunteers and staff, that
toured over 3,000 people
from all over the world
through our facility this
past summer alone and
those who continue to
work with this facility.

More local donations
Twin Valley Veterinarian Health Services (TVVS) ran a promotion
during the month of July. The promotion was 15 percent of all spays and
neuters invoiced for the month of July were to be donated to St. Anthony’s Hospital Building Fund. During the month there were seven
neuters and four spays. The total donation was $400. TVVS will match
that for a total donation of $800. The Mosaic match will bring the total
to $1,600. Pictured above is Justin Noble, owner of TVVS and Don Hood,
representing the St. Anthony’s Hospital Building Fund.
Don Halyk, representing the Esterhazy Flyers, presents a cheque for
$370 to Jerry Halyk of the Esterhazy & District Charity Golf. The $370
was proceeds from the 50/50 drawn at the first Flyers hockey game. The
Mosaic match brings the total to $740.

Another busy month
has past and another begins. I attended a Regional
SUMA
(Saskatchewan
Urban
Municipalities Association) meeting at the beginning of October; I
hosted my first Mayor’s
Meet and Greet. I also attended the sod turning
event for our new Group
Home. I was honoured to
attend an event in Ottawa
on behalf of the Town for a
new Potash display that
opened in the Canada Science and Technology Museum in Ottawa which
used ideas from our Interpretive Center. We were
graciously thanked for our
input in their exhibit and
for the work our Town and
Mosaic did to contribute
to the feeding of the
world. If you haven’t been
in the Interpretive Center
yet, I invite you to make
an appointment and go
see it. Esterhazy is home
to the only one of its kind
and having it has placed
us on Ottawa’s radar. It is
an impressive display and
well worth the visit.
An entire year has already passed since becoming Mayor and I have
barely scratched the surface of what I wish to accomplish. We made steps
towards resolution with
the SK. Highway Department; we have cleared the
books of a few unresolved
issues, updated some outdated bylaws, and are in
the process of making
changes to some departments in an effort to make
the Town more efficient.
As always, I am available by appointment most
mornings if you have anything that you need to discuss. I am also looking for
some old pictures of Esterhazy in the early years.

Senate fiasco betrays
Harper’s roots
Given the current feuding between Prime Minister Stephen Harper and
the media, this might not
be the thing one would expect to hear from someone
in the media business.
But it’s hard not to feel
bad for the Conservatives’
grassroots base in the
wake of this Senate mess.
Admittedly, the contempt with which Harper
views the media is hard to
stomach. Harper thrives
on an us-against-them
mentality. In fact, it’s become a very effective way
to avoid taking responsibility for the fact that he
appointed Mike Duffy,
Pamela
Wallin
and
Patrick Brazeau – all of
whom were removed from
the Senate last week for
their questionable expense claims.
Harper’s narrative has
become all about the biased media and opposition
pursing
the
Conservatives because it
was the Conservatives
who did their job by kicking these Senators out.
And many Conservative
party members have eagerly taken their cue from
Harper.
But when such conflicts
occur in politics, it’s helpful to have a long-term
perspective.
The first long-term perspective is that every governing party makes the
media its scapegoat. To
the delight of the party
faithful, former NDP premier Roy Romanow went
to great lengths to trash
the media at annual
Saskatchewan NDP conventions.
It’s also helpful to remember that people get
involved in politics because they have a commitment
and
passion
accompanying their be-
liefs. Of course, they will
never be totally objective
or even rational about
perceived criticism from
the media and others. Of
course, they will often feel
under siege.
But it’s helpful to understand what the Conservative party base –
many of whom were old
Reformers – were once so
passionate about. It’s here
where one feels a bit sorry
for them during this Senate mess.
A quarter century ago,
Reformers like Preston
Manning, Deborah Gray
and Elwin Hermanson
were talking to everyone
who would listen about
how the West wanted in.
And the key to getting in
was an equal, effected and
elected Senate.
This was the passion of
Reformers. It was not necessarily an easy sell, because it flew in the face of
Brian Mulroney’s mainstream Progressive Conservatives who were
rather content with the
status quo. This was also,
supposedly, the passion of
a young political advisor
to Manning by the name
of Stephen Harper.
Their opportunity came
with the demise of the
Mulroney’s Progressive
Conservatives.
From
places
like
rural
Saskatchewan, the Reform rose to Official Opposition . . . albeit with little
hope that this regional
party could ever form a
federal government on its
own.
But new hope for their
ideals did come a decade
ago with the merger or
Reformers and old Progressive Conservatives
into the new Conservative
party that contained the
values of both.
The new Conservatives
gained power and dismantled the hated long-gun
registry and the Canadian Wheat Board. However, when it came to
Senate reform, Harper
seemed to abandon his old
values.
Harper did not support
provincial Senate elections, even though governments like Premier Brad
Wall’s
Saskatchewan
Party passed legislation to
do so. Instead, Harper appointed more Senators
than any other previous
Canadian prime minister
– including Wallin, Duffy
and Brazeau whose appointments seemed to
have more to do with their
ability to fundraise than
anything else. This wasn’t
exactly the “values” of either the old Reformers or
Progressive
Conservatives.
That Harper’s own
handpicked chief-of-staff
Nigel Wright was forced
to resign after covering
the expenses of Duffy says
much about both the
abandonment of those values and how close this
Senate mess is Harper,
himself.
So here we are today,
with Wall and others moving legislation last week
to support abolishing the
Senate rather than attempting to reform it. The
dreams of old Reformers
of a better confederation
through an equal, effective and elected Senate
now seem to be in tatters.
Notwithstanding the
misplaced anger at the
media that old Reformersturned-Conservatives
have, it’s hard not to feel
sorry for them.

Invest in yourself
I recently spent seven
days in St. Anthony’s Hospital, and before I say anything else on this topic, I
have to say that rather
than a huge and scary incident in my life, this
turned out to be more like
a wonderful, surprising,
rejuvenating spa-like getaway. I was treated very
well; almost spoiled, in
fact.
So everything I have to
say about my stay is
meant to be helpful; just
some personal observations that have re-awakened my desire to motivate
people to support the St.
Anthony’s Hospital Building Fund. It is a good
cause, for EVERYONE in
Esterhazy and area.
When I fell ill, not only
did it affect me directly, it
also affected a number of
other people. My mom and
dad in Regina were worried about me, and my two
brothers and their families
in Regina were all worried
as well. Both have wives
and two sons, one of which
is married and has a son of
his own. My brother, his
wife, and their two sons
who all live in Edmonton
were also worried. That is
16 people right there.
Then, locally, my husband acquired a number of
new grey hairs; his mom
was very concerned; five
brothers-in-law, four sisters-in-law, and a variety
of nieces, nephews, and
great nieces and greatnephews that total 20, but
vary in age from babies to
in their 30’s, all worried to
the extent that their age
allowed as well. That is another 30 that were affected
by my illness and stay in
St. Anthony’s.
From here we move on
to my work, and my husband’s work. My husband
missed a number of days
at work, which he spent
visiting me, looking after
me, hovering over me in
concern, and asking me
every four minutes, “Are
you OK?” That left his
crew short-handed, which
was a concern for us even
though his employer was
extremely compassionate.
My place of employment
was just as compassionate,
and my employers had
been dealing with the
onset of my illness for
months
already.
My
coworkers had done more
than their fair share of the
work many times; whether
I was present but slow, or
absent and quite ill. They
just wanted me to feel better as well.
If we expand this growing list to include friends,
it becomes too difficult to
keep track of. Needless to
say, we have acquired
many good friends at our
age, and they were just as
concerned and worried as
any family member or coworker.
So right here, already,
we have one person, one
illness, one stay in the hospital, and it affects more
people than we can accurately count. Important
building, staffed with important people, filled with
important machinery and
gadgets, all geared to making us feel better. It is
worth supporting the new
facility already, isn’t it?
Next, we just have to
note the undisputable fact
that the current St. Anthony’s Hospital was built
in the 1960s. For its time,
it was a modern, state-ofthe-art hospital. But there
is no denying that it is now
out-of-date, and the only
thing to blame for that is
time. It has reached a
point where to update the
current building to current
standards would cost more
than a new building, and
renovating would not last
as long as a new building.
This was proven thanks to
a cost estimate that the
government requires before approving the plans.
New is cheaper than fixing, and will last a good
time longer. The government has agreed with this
choice, and will be providing 80 percent of the cost
of the new building.
I am not, by any means,
educated or trained in the
building industry. But I
can understand that the
current heating system
that was originally installed, including vents to
the various areas, has
been replaced and repaired more than once, to
the best of technology that
was available at the time.
Just as it becomes more
and more difficult to find
parts for old cars, old
washing machines, and old
stereo systems, it also becomes harder and harder
to continually repair a
heating system. It also becomes harder to repair a
plumbing system, or an
electrical system. All of
these require accessing the
guts of the building, and
almost
starting
from
scratch.
Then we consider the
size of the rooms, the bathrooms, the doors, and the
entrances and exits from
the building itself. While
considered large and luxurious in the sixties, they
are too small for today’s
technology. Some of the
newer lifts that provide
safety for both patient and
healthcare worker when
transferring the injured or
ill from bed to bath or from
bed to wheelchair, or even
from bed to ambulance,
are too large to maneuver
in St. Anthony’s rooms,
hallways and doorways.
The beds, the heart monitoring equipment, IV lines
and their poles, and numerous other medical
equipment that the staff of
St. Anthony’s uses to assess their patients, this all
adds to the crowding of an
otherwise deceptively-spacious hospital room. We
are fortunate that our staff
remains so upbeat and
cheerful, but it would be
mutually beneficial to both
those being admitted for
care and for those caring
for them if the facility provided enough room for
today’s care-giving technology.
As I have said, I am by
no means educated or
trained in the building industry, so there is quite
likely much more that I
am unaware of, and that is
okay. I know that my family appreciates the care
that we have received in
this community, and we
want to give back what we
can. Not only will my family and friends benefit, the
rest of the community will
as well.
So whether you are the
patient, or the family of a
patient; or whether you
are a health-care provider,
or the family of a healthcare provider, the wellbeing of those that enter
the hospital premises will
be much improved, for
many years, when the
“new” St. Anthony’s comes
to be.
Your continued support
is necessary, for you, your
loved ones, your friends,
and your co-workers, and
for any in your immediate
circle that may come to be
in the next 50-60 years.

Big Papi, Little Koji bring title to Boston
Boston Red Sox World Series triumph
was all about Big Papi and Little Koji.
Six-foot-4, 250-pound David Ortiz, who
goes by Big Papi, showed off an incredible display of clutch hitting and Koji Uehara, the 195-pound Sox reliever, capped
an unbelievably stingy 2013 season by
perfecting the art of closing a game. If
the Red Sox were up in the ninth inning,
a victory was almost guaranteed once
the 38-year-old Japanese hurler was
handed the ball.
In the end, the Red Sox rebounded
from a last-place division finish in 2012
to win the tough A.L. East and then ride
the Ortiz-Uehara tandem, with occasional brilliance from Shane Victorino
and the reliable Dustin Pedroia, to dump
St. Louis four games to two and win their
third World Series title in the last 10
years. When they won the title Oct. 30 at
Fenway Park, it was the first home-field
Series triumph for the Red Sox since
1918.
While the veteran Ortiz, who has been
linked to past steroid use, batted .688 in
the World Series and .385 overall in the
post season, it was Uehara who put up
the most amazing stats. Signed as a free
agent to a one-year contract, Uehara became the Red Sox closer in June and befuddled opposing hitters with pinpoint
control and a darting sinker. How pinpoint? He didn’t walk a single batter in
the post-season (13 2/3 innings), but
that’s nothing special. He walked only
one batter since the all-star break, back
on Aug. 3. For the season, Uehara walked
only nine and struck out 101 in 74 innings. Opposing batters hit .130 against
him. It was without a doubt one of the
greatest pitching seasons by a reliever in
MLB history.
Uehara won’t win the Cy Young Award
as the best pitcher in the A.L. (likely winner Max Scherzer of Detroit was 21-3)
but it’s a safe bet Red Sox management
will be talking to Uehara’s agent on the
first day of free agency, waving a lucrative contract.

Chronicle: “Penn State will pay $59.7
million to victims of Jerry Sandusky.
That’s on top of the $50 million in other
costs related to the scandal. At least the
school is saving money by not having to
polish the Joe Paterno statue.”
• Ostler again: “Here’s the best way to
explain the 49ers-Jaguars mismatch to
the British: The Jaguars are this year’s
NFL version of Eddie the Eagle.”
• Blogger Torben Rolfsen, on Boston

found in his carry-on bag: “I guess that
finally settles the debate over whether

bad idea for Jacksonville where they

BAND HISTORY
The members of Stuck
On Red grew up together
in small town Churchbridge, Sask. and went
their separate ways for
secondary
education.
Eventually, they moved
back and started “piecing
it together” and began
playing gigs. Their first
performance together as a
band was at the golf
course in Churchbridge,
where the name was officially chosen for the fresh,
new, nameless group. A
connection in the band
formed from “the three
brothers in the band,” and
all of the members have
always “dabbled in the
music scene” and played
off and on. They all agreed
one day that they enjoyed
playing together and decided to “put something
together and make something out of it,” Prince
said.
BEHIND THE NAME
“We didn’t have a name
yet,” stated Bjarnason.
The group was out at the
golf course in Churchbridge sitting at the picnic
tables and the rockers
couldn’t decide on a name.
“We weren’t sure what we
were going to call ourselves and [then] it came
out of nowhere,” said
Prince, “it was from a random discussion, we had
this light, and it all tied
together.” The members
decided to name their
band after the “rigged,
junky” streetlight that
was stuck on red. They
ended up “dragging it
around for the longest
time, and would have it
dangling, stuck on red,”
Prince laughed. The band
has now upgraded to
some “better” lights for
their stage performances
and recently “retired” the
streetlight.
OUTSTANDING
PERFORMANCES
The band has enjoyed
many rowdy crows late at
night,
especially
in
Stoughton,
Sask.
“Stoughton is a little bit
wild,” Prince jokes. The
band loves the “entertaining” nights and is sure to
get the crowd moving
when they play their
hard-rocking tunes. The
rowdy crowds “are our
favourite,” said Prince.
MUSICAL
INSPIRATIONS
“Any kind of rock and
roll is what we enjoy play-
ing,” said Prince. Some of
her personal inspirations
are Joan Jett and Sheryl
Crow, and the other members are Metallica fans.
Prince said that band
“likes to keep it upbeat
and have a good time.”

and they look amazing! It
looks like a brand new
rink out on the ice surface.
The Town of Esterhazy

We have 24 games
scheduled at the arena for

Word has been received
in the community this
week that Margaret Ruth
Kendrick passed away
peacefully at home in Calgary at the age of 98 on
Oct. 22, 2013. She was
born at Broadview, Sask.
on Feb. 21, 1915. She married Art Kendrick in 1937,
and they took up farming
in the Qu’Appelle Valley
in the Cotham District
South of Dubuc. The
Kendricks
moved
to
Melville in 1962, then retired to Victoria, returning west to Calgary in
2001 to be nearer to their
family.
Margaret was predeceased by her husband of
70 years, Arthur; her son
Edward, who was a twin

residents. The contest will
start in December and
they will be looking for
submissions of “Winter”.
The town newsletter
stated that “We experience four beautiful Seasons and we want you to

news this week. Irene
Briggs has passed away
after a battle with cancer.
She was born Dec 9, 1948,
and died Oct 29, five
weeks short of her 65th
birthday. Funeral services
were held on Monday in
Calgary. Irene was an active member of our community in the 1970’s
when her hubby, Dennis
Briggs, was our Wheat
Pool elevator agent.
She will be missed by
her husband Dennis; her
children: Darcy (Janice),
Deanne (Doug), and Dallis
(Jadine); and her grandchildren: Austin and
Adrian.
Condolences

Dubuc go out to all her
immediate family and the
extended Briggs and Zazalack families.
